Remember Studio 54?.......2007-07-22
Boy, if this doesn't bring back old times...nothing will. Great sound, quite unique for their day.
Some Good Nostalia.......2007-04-21
So many people scoff at Disco Music of the 70's (an anti-Christ of sorts to Rock music lovers) that it takes guts to admit that there were actually very decent singers, groups and composers around those days. The French Group Voyage comes to mind as one good example. Not that every song I hear on this CD is a gem, of course. But I still can't help enjoying the unpretentious upbeat quality of their catchier songs such as "Let's Fly Away" (I suspect that particular song has some suspicious parallels to Berlin's "There's No Business Like Show Business"), "Tahiti" and "Souvenirs". These songs are not only catchy, but sometimes carry complex and even daring harmonies. Granted, this CD brings back a lot of good memories. But since I studied music, I believe I can be fairly objective in saying that Voyage had some good stuff to offer.
Disco Beat, of course, BUT...........2005-03-30
I really bought this for only one song, "Tahiti, Tahiti". I'm making my music collection and recollected this song many years ago. I called up several radio stations after I could not find this song on MusicMatch, Connect, or Tower Records.
One disc jockey remembered the tune I hummed to him and he mentioned the group's name. I took it from there. After ascertaining this was the song (30 second sample) I remembered, I bought it from Amazon!
This song has the wonderful harmony of Polynesians when they sing in groups, such as in Samoa. Slightly raucous, definitely mellifluous, and ultimately joyful! So Polynesian, so happy! If this song can't put a smile in your spirit, I don't know what will.
One of the best.......2004-11-06
These tracks take me back to 1978. I remember the DJ at Januaries in White Plain, NY blasting the finale of "From East to West". We would leave the club and our ears would be ringing. My favorite track is "Lady America" which got years of club play in NY. Definitely one of the "best of" collections.
good for special efx for a movie-for those.......2003-01-28
this music souvenirs should be used as a movie scene, not just bringing back old memories, but old items that used to be thrown away. Maybe they should bring back what is old and made anew.

Customer Reviews:
Very nice introduction to the work of a great soprano.......2007-07-13
This 2 CD set is a terrific introduction to the body of work of Victoria de los Angeles. As the "liner notes" point out: "She was an artist who brought individuality and a sense of joy to everything she performed. . . ." And this is not hyperbole. She was a top soprano in the middle part of the twentieth century.
Some cuts exemplify her art:
"Un bel di" is a ravishing version of this well known aria. She demonstrates a rich voice with fine musicality. This is a ravishing version of this aria. The singer displays good vocal control. There are nice transitions across the registers.
"Si, mi chiamano Mimi" is another well known work for sopranos. Again, nicely done. She appears (to me anyhow) to catch the spirit of Mimi very nicely indeed.
From "La Traviata," she essays "E strano. . .Sempre Libera." This is an affecting version. She does not have the coloratura armamentarium that some have brought to bear on this aria, but she does a fine job nonetheless. She seems to capture the desperate spirit of Violetta in "Sempre Libera."
Rossini's "Una voce poco fa" is a nice tour de force for sopranos. De los Angeles does a nice job here. This is a work from the Bel canto repertoire, but she does well. She shows vocal agility and captures the spirit of the work. This is an affecting, charming version. There is some occasional vocal harshness, but not a serious issue.
From "Carmen," "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle." Richly and nicely sung.
Her range on this CD is worth noting: from Puccini and Verdi to Wagner to Rossini to Gounod.
And then another of her specialties--songs. She does a nice turn with the Spanish song "Malaguena." Then, in a nice twist, she accompanies herself on guitar in "Adios Granada." I'm not normally so excited about songs, but in this case I found her work enchanting.
So, if you want to get a sense of the artistry of Victoria de los Angeles, this is an excellent starting point. Highly recommended!
The very best performance by Victoria de los Angeles.......2006-09-13
Is the recording on Allegro records of her performance of Madame Butterfly in New Orleans in 1954, not the Rome recording. She is simply radiant, perfect, a voice truly that is a victory for the angels. Unbelievably marvelous.
In Memoriam: A Tribute To The Late Victoria.......2005-02-01
Victoria De Los Angeles died Saturday of heart failure at the age of 83 in Barcelona, Spain. The world of opera mourns her loss. She was a gifted soprano and a wonderful human being. On stage, she was able to directly speak to her audience and communicate with them in a very special and rare way that is not always seen today. She never hid herself behind a facade nor distanced herself from fans and audiences. She was born to sing opera. It was in her blood. This album showcases De Los Angeles in her most memorable and successful roles. Victoria De Los Angeles was one of the first singers from Spain to win worldwide acclaim. Others would follow- Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballe. De Los Angeles is showcased in this album which may also serve as a tribute to the now late soprano.
Her voice was essentially full lyric with some spinto. Hearing her renditions of "O Mio Babbini Caro"- a signature soprano role, as well as "Ebben Ne Andro Lontana" from La Wally and her performances as Mimi, one is clearly treated to the truest form of a pure lyric soprano. Her voice is spunned gold, with sweet, warm, feminine textures. Her reperotire remained in the Italian and French. Of course, being Spanish, she was a leading singer in Spanish Lieder and romantic ballads. Her Art Songs in Spanish are full of elegance and grace. A champion of obscure composers, she sang and recorded recitals that featured the works of lesser known composers, though strictly Lieder and Folk/Art Song.
Victoria De Los Angeles is fortunately a well-documented artist. Some film footage exist of her performances. I seem to recall that there exists a taped performance of her Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata. She excelled in the lyric roles of Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. Her Madame Butterfly is a pure lyric rendition, with less of the dramatic intensity other singers have given the role- i.e. Leontine Price, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, etc. But her Butterfly is actually the way the role ought to be sung. It's a voice of grace, naivete and above all romance that must colorize Butterfly. The dramatic intensity only makes her sound older and madly passionate. She is only a fifteen year old girl who has been deceived and betrayed. She must remain youthful sounding. De Los Angeles does justice to the truest form of Butterfly. She was thrilling in French and Italian operas and her Spanish songs were briliant and beautiful.
Victoria will always be remembered. She was a unique and talented artist of the lyric repertoire. Her pure, lovely voice was like an angel's. There will never be another Victoria De Los Angeles. With her death, the end of an era also passes. In particular, I will always remember one reported incident. She was about to make her first recital in America but she had no accompanist- pianist/guitarist etc. When asked how she would handle this, she remarked: "Well I brought my guitar with me". And she proceeded to accompany herself with the guitar.
the genius of de los angeles.......2004-02-14
the incomparable de los angeles combines exquisite sound and nuance to the world of superb singing. her mastery of a variety of styles is astounding and yet it always sounds natural.her magic will live forever.
A n angelic voice.......2004-02-06
De los Angeles' ability to sing with elegance and style has rarely been equalled and never been surpassed. She's the greatest Charlotte in "Werther", the most tender Santuzza in "Cavalleria Rusticana" and the most sumptuos Nedda in "I Pagliacci". Her Lieder-Recordings are legendary, my favourites are the Spanish ones of course. What a piano-culture and what a velvet sound! Get this set, it's cheap and it has GREAT singing!

While it is impossible to really squeeze The Very Best of Janet Baker onto just two CDs, this two and a half hour anthology is a fine portrait of the British mezzo-soprano. Central to CD 1 is Elgar's Sea Pictures, a definitive account with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. While other British music is represented by Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea," Britten's "Corpus Christie Carol," and Warlock's "Pretty Ring Time," CD 2 balances the program with 10 Schubert songs accompanied at the piano by either Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons, which range from "Ave Maria" to Shakespeare. The set lends equal weight to orchestral and more intimate song, as well as to works in English--a very moving reading of Handel's "He was despised" from Messiah--and European landmarks, including Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, the latter with a superlative London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. In an age of technically dazzling but sometimes bland singers, this release is a reminder of emotionally intense musicianship that retains vocal clarity and commitment to the composer's intentions over superstar ego. The word great is often used all too easily, but it could not be more appropriate for this outstanding collection of a great singer. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
The Very Best of Janet Baker is simply the very best!.......2005-02-09
This cd and this amazing musician are an absolute must have for any music lover or music snob alike! Her voice is amazing!
Grace Incarnate.......2002-09-02
If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her. She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art. And music. Grace and beauty.
Each track on this cd is a perfect union of poetry, melody and technicality. Dame Janet Baker fully immerses herself into each piece, and delivers highly commited, intelligent & emotional performances.
A Rare & Glorious Singer.......2002-06-10
This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean.
She does not sing to show off. She sings to enlighten, to illuminate, to reveal, to enter into. Her voice carries us off, near to Heaven.
Dame Janet has been neglected of late. This recording shows us why, in these perilous times, we need her more than ever.

Customer Reviews:
Not your average disco.......2006-06-17
Voyage had the knack of having the beat without the usual disco recipe of repeating the same phrase for four minutes to a drum machine. This group had talent. From East to West (three versions here) Let's get Started and Souvenirs alone are worth the price of the disc. Sound quality is very good considering the analog source of original recordings and the disc comes in at a nice 73:59 time.
DEFINITIVE "EURODISCO." SMOOTH, SUPERB DANCE GROOVES........2005-12-07
I know of no better examples of Eurodisco than the studio ensemble known as Voyage.
"From East to West" is my absolute favorite suite of music they produced. "Souvenirs" is excellent, as well, catchier, and not as clever as "East to West." Voyage DID cleverly introduce world music elements [before that term was coined] into their music, a nod to the ensemble's name, and a nice effort to encourage unity between cultures via music.
I want to especially thank the reviewer from July 2002 for commenting on the selection timings, as I hate to get gypped by short versions. Edits are absolutely criminal for classic 70's dance music, and I will not rate a review of this music as helpful if there is not a comment on the timings. Nor will I purchase a 70's dance collection that features mostly edits or single versions.
This is what Disco is all about!.......2005-03-05
You don't get any better than this! Some of the best club songs ever. For those of you who remember when Disco 92 first appeared on the NY radio waves this is a must. Lady America, probably the number 1 disco song of all time, is here at full length. From East to West and Souvenirs with their beautiful instrumentals and soaring voices will get you up out of your chair and dancin'. The jungle rhythms of Point Zero and Latin beat of Latin Odyssey will transport you back to 1977 and Studio 54 and later Xenon, Funhouse and Visage. A must have!
Tracks 1, and 12 and 13 Great songs to lift your spirits!.......2004-07-08
We used the remix of "From East to West" as our start off song, every night, at our disco in the late 1970's. It NEVER failed to get everyone up on the dance floor! Amazing music. We still listen to it when we are down and it really picks us up. Try it!
THE REAL CONSTRUCTION OF DISCO: VOYAGE.......2003-09-21
Listening to Voyage is the best way to get in disco world. They are the higher point of 70' disco. Smooth, wonderful, perfectly rhythmical and integrated instruments and voices to create wonder melodies in a quantity of beat per minutes that simply carry you to sonic ways.....you'll never can forget.

GREAT TE KANAWA !.......2004-02-19
THIS IS A GODD OVERVIEW OF KIRI TE KANAWA`S TALENT,THIS COMPILATION INCLUDES GREAT OPERA ARIAS,AMERICAN SONGBOOK CLASSICS,MAORI SONGS AND MORE,DIGITALLY REMASTERED. REALLY ENJOYABLE.

Philip Glass has already written more operas than Wagner and more symphonies than many composers. With his astonishing output and his professed joy in writing, he shows no hesitation as he approaches the supposedly jinxed No. 9 (he has premiered five so far). The Symphony No. 3, for 19 strings, dates from 1995. Longtime champion Dennis Russell Davies and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra give a snappy, atmospheric reading of this enigmatic work, whose emotional core is the third movement's ruminative chaconne, flanked by shorter, faster movements that toss off grace notes recalling the gestures of Middle Eastern dancers.
Next, two scene-change interludes from the CIVIL warS, omitted from the 1999 recording of Glass and Wilson's aborted Olympics spectacle, surround the "Mechanical Ballet" from the Columbus opera The Voyage. As excerpts, these pieces cannot significantly influence our interpretation of Glass's evolving aesthetic, but they offer revealing snapshots of works that have never been completely represented on disc. The last track, The Light, part of his Portraits of Nature trilogy (along with Itaipu and The Canyon), was booed on its Cleveland premiere. However, there's no good reason for such a response. By his own admission, Glass remains primarily a collaborative composer. It's easy enough to imagine this piece accompanying a retro silent film about Michelson and Morley, the two light-obsessed scientists Glass commemorates. Like The Canyon, this one-movement work demonstrates his good humor, fertile imagination, and skillful orchestration. His critics always claim that he lacks these gifts, that his music is nothing but the same thing over and over again. On the contrary, this marvelous disc shows how Glass's music is never the same thing, over and over again. --Robert Burns Neveldine

I welcome death after listening to this.......2004-09-16
I remember the first time I heard "Le Sacre du Printemps." I absolutely hated it, but what did I know? I was a mere 13-year-old and I thought Tchaikowski was the last word in classical music. A few years later I realized the error of my ways and was able to appreciate "Le Sacre" from a more mature musical perspective.
A few years ago I was unfortunate enough to hear "The Light" in concert. I had some exposure to Glass at that time and had not been overly impressed, but I decided to approach "The Light" with an open mind and give Glass the benefit of the doubt. By the time the ordeal had concluded, I was surprised that there were any synapses still firing in that open mind of mind. I was left convinced that Philip Glass is one of the great musical con artists ever.
So what possessed me, all these years later, to give Glass another chance and listen to this CD? God only knows. I wish I hadn't. Damned open mind --- I guess I just can't trust its good judgement, because his music still strikes me as arpeggio-infested drivel. Did this man ever meet a triad that he didn't like? Most of this tripe could have been composed by 1st-year theory students except that none of them would have the balls to try & pass this off as a real musical effort. One has to give Glass credit where credit is due --- he does have the balls. He has brazenly fashioned a career out of composing the musical equivalent of finger painting. Begrudgingly, I must admit that I am in awe of someone who can pull off a magnificent snow-job such as that.
Subtle and elegant, Philip Glass continues to inspire.......2003-04-11
The recording industry is particularly kind to the works of Philip Glass and for that we should be thankful. Would that all contemporary composers were allotted the same amount of disc surface! This recording, technically excellent, is one of many riches. At last we have a chance to hear for ourselves THE LIGHT and not depend on the critical hubbub that accompanied its premiere. But by far the most satisfying work on this fine CD is the Symphony No. 3 for chamber orchestra (19 strings). It may require several listenings for those who have not heard it before, but with each new listening the subtleties of tone, harmony, and rhythms grow more apparent. Though some people scorn Glass' music as white sound background music, Glass is certain to maintain his secure place in musical history. And it is through recordings of the quality that Nonesuch lavished on the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and conductor (and long time collaborator) Dennis Russell Davies that guarantee that position. A fine recording.
The Light!.......2003-03-21
I find it funny that "The Light" was so poorly received. It is the proper climax for this subtle and excellent release. I have been a long time Philip Glass fan and find nearly all of his releases to be unique masterful pieces of work. Those who complain it is all of the same, simply are not listening. Recently I let a friend borrow some of his cds and because I couldn't find one that was totally representative, I sent him home with four. Most artists could suffice with one, but I can't think of a single cd that gives a good overview of the supposedly "all of it is the same" Philip Glass. This release is no exception. Symphony 3 is one of Glass's more subtle works and requires a careful listen. I think it is probably best appreciated by long time fans, who realize the variance and subtlety of the piece. What follows are some excellent pieces by any other standard, but admittedly not total standouts for Glass. Nevertheless any listener will enjoy them fully as they are quite good, just not as good as what is to come, which is "The Light." "The Light" is full-on Glass that starts with whimsy and works its self up into the heights of heaven. An astonishing and inspiring work that stands as one of his best. This cd would be worth getting for this piece alone, luckily it is worth getting for the whole thing.
Need a sedative?Look no further........2002-09-10
In the large discography of Glass' works only Glassworks rises above the dreary vacuousness of this, and most, of glass' cds.It is not that Glass doesn't occasionally come up with an interesting theme but that he runs the theme into the ground.Along with Reich,Part,Adams and the other minimalists,it has dawned on me that minimalism is an apt word for the music and its composers:minimally interesting music churned out by minimally talented composers;impoverishment of inspiration dressed up as high art.Quite a concept!
The picture looks like the music sounds - or vice-versa........2000-12-05
The 3rd Symphony sounds like the usual Philip Glass orchestral works but has a stronger-than-usual theme. If not for the patented minor arpeggio/major arpeggio see-sawing I might describe the style as "Romantic classicism". Formidable without being angular - I don't know how to describe the CD except to say that the monocromatic photograph of an expansive landscape used for the CD cover illustrates the sound perfectly - broad and wide open. Excellent performances and recording quality througout.

Delightful... except for the last track........2007-02-23
I was explaining to a friend once, "Why do we teach our children to love insipid music? They only love Barney because we exposed them to it." In response, my friend bought this for me as a shower gift, and I love it. Mozart is excellent for little developing brains, and they've selected tracks that are kid-pleasing (no huge dynamics swings or dissonance, etc). My child (now two) likes it a lot. But, the last 2 tracks are excerpts from their other Mozart product, which is a CD containing a fantasy about landing inside the story of the Magic Flute. The loud thunderstorm, screams about a dragon, etc totally destroy any lullaby use for the CD and any mood the music has created unless you burn a new copy without those tracks (which is what I did). But, I like the rest of the CD so much that I bought the Bach counterpart from the same series, and that one is my kid's favorite music.

Superb -- and not for the faint of heart.......2005-10-09
Those who see Beethoven as the great shining progressive of democracy may not realize he had an exceptionally bleak side. We find it in Coriolanus, one of his finest overtures (as performed by Karajan for DG), and we find it in these works, music of great mourning and passion. Here the classical music magazines' plaudits were quite justified; these are among Beethoven's earliest masterpieces, sung with a surpassing spirit of devotion. Albums like these have made Hyperion one of the greatest names in recorded music, and while it has been sad to hear of its legal woes (largely self-inflicted), its musical legacy will endure, and one hopes more new recordings will further burnish it.
A great surprise!!!.......2003-02-06
Last month I received a couple of books... One of them, The Penguin Guide to Classical CDs, was quite influential when I decided to buy this great CD of quite unknown but nevertheless wonderful Beethoven choral works! I am quite happy with this recording, it is a complete joy to listen to! Anyone who likes Beethoven will surely love this recording!!!
A rarity.......2000-05-06
