Greatest Mixes - a review.......2007-03-12
First released in 1988, it has the effort put forth with some singles that are mixes. I do really like the song "In the name of Love" on here and think it is great. The funky beat of "Love on your side" is okay as well. One of their stronger songs, "Lay your hands on me" is electric and enjoyable.
Singles "Hold me up" and the popular "Doctor Doctor" is also in the mix. For someone wanting a full range of their music however, this is perhaps not the best place to start. I still have enjoyed this album although it is missing a few other gems from their career of songs. I imagine in another couple of years they will come out with a digitally remastered one.
Definitive Proof that The Thompson Twins were never a "Singles" Band!.......2006-04-14
Secondly, there are only 10 tracks here and as the other reviewers have stated, these are not the best remixes of the tracks and so you are not getting value for money.
Thirdly, and most importantly, although the 10 tracks here quite fairly represent the band's best works, this album also quite clearly shows that TT were really more than just a singles band.
You really had to listen to the entire albums to truly appreciate their brilliance. I'm speaking about their earlier albums more so than their later efforts ie. everything up to and including "Here's To Future Days".
However, if you had to sum up the band on one album, their best work is by far "Into the Gap" which has some brilliant tracks that never made it to single status and yet represent some of their best work. "No Peace for the Wicked" is my favourite track of theirs and is quite possibly their best track after "Hold Me Now".
I'd recommending waiting for an mlps digitally remastered version of "Into The Gap" to be released if you want their best work and giving this one a miss. Let's hope it's not going to be a long wait....
One of the biggest disappointments of my youth!.......2005-12-28
"Greatest Mixes" had me worried from the get-go when I saw the ugly metallic cover the record company slapped on it. I noticed the odd-looking track lengths right away while listening to "In the Name of Love 88". I was already coming to terms with the fact that "ITNOL" had been remixed by none other than Shep Pettibone, of whose work I was not the biggest fan. None of the tracks seemed long enough to be the full versions. My fears were confirmed when I heard the butchered edits of my favorite twelve-inch mixes, courtesy of the late Tuta Aquino, Mr. Pettibone's former engineer. I'm not sure, but Tuta might have fallen asleep on the job with this one. Notice during "Doctor! Doctor!" when that spine-tingling three-chord progression that punctuates the song comes in on the wrong bar, crashing into you like a bike messenger who wasn't looking where he was going. "Love On Your Side" is similarly mauled, and we're left to wonder why. The runtime of the finished product was short enough that they could fit TWO bonus tracks on the CD. So why edit the twelve inch mixes in the first place? The whole purpose of the remixes in the first place is to expand the tracks to allow for extended builds and ebbs, so the intentions of Arista Records in editing these back down here remain a mystery to me.
Fortunately for whiny purists like myself, the CD bonus tracks are the unedited remixes for "The Gap" and "You Take Me Up", plus there's an otherwise unreleased 12" mix of "King For A Day" on here. That fact alone makes "Greatest Mixes" essential for collectors, although I don't know why the compilations and "remastered deluxe editions" of Thompson Twins albums that keep coming out seem to be helmed by people who have no intentions of doing right by the fan base. It's like the Human League's revenge or something.

especially 'Body Music". In this song you hear all the stuff that todays dj's are using. But call it 'Forgotten Dance Classics". 'Strike it up" was a floorfiller in the early 80's. I'm hungry for this beautifull funk, hungry for more.

For every "bad" choice there is a good choice.......2005-02-18
However, each bad choice is balanced out by a good choice. By 1989, 12" singles were being issued with numerous remixes (and always the obligatory house mix), so there were several different versions of "What You Don't Know" and "Tell Me Why" that Thump/Arista could have put on here; thankfully they chose the house mixes, which are excellent. These two mixes alone are worth the price of the CD. I also wasn't thrilled to get the "Suave" mix of "When I Looked at Him," as this is available on the "What You Don't Know" album (as a bonus track). On the other hand, it was a good choice to include the extended version of "Seasons Change"- it is a good example of one of the late 1980's ballads released as a 12-inch (other examples include Debbie Gibson's "Foolish Beat" and Madonna's "Live to Tell").
As for the rest of the album, they are your typical 80's extended versions, which is fine by me! The inclusion of the extended version of "Exposed to Love" is especially of value here, it's not one of the easier 12-inches to find.
I recommend this album as a good collection of the dance music Expose put out. For the casual fan, "Greatest Hits" is a better buy- but for the true Expose fan, this is a must-have. While there may be some omissions and tracks that are available elsewhere, these problems are definitely outweighed by the great mixes here. This album shows that Expose was able to put out good dance music in the late 1980s and early 1990s, be it freestyle or house.

Timeless Classics for all generations of Hip-Hop........2000-05-29
This is required listening for any Hip-Hop fan no collection is complete without it.
Before the likes of 2Pac, DMX, and Snoop Dog, just to name a few of todays great musical and lyrical commentators on today's issues and injustices there was Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five(nevermind The Sugarhill Gang, as well as Kurtis Blow). It was these who have been instrumental in Hip-Hop's growth into what it is today. Songs like The Message, The Message II, and White Lines that continue to live today with the same vitality today as they did in their day.
I really love how Cutfather has downshifted White Lines from it's original dance tempo into a Hip-Hop setting. This has never been done before even though this song has been complimented with many remixes since it's incarnation and the song is very much at home in it's new musical interpre-tation--even more so than in a dance tempo. Now lets not forget that this song was originaly "dancy", and David Ospina shows this song love and respect by keeping it's original elements in mind as he takes the song to todays dancefloors. The Message also is "at home" in it's new musical interpretations. This cd also includes "The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel", a mega-mix of Grandmaster songs blended to perfection and interwoven with Blondie's "Rapture", Chic's "Goodtimes" and Queen's classic: "Another one Bites The Dust".
Also included are some previously unreleased recordings. Like any Rock n' Rock fans worth their salt will know about and rever Jimi Hendrix, no Hip-Hop fan should be ignorant of the great works such as this nor the Hip-Hop sirens of yesteryear who laid the foundation of this enduring and vibrant genre.
