While English pop monarchs Duran Duran have remained active for two decades, it's clear that the indomitable ensemble was at its peak during those mercurial '80s. This greatest-hits collection documents the band's ambitious beginnings as a funky glam-rock outfit and follows its gradual transformation into a high-tech pop band with loads of commercial appeal. Featuring now-classic tunes like "Girls on Film," "Rio," and "Planet Earth" as well as more recent songs like "Ordinary World," Greatest focuses on Duran Duran's unending string of hit singles. Although the young quintet that performs "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "A View to a Kill" has little in common with the posh, aging trio featured on 1997's "Electric Barbarella," vocalist Simon Le Bon provides some impressive continuity to these proceedings. --Mitch MyersCustomer Reviews:
the wild boy are calling ,and i'm answering!.......2007-07-24
Duran Duran leave a strong legacy.......2007-07-16
These songs have stood the test of time and still sound good. Proof is that most of their work is still in print and selling over 20 years later. Here are some highlights:
1) Is There Something I Should Know? --A good opening and one of my favorites. Catchy as hell and a prime example of Simon Le Bon's talent for giving a song energy and urgency with intense singing and lyrics. "People stare and cross the road from me/And jungle drums they all clear the way for me/Can you read my mind, can you see in the snow/And fiery demons all dance when you walk through that door" --How many pop song's today have fiery demons in them? None.
2) The Reflex --One of their biggest hits and it was overplayed on the radio, but you can't deny the originality of this song. It goes in all kinds of unexpected directions and we'll never hear a pop song like this again. Some of Le Bon's most obscure lyrics.
3) A View to Kill --One of the best Bond themes and I think what makes this song is the pounding drums and the Bond-like horns.
4) Ordinary World --A later hit for them and one of their most beautiful. Highlights are the guitar solo and soaring vocals at the end.
5) Save a Prayer --Very close to Ordinary World as one of their best ballads. The magical keyboards by Nick Rhodes grab you immediately and "You saw me standing by the wall/Corner of a main street/And the lights are flashing on your window sill" --draws you in.
6) Rio --A defining song for them that everyone knows. John Taylor drives this song with killer bass, Nick Rhodes with great keyboards, Roger Taylor with excellent drumming, and Andy Taylor completes a band in top form. Even though this is the edited version the memorable sax solo is there. I bought this cd so I felt justified downloading the full version from the net which is about 5:37.
7) Hungry Like the Wolf --One of the most famous uses of "do do do do do, do do." The song that made them famous in America because of the video. Has that signature sort of tribal, jungle Duran Duran sound. A classic.
10) Union of the Snake --Another one of my favorites. Unorthodox verses and choruses make this song unique.
11) New Moon on Monday --Once again Simon Le Bon brings a song to great heights with an excellent vocal performance and "I light my torch and wave it for the/New moon on monday/And a firedance through the night/I stayed the cold day with a lonely satellite". You ponder those words during the song and interesting images are put in your mind and that's what good lyrics do.
12) Wild Boys --This song might be a bit over-the-top for some but it's power can't be denied. Simon sings the hell out of this one.
13) Notorious --Does it ever end? Yet another ridiculously catchy song.
14) I Don't Want Your Love (Shep Pettibone Mix) --A solid dance song that has aged well. Can't be resisted.
19) Come Undone --The sister hit to Ordinary World. Dreamy underwater sound with the backing beat made famous previously by Erik B. & Rakim.
Pretty female backing vocals and nice lyrics: "Words, playing me deja vu, like a radio tune I swear I've heard before/Chill, is it something real, or the magic Im feeding off your fingers."
And the other songs I didn't mention are good too. I bought "Astronaut", their latest cd as of this writing, and it's pretty good I like it. It doesn't match these songs though and I don't fault them. They were at their peak of creativity during this period and these songs are too good to be topped. Fortunately the 80s backlash is long over and it seems Duran Duran are finally getting the recognition they deserve, especially after people see them live in person or on TV (Live Earth for example). It's about time!
not too good..........2007-07-09
Slick sounds by guys in white suits.......2007-05-26
Besides just catchy, synth-laden pop, Duran Duran were capable of adding soul to their sound ("I Don't Want Your Love"), a cold but sexy club-music vibe ("All She Wants Is") and real emotion and exoticism ("Come Undone"). Songs from the first three Duran Duran records are well represented here, and nice offerings from the same era such as "A View to a Kill" and "Wild Boys" are also present.
Duran Duran also had a nice, somewhat reinvented run in the 1990s, especially the early `90s. The songs "Serious," "Ordinary World," "Come Undone" and "Electric Barbarella" (from Medazzaland) prove that. "Serious," from 1990, sounds like a wonderful `80s leftover, updated in an organic fashion for the new decade, while "Skin Trade," a tune released in 1986, has a slick, catchy sound, but also displays some real soul and great vocal work by Simon LeBon. Though they barely received any radio airplay, each of these tunes could lay claim to being two of the strongest tracks on "Greatest," a CD that is chock full of classics. My only complaint is that "Too Much Information" from Duran Duran 2 (The Wedding Album) was left off, but beggars can't be choosers. Many non-hits by the band have been great, but if you're looking for your fix of the most popular Duran Duran music over the years, this CD is the way to go.
Get your Duran Duran Fix.......2007-05-16
As for this collection, it's all the Duran Duran a person needs--and maybe even then some. Every single one of hits are here--including their James Bond song, "A View to a Kill," and early nineties hits like "Come Undone." You might have some gripes about which versions they use (for example, why the US edit for "Rio?"), but you can't argue with the track list as a whole. You've got all the smash hits (Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film), as well as the popular tracks that aren't as well known (All She Wants Is, New Moon on Monday, The Reflex). This is a great collection for anyone who's a fan of eighties music or a Duran Duran lover.

Is there anything that simply screams the 1970s' most indelible pop cultural clichés--the sunny romanticism, perfect vocal hooks, feathered hair, stacked heels, and flared sateen britches--more than the Swedish pop phenomenon Abba? And while many a pundit snootily dismissed them during their prime as some sort of prefabricated aberration, their worldwide popularity peaked somewhere just south of Beatlesmania. Indeed, Abba's music was as finely tooled and crafted as anything to come from a Volvo or IKEA factory--if occasionally more economically potent. This double-disc, 37-track anthology comes neatly on the heels of Mama Mia!, the smash, if unlikely, Broadway show based on the band's hits, and documents every single released by the band's Polar label in their home country as well as key tracks released internationally. This is the canon from whence the term "Europop" sprang. With a continental sense of vocal neoclassicism, informed by just the right ethnic clichés (and oft wed to the era's insistent 4/4 disco beat) to make songs like "Mama Mia," "Fernando," "Chiquitita," and "Voulez-Vous" work on a global scale, the writing team of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and their respective partners in music and life, Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad, developed the seamless, wall-of-sound productions contained herein. The Definitive Collection features a rare single remix of "Ring, Ring" and a 1979 promo-only extended mix of "Voulez-Vous" as bonus tracks, as well as a concise, illustrated history of the band and each track. --Jerry McCulley

80's nostalgia.......2007-06-11
Songs like WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN (the Bangles), WALKING ON SUNSHINE (Katrina and the Waves), HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH (Belinda Carlisle) and I KNOW THERE'S SOMETHING GOING ON (Frida) are almost pure nostalgia straight-from-the-bottle.
For me, the 2 best songs are MANEATER (Hall & Oates) and HANDS TO HEAVEN (Breathe). MANEATER is the best song Hall & Oates ever wrote, and it also describes quite a few sadistic women I've met in my life. HANDS TO HEAVEN takes me back to the first time I heard it. It was in boot camp & was the first time they allowed us to listen to the radio. For a few brief moments I was able to in my mind get away from the United States Navy!
I've never cared for Huey Lewis & The News, but POWER OF LOVE is their best song & the song they're most known for. I like Pat Benatar, but never thought LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD was one of her best songs. I would have much preferred SHADOWS OF THE NIGHT, but that's just my opinion.
The biggest gaffe on the album in my mind is Falco's ROCK ME AMADEUS. I never cared for it, even though I'm a big fan of classical music (including Mozart!). Never seemed there was much substance to it, and it's little wonder that Falco was basically a 1-hit wonder.
All-in-all, however, the majority of the songs on this album fit nicely for everyone who went to High School during the 80s. If you graduated from HS in 1980-something, give this CD a try!

The first one is the 4 munites and 4 seconds edit of "I Know There's Something Going On" which is now only available on Frida's album "Something's Going On" as bonus track.
The second song is Tears For Fears "Shout" that clocks at 4 minutes and 6 seconds which again is only available on the latest DELUXE re-issue of "Songs From The Big Chair".
The third and last song is Falco's rare "Canadian Version" (4 minutes and 8 seconds) which is an edit to the 8 minutes and 21 seconds of "Salieri Version" that was released on the US version CD of "Falco 3" by A&M records in 1985. However, I noticed many of you are trying to locate this song without paying big $$$ for the long deleted Falco 3 CD and you can only find it on 2 CDs, one of them is Falco 'Hit Singles' released by Warner in 1998 again now it's out-of-print (try Amazon Germany for a cheaper second hand) and the other one titled "I love Techno Pop vol.2" which is still in print only in Spain and by the way an awesome compilation of 12inch hits, you can find it and buy it at Blanco Y Negro official website.
Anyway, a must for hardcore fan of the 80's.

Violator is Depeche Mode's most mainstream, chart-climbing album. Although it contains only nine tracks, half of them are tailor-made for the dance floor. This album was conceived when dance-club DJs were gaining recognition alongside original composers. Heavily influenced by techno-pop, the singles "Policy of Truth," "Enjoy the Silence," and "World in My Eyes" prove that DM did their homework. A particular highlight on this fantastic album is the bluesy guitar line Martin Gore lays down on top of the synth-dominated grooves on "Personal Jesus." --Beth BessmerCustomer Reviews:
Depeche Mode are pretty damn good.......2007-07-24
Personal Jesus, Enjoy The Silence, and World In My Eyes are essential Depeche Mode tracks, and they are all on the same cd (they have plenty of other great singles, if you are just interested in the singles, get the single collections). Each of them are the catchiest songs on here, but that's not it. Waiting For The Night has a ton of atmosphere (sounds just like the name), and Halo is a lesser known song, but it's still worthy of another great dance song. Sweetest Perfection pales a little bit, and Clean closes off the album in a great way, but it's easily the least essential of the songs. But don't let that fool you, because each song on Violator is a keeper. THe whole cd flows together, and the interludes are cool.
Nearly damn perfect, Depeche Mode will hit you depending on your mood. Recommended for any music fan.
9.5/10
I enjoy it a lot more than silence.......2007-07-20
The album is certainly a point of reference when talking about Depeche Mode; at least three tracks of this album will come to your mind when someone talks about them. The album is very dark but also mature and comfortable, applying techno-dance arrangements never seen in other synthpop albums. It has the perfect moods: complex, delicate, rythmical, agressive, dark, just perfect!. When it comes to the tracks each one of them fits in perfect harmony with the album, like the famous and my personal favorite Enjoy The Silence, which also has a music video that causes impact because of the landscapes, the also famous and controversial Personal Jesus (not related with any satanic aspect), the all time favorite Policy Of Truth (extremely loved by other reviewers as I noticed), the deep, mature and touchy but refreshing tracks World In My Eyes and Waiting For The Night, and the meaningfully comprehensible tracks Sweetest Perfection (in my opinion my least favorite), Blue Dress, Halo and Clean. The tracks' tempo is also slower than past works, maybe with the exception of Enjoy The Silence. The electronical arrengements of each track are very thoughtful and intelligently composed (not like other non sense electronic materials of other bands).
David Gahan's voice is much more trained and heavy as always; Gore and Fletcher musicianship is maybe the best in their careers. Talking about Wilder he did so much unforgetable contributions to this cd to the point of being recognized his extremely talented musical genius.
In conclussion this album is a techno-dance serious and dark work, also easy to comprehend and very accessible, which explodes the best of Depeche Mode in every aspect, my greatest recommendations.
My Favorite DM Album .......2007-06-25
The Absolute Best Album Ever..........2007-06-21
Sweetest Perfection is just that...perfection. Everyone is used to the most perfect-looking man on Earth, Dave Gahan, being the sexy one in DM. But, Martin sings this song so seductively, that upon hearing this song when I first got this cd, I began not only admiring this man for his superb writing, but being absolutely smitten with him. It's dark, obsessive and downright sexy. Waiting For The Night is beautiful and otherworldly, and is sung by both Gahan amd Gore. Hearing their voices together (Dave sings this song softer than he's ever sang on any other song)is absolutely heavenly.
Enjoy The Silence is perfect. The writing, vocals, and production are so far above anything that anyone else has done, it's astounding. I don't care what genre of music you're into, you'll love this song. Blue Dress is gorgeous and moving, but kinky...only Martin Gore can pull off writing and singing a song like this. I literally cried upon hearing this...this song is tied with "Question Of Lust" off of "Black Celebration", as my favorite song. "Clean" is primal, dark and heavy, with a tribal sounding beat. It is the perfect way to close the album, and my god, if you haven't seen this video, PLEASE pull it up on YouTube...all I have to say is Martin, pretty girl, couch. I nearly passed out when I saw it!
Absolutely one of THE BEST!.......2007-05-22

collected.......2007-05-26
What can be said about Depeche Mode? They are definitely a major band. They are the only band from the era to stay popular for 25 years and "be new" constantly. They are the only rivals to REM and U2. Those rare bands that constantly do new albums that are interesting and can play large arenas and not seem like a nostalgia act. This "Best Of" collection may not be for the real Depeche Mode fan. They probably have all these tracks. I just saw them for the first time last year, and was thrilled. They came out of the electronic scene that John Foxx, Gary Numan, and New Order created. I don't think it was until "Everything Counts" that Depeche Mode had broken away from the pack. It has been said that they took their music into a dark place in the last 1980s, and they only got more popular. I find myself being attracted to "Shake The Disease" most of all from the early material. It just sound like the most advanced thing they ever did musical, and vocally. I also like "Precious" a lot. This is a cool collection.

Few filmmakers managed to capture the awkward coming-of-age catastrophes of '80s teens the way John Hughes did, just as few soundtracks encapsulate the sound of an era better than this one does. It's not the best 1986 had to offer, but it's a cohesive whole, transporting the listener to that other time, imagined or otherwise. There's enough variety to ensure that it doesn't become wallpaper, and very little filler. "Left of Center" by Suzanne Vega, with Joe Jackson on piano, is tremendous and transcends generations. Psychedelic Furs frontman Richard Butler has long been bemused about Hughes not taking Molly Ringwald's character's name from the title song, which inspired the film, but everyone was paying too much attention to what Ducky was wearing to notice anyway. --Scott WilsonCustomer Reviews:

EXCELLENT 80'S SOUNDTRACK.......2007-02-02
A must have for fans of the film or anything 80s.......2006-05-10
The soundtrack, much like the film, captures the essence, the spirit of the 80s. What you get here are ten new-wave, alternative and pop songs that helped define the era. Standouts include Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark's "If you leave," The Psychedelic Fur's title track, and the Smiths' "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want," but really the entire soundtrack is great, not a dud among on the CD.
The album is somewhat bittersweet, with the songs being equally morose and celebratory. Much like the film, the songs seem to focus on unrequited love and longing, with a glimmer of hope.
If you are a fan of the film, 80s music and or pop-culture, this CD is well worth adding to your collection.
Much loved music.......2006-04-09
Lovely.......2005-12-16
Now, I wouldn't give up this CD even if you payed me, somehow I feel it's conected to my past.
Finally, a few months ago, I re-watched the movie, and I have to admit, the soundtrack is better. I liked the movie of course, but it was a little too 80's for my taste.

This collection of 16 OMD songs includes all their singles, including "If You Leave" (from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack) and "So in Love." OMD's sound is trademarked mostly by Paul Humphrey and Andy McCluskey's glassy-smooth vocals, along with harmonies that occasionally crack for dramatic emphasis but never shatter. The music is classic early '80s synth-pop, with swelling, hopeful strings and low-key tempos sugar-crusted to keep the songs rich but not totally fluffy. --Beth BessmerAlbum Description
Out of print in the U.S. UK reissue of this 1988 compilation from the Liverpudlian Synthpopsters featuring two tracks not available on the original U.S. pressing: 'Telegraph' and 'Genetic Engineering'. Released at the height of their success, this collection spanned their career up to 1988, beginning with the 1980 single 'Electricity' and ending with 'Dreaming', a track recorded specifically for this collection (and the final track released from the original duo since they split up shortly after this album was released). 18 tracks including 'Messages', 'If You Leave', 'Tesla Girls', 'Enola Gay' plus bonus extended mixes of 'We Love You' and 'La Femme Accident'.
