This compilation is the companion CD to Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster's Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, a book about the history of DJing. The disc's opener, the intro to Handel's "Largo" aria from the opera Xerxes, takes the listener all the way back to 1906. Huh? It turns out that Reginald D. Fessenden, an American engineer, transmitted a recording of the Handel piece via radio that year. Evidently it was the first time a recording was played over the airwaves, arguably making Fessenden the world's first DJ. After that, the comp presents Jamaican reggae, American R&B, hip-hop, disco, house, and left-field items that played various roles in the history of record spinning. "Funky Donkey" is a delightfully loose R&B instrumental by renowned session drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. Tanya Whitley's "Vicious Rap" serves as a great example of the gusto of early hip-hop. The compilers wisely included the transcendent disco classic "Love Is the Message" by MFSB/Salsoul Orchestra. The version that appears here is a Danny Krivit re-edit from the '80s. Its 11 minutes are riveting; rather than being too lengthy, it makes you want to hear eleven more. --Fred Cisterna

A very solid album from the writers of the book of the same name, LNADJSML picks and chooses its genres and representative tracks carefully. The result is a very entertaining album that jumps all over the place, from 60s Motown to reggae, disco and rap - it even closes with a track from Visage!!! (admittedly a very uncharacteristic one) If you're looking for a seamless compilation album this isn't it, but the standard here is generally very high. Dig that MFSB!

both sides are ok, but i prefer the dub.it has a very hard beat to it, and the vox are kept to a minimal - only one phrase! which makes the crowd explode - and then back to the beats. featured on hard house groovy sets of mine dj twister, israel
