Product Description
Death in Vegas is a band that has an endless capacity for reinvention. Their three studio albums Dead Elvis, The Contino Sessions and Scorpio Rising have all been markedly different. Over the years, the band has evolved immensely and has continued to build their fan base.

Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes have used this creativity and flexibility to put together the 16th volume in the Back to Mine series. Its varied tracklisting will not disappoint. After collaborations with Liam Gallagher and Paul Weller on their Scorpio Rising LP, it was recently revealed that DIV are to produce the next Oasis album.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to this one the whole way through.......2005-10-03

This album is meant to be enjoyed from start to finish. It almost isn't fair to listen to the catchy, head-nodding singles ("Dirt" and "Rekkit") without also giving equal weight to the development of the album. You'll be surprised to see how Dead Elvis takes you through a journey starting in the reggae/groove genre, moves to a sampled-rock section and then finishes with several smooth, bass-driven and smart downtempo songs. It's production is flawless with content that will leave any music lover in peace. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Groovus.......2005-10-03

Easily one of my favorite albums; it flows as a real album should, slowly running a course through several moods and styles (all of them very... well, groovy). If you prefer quality of individual tracks, this album is loaded. Example: "Rematerialised" is an especially powerful, sexy piece that combines the rhythm of reggae with the dark intensity of the heroine-rock surrounding it on either side.

5 out of 5 stars Dead Elvis - always right.......2004-09-24

This album is absolutly amazing. it just creeps into your conciousness without you noticing, and in every situation thereafter you'll think "i know, i'll put on Dead Elvis". its just absoultly appropriate for every situation. and its funky as nobodys buiesness. Buy buy buy. the cantino sessions aint nearnly as good though.

5 out of 5 stars Like a journey.......2004-06-18

I was blown away by this album. There's so much on here to enjoy. It's really an experienece from start to finish. I couldn't believe how it all flowed together, the sounds and just everything. There's a reggae influence, then all of a sudden hard trance, and more. You have to listen to it from start to finish. At the end it gets pretty dubbed out! They use live instrumentation which sets them apart from other groups in this genre. Excellent stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet..........2003-09-01

I purchased this on a whim after hearing the song "Dirt" somewhere else... and I'm glad I did! It's totally unique, and that's a good thing. The best way to describe it would be to say it's filled with mixed beats and often eerie electronic melodies. Some of the songs are funky ("Dirt"), some are dreamy ("68 Balcony"), and some are pretty hard to classify ("Rekkit"), but all of them make for an interesting listen. Great music to just leave on while you're in the car, or chilling out. Love it, haven't gotten bored of it, and that's really all I can ask of a CD.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Diversity.......2006-09-10

It may take a while to grow on you but `Milk It' really is one of the most diverse cd's by a single artist that money can buy. Obviously there are several collaborations here (Iggy Pop and Liam Gallager's contributions being highlights) and they all work really well. DIV have covered so many genres that you will rarely have to change cd's. They go from rock n' roll to an electro `Orbital'/`Chrystal Method' sound, to chill out and back again. I can't stop listening, it's brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars High Protein.......2006-03-13

After the disappointing monotony of their latest album Satan's Circus, it's a pleasure to find Death In Vegas' former record company ransacking the archives for an obligatory hits collection that finds the duo at their ominous best. Amassed from only three albums, the psychedelic dance rock freak-outs gathered here are scorching reminders of the act's successful attempts to meld rock and electronica into an at times brutal and deathly pact with the Devil. Iggy Pop is possessed by an evil spirit on his vocal contribution Aisha, initial Death In Vegas breakthrough success Dirt and its muddy bassline still sound fresh and Hands Around My Throat is the best piece of S&M electroclash yet put to tape, with the diametric needy/controlling vocal of Adult's Nicole Kuperus being strangely hypnotic and alluring. Paul Weller fronting a cover of The Byrd's So You Say You've Lost Your Baby still seems strangely at odds with the forward-thinking nature of Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes' usual creations, but fellow UK music icon Bobby Gillespie makes up for the Weller lowpoint by issuing the freaked out vocal of Soul Auctioneer. The bonus disc of remixes fulfils the role of giving less aware listeners a window into the avenues Death In Vegas have previously explored on b-sides, with Dirt (Mullet Mix) restoring the Woodstock samples of the original version and Rocco (Dave Clarke Mix) predating Moby's Play with its use of haunting samples of Negro soul singers. The Oasis material that Death In Vegas produced last year may never see the light of day after disputes with Oasis lead to Fearless and Holmes' removal from the project, yet their own skills are at their best here on the low fat, high protein Milk It.

5 out of 5 stars 1997-2002.......2005-08-30

This is a good collection of Death In Vegas' music from 1997 to 2002. The first disc is a collection of their hits culled from their first three albums DEAD ELVIS (1997), THE CONTINO SESSIONS (1999) and SCORPIO RISING (2002). The second disc is filled with remixes of their well known hits. Overall a nice retrospective and good place for new fans to start out, or for other fans to have all the hits on one disc, as well as the remixes.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2007-01-12

If you are into this type of thing then you will absolutely LOVE it.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Matrix Tribute.......2005-12-13

Animatrix - The Album opens very strongly with the scintillating, mellowing, "Who Am I?," "Big Wednesday," and "Blind Tiger." The electronic arrangements fit very well with the psychological mood of the world of the Matrix. Unfortunately, tracks four through twelve are not as strong. Tracks eleven and twelve include music and dialouge from the original film score: but it is just the same three or four lines by Neo and Morpheus repeated over and over. In Track eleven, "Red Pill, Blue Pill," the only spoken words are "take the red pill; take the blue pill" over and over, by an unknown voice (not Reeves or Fishburne) and some amateur mixing that sounds like a "do it yourself Party DJ Mixer Kit." If you are at a Rave, I suppose these last two tracks would be right up your alley.

4 out of 5 stars an enigma.......2005-10-28

i've enjoyed most of the soundtracks on the animatrix cd but as i watch the movie i always miss sumthin outta it...does someone out there posses info on where i could get the soundtrack played when the girl goes lookin for her cat in the wiered building and finds them boys playin with the nature of the building...?and then just when the girl picks the feather from its hovering mode..the cat scares a white dove into flight then the music that i'm lookin for begins...if someone out there knows what i'm lookin for...plz page me on erwogera@hotmail.com

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2005-09-08

This CD has some really excellent tracks, some OK ones, and some that make you scratch you head with "what-were-the-artists-thinking" kind of bewilderment. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the track Masters of the Universe (when the Kid is escaping the Agents on his skateboard), amazingly, is omitted. However, the first track (the "credits" music), Supermoves, and Conga Fury are great fun to listen to.
As for the genre itself, Trance seems to me to be the equivalent of classical music for our time. Some is good, some is bad, but it all gives you a sense of free-mind feel, without words or lyrics or pop influences mucking up the experience of the music itself. If that makes any sense...

5 out of 5 stars Somewhere around a 4.7.......2005-08-01

Nope... its not another unenjoyable rap or pop album. What I'm trying to get at is that its so, so sad that electronic music is not popular and deserves to be. Repeatable lovey-dovey pop and false rap is what mostly strikes listeners through the radio. Though I do understand electronic music is meant for mainstream listening and is meant to stay deep underground in the clubs, lets hope to see electronic music favored in the future.

Due to some great electronic tracks left out from the film, I did give the compilation a 4.5, but nonetheless, being a huge electronic/techno fan, is a very well done and not far from a masterpiece.

Most Favored Track:
"Beauty Never Fades"
"Martenot Waves"
"Under The Gun"
"Hands Around My Throat"
"Conga Fury"
& a few from the film that were sadly left out.

4 out of 5 stars Good electronic-music; second disc rules; a great D.I.V. starting place........2006-03-10

I purchased this two-disc set for 14 bucks at a used-music store, mainly because of the cover's eerie drawings, and I expected the music to match the look and feel of the cover-art. I was dead wrong, but that wasn't necessarily horrible. SATAN'S CIRCUS has a very happy feel to it, and one is hard-pressed to admit that he / her has never gotten the urge to jump up and perform the "robot" dance while listening to this album (it happens almost every time I listen to). I knock off a few points for having misleading cover-art, but it loses more points for being repetitive, unoriginal, and having annoying drums that don't come anywhere near complimenting the keyboards and exquisite sampling. Overall, SATAN'S CIRCUS' first disc is a huge disappointment from such a promising band like Death In Vegas.

All hope is not lost, however, because the second disc is a true gem. Not only do all the songs sound wonderful (which is becoming increasingly rare with most modern live-discs) and flow together effortlessly, but they sound subtly different then their album versions, and in some cases, they even surpass their album-counterparts. None of them are featured on the first SATAN'S CIRCUS disc, so you have no worries about overlapping tracks whatsoever (even if you own all of D.I.V.'s previous albums). I find myself listening to the live-disc more and more, and sadly, the first disc is acquiring quite a bit of dust as the days pass by.

The good (but not great) tracks on disc one that aren't too terrible are "Sons Of Rother," "Head," and "Heil Xanax" (the later being the only track on the first disc matching the gothic cover-art). As for the second disc, all the tracks are wonderful, except the overly-drawn-out intro "Leather." My personal faves are "Flying," "Help Yourself" (both bare a close resemblance to Bilinda Butcher's sensual voice), "Scorpio Rising" (which sounds startling different then the one off of its original album), and my favorite of either of the discs, "Hands Around My Throat". It's truly one of the best songs of all time. Emotional, tragic, sarcastic (at times), and brilliantly preformed, it is one of the best album-closers of all time (akin to Joy Division's "The Eternal" and NIN's "Ring-finger").

Bottom line is that, while this album is a treat to listen to, it's not very good. However, I do recommend it as a wonderful starting place for people interested in D.I.V. (mainly because of the live disc). It probably doesn't deserve it, but I'm going to grant it 4-stars simply because of the second-disc. Now I must leave, and please forgive my liberal use of parenthesis (I can't help it, I swear!).

3 out of 5 stars CAUTION.......2006-03-07

As one previous reviewer pointed out: these two discs are vastly different in both texture and effect. I found this dual CD at Hastings for like 6 bucks, and by the end of the first disc I was totally ready to try and sell it to my buddy or another used shop for 3-5 bucks. But, when I put in the second disc to confirm the set was crap, I was suddenly suprisingly won over (perhaps to the point of eventually legitimizing the first disc). The texture changes drastically from long, minimal, uneventful, very mechanized feeling loops that just sit there (disc #1) to instrumental/atmospheric synth rock that really gets up and participates with the listener (disc #2). My interest in this group starts with my buddy trying to turn me on to them. This guy loves Kraftwerk, but loves dub style music even more. I fear he too will have mixed feelings about Satan's Circus (pun intended), because althought it is absolutly drenched with the influence of the droning loops of groups like Kraftwerk and even Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb, what it sorely lacks is the identity lent to those groups due to them having vocals, and my friend should be dissapointed to discover Death in Vegas being absent of Dub almost entirely (on both discs). Disc two is proof enough that vocals are not the only solution, but it's also proof that disc one's approach is consistently both sterile and almost painfully monotonous (I like industrial and I hate techno). I compose beats myself and I understand the ethics of droning loops, but I must say that I have completly failed to put this release into any context that can justify Death In Vegas resorting to such a dated sound--only breifly nostalgic or retro really, but mostly just dated and mundane. This is especially sad since the second disc goes so far as to prove what Crystal Method lack, which is an organic and beleivable flow to their hi-fi synth fuled rock anthems (CM depend on guests). I trully beleive that Death in Vegas had the chance to come out and crush all the post-techno dance duos trying to inch into live band territory (and out of the decaying American rave scene), but instead they emerged with a batting average just below the new Chemical Brothers CD and WAY below the new Prodigy CD. None the less, I am keeping it in hopes that it might grow on me.

4 out of 5 stars Hypnotic . . ........2006-01-09

. . . mechanical, repetitive, kinda trippy -- the songs on SATAN'S CIRCUS (disc 1) are all slowly evolving instrumentals. To me, this is great chill out/coming down music. Great background music for working on the computer or whatever. Truthfully, I'm not sure why else you'd listen to it. It's not exactly rockin'. I wouldn't say it qualifies as party music (not for your average party at least). It's cool though.

On the other hand, the bonus live CD sounds much more like a rockin' good time. The audience definitely sound like they enjoyed themselves. Consisting of two guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, plus whatever main members Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes do, the live band changes up the original recordings enough to keep things interesting. This stuff is loaded with cool beats and bubbling electronics. Sometimes the atmosphere gets pretty heavy and intense, other times, it's gorgeous and serene. Although most people wouldn't call these guys musical geniuses or anything, what they do here is very cool and pretty tripped out. You can really groove on this one.

Both of these disks are very good in their own way at doing what they're intended to do, so for that I recommend this release. Most people seem to prefer their dubby debut DEAD ELVIS over everything else, but my fav Death In Vegas by far is still CONTINO SESSIONS - I recommend getting that one first if yer new to DIV.

Richard Fearless has earned his name. Death in Vegas's 1997 debut, Dead Elvis, established him as a defiant DJ, mixing techno with weird dub, rock, and industrial. Despite itself, the disc spawned a hit ("Dirt"), an experience he may have wished to replicate here, though Contino pushes even harder in multiple directions. Many high-profile guests add to the blend of smooth grooves, noisy ambience, and raucous rock rhythms. Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie conjures a laid-back hip-hop posture for "Soul Auctioneer," while Jim Reid makes "Broken Little Sister" sound a lot like his own band, Jesus and Mary Chain. On "Aisha," Iggy Pop's wicked monologue could rival Nick Cave's creep-factor were it not for Fearless's musical playfulness. From gospel choirs and organs to Americana twang, deep bass rumblings to spacey sci-fi sounds, The Contino Sessions is a psychedelic trip with bravery and grit. --Liisa Ladouceur

5 out of 5 stars Dark Without the Death.......2003-04-01

This album is a rare example of that music which manages to be dark and moody without causing involuntary wrist slitting or head-bang whiplash. The opening track, "Dirge", is representative of everything that is great about modern American rock music. The track contains simple, effective riffs obscured by gritty overdrives and thundering bass beats that are utterly addictive. The track also reveals the band's knack for increasing the tension and power in a song without advertising the fact. The result is a song which swells and pumps along, carrying the listener on a musical waterslide until the instruments seem to crash into the pool at the bottom leaving said listener both exhilarated and exhausted.
Try not to feel like a member of the trenchcoat mafia as the album's pivotal track 'Aisha' proclaims: "I think there's something you aughta know. I'm a murderer." The agressive rhythm combines with the sinister lyrics to provoke a sense of latent 'cool' in the listener.
Not all the tracks are stand out. Neither are they all heavy and dark. 'Flying' is one of the best tracks on the album but contains only feelings of airy joy as the various electronic rhythms swoop and, well, fly.
Death in Vegas are a rare breed of artist. They belong to a movement arguably started by the Velvet Underground but now frequented by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, and others. These are the bands that will save the world from hyper-conformist pop. Vive le Death.

5 out of 5 stars dark , luscious and fun.......2002-09-21

This one sounds a lot better to me than what I've heard of the dubby DEAD ELVIS. Richer. Darker. A good mix of instruments and trippy electronics. Most of the tracks here are instrumental, "Death Threat" being the trippiest of them - a real head spinner. Most of the instrumentals actually display a more positive mood than the oneÂ's with featured vocalists.

"Dirge" is a slow build with a haunting quality (an overused term but it's true) - layers of guitar, then "la la la" little girl style vocals (actually, it's not a turn-off), then drums, then bass is added until the whole thing builds up to a screeching frenzy.

"Aisha" is a twisted little nugget featuring Iggy Pop playing a sicko to a groovy beat. My favorite track is "Broken Little Sister" with Jim Reid of Jesus and Mary Chain. It actually sounds quite a bit like that group - same kind of darkness and distortion - very luscious and gloomy. Then the final instrumental finishes the set with a more hopeful tone. A worthy vacation for the brain.

5 out of 5 stars One Of A Kind.......2001-10-28

There's a reason why Ed Simons of the Chemical Brothers is such a huge fan of this disc (besides the obvious one that Richard Fearless is a pal of theirs). It is quite simply one of the most creative and endearing discs to be released in the past few years.

I will admit that it took me some time to come around to it. Its dark, at times disturbing... if you are looking for pop-friendly hooks or accesable melodies, this is not the place to go. But if you are in the mood for a richly dense album that will yield great rewards for repeat listenings, this is for you.

There are a few stand-out tracks: Dirge is a comparitively quiet intro to the album, a slow-building jazz stomper that acts as a kind of thesis statemtn for the album as a whole. Lever Street is a simple tune, consisting primarily of what sounds to be a Hammond organ - one of the saddest songs I can remember, supremely evocative of heartbreak and despair. Neptune City closes the album - it's one of my very favorite songs, a euphoric capstone to an emotionally draining experience.

All in all, I consider this an essential album. It takes your preconceived notions of what electronic dance music can or should be and stretches them like taffy.

5 out of 5 stars Ok. I wanna talk about Aisha only...............2001-09-29

The whole cd is clas, but Aisha stands head and shoulders above everything.

My first hearing was soley for the music. I didnt pay too much attention to the lyrics. I love their blend of funky beats and the journey it takes your body.

Last night i lay and listened to the lyrics. Of course i was still 'bopping' but MAN.....the sound of the voice is PERFECT.....the analogy hes using i think ive figured out, but the simple use of very poignant one-line lyrics kicks. i mean, when he says 'HE GOT OUT'.....sent shivers down my spine. I heard myself loudly uttering 'This is GENIUS' over and over again......

I defy you to hear this song, to not feel the power, to not hear the ingenuity, to not want to go and buy every cd theyve done just in the off chance that they might have gotten close to this again somewhere else.

Like Morcheeba, DIV have fallen off hard with their latest release. (You've been warned: stay away from 'Fragments of Freedom!'). 'Dead Elvis' was easily one of the finest, most inventive electronic/dance discs ever released, and it covered all of the bases: it was ambient, big-beat, trance, dub-reggae and hip-hop funky all at once. And they made it look so easy! Basically, they captured on a single disc the types of music so many of us have in our CD collections at home. So now it comes as a surprise that after such an auspicious debut they have fallen into the old sophomore slump in a big way. From what I've read, they lost some personnel after releasing their first disc and before recording the second. And it shows. Most of the tracks are hookless wonders, with neither form nor direction. As others here have written already, 'Dirge' is a nice opener, but it becomes tedious after five minutes. Again, the Iggy Pop tune is a nice touch, but that's pretty much all there is to write home about on this recording. Whatever happened to DIV has seriously hurt them in the creativity department and it needs to be rectified before their next release.

Very disappointing.

Continuing in the darkly epic vein of 1999's The Contino Sessions, Death In Vegas's Scorpio Rising layers psychedelic fuzz and electronic scenery over slow-burning dance-rock. DIV's DJ duo Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes veer madly between new wave revivalism ("Hands Around My Throat") and straight-up rock remakes ("So You Say You Lost Your Baby"), with shoegazer clamor and goth treacle in the crawlspaces. Like Sessions, the record features high-profile guest vocalists; this time, Oasis's Liam Gallagher, Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and former Jam frontman Paul Weller are on hand to juice up the record's pop-dance hybrid appeal. Gallagher has the most success, putting his scruffy rock god pose to good use on the intensely catchy title track. There's nothing here that significantly changes the band's formula, but Scorpio Rising stays interesting and relevant with a jumble of high drama and chaotic influences. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars Great (dare I say it) chill-out music..........2006-04-16

Death In Vegas' "Scorpio Rising" is a delicious mix of slow burning rock, ice cold electro and hippy mantras. Some would be familiar with "Girls", a slow burning rock fuzz track with dreamy vocals (included in the Lost in Translation OST), others would know the Liam Gallagher - Scorpio Rising track (not to dissimilar with Liam's previous collaborations with the Chemical Brothers) - so so catchy. Others would know the bitter icy track of "Hands Around My Throat" - where Death in Vegas use the electroclash sounds to brilliant effect (my favourite track).

Death in Vegas step in and out of various musical styles with the slightest of ease throughout Scorpio Rising. This is the sort of CD that is brilliant for dinner parties and such. Cool, modern and sexy.

One small blip on the CD is the misjudged "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" with Paul Weller - a out of place rock tune which just grates against the smoothness of the rest of the CD.

Overall - if you like (dare I say it) "chill-out" music - then you will probably like this.

3 out of 5 stars identity crisis.......2005-09-29

i guess Death In Vegas have a few famous pals and these pals were gracious enough to lend their vocals to some of these songs. the basic mood here is dark rock music with a danceable edge. or perhaps the other way around. but there's alot of shifts in moods and atmosphere. the opening track kinda reminds me of some of those 4AD bands like Swallow or maybe Ultra Vivid Scene, with it's distorted bass and cool breathy female background vocals. a pretty good way to start the record. but as the album continues, there seems to be a lack of focus. this record doesn't really grab me as a whole; even though there are some good songs on it. one feeling i get is that i am never really getting to know Death In Vegas for who they are. it's like all their songs were specifically written for their special guests. the mellow acoustic numbers go to Hope Sandoval, the electro groove numbers go to the more throaty singers, etc. it seems a little too safe and in the box. but like i said, there are some nice moments. Scorpio Rising is a fairly enjoyable album, just not an essential one.

I just have one thing to say

"I love this album"

thank you

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2004-01-30

At first listen, I didnt like it as much as the Contino Sessions, which is brilliant in my opinion, but the second time I listened to it, I realized that I did in fact love this album. All songs are really good. I was surprised to see "Girls" in the Lost In Translation soundtrack. (They should have put the Peaches song on it too... You all know which one...Wimps...) Its hard to pick favorites, as they are all good, but I would have to say 'Scorpio Rising', and the 2 Hope Sandoval songs, because I love her. Especially the last song, 'Help Yourself'. OK, so I have an absolute favorite. It is 'Help Yourself'. A very long song, but absolutely worth it. Ill be looking forward to their next album with baited breath. Good work guys. Keep it up.

5 out of 5 stars The Death Are back.......2003-10-16

This latest Album from Death In Vegas has to be there greatest work yet. The title track Scorpio Rising with Liam Gallagher supplying the vocals has to be the pick of the bunch. This one track is worth the price of the album, however you shouldn't think this album is a one hit wonder all the other tracks are excellent. They will reach out and tenderly rap themselves around your ear drums, until you find yourself play the album over and over again. Well I did away, just buy the album and you will find out.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect mix!.......2006-12-08

I think this is a perfect mix. The song selection is great and tight! I have to admit that I was hesitant to purchase this at first because i really don't care for these dj compilations. I find them dull and pointless. But I've been a fan of Death In vegas' original music for years now and decided to give it a chance especially since i got my copy at the tower records going out of business sale!
All i can really say is that if you're into interesting electronic music then this is for you!

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant mix set.......2006-01-24

Having not bought many mix CDs, I heard this in Tower and immediately bought it. It's such an interesting blend between techno, house industrial and old skool electro. It blends so well that it is almost the perfect mix album. I say almost because the mixing of tracks is not as fluid as can be heard on say Laurent Garnier's superb Excess Luggage. A few of the tracks just seem to introduce themselves unannounced from out of nowhere and while that in itself is no bad thing, particularly when the songs are good, it does tend to be a little jarring. But this should be essential to not just Death in Vegas fans but electro fans as well. But then they could be one and all really.

5 out of 5 stars Shut Up And Listen!.......2006-11-11

Ever seen Swervedriver live? Like walls of sound? Dig it all thrown in a blender? This band would be popular if they would just stop recording such amazingly diverse albums. So, really, shut up, and listen. You'll be glad did. P.s. The 2nd disc live album is worth the price of admission alone. iPoders make sure you listen to the whole album in one motion.

4 out of 5 stars Please People..................2003-05-06

.........if you MUST criticize DIV for being too 'retro' because of an appearence by Liam Gallagher (hipsters LOVE to hate Oasis) at least prove to me you can spell his name correctly. No, it's not spelled 'Galagher'.......but thanks for playing.

As for my two cents on the album - it's top. It mixes electronic and transient-style to create an aural ambience all it's own. Blending 60's psychedelica (GASP! How COULD they?) on some tunes and more modern noise on others, it's a winning combo.

Cameos by Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) Paul Weller (the Jam) and yes, Mr. Liam Gallagher are all first rate: It's Liam's punk rock-style that hits home hardest to me on the title cut "Scorpio Rising." He sings with a venom he hasn't had since `Definitely Maybe.' Awesome. Weller's cut, a re-working of Gene Clarke's "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" is another gem. In fact, it's one of the strongest Paul's put his vocals to since his solo career started. Hope Sandoval contributions are angelic yet rough, creating just the type of contrast DIV want.

Make no mistake - this isn't retro (and if we're using that godawful label, isn't ALL music really retro?) at all - DIV are doing their own thing, which to me, can only be right.

Don't listen to detractors who can't even spell the name of the artist they're bashing. Just check the album out and judge for yourselves.

5 out of 5 stars NO FILLERS OR REDUNDANCY HERE!!!.......2003-02-28

I'm actually shocked that some reviewers are calling this release redundant or say it's containing filler material. Nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion.I was anxiously awaiting the release of this CD and I wasn't dissapointed one bit.I had already purchased the 2 "Hands Around My Throat" single CD's & DVD and SCORPIO RISING lived up to my anticipations.
"Leather" is an instrumental(most groups don't have the intestinal fortitude to release instrumentals at all)that starts out as annoying fuzz and ends with annoying feedback turning into fuzz that becomes the opening of the second song, "Girls". What more could anyone ask from a song? "Leather" builds to an eighties underground pop(yes, there really is such a genre)feel.
"Girls" builds itself with electronic and vocal layering until it becomes a fast-paced worthy of any dance floor and then BAM...DIV masterfully brings it down to minimalist style to end.
"Hands Around My Throat" is the first song on the CD to actually feature vocal leads. It starts out with the irksome(read that as great) click of a scratched vinyl disc which soon becomes part of the beat. This is a tremendous song.
"23 Lies" is a slower paced offering with some great vocal work by Susan Lillane.
The title tune, "Scorpio Rising", is reminiscent of a drug induced journey back to 1966 and the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Liam Gallagher's vocals add the perfect touch here.
"Killing Smile", featuring Hope Sandoval on vocals, fits the style & sound of the music to a T."Killing Smile" is a bit of bluegrass meeting the underground with a little classical reinforcement.
"Nalja" certainly isn't filler material by any stretch of the imagination. DIV has always dared to be eclectic. You never know what's coming next, but you can always count on the musical excitement it will bring you, without fail.
"So You Say You Lost Your Baby" is a true classic that never made it.Paul Weller stops in to add his vocal touch on this 35 year old gem originally written and recorded by the late Gene Clarke of the original Byrds. This is another great trip back to '66 Hollywood.
"Living Horses" slow moving, moody sound accentuates Dot Allison's beautiful vocals. This is another masterpiece not to be missed.
The final song "Help Yourself" had Hope Sandoval returning to do the singing. This is yet another great song that builds in just the right places at just the right times, right up through the stylish, softened conclusion.
I don't know what DIV fans were expecting, but I fail to see how this CD could be much better than it already is. There's absolutely nothing wrong with looking to both the past and future at the same time, and this CD does just that. The mix and production could never be improved upon, and for me to say that is almost unbelieveable in itself. "SCORPIO RISING" is a major music lesson for all who dare listen.

3 out of 5 stars Floating away into mushroom Hell.......2003-02-04

This album gets 3 stars for "Hands Around My Throat" and the last track alone. Other than that, what we have here is a band that seems to be trading in musical innovation for redundant experiments in psychedelia. It almost makes the gutsy "Contino Sessions" LP look like a fluke. It's tough to tell if they'll pull it together for the next album, and for now I'm just going to assume they recorded this album while on a very bad, very extended mushroom trip. Because they really have proven themselves to be a great band in the past. Check out "Contino Sessions" and "Dead Elvis." They don't disappoint the way "Scorpio Rising" does.

4 out of 5 stars A good mix.......2002-11-27

This album offers a great mix of musical styles, though some of the songs occasionally sound a bit to much like fillers in between the better tracks. Hand around my throat is a great old style track and I even liked the beatlesque title track with a cameo by Liam Gallacher.

3 out of 5 stars looking for some obscure beauties?.......2005-07-20

If the back to mine series has one great positive it's that it brings some forgotten (but not necessarily old) greats out of the closet. Songs:Ohia's "Soul" and MMM's "Donna" are two great examples here. The two tracks are distant cousins in the music world but they make this compilation worthwhile. While "Soul" truly gives a white man hope of recording something plaintive and genuine, "Donna" is fantastic at tearing down the estate it was (supposedly) made in. Sierra Oscar... we have a noise complaint on....!

The Back to mine's are running out of ideas by the time Death in Vegas get to do their version. Evidence: it is not surprising to see some Lee Perry dub with the Upsetter's "Cloak & Dagger". The cynic would use this as another example of some white boys looking for creole street cred. but hey aren't all cynics disillusioned romantics?

By track two and fad gadget it gets back to the ethnic centre of where Death in Vegas come from and one of the UK music scene's strengths, i.e no wave music with lyrics delivered with "dire dire dire" all over them. But that's a good thing.

In all there is a good smattering of genres/artists across this comp: Dr Nina Simone has better stuff but she's always great but those two aforementioned tracks remain head and shoulders above the rest (even Joy Division and that is no mean feat in these days Joy Division hysteria!).

5 out of 5 stars Death In Vegas - Back to Mine ... a treasure box!.......2004-04-06

Okay, okay, okay, don't listen to the joker who says to save your money on this one, cause he's wrong! If you are a fan of the Back To Mine series or just like very, interesting, well mixed, with a bit of thought behind them, comp albums then this album is by and far worth your precious dough. If you love music, and I'm talkin' about all kinds here, because this CD has got it all... Death In Vegas have out done themselves. This album is loaded with pearls! If you are a fan of the beat, this albums with satisfy, if you are a fan of the groove, this album will satisfy, if you are a fan of songs that will break your heart and then turn around and make you realize you love life just because of music, this album will satisfy. I'm tellin' you! Every song on this album is worth the price alone:
1- The Upsetters 'Cloak & Dagger" - just a chill reggae beat that'll slap a grin on your face as soon as you hear the flow. Sweet and slow with horns... yes, please!!
2 - Fad Gadget - 'Back To Nature - oh, another great track from the minute it starts, totally awesome 80's track that'll have you singin' Back to Nature by the end. Clever and catchy... and a terrific beat.
3 - Gene Clark & The Godsin Brothers 'Only Colombe' - alright, Gene Clark's vibe is felt on this album twice, once here and later with Dillard & Clark, yet on this one you get the up beat Clark, sounding a bit Dylan-ish, with Only Colombe, a great song and the beat, oh my god, this is a old school song don't get me wrong, but it has such a great beat and flow to it... and the piano. If all songs were like this, music would solve the worlds problems.
4 - Nina Simone - "My Sweet Lord" Simone covers George Harrison's classic and makes it totally her own. You'll feel like your right up front for Sunday gathering, but Church music, to me, rarely reaches this level, but you'll be praising right along with Nina. Great song for a sunny day!
5 - Songs: Ohia - 'Soul' The gem of this treasure chest that Death In Vegas has given us is in this song, Soul by Songs : Ohia. Not much is said about this song in the albums liner notes, which rock by the way, and I couldn't find this song on any of Songs: Ohia albums. (I'm not that familiar with Songs: Ohia however, yet that is no more) Death In Vegas put it out for us and thank you, because this song has such beauty to it. The vocals are heartbreaking and the backing is simple and perfect. This is one song that truly gets better every time you hear it. I hope you feel the same because I can't imagine anyone listening to this song and not feel anything. Another song that could change the world.
6. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - 'Nashville Blues' Remember, all types of music are on display here and this is great pickin' and playin' music from the NGDB, a toe tapping tune... no vocals needed, the music says it all.
7. Dillard & Clark - 'Polly' Another Gene Clark song and this time is country Clark, yet it doesn't matter, this song is a diamond. I know I've said it already, but this is another song that will break your heart and fall in love. Songs don't get much better. Dillard & Clark only had two albums, but this one song cements their legacy in my mind. Musical bliss.
8. Sam Gopal - 'The Sky Is Burning' Delving further into the musical basement, Death In Veags come up with this psychedelic tune that is as chill as the day Gopal recorded it. Another great groove that puts you right back in the day. The lyrics are from another world! A+

9. Bo Diddley - 'Elephant Man' - Hey, Bo Diddley!!! No not that song, this song kicks the crap out of that song and every song and person that never gave Diddley the proper respect. If this tune was on the radio today it would be #1 without a doubt. Don't be surprised to hear this in a car commercial or some advertisment someday. A pumping tune. Bo knows.
10. Cowboy Junkies - 'Sweet Jane' - Oh, and Death In Vegas brings it down, oh so slow and so sweet with Sweet Jane by the Cowboy Junkies, it's also in Natural Born Killers by the way cause when I first heard it I wondered where it was from as well). But the Junkies do Lou Reed more justice than maybe neccessary, or perhaps they even out do him, you decide?
11. Au Pairs - 'Headache for Michelle' ... and right back to the funk with this one. Out of his head!! (you'll get it) Great drums, guitars and the vocals, oh man, this lady has got soul! Feel her pain and groove with her. She will seduce you, no matter!
12. Piero Piccioni - 'Psychedelic Mood' A dope beat with the a nice organ piece flow and guitar. A swingin' tune that'll make anyone nod their noggin'.
13. Joy Division - ' Decades' Just start clapping your hands now and playing air keyboard cause this song will control you. Classic Joy Division. Again the beat... the beat, awww!
14. MMM - 'Donna' This is as much techno you'll get on this album, one song, and when one song's this good, you don't need any other. Gets awkward at the end, but hey, it's techno. Read the liner notes on this one, interesting to say the least!
These songs should be delt with from beginning to end! Once this album is in your view, buy with confidence! Once this album is in your head, you'll never be able to shake it.
You will thank Death In Vegas one day, and now so shall I, thank you, Death In Vegas, thank you!
