5 out of 5 stars How is Giorgio Moroder, too?.......2007-03-08

This is an electronic pop band, a debut album of a yellow magic orchestra. In 1978, there were few musicians who made music with computer control in the world . YMO introduced a computer for music that was still released for a recording process in those days into boldness and created such masterpieces. However, though YMO makes music, a true reason does not say instead because it merely lacked hands, and the reason is because YMO is opposed to the strong sense of rhythm that a black musician has in what it does not possibly match, and it was going to use power of a machine. As a result, it may be said that it is irony of the history that music of YMO had a great influence on black music of the present age. This record made use of an echo by re-mixture by Al Schmitt; is easy to hear it; is finished, but this is not the thing which aimed at of YMO.

Great music. I am just happy that it came in the cd format because I wore out the original vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely required listening!!!!.......2006-10-16

Genius of composition, execution, and vision still stands the test of time. It's probably one of the most influental electronic disco records of all time. I bought it back in 1978, and it still gets played. Every DJ should know this record.

5 out of 5 stars Great 70's album.......2006-08-23

The starting point of the YMO's brilliant success. Although this is a synthpop album including the sound of computer games anywhere, you can feel the flavour of the oriental music. Firecracker, Cosmic surfin, Tong Poo, and La Femme Chinoise are quite nice. In 2001, Firecracker was sampled by "I'm real" included in the album "J LO" by Jennifer Lopez although Maria Carry originally supposed to sample it.

5 out of 5 stars YMO re-united for the Earth Live in Japan!.......2007-06-24

This is Yellow Magic Orchestra's 2nd and probably most famous album. The first vinyl version came out in 1979, and YMO was awarded the annual grand prize for the best album of the year in Japan (1979) when the rest of the world didn't know much about computer electric pop music, something YMO called 'Techno Pop'. Germany's Kraftwerk was one of only a few other groups of this kind.
This album contains famous pieces, including 'Technopolis', which starts with a computerised voice saying 'TOKIO', written by Ryuichi SAKAMOTO ('The Last Emperor', 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence'); 'Absolute Ego Dance' (by Harry HOSONO); and probably the most famous YMO number 'Rydeen' (by Yukihiro TAKAHASHI). I personally love the YMO version of the Beatles 'Day Tripper' and the main theme 'Solid State Survivor (SSS)', in which the guitarist of Sheena & the Rokkets, Makoto AYUKAWA, takes part. By the way, SSS contains some strange electric 'coughs' and 'laughter', and a Japanese expression 'Moshi Moshi? (Hello Hello?)' can also be heard a few times. 'Rydeen' contains some 'horse running' noises too. The sound of synthesizers (especially 'Prophet 5'), synthe-drums and the futuristic melody are all amazing! But the most amazing thing is that this album was released in 1979! YMO came to the USA & Europe in 1979, even before they became famous in their home country of Japan.

FYI: YMO was re-united for one night only for the Earth Live event from Kyoto(07/07/07). They were the last group to appear on stage in Japan and played a few pieces including the legendary 'Rydeen' with a new interpretation, which you can see on YouTube.

5 out of 5 stars From the golden age of analog synthesis -- don't miss it.......2007-04-09

Many of the cuts on this CD were originally released on a vinyl record called "X Multiplies", with replicated mannequins of Sakamoto, Hosono, and Takahashi on the cover, staring at the camera. It was one of the coolest covers ever! It kinda makes you miss the days when cover art was, to a large extent, what sold music. Solid State Survivor was released later.

There are many wonderful cuts on this essential YMO CD, among them "Behind The Mask", with it's incredibly tight vocoder vocal and percussion section. It's one of my three favorite songs of all time -- I am a pro musician myself with a very broad musical perspective, and I'm telling you, I never tire of "Behind The Mask". Technopoly is pretty cool too. Nearly all the tracks are excellent, but Behind The Mask remains a classic for all time.

I can't strongly enough recommend YMO's other albums, as well. It's techno rock and it doesn't get any cleaner or tighter than this.

5 out of 5 stars Great synthpop album.......2006-09-23

YMO is one of the pioneers of the synthpop as well as Kraftwerk and Devo. "Solid State Survivor" is considered to be the most famous album of them. Although it was released almost 25 yeas ago, you will never feel it old-fashoned. There is a story related to this album. Although Michael Jackson offered YMO to cover "Behind the Mask", YMO refused. Later, YMO regretted because it would be included in "Thriller" the mega hit album. In 1986, "Behind the Mask" was covered by Eric Clapton with Michael Jackson's lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars Important album.......2006-08-06

While as usual not everything is first rate, and also some of this album has aged quite a bit, it is one of the better and more essential YMO albums. They were quite innoveative at the time and should not be forgotten for what they were: one of the most innovative early synth groups that were working in the tradition of Kraftwerk.

5 out of 5 stars Yes!.......2006-06-18

Lighten up.
Ignore the sad clown at the top. Judging music based on the production technology used at the time of it's recording is an obvious sign of ignorance and one of the pitfalls of dealing with many electronic music fans ($$$$) in general. For those of us who understand context and know how to have a good time, this album is a gem. The sound of the production on this album gives it a timelessness and the overall character of this group, specifically this album, is wonderfully idiosyncratic and just can't be replicated. There are a few filler tracks, sure. Maybe two at the most. If that bothers you, you probably need to be reminded that this is YMO and not Stockhausen. If you're looking for a landmark synthpop album... BUY IT. If you like it, give Naughty Boys a chance. It sounds a lot different, but it's a welcomed runner up.

5 out of 5 stars YMO Re-united for the Earth Live in Japan!.......2007-06-24

To mark its 25th anniversary since the emergence of YMO, this new best album was released with two discs. Although there have already been a number of 'YMO Bests' and 'YMO Remixes', one of the main differences between 'UC YMO' and previously published best albums is that Ryuichi SAKAMOTO (The Last Emperor; Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence) himself is supervising the album and in charge of the selection of the tracks. Although it is all in Japanese, Sakamoto also gives intriguing commentary on each piece. The re-mastered and improved sound quality is another element that makes this best album worth having, and this also includes very rare material (TV commercial version, 7-inch single version etc.) which has never been published before. This is a Japanese import, and therefore slightly costly, but (1) Sakamoto's supervision, (2) his commentary on every track, (3) the much improved sound quality and (4) the rare material would, I believe, be reasons enough for any YMO fan to consider getting hold of this 'Ultimate Collection'!!

FYI: YMO was re-united for one night only for the Earth Live event from Japan (07/07/07). They were the last group to appear on stage in Japan and played the legendary 'Rydeen' with a new interpretation, which you can see on YouTube.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic CD .......2007-03-19

First let me say that this is NOT a live cd like the review said. This is one of my all time favorite albums and the best from YMO. They of course were influenced by the Fathers of techno, Kraftwerk, yet have an original sound with a hint of Asian (Japanese)flavor. So many bands were touched by them and still copy their work through dubbing today. So great to hear it today even though it is 25 years plus old. Buy it. Listen and love something unique.

5 out of 5 stars early sampling genius.......2005-07-20

This beautifully composed suite of songs is YMO's best; a solid set of compositions, mostly in a pop song format, using the early sampler technology of the Emulator. These songs transcend the sounds and rhythms of their day (1981). It's a groundbreaking electronic album that has, in my opinion yet to be matched in production quality and feel, even with today's huge variety of techno music. The translated lyrics are odd and beautiful poetry to start with, but also have the magical charm of Engrish. The musical sounds and lyrics combine to create a totally unique sonic world. The two instrumentals at the end use industrial sounds to great effect. A great pedagogical tool for composers and a real rare gem for lover's of the difficult to describe.

1 out of 5 stars Stick with the originals........2004-11-30

The main reason I checked this out, besides that it was more material from the incomparable Y.M.O., was that is had some Orb remixes of Tong Poo. I'm sad to say that Dr. Alex Patterson's remixes sound so completely different from the originals that they may as well be credited to him alone. The only bright spot to the collection are the two remixes of Firecracker which stick close to the original melody and add updated beats, which by now sound dated anyway. But hey, if you want to hear Y.M.O. mixed up with passe house beats from the 90's then by all means, seek this crap out.

5 out of 5 stars Remixes added 90's edge to YMO.......1999-05-25

These remixes add not only a 90's feel to many YMO favorites, but add the flair and style of the many contributors. Especially enjoyable are the remixes by 808 state, which keep an overall chord structure from "Light in the Darkness" but embellish the song to a point where it is barely recognizable.

YMO helped pioneer the Techno music revolution, along with Kraftwerk. The artists on this remix album are the children, brothers, and sisters of the movement. Thoroughly enjoyable, and hard to get tired of.

    5 out of 5 stars More of a "happening" than a concert!.......2007-02-13

The collective sound of 10,000 Japanese teenage girls going utterly gonzo at the same time over a very sophisticated band with four keyboard players, a drummer and no guitars!

In Western countries like Australia, Yellow Magic Orchestra were regarded as a rather specialised, sophisticated AND highly influential "Art-house" Pop band. People who like YMO were usually the chardonnay set in Australia - serious young men in their twenties who dressed like David Bowie and had girlfriends with Louise "Lulu" Brookes hairstyles, green & white polka-dot dresses and matt red lipstick (i.e. Art Tarts).

No so in Japan, Sakamoto, Hosono and Takahashi were absolute pop stars there and they were the idols of millions of Japanese teenagers.

After Service contains some very fine performances of some of YMO's best material and the sound of the fans, in apparent ecstasy, adds something to this recording, IMHO.

As I said, more of a "happening" or an "act of worship" than a concert.

    4 out of 5 stars Great recording.......1999-04-03

Terific concert recording for any band. My original Japan vinyl pressing is typical of the high quality record pressing from Japan in the eighties. The Japanese attention to detail (exemplified by YMO itself) is missed today.

5 out of 5 stars 1983 concert as superb YMO recording.......1998-09-21

This CD was recorded at the Nippon Budokan in 1983, and is very typical of the Japanese early Electronica music genre. Most of YMO's hits that they debuted with or were famous for are represented on this album, with new instruments and key-changes that offer an enhanced "YMO on Steroids" feeling. This reviewer highly reccommends the album.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite YMO album.......2007-02-13

I can't remember when I bought this album. It must have been some time in the early 1980s. I was listening to the music of John Foxx, Japan, Ippu-Do, Bill Nelson, David Sylvian, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, Harold Budd, Fad Gadget, S.P.K., Sandii & The Sunsetz, Cabaret Voltaire, Kraftwerk and Deutsche Amerikanische Freundschaft at the time. Yellow Magic Orchestra were unique, and they are, still.

BGM is not really an album of songs, it is really an album of instrumental pieces and "soundscapes", partly instrumental and some with vocals, and some with fragments of singing and spoken words. The music is all quite atmospheric and rich in instrumental lines and textures. Some of the pieces could be easily arranged for and played by an orchestra. "Mass" and "U.T." sound like orchestral music over a drum machine. There is some acoustic drumming here from Yukihiro Takahashi (a very fine drummer) and, possibly, Ryuichi Sakamoto (he drums in the video clip of "Cue"). The keyboard playing is, of course, sublime and it is clear that the three members of the group let their imagines run free on this album. They were superstars by this stage and they could more or less do whatever they liked .... and they certainly did!

I loved to contrast the music of D.A.F. with Y.M.O. - DAF were the quintessential "Minimalist" Punk band - one keyboard line and drums; YMO could have been described as "Maximalist", in comparison, with their multi-layered and contrapuntal music. Like Kraftwerk and Cabaret Voltaire, YMO didn't always rely on words and lyrics alone to carry the meaning of their songs, the sounds, instrumental timbres, harmonies, melodies, rhythmic contures and song structures provided their music with internal rhetoric.

BGM, overall, is a "moody" and atmospheric album. I have recently seen some of the songs performed live on YouTube (I never saw any promotional videos at the time!) and I am [still!] impressed with the intensity and power of YMO live. In some ways, all the music on this album would have sounded even better live, I'd be willing to wager! Alas, YMO never toured Australia.

BGM is quite unlike anything else Yellow Magic Orchestra recorded and it is very unlike anything else anyone else recorded before or since. Hmmm, okay, maybe "Radio Fantasy" by Ippu-Do owes something to this album - "Magic Vox" and "Radio Japan" could easily be played back-to-back with any of the tracks from BGM and not cause the listener to flinch.

It is a pity "Radio Fantasy" is not readily available on CD.

However, If you want to get an insight into YMO - check out the video of "Cue" (one of the their best songs) on YouTube. Stunning!

4 out of 5 stars Catchy, Futuristic, Funky & Smart.......2006-09-18

Great to see YMO's stuff out on CD - I had this (and a pair of their other releases) on vinyl when I was in middle school, and after many years, it's still great stuff. YMO stood alongside some of the Krautrock groups (especially Kraftwerk and Can) as something way ahead of their time, and Ryuichi Sakamoto has crafted an extremely fascinating solo career over the last 2 decades.

In any case, the shimmering electro-pop here was immaculate - catchy, futuristic, funky and smart.

    Check 'em out.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it in 1981, love it now.......2005-07-22

A friend from Japan introduced me to YMO back in 1981 with a recording of 'Nice Ace' off the Multiplies album. I was hooked. I traveled to Japan that year and picked up BGM while I was there. Man, that synth solo in "1,000 Knives" is insane. I had some friends that used it to breakdance to back in the early 80s. The other tracks I love are "Cue", "Ballet", "Camouflage" and "Happy End". I used part of "Loom" along with a bit from Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" album (a non-song part between "Jig of Life" and "Hello Earth") to make a cool phone machine message.

Anyway, YMO was good at the type of music they produced (synthpop). I highly recommend BGM, Multiplies, and the others, along with Yukihiro Takahashi's solo works Murdered by the Music and Neuromantic.
