Love 'em or despise 'em, you've got to give Korn props for kick-starting a new metal movement that blends aggressive hip-hop rhythms with roaring hate-metal riffs. In the wake of the band's 1994 debut, many like-minded groups cropped up, including Deftones, Snot, and Limp Bizkit. But with the release of Korn's disappointing 1996 sophomore effort, Life Is Peachy, the imitators seemed likely to usurp the innovators. Maybe that's why Follow the Leader is so crafty and inspired. Instead of continuing on cruise control, Korn have diversified their formula, experimenting with mood and dynamics while intensifying their melody and noise thresholds. "Got the Life" blends a seductive disco beat and vocals reminiscent of "Epic"-era Faith No More with oppressive guitar chimes and squawks. "Children of the Korn" features a propulsive rap beat, throbbing bass lines, and angry guest vocals by Ice Cube. But just when Korn's groovin' psychedelic fury starts to make listeners see red, the band lashes out with "All in the Family," a hilarious rap-metal diss-fest duet with Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, that proves Korn are much more than the sum of their rage. --Jon Wiederhorn

I've had this album for years now and I still love it. I recommend it to any rock fan out there.

5 out of 5 stars Korn's masterpiece, and most successful album........2007-05-15

Back in the mid-to-late 90s, Korn was the coolest heavy band around. They have lost plenty of that popularity lately, as many think of them as sell-outs, or other kids are just trying to be cool, saying they only like death metal and everything else sucks.
Korn has gotten more experimental lately, with Issues, Untouchables, and See You On The Other Side being less heavy and trying new things. Fans have been lost, but I see Korn as one of the most important heavy bands in the history of music. They opened a lot of doors and helped to make metal popular again. And, despite what many may think, I appreciate their music in all stages of their career. It shows growth and keeps things fresh and interesting. Some albums have been better than others, sure, but none have been bad. Follow the Leader is a defining moment in their careers and features many of their best songs. It is loud, angry, catchy, and fun.

It's funny, KoRn's best album is dissed a lot. I got this and I can't stand Ice Box's (or whatever the hell his name is) little rap song. I wonder if Fred Durst knows that it should be illegal for him to "rap". So now that is out of my system, this album is pretty damn good. I really don't like Nu-Metal (Thrash/Death Metal all the way) but KoRn put out a good Nu-Metal album. I don't know why they put 12 tracks of 5 seconds of silence though. I just deleted that of my iPod.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-03-19

I falled in love with Korn when i first listened to 'Freak On A Leash' song. But when i listened the whole album, i felt like this is it. This is what i'm looking for in music. Totally out of this world of music type. Full of energy and 'music'.

5 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump Here!.......2007-04-03

Simply one of the shining moments in the "Golden Age" of hip-hop, 1989's Follow The Leader is a phenomenal follow-up to Paid In Full. Words cannot express what a solid, inspired album this is. Where the ground-breaking classic Paid In Full had more simple and gritty beats, this album is much more complex in the area of beats. Its lyrical content is very similar to its predecessor in the constant description of Rakim's superior microphone skills. This, however, is remarkably fresh if you're tired of the predictable braggadaccio of bitches and ho's. Hip-hop rarely gets better than this. In fact, music rarely does.

5 out of 5 stars Follow the Leader.......2007-01-03

This is a pretty sweet album. The beats are awesome, but not as dense or elaborate as modern ears have come to expect, eighteen years after its original release. Rakim can ride a beat all day, though. Definitely a worthy purchase, especially for less than $10.

5 out of 5 stars a classic follow-up to a classic debut--.......2006-10-02

Rakim's status as a lyricist is unquestioned, and Eric B's beatmaking skills were at their peak here. From beginning to end, there's something to enjoy on this LP. Rakim's freestyles are great, and he would take time for progressive talk & social commentary, never succumbing to gangster-rap cliches.

For a group that never really had crossover success (unless you count the fact that the "Paid in Full" breakbeat showed up in any number of pop records), I'm glad that Universal/Chronicles is taking the time out to explore their hip-hop catalog and expose these pioneering releases to new audiences and old ones alike.

Newer listeners may be thrown off that there are INSTRUMENTALS on this LP, but for this era of rap, it was not unheard of for the DJ of the group (again, nowadays, kind of a rarity) to have a song that showcased their mixing & scratching skills.

I especially dig the fact that bonus cuts were included, like the "The R" extended mix, which opened the hip-hop radio mix show I listened to as a kid.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the Best Hip Hop CD ever made.......2006-06-10

This ain't old school this is true hip hop, like Public enemy and KRS1, these are masters of Hip Hop. Nothing else needs to be said.

5 out of 5 stars Follow the Leaders of Hip Hop.......2006-02-18

I know that PAID IN FULL is a hard cd to follow but FOLLOW THE LEADER comes pretty damn close. Let me put it this way, PAID IN FULL and FOLLOW THE LEADER are the best 1 to 2 cd combo in hip hop history period. Those cds are just as good today as they were back in the day, that's the definition of a CLASSIC.

The tracks that standout are:
1) Follow the Leader
2) Microphone Fiend - underrated hit
3) Lyrics of Fury
5) Just a Beat
6) Put your Hands Together
9) The R
10) Musical Massacre

Aight, I'm not gonna lie to you when I tell you that this CD ROCKS! The remixes are so good and even better, they are previously unreleased making it a rare compilation! 5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!! I LOVE KORN!!!!.......1999-10-01

I think that the whole CD is the BOMB! I love the way they talk about true life experiences and the way they dealt with them. I have never found anyone that I can relate to quite like I can with Korn. Their music has helped me in so many different situations. I feel that they are the best band out there and I know they will ALWAYS be the bomb!!! THANKS Korn!!!

ok, first, this is an AUSTRAILIAN IMPORT. of course it's not a real release, just like my re-mix vegetables cd of korn's. second, what makes you think amazon MADE it? if they made it, it wouldn't say AUSTRAILIAN IMPORT - SPECIAL BONUS DISC on the cover (which is written in the same font as when it says "children of the korn" so just don't go around talking about stuff u don't understand.

5 out of 5 stars A soon-to-be dance craze in the US!.......2001-07-15

We came across this song during our recent vacation in Cancun. This is a great and fun group dance song.

When "Follow The Leader" becomes the next big dance craze to sweep the US (a la the Macarena) remember where you heard it first! ;-)

I snatched this up immediately and know it will always bring back memories of our wonderful vacation in the beautiful Riviera Maya section of Cancun!

After getting paid in full on their near-perfect 1987 debut, success didn't spoil the legendary Eric B. and Rakim on their 1988 follow-up. A more complete "album" than their previous singles-dominated release, Follow the Leader still stands as one of the definitive documents of hip-hop's fabled golden age. Though Eric B contributes strong production and two early turntablist blueprints ("Eric B. Never Scared" and "Just a Beat"), this was clearly Rakim's time to shine. His smooth baritone flow never tires, even when the album's energy wanes in the second half. Rakim's verses on the album's first three tracks ("Follow the Leader," "Microphone Fiend," and "Lyrics of Fury") are the stuff of hip-hop legend, and the subject matter rarely strays from the swaggering, chest-thumping template of these three classics. On "Follow the Leader," he confidently boasts "I can take a phrase that's rarely heard / Flip it / Now it's a daily word." He ain't no joke. --Hua Hsu

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rakim stood alone in "88" as the premeire MC of rap music........2006-11-30

Follow The Leader by Eric B. and Rakim cemented Rakim's place in history as the greatest rapper that ever lived. Legendary classics such as Follow The Leader and Microphone Fiend set the bar for rhyming and writing classic joints. So while other hiphop greats have over 20 years in rap music, Classic debut albums, Most consistent catalog, influential careers and tragic deaths, one guy changed the game forever.

His name is Rakim.

5 out of 5 stars Eric B and Rakim's second rap classic - rap enthusiasts will love this!.......2006-01-12

Coming out two years after their debut "Paid In Full", "Follow The Leader" sounds less dated and more fun (and just as influential). Rakim still proves that he's an excellent MC with his revolutionary and influential delivery for the time-period. His lyrical content isn't great, but it's his flow that was so inspirational at the time. Eric B delivers great production which is less dated sounding than his "Paid In Full" work (see "Follow The Leader" for an example) - mainstream rap fans will have a better chance liking this one than their debut. Eric B essentially moves away from the minimalism that was evident on "Paid In Full". The lyrics are sometimes hard to hear, but they're all fun, catchy and always interesting to pay attention to (though not deep at all). If you call yourself a true rap fan then there's a high probability that you'll love this old school classic! Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

5 out of 5 stars Oh my GOD! Rakim...........2005-08-16

Like the name of rakim's unreleased c.d. OH MY GOD! Brothaz sistaz...Otherz, Ey'body! Listen. This man (rakim allah) Is the king of hip hop! Period. There is no one on this earth that can put words together like Rakim. "Paid in full was a beast". "Follow the leader was a monster". You feel me. A monster! I bought this album in 88'. Repurchased it in 93. And I just bought It once more in 2000. Im' what I like to call A "HUNTER" for real hip hop. If you will! Todays BLING SING AND RAP Is NOT TOUCHING ME IN THE RIGHT PLACES, LYRICLY. You have 50 cent stating that he's been shot a number of times... Then go platinum! Singing the chours most of the time. And then you have rakim. Without a record deal. If you are looking for AUTHENTIC hip hop. Look no further. It's all In this c.d. This man's lyric appeal has appeased politicans, police officers, Professors. When Ra. spit He's actually saying something worth Listening to. Unlike todays BAFOONERY! Every Bling Rapper today Is basically saying the same ol' same. And I can not take It! Get this. And Get now!

5 out of 5 stars THE MASTER!.......2005-08-04

Rakim is the greatest MC of all time!(my opinion of course) This is one of the dopest Eric B & him ever put together. Rakim's smooth and powerful raps go hand in hand to the insane tracks Eric B. lays down. Overall, its Nothing less than PERFECT!

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Paid In Full.......2005-06-11

Paid In Full Sounded a bit old fashion but this album seems more complete and better. Paid In Full Introduced us to a new type of rhyming skill but i think follow the leader is an improvement over it. paid in full is still a great album but i enjoyed this more. this isnt a sophomore slump

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing song.......2004-11-29

I heard it for the first time in Riviera Maya, Mexico at my hotel the Paradisus with my best friend at a mini disco for kids. It is such a happy, catchy song, I can't see how you wouldn't like it. It brings back such great memories - it's definitely up there as one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars So Much Fun.......2001-03-21

My best friend and I went to Cancun last year for a "girls" vacation. Everywhere we went, they played this song. It was kind-of like the YMCA here - everyone knows it and it is a great crowd pleaser/ice breaker song. It is a lot of fun. I am even playing it at my wedding reception!

4 out of 5 stars Great Dance Beat!!.......2000-10-06

I first heard this song during carnival on the carribean island of Aruba. The Soca Boys do a great version of it. It is upbeat and fast paced. The fun is contagious! It is like a carribean Hokey Pokey and my 2 year old neice loves to dance to it too! Great when cleaning the house to help pick up the pace. It definitely makes you move to the beat!!

        Album Description

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.
