Vinicius

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Though he uses the luscious framework of traditional bossa nova--steamy rhythms, bittersweet melodies, and soft singing--Brazilian star Vinicius Cantuaria is more subversive than slavish. As on his previous stateside releases, 49-year-old Cantuaria draws upon the modern language of sampling, sound effects, and the mood of dark soundtracks to imbue his forlorn, deeply blue acoustic bossa with an otherworldly quality. A former drummer with Caetano Veloso, Cantuaria seems to enjoy slow-motion fission. His songs float and drift, suspended in space by the slightest effort of his liquid voice and gentle acoustic guitar strumming. Electric guitarists Marc Ribot and Bill Frisell add resonant shades of red and hot pink to the simmering mix, as in the beautiful, hazy version of Jobim's "Ela e Carioca." Also onboard are bassist Marc Johnson, drummers Paulo Braga and Joey Baron, pianist Brad Mehldau, and vocalist Veloso.

"Agua Rasa" is one of the album's many glimmering moments, a soft, undulating melody underlying a tale that sounds utterly familiar and intimate, even if it's in Portuguese. "Ordinaria" uses a street samba groove and the sound of clinking bottles, muted trumpet, and low bass for a kind of desolate, sun-scorched Brazilian epic poem. Cantuaria's guitar unfurls poignantly here as a trumpet cries over rolling brush strokes. It's romantic, yet somehow tragic. "Rio," with David Byrne, is street-smart and sassy, rumbling with frame drum and eerie samples. "Nova de Sete" recalls Jobim, a lovely, fragile song supported by a lonely, lost vocal and Bill Frisell's haunting guitar tones. --Ken Micallef

It's not a bad quality CD but the music is variable and different. Even though I like most types of music, I think the composition is just average.

5 out of 5 stars A world rhapsody.......2006-12-28

This is suberbly enhanced performance CD that captures Yo-Yo Ma and friends at their musical heights. The accompanying musicians, the Assasds, Paquito you-know-who, Kathyrn Stott and others add beautiful textures to the compositions of Piazzolla and Jobim to create a Latin influenced classical painting. This is music to play, go about your business at home and enjoy the different influences coming together. The sadness and happiness blend to reveal the emotions of life. Favorite songs include D'Rivera's "Afro" that sneaks up on you like breaking dawn to reveal the sunshine and life anew. Also Piazzolla's "Tango Suite" is a frenzied Yo-Yo Ma performance with suttle breaks on cello giving way to the Assadd's beautiful quite work on guitars to spike and peak your interest numerous times. This is good background music but it grabs your attention and makes you listen carefully so it can turn on you and be very demanding. Good for those quite times of work or reading.

5 out of 5 stars All that a performance can be........2006-02-11

Keep in mind that The studio version of this performance is nothing short of brilliant. The material includes pieces from the likes of Astor Piazzolla, Jobim and Paquito D'Rivera. Then you come to discover that there is a live concert version (and Dvd) of the disc. There is nothing like having your cake and your ice cream in the same bowl. Well that is what the release of this disc is, Cake and Ice cream with the cherry on the top.

Peace:

3 out of 5 stars Good music, engineering could be better.......2005-05-05

I bought the disk after hearing about the colaboration on NPR. The songs and performances are impecable, the variety is satisfying and fun. My only complaint is that the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired. Several times the recording level is not balanced between the instruments so that when listening to YoYo Ma playing, when joined by the saxaphone, it comes in too loud and ruins the mood.

I almost always prefer the live perfomances when the energy of the audience carries over to the performers. This is one case when I wish I had gotten the studio version.

5 out of 5 stars a classical-Latin music blend.......2005-04-22

Yo Yo Ma and his fellow musicians make beautiful music in this mellow adaptation of melodies that have their origin in Latin America.
The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of assorted and marvelous musicians toured the world with this music, and there is a cohesion between the performers and the material they are playing that is evident, and a pleasure to hear. One hears the applause, but it is not obtrusive, and the sound is excellent for a live recording.

Very impressive is the clarinet of 6 time Grammy Award winner and composer Paquito D'Rivera, who wrote 3 of the tracks, and shows his virtuosity and Cuban soul in 7 pieces, and I especially like his "Merengue".
Rosa Passos sings and plays guitar on 4 tracks, and has a soft, clear, and pleasing voice, and 3 of the songs she interprets so well are by her fellow countryman and Brazilian bossa nova artist Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Other musicians are Sergio and Odair Assad on guitars, Kathryn Scott on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Cyro Baptista on percussion. Yo Yo Ma is of course the household name among them, and is masterful in his interpretations throughout; I especially like him in D'Rivera's "Afro", a fascinating piece with some experimental sounds.
Other favorites for me are D'Rivera's "Wapango", and "Cristal" (Camargo Mariano), a rhythmic duet between Ma and Scott that is terrific.
This CD has the feel of a classical chamber concert, with the warmth of melodious Latin compositions, and is a nice and unique musical treat.
The foldout insert has liner notes by D'Rivera, recording info, and mini bios of Ma's 7 fellow musicians; total playing time is 72'07.

This package contains a bonus DVD, that includes 3 videos:
1. Piazzolla's "Libertango", from the original soundtrack of Sally Potter's film "The Tango Lesson", with clips of the great tango dancer Pablo Veron.
2. "Brasileirinho", by Waldir Azevedo, featuring Paquito D'Rivera, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
3. Jobim's "Chega de Saudage" interpreted by Rosa Passos, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
It also includes a very short interview with Yo Yo Ma.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable and gorgeous.......2007-03-24

A celebratory triumph of a poet, songwriter, and performer who embodied a love of life, good company, melody, and the beauty of women and words. Bethania's voice is as remarkable as Vinicius's twin talents for poetry and the pleasures of love. This album somehow manages to out-ballad her great career of balladeering, AND have more energy and pleasure in the "up" sambas as well. Superb and varied arrangement throughout, among the best in modern MPB.

I could listen to Mulher, Sempre Mulher and Tarde em Itapua all afternoon. Actually, I have!

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful homage........2006-11-14

One of Brazil's greatest voices tackles the back catalogue of one of its greatest songwriters.

Maria Bethânia has carved out a distinctive place for herself amongst the pantheon of Brazilian greats of the last half century.
Her love for the dramatic, the theatrical and the unashamedly romantic has earned her a place in the hearts of a devoted fan-base and today, 40 years after her debut show in Rio set her on the path to stardom, she is still one of the biggest names in Brazilian music.

It is also 40 years since she first met the legendary poet, lyricist and co-founder of the bossa nova movement Vinícius de Moraes, an early supporter with whom she went on to forge an enduring friendship.
To celebrate this double anniversary, Bethânia has produced "Que Falta Você Me Faz" ( this is the original title of the album), a homage to Vinícius that draws on material from across his luminous career, including his near-mythical collaborations with Tom Jobim and Baden Powell.

Typically, Bethânia has sought out material with a dramatic edge. Her selections range from the smooth, confident samba of `Lamento no Morro' to the introspective `O Astronauta'. Her smoky, controlled delivery is complemented perfectly by an expansive musical setting based around sensitive arrangements of piano, guitar and percussion. Unfortunately, the glossy, overwrought strings that Bethânia too often relies upon to provide the emotional punch are also present on many of the tracks, needlessly distracting from the otherwise subtle performances.

"Que Falta..." is at its best on songs such as "Modinha" and the closing "Nature Boy" (with brother Caetano Veloso) when the backing is kept simple, allowing the quality of the songwriting and Bethânia's remarkable voice to shine.
At moments of undeniable beauty such as these, the set borders on perfection.

Those who love the quiet jazzy groove of bossa nova and the delicate voice of Caetano Veloso probably know about Vinicius Cantuária. A Brazilian songwriter who has written hits for Veloso and other countrymen, Cantuária's own music favors spare but by no means safe bossa nova-based arrangements that gently push at the music's edges without making a stink about it. Like the classics, nothing is rushed; there is no shouting. Here there is the whispered voice, gentle percussion, swingin' guitar, bass and a few other bits of sound filigree that float in and out. While recent efforts have an arty electronic sheen on the surface, Horse and Fish is almost all acoustic, the notable exception being Cantuária's airy Bill Frisell-like electric guitar tone on some material. Highlights include the gutsy remake of Gilberto Gil's "Procissao," the upbeat "Cubanos Postizos" and "Look The Sky." This one will creep inside you with the subtlety of osmosis. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Another off-center set by this Brazilian experimentalist.......2004-06-28

Another lowkey, jazz-tinged outing by this well-regarded Brazilian expatriate... Cantuaria has come a long way since his days as a percussionist in Caetano Veloso's late '70s band, and from his clunky early solo albums, where he tried to be a New Wave-y Brazilian answer to The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Here he settles deep into a mellow world-jazz mode, as heavily influenced by his recent collaborations with guitarist Bill Frisell as by the hovering, angelic spectre of the late Miles Davis. Longtime collaborator Paulo Braga anchors the album's percussive end, with Mauro Refosco and other folks in the Rio-by-way-of-NYC axis. Most of the songs are Cantuaria originals, while some well-chosen cover tunes -- moody renditions of Roberto Menescal's "O Barquinho," Gilberto Gil's "Procissao," a couple by Jobim -- highlight Cantuaria's ability to reimagine and refashion the visions of other artists. This is an album that will grow on you: songs that at first may seem slick and overly informed by commercial jazz styling take on a subtle gravity, as his profoundly calm, quiet approach slowly asserts itself. Give this disc a couple of tries, and it will richly reward you.

    5 out of 5 stars lovely.......2005-09-14

This complilation of songs flows beautifully. I have been trying to find several of them in one CD especially "Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar" and "Samba Em Preludio". Lirics, voices and arrengements were carefully put together to bring us an amazing period of Brazilian music. Not being a critic in the matter I just think that this CD is as lovely as a fragant bouquet of flowers, warm and enriched with Maria Creuza's voice and Toquinho's guitar. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars A suberb piece of music, a must for music lovers.......2005-01-05

A jewel from a time that has gone and will not return. How do we replace those brilliant musicians such as Vinicius, Joao Gilberto and A. C. Jobim? We can't, so a record like this is a must for all who love brazilian samba and bossa nova. Even the young Maria Creuza vocals shine through the tracks. I followed her further career with attention, but she never got even close to this performance, maturity seemed to sink her into a much more commercial mood of performing.
If you want a classic, follow my advice and buy tis CD.You won't regret.

    5 out of 5 stars excelente.......2001-05-24

    5 out of 5 stars A truely historic recording.......2000-11-29

The first among many Toquinho - Vinícius albums brings some of the greatest Vinícius songs through his new collaboration with guitarist and singer Toquinho. According to liner notes written by Vinícius himself, he became acquainted with Toquinho in Buenos Aries club called La Fusa, where the latter performed samba and bossa nova with female singer Maria Creuza. The encounter resulted with this beautiful and historic recording, full of great bossa nova standards like Jobim's A Felicidade, Lamento no Morro, Garota de Ipanema, Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar and Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você, Baden Powell's Berimbao, Consolação and marvellous version of Samba em Preludio, as well as some less known but equally beautiful songs like Carlos Lyra's Minha Namorada, Caetano Veloso's Irene, Toqunho - Jorge Ben's Que Maravilha and Vinicíus' Tomara. Arrangements consist of Toquinho's guitar, bass and percussion and excellent vocal arrangements of three of lead performers Vinícius, Toquinho and Maria Creuza. This album is a must for any bossa nova collector, but at the same time a great introductory album for all those that are not yet initiated.

Antonio Carlos Jobim is remembered as one Brazil's greatest composers. He spearheaded the creation of bossa nova nearly a half century ago; he was also a musician whose talents extended far beyond that of a composer. His training was in classical music and he'd been involved with large-scale orchestral collaborations for his work over the years. This posthumous effort, recorded live in 2002, highlights many of those large-scale works, offering lush arrangements by the maestro himself, Claus Ogerman, and Nelson Riddle, as well as new charts by son Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet. In addition to classical arrangements of such classics as "A Felicidade" and "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Impanema"), previously unreleased pieces "Preludio" and "Lenda" make their debut on this double-disc collection. This large canvas of sound deftly illustrates the beauty of Jobim's melodies, but the composer's majestic sense of harmony is really highlighted, thus offering up the biggest revelation of the project. This is the best re-imagination of the composer's work since Morelenbaum/Sakamoto's Casa. --Tad Hendrickson

Jobim loves people, and gets excited about all kinds of things, I'm sure there's certain pieces by Debussy and Ravel that made Jobim red in the face because they are so beautiful.

How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still a make a work of art their own?

      Love and desire.

Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.

Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music.

Jobim went on record, Music is frozen Architecture!

      Thanks, Tom!

Historians say the height of Civilisation is the drawing in and taking out of water, music is like water, it comes in waves, when I listen to Symphonic Jobim all the public works are in place and working smoothly.

I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're a little before my time, Symphonic Jobim puts life's panorama in perspective for me.

I don't have to be near a pretty picture window to drink in the scenery when I listen to Symphonic Jobim, the beautiful motifs conjure all kinds of pictures and feelings.

Every recording becomes a by product of the time period it was made, but Symphonic Jobim has a certain timelessness attached to it... it is a perfect piece of music beginning to end!

Symphonic Jobim, a Project by Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, does much credit to it's Composer. Good Job!

La Fusa was a "cafe concert" (night club) located in Mar del Plata, Argentina in the late sixties, and later moving to Punta del Este, Uruguay. The two cities were, and are, the playground of the Argentine high class (and increasingly middle class as well). Vinicius brought his great Brazilian musicians to demonstrate the wonderfullness of bossa nova to appreciating crowds. There are two recordings, this one made I believe in Mar del Plata, and another one (referred to above) made in Punta del este with Maria Creuza, which is also wonderful. The live history of bossa nova.

Beautifully arranged and played.Listen carefully to No.2 and enjoy the "setting up" of the samba mood that follow by Toquinho's guitar.Makes you wonder why did we miss this alive performance...if you do not understand portuguez listen to the piano in the background and the little sayings of Toquinho's guitar and sooon you will say with every body...Sarava!.
If you want more of this ; look for the recording with Maria Creuza and you will have all the beauty of this two performers from Bahia
