Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Air meets Hall & Oates meets Goldfrapp.......2006-04-19

A combination of the sound of Air (or Zero 7, if you prefer), Hall & Oates and the current Goldfrapp. That is the best way I can describe the music from this self titled album by the England-based trio Zoot Woman. Among the tracks, "Taken It All" stands above the rest, with "Useless Anyway" as a close second. The rest of the album, being a production with touches of chillout here and there (something we are all a bit tired of by now), continues to packs a surprisingly fun musical punch more than three years after its original release.

4 out of 5 stars Coming to America.......2004-11-10

Hope this is not hype, but Zoot Womans most recent album will finally be released domestically. Neither the U.K. or America have been able to really enjoy this bands great sounds. Each album seems to grow and mature without becoming predictable. Grey Day, the lead song on the domestic release, will surely become a College favorite. Probably the best alt-rock band out of France in recent memory.

3 out of 5 stars living in a magazine is waaaaayy better.......2004-08-08

this album isnt bad, just not as wonderful as their first album.

5 out of 5 stars ZOOT WOMAN aka JACQUES LU CONT aka LRD aka PAPER FACES!!!.......2004-04-17

First things first: STUART PRICE aka ZOOT WOMAN aka LES RHYTHMES DIGITALES aka PAPER FACES is a GENIUS! Second: WHY OH WOW isn't this CD (as well as their last one LIVING IN A MAGAZINE) released in America?? Zoot Woman's leader was the musical director of Madonna's last tour, why couldn't she have the vision to release it domestic on Maverick/WB? For sheet quality in both production and songwriting craft, this could be the best "dance" album of the last few years...or rock...or pop...or, you get the idea. It's a real shame that more people in the U.S. don't know about ZOOT WOMAN - at least for now it can be our little secret!! :)

4 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2004-04-09

I heard 'Grey Day' for the first time on an online radio and was immediately hooked. Having bought this album I was not disappointed. I am not usually a fan of eighties synth style music, but the combination of upbeat tracks and some more soulful tunes reminded me of French albums like Phoenix's 'United', and Etienne de Crecy's 'Tempovision', both of which I would strongly advise if you haven't already checked them out. If you are interested in the Wall of Sound label then have a look at Roykspopp and Black Twang.

Some of the tracks on this are weaker than others, and the first four or five on the album are the strongest (hence four rather than 5 stars), but it does work well overall. If you like it, then have a look at their first album, 'Living in a Magazine' particularly the title track and the first one, both of which have very cool videos (check out french tv) and really define this band for me. It's not always good to compare albums, and the differences between the styles of music may reflect maturity. I think the tracks on this album do have a more distinct and strong style than its predecessor. Nevertheless I prefer that album, hence the comparsion! "I've got a feeling, it's automatic!"

      Album Description

Englishman Stuart Price, who worked his magic with electronica/house project Les Rhythmes Digitales, has recruited two brothers, Adam & Johnny Blake, to create an outlet for his more straight forward pop ambitions. The somewhat twisted name of the band, Zoot Woman, is not the only unexpected element in this constellation though. 'Living in a Magazine' is a vivid work, with roots in classic eighties synthpop, new wave & the more introvert soundscapes typical for Les Rhythmes Digitales. EMI. 2004.

4 out of 5 stars definitely good little gem here.......2005-09-30

ok so zoot woman rules. they are kind of like electro hall and oats. it's VERY 80s, and has a kind of soft-rock feel to it, but in the best possible way. hell, they even cover kraftwerk's "the model" and make it sound kind of like mister mister or something. i don't know what i'm talking about, just buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Find, Totally Unexpected!.......2005-09-29

I purchased this CD from Amazon after having heard "Nobody Knows" on a different compilation CD. This is one of those CDs you listen to after a difficult day at work. Their sound is very lush. The music is rich with vintage synth and electric piano sounds. The songs themselves are pop all the way, but not too contrived or trivial to endure multiple listenings. The music and singing remind me of Gary Wright (Dream Weaver) from the 70s. I played this CD 4 times in a row when I first got it. My favorite tracks: It's Automatic, Nobody Knows, Jesse, and Holiday Home.

5 out of 5 stars truly classic. .......2004-12-02

this album is absolutely amazing, worth the price. it's like a radically updated duran duran, with incredibly slick, savvy production in the vein of moroder or alan braxe and fred falke. buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Oh you know you could be Beautiful . . . .......2004-08-30

Definately better than the 2nd depression self-titled album. The hooks are catchy and the music is actually what I would call deeper than usual underground pop.

The keyboards and retro sound are fitted with inspired lyrics all fitting together on a theme of a ravenous (somewhat ridiculous world) filled with marketing, commercialization, and lack of human touch.

Believe me, this album is what I would title the "Hopeful" album and the other I would title the "Hopeless" album. I'm waiting for the 3rd release which will hopefully make it to these shores.

5 out of 5 stars hot stuff, man.......2004-03-21

I guess I'm a little behind, cus I just discovered this. I have been a long time fan of Les Rythmes and I wanted to find more of Stuart Price's work. Come to find out he's got these groups Phoenix and Zoot Woman, and the music is great. And THEN, I hear the music all over, such as in the movie Lost in Translation (Phoenix - Too Young). I don't care if this album came out a couple years ago. It feels superfresh and it's worth the price. U can play this in your Volksvagen for your hipster buddies, and you'll be the Dude.
