About the Artist
For the past 15 years Marley's Ghost has been one of the most popular and well loved folk-roots bands on the club, festival, folk radio and community concert scene. Renowned for inspired four part vocal harmonies, often sung a capella, the group is as much English folk roots (Jacob) as Jamaican reggae (Bob), plus gospel, country, R&B, Cajun and even Scottish Bagpipe tunes. The group features former John Denver Band member and Tony nominated Broadway Star Danny Wheetman on guitars, fiddle, bass, banjo, and blues harp; Folk- Legacy, Sierra/Briar and Sage Arts recording artist Jon Wilcox on mandolin, guitar and bouzouki; Ed Littlefield Jr., formerly of the legendary Northwest western swing band Lance Romance, on guitars, dobro, pedal steel guitar and Highland bagpipes; and honey voiced Michael Phalen on guitars, dobro, and fiddle. Infamous for it's irrepressible humor and lively stage presentation, Marley's Ghost has been called "The One-Band Folk Festival."

Very good folk music that grows on you.......2000-03-01

My California cousin gave this to me for Christmas and instructed me to listen to it a few times before passing judgement. The first few times I listended I thought the music was good Indigo Girls type stuff. Then I found myself humming Chances. And thinking about Cosmos. And dancing to I got a Heart. I'm not going to say this will be your favorite CD of all time, but it will be one of your quiet pleasures. (Though I'm imagining the ladies of Rebecca Riots aren't all that quiet in concert) Uplifting, smart and wise, this CD will enrich your life. What more can you ask for for 14 bucks?

Not since the release of Indigo Girls' first album has a CD moved me to the point of compulsive listening. After seeing the Rebecca Riots performance at the Bumpershoot Festival in Seattle, which was uplifting, intimate and entertaining, I have become a fan. These performers know how to write music that tickles the soul.

I first heard Rebecca Riots in 1992 as a freshman in college UCSD. Some guy in my dorm was from the Bay Area and had their first album. For years I carried around a 3rd generation tape of that album, listening to the song Chances whenever I needed cheering up. I was sure I'd never be lucky enough to come across this great little folk band again outside of Berkeley... then their latest album made it onto Amazon! Its an excellent album - wise and witty in beautiful harmony. Plus its live - the way folk music is meant to be. If songs like All There Is and Chances don't make you feel good, nothing will. So, while you've probably never heard of them before, take a chance on this album. You won't regret it. And if you love this album, you can find their first 2 albums out there on the web.

Marley's Ghost Live.......2003-11-24

Great CD. Saw the band at Strawberry Music Festival in 2002. I was very impressed with them. Musically their performace is tight and of the highest caliber and their stage presence is exceptional. Everyone in the band is a great showman--especially frontman Dan Wheetman. It is obivous they all love what they are doing and having a great time on the stage--and it is infectious. Their covers of an eclectic array of hits are more than satisfying--without being carbon copies of the originals. Their original pieces--especially Wheetman's Sugar Trade make you wonder why they aren't famous!

Live makes the music Alive.......2001-06-07

Having been a Marley's Ghost fan for most of their existence, I was thrilled with their newest release. Live at The Freight and Salvage is just that - Live and features the band playing music they love for people who love it. Indeed, these are definitely among my favourite of their tunes. The vocals are unbeatable and the instrumentation is awesome. Marley's Ghost is best when they are live and this CD is the best they've ever made. Their eclectic taste and musical repertoire stands out above all competitors. Especially notable are Iko Iko and Fiddler's Green, both guaranteed to please any crowd.

Album Description

A collection of songs by San Francisco Bay Area bassist/singer/songwriter John Lester recorded live at one of the nations leading folk venues The Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, California. Lester starts the show with his unique bass and vocal solo performances playing both upright bass and fretless electric bass. He is later joined by saxophonist Bob Johnson, percussionist Paulo Baldi, electric bassist Kenon Chen, pianist Nyree, and percusionist Celso Alberty for duets and ensemble pieces that range from folk, to jazz, to world music influences. Two of the songs on this live recording were named "Song of the Year" for The Northern California Songwriter's Association: "The Ways of a Woman" (1999) and "Both a Blessing and a Curse" (2001).
