Country music had no bigger story in 2004 than the rise of the Muzik Mafia, a renegade group of Music City misfits led by Big & Rich (Big Kenny Alphin and John Rich, the latter formerly of Lonestar) and Gretchen Wilson. Both acts shook up Nashville's lethargic, formulaic format--Wilson with her take-no-bull brand of redneck chic, and Big & Rich with their eclectic, wild-haired blend of honky-tonk, rock, rap, ballad, and western, the shoot-'em-up motif for their traveling circus, i.e., Wild West show. Their debut, Horse of a Different Color, which showcases the pair's unusual high-low vocal harmony, is both funny and irreverent ("Kick My Ass"), not to mention clever. (They sing "bad word" in place of a rhyming epithet.) Boasting "music without prejudice" in their self-mythologizing "Rollin' (The Ballad of Big & Rich)," they reference Charley Pride as "the man in black," and trot out country music's first African American rapper, Cowboy Troy. Yet race turns to "racy" in the duo's hit single "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)," the disc's least interesting cut. The easy laugh and rapped stanzas overshadow the smarter lyrics on the rest of the record, which concerns itself not only with frontier justice, but, surprisingly, with old-time religion (Jesus, tolerance, and in a song about sexual abuse, "Holy Water"). Like many professional funny men, Big & Rich--accomplished songwriters and (now) producers--are dead serious beneath it all. Even if this horse opera of a novelty act doesn't last, look for them to shape much of what gallops out of Nashville for a good, long run. --Alanna Nash

People hype this band saying how great they are "oh they are outlaws" nothing outlaw about them period. this is not what country music needs and whom ever decided to give these guys a contract should be fired. Now Both of them outside of this concoction they put together are talented songwriters John Rich formally of Lonestar writes for Gretchen Wilson and others. Don't know too much about Kenny. Now, if this is what YOU LIKE then Buy it !!! 1 star is too much

Big and Rich bring their premiere album to the world, and they bring it with gusto. It has been years since the world of country music has been rocked by anyone this good and willing to break the boundaries of the standards of country music.

From the opening lines of bringing you Country Music Without Prejudice until the final notes waft away, you will be enthralled with this album. This is one of the best albums in my music collection.

If you think the CD is fantastic...........2007-07-22

Then you need, NEED to see this man live!! He sings several songs from his A Thousand Different Ways CD and he sounds absolutely fabulous singing them live. As Sara Collins mentions below he breathes new life into these selection, but in person, on stage, he launches them into a different dimension entirely. I Want To Know What Love Is and Open Arms are just the tip of the iceberg of these covers sounding like you are hearing them for the first time. If you haven't seen Clay Aiken live and in person, I strongly encourage you to check if he's coming to your home town and buy a ticket fast!!!

Clay does Covers and is AWESOME again!.......2007-07-06

For whatever reason, there are those in the industry that think doing an album of mostly "covers" isn't legit or even cool, but Clay has proven all naysayers wrong. This album is very smooth, powerful in its delivery, and every cover is better than the original, in my humble opinion. And A Thousands Days is beautiful original piece. I didn't understand the way radio stations work so was very confused why none of these tunes were ever played on our local (Denver) radio station, especially on the station that plays all love songs late at night.... kinda sad in my opinion that songs aren't played on the radio like they did in the old days....by what the listeners want and request! Clay's CD deserved lots of air time but was ignored by those who dictate what we hear on the radio. Clay has a beautiful voice and a masterful delivery of his music and he will be around for a very long time. He's still my favorite American Idol contestant and I believe I speak for many folks! Buy this CD and you won't be disappointed!

I really enjoyed Clay's first album...every single song. This one is good, but I would have preferred more original songs instead of mostly retreads. I think a 2nd album for an artist should not be re-makes, so although I liked it, I was a bit disappointed.

Album Description

Featuring a futuristic cover predating David Bowie's science fiction funk, Betty Davis crafted an inspired second album, leading with "Shoo-B Doop and Cop Him" (later sampled by Ice Cube) and made up of classic cuts like "Don't Call Her No Tramp" and the mesmerizing punk soul of "He Was A Big Freak." This was the first album Betty produced entirely by herself and she really sharpened up her songs and performances for it.

This 1974 masterpiece will finally receive a long-overdue proper reissue with Part Two of Oliver Wang's liner notes and an endless array of photos and archival material, plus a number of previously unreleased bonus tracks.

For the first time, Betty's critically adored first two albums are being lovingly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Light In The Attic Records to sound as ferocious and revolutionary as they did when they first sprung on an unsuspecting world in the early `70s. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over the intensely strong but sensual funk of Betty Davis. One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of this R&B pioneer. Ms. Davis's unique story is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song 'Uptown' for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late `60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -- personally inspiring the classic jazz-rock fusion album Bitches Brew. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Her 1974 sophomore album They Say I'm Different features a worthy-of-framing futuristic cover challenging David Bowie's science fiction funk with real rocking soul-fire, kicked off with the savagely sexual 'Shoo-B-Doop and Cop Him' (later sampled by Ice Cube). In addition to the restoration of the incredible original cover art, the albums feature compelling and heartbreaking liner notes written by author and respected soul music scholar Oliver Wang (O-Dub/Soul Sides) and include her second interview in decades, making these essential reissues for any soul or funk-rock collection.

Betty Davis is an artist I've been hearing a lot of hype about for years.'They Say I'm Different' is an album I've been hearing about forever as well.I was almost entirely certain there was no way that this album could possibly live up to the hype.Well when Light In The Attic records decided to put this out on CD,.....well to put it mildly this MORE then lived up to it's longheld mystique and hype.The best way to describe this music is unhinged and unpolished funk.EVERY song on it fits that description.As for Betty Davis's singing,it lays somewhere between the the styles of Tina Turner,Sly Stone and Janis Joplin.All of the songs celebrate her liberated spirit but there's one that just blows you away in less then a second."He Was A Big Freak".......I don't know WHAT MAN she was referring to but she really paints herself as a wild,wild funky diva BIG TIME here;she wails out about her "man" who enjoys being tied up.The Ohio Players did a lot of S&M based album art at the this time but TALKING OPENLY ABOUT IT,A FEMALE FUNK SINGER?And it never seems like a gimmick either because you actually believe she lived a lot of the "wild style" she speaks about.And the grooves on that and every other song here are as raw a funk as you're probably ever going to hear.

Enjoyable Album, nice lyrics.......2007-07-15

A good album that I enjoyed, with great lyrics. The most memorable song on the album being "song in my head" Comparable to Relient K, but less variety. However, Sherwood has figured out their style, and they are good at it, which tends to make up for the repitition of sound in most of the tracks. Can drag in the middle a bit, but all in all a great album. If you have an appreciation for the thoughtful lyrics and well constructed musical style of Relient K and others, you will probably enjoy Sherwood.

Okay, so I've never tried crack, but I hear it's pretty addictive. As is this suberb CD by Sherwood. To anyone who has never heard them, take Relient K and Mae, mash them together, and you have Sherwoord. Of course, you could throw in some Hellogoodbye and Daphne Loves Derby for good measure, and that's good eatin'!
Alright, I guess it needs to be a bit less vague than that. You've got four guys playing guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. It's a set up we've seen before, but few pull it off as well as this band. The synth reminds me of a less mentally unsable Motion City Soundtrack. The lyrical content is your typical "Boy loves girl, girl does not recipricate." The amazing thing is that while they write lyrics that sound like an old Dashboard Confessional album, the delivery ends up being very much on the hopeful side.
For those who didn't download their Summer Ep for free back in June or May of last year, the only song that was not added to this album was "This Airplane is a Ribbon." That made me a bit sad because that is by far my favorite Sherwood song. "The Only Song" sounds the same to me. "Middle of the Night," "The Simple Life," and "I'm Asking Her to Stay" all sound a wee-bit different. Good different.
If I could pick out a list of stand out tracks I would. But they blend so easily that it's hard to say which ones are the best. I will say that my favorites are "Middle of the Night," "For the Longest Time," and "Alley Cat." The only song I dislike on this album is "The Best in Me," and dislike sounds like too strong of a word. There's nothing really wrong with it, but it irks me. I can't explain that. Anyway, I'd have to say that this album sound put Sherwood on the map. Is it their Everglow? Not quite. Maybe next record. But it's certainly one of my favorite of 2007.

Simply superb music.......2007-04-24

This album presents plenty of outstanding songs filled with a sense of Summer and an overall happy feeling. If you like Hellogoodbye, FM Static, Cartel, Plain White T's, well, you will love this band. They are a mix of all those bands, with their own style put in aswell. The lyrics are intricate and meaningful, the guitars are very upbeat and make it real easy to rock out to. These songs are great to dance to and make you want to get off your feet and start to dance and sing along. The combination of guitar, bass, and keyboard make a nice sound, unlike anything I have heard from a band before. Songs like "Song In My Head" and "Middle Of The Night" are sure to be on the top of your music chart. The band even throws in some remakes of a few older songs from preivous CDs which give you the sense of style from their older creations.

To put it simply, the music has a positive, upbeat sound and feel to it, unique and great to rock out to and sing along. It's the kind of music that you can feel in your body when you listen to it, giving you goosebumps it is so good. 5 out of 5. I'd give it a 6 if i could.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Beautiful Album that's a Pure Pleasure to Own........2007-05-21

I'm so happy, after all these years, to have finally broken down and bought Twin Sons of Different Mothers rather than debate it for 30 years. Liking all kinds of music, I have a special place in my heart for "muzak," particularly world and smooth jazz, so whoever has been giving all of the other reviewers here neggies for liking it, go ahead and get mine over with right now as well.

True, you hear several tracks from this wonderful collaberation in the halls of shopping centers and on very light stations, but I also find it easy to listen to in the car and quite romantic all at once. Weisberg's flute is a major attraction for yours truly, and Fogelberg's acoustic guitar playing compliment's his style perfectly. Best tracks are breezy "Lazy Susan," exotic Brazilian "Guitar Etude No.3," haunting "Paris Nocturne," a lovely remake of the old Judy Collins song, "Since You've Asked," and the powerful, wonderfully pretentious "Power of Gold."

If you like your music to be muzak from time to time, I definitely recommend this disc to take the edge off a lousy day or just because you're mellow. Good stuff from two talented musicians whose styles really aren't that far apart in the first place.

I purchased this CD way back when it first came out and over the years and several moves later it "disappeared". I'm glad I deceided to buy it again. This is great "drive music" from two like minded free-form artists. Upbeat and refreshing are the keywords here. I'm no music critic as you can tell, but I know what I like in music and this fits the bill.

For those of you who haven't noticed, this extraordinary album has finally been remastered (the sound is great!)and is now available as a Japanese import that comes housed in a beautiful, mini vinyl sleeve. I hope you true Dan Fogelberg fans out there will buy this, so that Sony Music (Japan) will continue to remaster Dan's backcatalogue. Can't wait to get my hands on the remastered versions of "Nether Lands" and "The Innocent Age".

I have'nt heard this music in decades. As soon as i started playing the CD, I was back in high school again with my high school sweetheart. Good music, good memories. A good buy at a good price.

I missed out on this years ago..........2007-04-20

Back in the mid 90's, I dismissed Pulp as just another BritPop band. Come to find out, I was wrong. A good friend gave this to me as a CD exchange and I have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed.

The standout tracks are clearly (IMO) "Mis-Shapes", "Common People" and "I Spy". The music is rather jangly and at times has a distinctly dance-able beat. What won me over though were the lyrics. Jarvis Cocker manages to create a fantastic mental image to go along with his lyrics, which are alternately humorous and serious, occassionally silly ("Sorted for E's and Wizz") and vaguely malevolent ("I Spy"). Cocker's delivery is very basic - he doesn't have a lot of range, but he makes good use of his voice and some of the spoken parts of the songs send chills up my spine.

All in all, this is a great album. I wish that I'd given it a chance back in 1995.

One of the best albums of all time.......2006-12-08

Ten years later, "Different Class" remains one of the best albums of all time. I have heard the songs hundreds of times and never get tired. There are six standout tracks: Common People, Disco 2000, Something Changed, Feeling Called Love, Underwear & Monday Morning.

I recently requested "Common People" at a club...and it remains an anthem of angst, brit pop, glam rock and a brillant screw-the-world perspective.

Alas, Pulp's follow-up albums were not able to come close to "Different Class". So disappointing. But it's not called a Magnum Opus for nothing. I hope frontman Jarvis Cocker's new solo album will provide some solace.

An essential recording........2006-10-24

Released 11 years ago, this was a hit in the UK. I didn't know that until last year.

I was looking for some music from the britpop era, (being a huge fan of Oasis, Blur, Coldplay, The Verve, etc) and a stumbled upon their greatest hits CD. I must say that the only track I really got into was "Disco 2000", the rest were OK, not great. Then, after a couple of spins of that CD (and listening to the lyrics) I started lo like them.

I got His N' Hers (I played it to death) and then this one... wow... I played three times in a row, it was an amazing experience. Jarvis Cocker knows how to create an atmosphere with each song.

Every song could have been a single, amazing lyrics (to me, this guy is one of the best lyricists in britain nowadays). The stories of typical day-life on working-class people from the UK is something that the casual listener can relate to.

I recommend this CD to everybody. It came out during the so-called britpop era (I love that genre, even though most of the bands are now defunct). I won't mention any particular track.

Get it right now, it's a piece of Britain's music history.

Considering most of the crap music that the 90's produced, this was a brilliant masterpiece. Not a bad song among the bunch, I can never get tired of listening to Common People and Something Changed.

It is almost impossible for any album on Amazon to receive nearly a hundred reviews and still get an overall 5 star rating, yet DIFFERENT CLASS has managed to do just that. Although Pulp has several really good albums, this is their best in my opinion. It isn't just that the songs are musically compelling; lyrically the songs are frequently and unexpectedly complex. When this album was first released in England it was one of the rare times when an album achieved simultaneously intense critical and popular acclamation. Critics declared it a masterpiece, and fans bought it in astonishing numbers. The album also is deceptively political, in that it features class difference in a large number of songs.

There are many musical highlights on the album, but what I find most remarkable is that there are several songs so good it makes the other songs seem bad in comparison, while one song in particular makes even the other great songs suffer in contrast. Fans will always differ on their favorites, but few will question that the album starts off strongly with "Mis-Shapes." "I Spy" is one of my favorites on the album along with "Disco 2000," which follows it. "Sorted for E's and Wizz" is another stunner. But seriously, all the songs on the disc are at least good, most are very good, and two or three are great. But the best of the bunch is unquestionably "Common People."

"Common People" is simply a great song on multiple levels. Musically it is incredibly compelling, one of those tunes that once you hear it you can't get it out of your head, with an upbeat tempo that makes you want to get up and dance around. But this would merely make it a good song; what makes it great is the story the song tells. An art school student is noticed by a fellow student, a rich girl from Greece, who declares to him that she wants to learn about what it is like to live as one of the common people. There is a definite sexual come on, as she says that she wants "to sleep with common people, like you." At this point you think you know where the song is going, to a nice if somewhat standard narrative of two people from different classes who have a romance despite it all. But the song instantly takes you in a different tangent. What follows is as extraordinary as it is unexpected. Our hero takes the girl to a supermarket and asks her to imagine being there with no money, a notion she laughs at. At this point the song turns very serious and dark, as he tears into her for her calloused desire to slum and make a game out of taking on a mode of life that is for others a fairly desperate affair. He tells her that if she is laying in a bed watching roaches on the wall she can just call her dad and her problems would be over, but to truly find out what it would be like to live like "common people" would mean learning what it means to have no choices, no outs, no control. He sings:

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control

So instead of the song of romance and love that we think we are getting at the beginning, we get an impassioned condemnation of anyone who would make light of the struggles of those who are less well off. I know of no other song like it. Pulp has done a number of really fine albums and a host of great songs, but this song has to go down as one of my all time favorites. It definitely goes onto my all time Top 40.

There are four Pulp albums that I think any serious music fan should own: HIS 'N' HERS, DIFFERENT CLASS, THIS IS HARDCORE, and WE LOVE LIFE. If one were bound and determined to own only one Pulp album, one might go with HITS, but this DIFFERENT CLASS is so good that I just can't imagine anyone not wanting this and others as well. Trust me: if you don't own this album you need to get it today. Your ears will thank you.

Different Trains (1988) will probably go down in history as Reich's masterpiece. And deservedly so. Reich's phase-shifting minimalism is made dazzlingly entertaining in Different Trains, which is scored for string quartet and digitally sampled voices that repeat bits of speech concerning trains and Reich's experience with them growing up. The sinister part here is than some trains carried Jews to death camps. That's here as well. The Kronos Quartet has also never sounded better. Electric Counterpoint (1987) has one guitar--Pat Metheny in this case-- playing to 10 pre-recorded motifs, also on guitar. You absolutely need this. --Paul Cook

Different trains a very powerful piece, full of irony and juxtopostion that are used to the greatest effect. Its one of Reich's best, but it's actually not very minimalist for him, which may be why I like it. Of course, Kronos does an excellent job. Electric Counterpoint is pleasant for about a movement or so, but in the end it comes across as thin and dull compared to Different Trains.

Excellent First Reich Disc.......2005-12-04

Both pieces on this disc are delightful and brilliant - very emotional and accessible I find. Neither has the vast (Well-tempered klavier of percussive phase-shifting!) scale of _18 Musicians_ or _Drumming_, but that's almost certainly an advantage for most people (and has been for me). Just two quick comments about the pieces:
1. Holocaust themes in art are often ponderous... "Different Trains" ingeniously avoids all sorts of traps of that sort by starting us off, as it were, in the New World with technology and optimism. The darkness enters later and is all the more powerful for it. Now I think about it, this piece makes the disc a great gift for a precocious kid... if they like Pink Floyd or other broadly conceptual rock stuff they'll dig this.
2. The second "slow" movement of "Electric Counterpoint" is flat out gorgeous.

Spectacular Aural Imagery!!.......2005-05-12

I was very fortunate to hear the Kronos Quartet perform this up in Orono, Maine (at the University of Maine) the year this CD was released. Not being familiar with either Reich, the piece, or the KQ at the time, I was completely blown out of the water by the uniqueness of the idea, the emotion of the narrative, and the jarring comparison between Reich's life and the lives of so many others. Several jazz perfomers have tried similar "voice-matching" techiniques--Victor Wooten and Jason Moran, most recently--but hearing a child's message on an answering machine replayed on the bass guitar does not match the emotional impact of the narrative Reich provides. It is such an abstract notion with such concrete results. Kronos is impeccable in their performance, as usual, and they provide the flair and brass needed to pull off such a feat. I played this CD (along with Gorecki's Symphony #3) every year in my Holocaust class for juniors and seniors in high school. They are as blown away by the whole concept as I originally was. It is a technically impressive and emotionally draining experience.

Electric Counterpoint is, quite sadly, the overlooked portion of this CD for me. I am a huge Pat Metheny fan, but I look to his other CDs for his best work. I know it is my loss. . . .

Bottom Line: Whether or not you like Steve Reich and/or the Kronos Quartet, you need to give this CD a listen--it is a challenge and a delight.

not his best but worth a listen.......2004-02-28

Steve Reich can be undigestable at times and not the easiest of composers to listen to, it's as if your listening to a record with the needle sticking to the groove with very little developement...so it's safe to say that you certainly have to be in a certain mood to appreciate this kind of music but it does have it's rewards. The c.d is divided up into two sections, "Different Trains" with the Kronos Quartet as good as usual. The momentum of the music depicts the progression of trains through out America and Europe and what they represent, human voices reciting historical dates.
The second work on the disc "Electric Counterpoint" almost seems as though it doesn't belong on the same disc but it's in my opinion the diamond in the rough. I have been a Pat Metheny fan long before Steve Reich and it's the main driving point in owning the disc, brilliant guitar playing.

The Fastest Train.......2004-02-18

This album is great, yep. It's neat. What are you expecting when you say things like, "for me this album just doesn't cut it." That says nothing about Reich's work. It only says that you could not connect with what he is doing. It's a shame too, because Reich does some very nice work on this album - The Fastest train, on the fastest train. It's so very entertaining - he does such a good job of putting all of that material together. Stow you tastes and opinions away then listen again - maybe you'll actually hear Steve Reich's music.

~ THE PRIMARY COLORS OF RUSH ~.......2007-01-31

You know it! Take it from this fan too, I saw them quite a few times back then and have heard every note on every release many times - THIS ROCKS! The version of each song is selected nicely and very strong, each disk is fantastic to me. None of the enthusiasm or talent is missing, you could even say they have just gotten better over the years. By the way, Alex Lifeson is one of the longest-standing and best arena-rock guitarists on the planet (have to leave room for other talented galactic string benders I may not be aware of). Neil & Geddy are still spoken of with that same regard as well. This bands impact is huge! Who said you slow down when you get older??? Just watch the Rush In Rio dvd if you need further proof ... the Vapor Trails material (the whole darned concert actually) on there shows a band just finding its higher self. They rocked Rio's world those two nights. The psychedelic connection has been strengthened lately too it appears, maybe a great new stage is about to present itself? One can hope. That Hammersmith disk from 78 is especially sweet, maybe my favorite single cd offered. I do have to say that this is a five-star release if there ever was one (in my opinion, I love it!). Enjoy on a BIG POWERFUL SYSTEM for full effect ~ ~ ~

Worthwhile If You're a Rush Fan.......2006-11-10

If you enjoy Rush's more recent albums, you'll like this one. But even though the band is playing their newer (relatively speaking) material, they seem to have gone back to a more classic live sound. This sounds more like what the All The World's A Stage band would have sounded like if they had played Rush's songs from the 90's. So it is more of a raw live sound. And it's also nice to hear them do some of their older songs like Natural Science that were previously unavailable in a live version (at least as an official band release). Also included is a live show from the 70's that you'll like having in your collection because you can see the band's progression from the 2112 era to the era of Exit Stage Left. There's so little of live Rush from the 70's!!!!

A very fine live rush album.......2006-06-07

Different stages is a very fine live album from Rush who are amongst my favourite progressive rock bands after Yes and Kansas.This compilation of three cd's contain some very fine songs in Limelight,Bastille day and Xanadu.This is the Rush collection to get as it contains material from their Atlantic label also.Highly recommended.

More Condescending Tripe From Rush.......2006-06-06

Look, I have never liked this band. Someone I know well and who's opinion about music I respect highly recently insisted that I listen to this new live Rush CD with the presumption that I would "come around" and "change my way of thinking about Rush" after a listen to it. It didn't work. I find the vast majority of this band's material to be soulless, progressive technometal slop. In their attempt over the years to come off as being intelligent and studied in their approach to rock music they have only succeeded, in my opinion, at producing thirty years of thoroughly mechanical, pretentious, condescending tripe designed to show off each member's supposed musical prowess which is then summarily topped off with "oh so deep" pseudo-intellectual lyrics designed to make 9th grade bongbrains feel as if they are smarter than everyone else because they are listening to it. It's never worked on me and as far as I am concerned this live CD set containing concert material spanning almost their entire career just reinforces my opinions about them. Sorry all of you Rush fans, I just refuse to be converted.

their best live album.......2006-05-16

I bought this set because of the 3rd cd. Being a longtime fan, I was dying to hear a concert from the 1978 era. Rush originally lost me on Exit...Stage left. Great songs, where did the guitars go?. Then their material got limper and limper, bottoming out with A Show of Hands. Still, being a huge fan, I bought everything holding out hope that some balls would return. After brief glimpses on Roll The Bones and Counterparts I had resigned my fate to knowing that Rush was lame now. Then came Different Stages. After hearing the versions of their newer songs (Bravado, Show don't Tell, Animate) I regained interst in all of the post-Pictures material. The sound is excellent and brings life to the cold, sterile, synthesized versions from the studio. Great set list (especially when factoring in the 1978 disc), covering their entire career. If you own nothing by Rush, this would be good place to start (along with The Spirit of Radio greatest hits). Also, about the 3rd disc: it sounds very raw, like there were no overdubs or tweaking at all. Interesting, but a hard listen.

This album has a unique sound unlike any other alt. rock group out there. The only thing negitive about the album is that it can be a little depressing, but that is understandable with what the lead singer has been through. This was the first and only album of Cold that I have bought. I would recommend this album to anyone.

For anyone else this would be good but..........2007-06-21

for Cold it is not. One thing about Cold is that they've always been very atmospheric and dark. I remember way back years ago, when their self-titled came out and was blown away by just how f@#%$#% dark it was. And, while a lot of that comes from Scooter's vocals, a good portion of that was the distorted and crunchy guitars which for the most part on this album are completely gone. Because of this, in my humble opinion this is no longer a metal album but it is a rock album. The songwriting is good and Scooter's vocals are good (although not as extreme) but simply, the heaviness is gone. And without the heaviness, Cold just seem like a decent rock band without an edge.

Hit or miss.......2007-06-12

While this album has some splendid material, the majority of it failed to hit the mark. This album is basically a collection of songs that are right on the border of being good, but not quite there. There are a few exceptions, such as "A Different Kind of Pain", "When Angels Fly Away", and "Feel it in Your Heart". None of the afformentioned songs are vintage Cold. I don't believe the majority of the songs on this album can hold a candle to any of the songs on "Year of the Spider".

All in all, not a horrible album, but I wouldn't consider it to be good.

I am one that thinks Cold has gotten better with age. I think they have matured a lot since their self-titled, nu-metal tinged debut. They have progressed into a straightforward hard rock band with above average vocals and songwriting capabilities. I give this one 4.5 stars, and I think it is their most solid effort.
