Product Description
The second album from the underground soul/jazz trio. This is the personification of how good and proud British soul/jazz music can really be. An album that should be enjoyed here and now and be treasured as a gem of its era and a minimalist masterpiece that defies time, age and genre. Abstract. 2005.

Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ..........2006-08-29
Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it. It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ONE CD! It also made my boyfriend who hates, or shall I say HATED classical music NOW like it! That was an amazing feat! We now have many classical cd's and we always go back to this one for dinner parties, romantic baths and other things... I played this CD so much, that it got damaged and I just purchased another one to replace the one I bought years ago. If you are a critic, stay away from this cd, you will rob it of its beauty & innocence. If you are a beginner and want to open your mind to all that classical music has to offer, then this is the best money you can spend. BUY & ENJOY!!!
Misleading title scheme.......2006-01-01
This is what bothered me about the CD. Three of the biggest eras in classical music were: the baroque era, the classical era, and the romantic era. Now, with CD's titled baroque favorites, classical favorites and romantic classics, one would expect these CD's to be era specific. Such is not the case. If you read the back of the CD it even says "from the romantic era of music", but the there are composers like Vivaldi (baroque) and Debussy (impressionism) on this CD. About more than half are from the wrong eras. So this music is romantic in the non-musical sense of the word, which is fine, but a little bit misleading.
Don't Bother...Really!.......2005-02-21
Not what I call classical composers! THis cd is annoying in a way I really can't stand. It lacks the pure elegance of the classical days. Don't buy this cd unless you want a phony all around bad album played by cheap ameteurs.
Could have been better.......2004-02-19
I think the quality is good, and better on a few tracks, but all these romantic tracks?? Not what I listened to. Actually I was kind of disappointed; I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection some were better than others.
I was kind of perturbed when some same tracks on this CD were on another CD, and visa versa.
Still, I suppose for the price, one can't go wrong.
Some great tracks, but flawed nonetheless.......2004-01-12
Whether or not this CD lives up to its promise of "Romantic" music is not truly a concern, being that the entire nature of classical music is that it is open to one's own interpretation. However, I can speak to the quality of the recordings themselves.
A few of the tracks (Reverie, Canon, Sarabande, a few others) are absolutely superb. Well recorded, and played with genius bravado, coupled with great arrangements (it was interesting to hear Reverie outside of its native instrument, the Piano). Most of the tracks, however, are absolutely horrid. Fur Elise for the sheer amateurish quality, Vivaldi's Concerto for oboe and strings sounds like it was copied from an old phonograph record, as does Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Suite, Mendelssohn's Spring Song, and Puccini's Gianni Schicci, and a few others. A few other tracks still are played horribly, most of them already mentioned.
All in all, for the price you are getting quite a few good tracks, but don't expect stellar quality. I would instead recommend Chopin's Nocturnes and Mozart's and Tchaikovsky's Piano concertos of you're looking for something romantic.

Real class.......2007-06-24
Abbado has created an excellent anthology of Mendelssohn's symphonic output - rich, lush and balanced. A+
Great set.......2007-05-18
By my calculations, this is the single best set of Mendelssohn symphonies out there today. Though better versions of the "Reformation," "Scottish," and "Italian" Symphonies exist in other disks, I still like the interpretations offered by Abbado and the LSO.
For the "Reformation", and "Italian" Symphonies, I'd recommend John Eliot Gardiner and the Vienna Philharmonic's DG set.
For the Scottish Symphony I'd go with Karajan's recording with the BPO (that CD also comes with the best "Hebrides Overture" recording available, and a pretty good "Italian Symphony" interpretation, too).
All of the overtures in this set are performed very well, both in technical execution and musical interpretation. The Hebrides (a work far ahead of its time), in particular, is a fine recording. So is "Overture 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." I really have grown fond of the "Ruy Blas" overture as well.
Another reviewer complained that the interpretations in this set are "too Classical." I think they are correct in saying the set is Classically performed, but I think that works with Mendelssohn, as he was "the Romantic Mozart."
Overall this is a great set, and a good way to become familiar with the music of Felix Mendelssohn, or build your Mendelssohn library.
MENDELSSOHN: 5 Symphonies/7 Overtures (LSO/Claudio Abbado) DG 471 467-2.......2006-07-13
Unlike many all-digital compilations offered by one orchestra and conductor, this collection of Mendelssohn favorites is outstanding in performance and interpretation throughout. Maestro Abbado shows a genuine affection for the composer and his genius by the sequence of selections on each disc, and I find no weak performances anywhere in this remarkable recording.

Great Concept but Not So Great Execution!.......2006-06-14
First, the good: Great box design for packaging, great booklet in various languages describing the history of all the performed works, great value for money, excellent representation of the great Mendelssohn's best works.
Now, the bad: the problem with compilations like this is that the material tends to have been recorded at different times and places and frequently by different personnel on various recording equipment of varying quality. What this means is that some tracks within each disc sound much better then others and even whole discs come in varying sound qualities.
Fortunately, the best disc, disc one starts out very well with the great first symphony and ends with the composer's best Overtures and the quality of the sound recording is very good. Then we get to disc 2 and the sound quality can only be described as abysmal. The difference in the sound is like night and day when compared with the first disc. The third disc sounds much better but is still not as good as the first disc while the last disc comes somewhere in between the second and third.
There's no doubting the quality of the performances though by Claudio Abbado and the LSO and of course the choice of material but too bad about the inconsistency of the sound quality from track to track and from disc to disc.
Still, the 3 stars are for the good points listed above and for the great disc 1.
More of Mendelssohn to Love.......2005-11-08
I had heard all the music on here before interpreted by other conductors and other symphonies but Claudio Abbado proved to be the most efficient for me. Thanks to the world's leading classical music label- Deutsche Grammophone -we are able to hear a complete set of Mendelssohn's symphonies and overtures with the acclaimed London Symphony in a beautiful and surprisingly afforadable album. For music that is this good, I was surprised that it wasn't a little more expensive. But good, right ? Just more of Mendelssohn to love. On this album: his symphonies 1-5, Scherzo in G Minor from the Octet for Strings, the Overture to A Midsumer Night's Dream incidental music and Hebrides Overture. These are the most famous Mendelssohn creations. His Fourth Symphony is the "Italian" symphony, with lyrical, bouncy rhythms and classical harmony. The Midsummer Night's Dream overture encompasses romanticism at its peak, with sprightly strings representing the mischievous fairies that figure prominently in the Shakespeare comedy. The Hebrides Overture is evocative of wintery landscapes and sea breezes, a fine example of a tone poem and musical painting at its best. Its haunting melody is instantly recongizable. Abbado is clearly suited for this kind of music and it's refreshing to see him stray from the usual Italian repertoire he is most famous for. Still, inescapably, his Italian soul stands out but this gives this music more color, more volume and lyricism than what can often succumb to stale, cold English interpretations like Andre Previn's conducting. No offense to Mr. Previn, who has produced some brilliant music.

Album Description
"Despite their having influenced such disparate artists as Pavement, Radiohead, and Clinic, success has been elusive for Mancunians The Fall ... the band unleashes a furious rhythmic juggernaut of churning guitar, bass, and drums while the free association of images really sticks." -- UNDER THE RADAR
"The incessant bass crunch and hovering guitar parts drip with fury ... overall The Fall remain, ever shockingly, in excellent form." -- PITCHFORK
"A brutal, head-banging rock beast." -- BBC
Take a step back to the boiling summer of 2006. The Fall had just successfully completed three out of sixteen US tour dates when suddenly, controversy struck. As Mark E. Smith and keyboardist/wife Eleni Poulou slept soundly in their Phoenix hotel, the band's guitarists and drummer hopped on an international flight back to the UK in an angry huff. It's still uncertain what happened in the desert that May, but whatever it was, it helped take The Fall in a refreshing new direction. Smith and Poulou decided to move on with the tour, a new group of backing musicians were dispatched (a group of Americans?!), and eventually the puzzle pieces fell into place. The tour continued, their scheduled recording session in L.A. was completed, and the end result? The Fall's latest full length, Reformation Post T.L.C.
Featuring twelve brand-new tunes set comfortably in angst-soaked garage rock mortar, Reformation Post T.L.C. stands as proof that it takes a lot more than some screwy controversy to stop the fate of Mark E. Smith. Having already inspired many indie rock bands from the early nineties through today, The Fall returns with a new album and a new lesson in rock `n' roll. Reformation Post T.L.C. is the band's latest studio full-length, and third for Narnack following 2005's critically acclaimed Fall Heads Roll. Emerging from working-class Manchester, The Fall formed in 1976 after vocalist and incomparably acid-tongued lyricist Mark E. Smith decided he wanted a more personal vessel for his words, ideas, and obsessions with literature. The group's first full-length, Live at the Witch Trials, soon followed. Many albums and member changes later, Mark E. Smith has lead The Fall into becoming what many critics consider to be the most prolific band of the British punk movement. With his philosophical wordplay, knowledge of appealing song structure, and bitterly controversial personality, Mark E. Smith has managed to front a band with not only a cult following, but an impressive record of success on both the UK and US charts.
Customer Reviews:
Nope!.......2007-06-27
As much as I like the Fall, their latest release is quite the disappointment. Filler is the word that comes to mind. After the first four songs (which are quite good, by the way...Reformation TLC being the stand-out), the material takes a deep plunge into mediocrity. Some of the songs are even dreadful (Das Boot, The Wright Stuff and the Insult Song come to mind in this regard). This CD should have been released as an EP. There is some point being made here, but I'm not quite sure what it is, nor do I care. At least you can't accuse MES of not being in character.
Sadly, no.......2007-05-26
I am a Fall fan of more than 1/4-century's standing. I've listened to and seen, on disc and in concert, MES' genius at its best, worst and drunken ugliest. This new album is none of the three. While I admire his supernatural ability to regenerate/reform the Fall so rapidly and frequently over the years, this particular Reformation is not something to get excited about. There has always been filler on Fall albums (faller on Fill albums?) but this time around, tracks like Insult Song (you ain't kidding!), The Wright Stuff and Das Boot are actually boring, not places for the listener to pause and catch his breath. In Reformation and Coach and Horses, I hear traces of what this latest Fall incarnation may grow into, as MES really seems to enjoy having a fresh batch of (American!) youngsters to boss around and intimidate. I look forward to the next major recording from these guys (assuming they're still in the band next year, wouldn't be surprised if they've all been sacked or quit as I type), but won't be listening to R-PTLC very often.
Also, what's with the outright appropriation of Beefheart lyrics...in two different songs yet?
Love it........2007-04-25
it's as simple as this...you either get it or you don't. There is no middle ground with The Fall. This CD is brilliant.
MES, Elena, newest members strip it down (3.5 stars).......2007-04-15
After another band implosion, this time on the 2006 American tour that found the musicians that had solidly performed on the last two studio discs "Country on the Click/ The Real New Fall Album" and "Fall Heads Roll" abandon leader Mark E. Smith and his wife keyboardist Elena Poulou in the Arizona desert, the re-formed (one estimate for the 45th time) group gives this their 26th or 27th studio recording a stripped down, brittle, and suitably lean sound akin more to their lesser-heard mid-90s efforts. That is, lots of straightforward (relatively speaking if you know the Fall) guitar and keys and drums arrangements in staccato, chugging, playful, or lurching styles. MES out in front from the first lines of song one ranting again at past members' perfidity. MES picking up with a half-dozen or so decent songs that admittedly cut some of the last two studio disc's flourishes and sonic assaults for a less dramatic, more workmanlike, disciplined, and perhaps more modest approach to the music. It draws less attention to itself here.
This by contrast places more emphasis on MES. His lyrics are actually more comprehensible than they have been for the past four or so discs this decade. His autodidact charm and cutting irony balance with him simply having fun taking the piss out of his listeners, who, if like me, should know better than to expect, as I foolishly do each album, a solid and consistent set of songs. Instead, it's a familiar pattern that the last fifteen years at least has established. Not a rut by any means, but this is the template MES and crew use to work within.
First part of the album solid. American cover version: this time an appropriate, given the tour debacle that led to this band's genesis, "White Line Fever" by Merle Haggard. Accusations of speed and drink were lobbed at MES by his former band mates, and the current band was hired on the spot, more or less, from the opening support act. Two of the current band are from LA group Darker My Love. They recorded this album later last year in LA and England/ It lacks "The Usher" from the earlier British release, but adds four tour videos. A no-nonsense approach makes this a respectable if not astonishing later effort from The Fall. which is these days as MES puts it built on the model of himself as football coach and the players his hired hands who do what they're told.
Where in frustratingly endearing Fall style the trail wanders off is with "Insult Song," which continues the first track's invective but with a looser attention to songcraft. Then, with the ten-minute plus "Das Boot," MES' admiration for Krautrock does not prevent this tune from endlesly postponing its resolution, going on endlessly. I get the joke, but it wears out its welcome well before the marathon's ended. The next two songs also match a Fall template, that of albums weakening in their latter third section. "Outro," logically called, does try to rally the spirit, but this is an album that I predict will sound better live.
Production, and I realize the nature of such on Fall efforts, is compressed. Instruments muffle. The highs and lows, the flourishes and bombast, are lacking in a more consistent balance but one that tends too to smother what needs escape and air to shout about. Still, in concert the nuances should emerge much better, and I anticipate-- for once!-- a live album of these songs will (although it's a long shot given the "guy's track record") enliven these songs to better effect. When, as "Horse & Carriage," you base your alt-history fevered vision on such overlooked admirables as Arthur Machen, you are listening to a band under MES' always entertaining autodidact rants and gnomic chants that deserves attention, for more than the tour antics and the annual line-up shuffles.
Business as usual.......2007-04-04
Shortly after the previous effort , comes another Fall record....It is not bad at all, especially if you like Mark E Smith's stuff. The funny things is that even if he manages to renew himself and stay rather fresh over the years, it still sounds quite similar to his previous stuff.

A terrific compilation.......2002-06-08
The idea of a greatest hits album for a classical composer is nearly an absurdity, but the selections for this package are almost perfect. The signature magic sound of Ormandy and his great Philly Orchestra open with Symphony 4 movement 1.Ormandy and crew reappear later with the war march from Athalie-a true crowd pleaser. Not to be missed is the On wings of song piece sung by Elly Ameling in all her pristine glory. The song is simply beautiful beyond words.Movements 3&4 of the Incomparable Octet for strings are included. At the tender age of 16 Mendelssohn may have reached his peak with this work. The 6 Children's pieces are delightful,if insubstantial. The 4th movement of the 5th Symphony is a force of nature, perhaps the highlight of the disc. The only quibble is the inclusion of the hackneyed Wedding March instead of the achingly gorgeous Nocturne from A Midsummer Night's Dream.Even for the Mendelssohn fan there are performances here you'll want to add to your collection. At such a low cost you cannot go wrong.

Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30
Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.
Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.
A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24
Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-03-20
Few composers of the 19th century enjoyed the almost universal acclaim accorded to Felix Mendelssohn(1809-1847). He was rightfully admired as a protector of artistic standards in an age when musical values were being assailed and reshaped. Mendelssohn confronted musical Romanticism and struck a balance between tradition and reform. His music evinces a classical purity of structure and emphasis on tradtional craft; yet it was not unaffected by the new cult of self-expression which dramatically altered musical esthetics during the first few decades of the nineteenth century.
The origins of almost all the music collected here lie in the same short period of Mendelssohn's early maturity and European travels at the end of the 1820's and beginning of the 1830's. It was during his travels in the Scottish Highlands that he 'Scottish Symphony'(#3) was conceived followed by the "Hebrides" Overture which he composed after seeing the rock formatons of Fingal's Cave. The following year his travels to Italy brought forth the 'Italian Symphony'(#4); just the opposite of the Scottish Symphony in mood (morose & dark); the sunlight of Italy inspired him to write "the jolliest piece I have ever done" (his own words). Around 1829 Mendelssohn began serious work on his fifth symphony for full orchestra, intended as a contribution to the tercentenary celebration of the Augsburg Confession in June 1830. At first referred to as the Kirchen-symphonie, the work became known as the 'Reformation' symphony, becasue of its use of Luther's chorale 'Ein feste Burg' aas a kind of 'cantus firmus' in the finale, and the citation of the 'Dreden Amen' in the first movement.
Mendelssohn has always been one of my personal favorites, and in his short life he has composed so much quality music in all genres and in his 'classical-romantic' way he stabalized and guided indirectly the way that the next generation of composers might go.
The performance of Christoph von Dohnanyi and The Weiner Philharmonic suits me fine; I enjoy the discs very much, and really can not find much fault with them.
The Vienna Phil. is the star here.......2007-02-26
I don't find that Dohnanyi has anything special to say here, since as usual he prefers to keep a tight rein on the music. But Mendelssohn himself was apparently a brisk, no-nonsense conductor who eschewed Romatnic expressiveness. If you want "classical" Mendelssohn, however, I'd be hard pressed to think of a better example. The real delight here is the incomparable sweetness, elegance, and precision of the Vienna Phil., who like to play for Dohnanyi. They make the rapid-fire perpetual motion in the finale of the Italian Sym. sound effortless.
This Double Decca twofer was extracted from Dohanyi's complete symphony cycle, and considering that it contains Mendelssohn's three mature sympphonies along with the Hebrides and Meerstille overtures, the cream of the crop is right here. All tempos are standard, as are the interpretations. We don't get Karajan's authority and swagger or Abbado's charm, and of course there are great individual recordings of the Scottish and Italian symphonies by the score. But for elegance, dynamic sound, and the presence of the Vieena Phil., this is a set to seriously consider.
Fantastic performances.......2004-03-30
Christoph von Dohnanyi and the Vienna Philharmonic truly deliver fantastic readings of these three popular symphonies by Felix Mendelssohn. The Vienna Philharmonic (as always) is well balanced, very transparent, and well rehearsed; they play incisively and with total conviction. The playing is especially inspired in the Scottish Symphony, where the dialogue between wind and strings is delightful. However, the best parts of this set are the "filler" overtures. Both Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and Fingal's Cave are played to the hilt. Dohnanyi conducts the symphonies tightly, and that taught quality makes these recordings very exciting. My only complaint would be that, at times, the orchestra sounds a bit small. Still, overall, a wonderful compilation by London Decca.
Double Decker or Box Set.......2003-08-05
This value-priced Double Decker featuring Mendelssohn's Symphonies Nos. 3-5 and three Overtures by Christoph von Dohnanyi and the Vienna Philharmonic is terrific. However, a potential problem arises if you plan to also buy the Double Decker featuring Symphonies 1 & 2. By this I mean that Decca/London has released Symphonies 1-5, and the three overtures featured on this title, as a space-saving, slim-paper box set (see my review). It basically comes down to whether you want to pay more money and get Die Erste Walpurgisnacht (Cantata for Chorus & Orchestra, Op. 60), which is also included on the Double Decker featuring Symphonies 1 & 2, but not on the box set. With either the two Double Deckers or the Box Set, you will get first rate performances of Mendelssohn's magnificent Symphonies.

Mendelssohn was not like Beethoven or Verdi--his second thoughts were not always better than his first. In fact, not one of the changes he made in his 1834 revision to the Italian Symphony--recorded here for the first time, alongside the original version of 1833--strikes me as an improvement; indeed, the later effort sounds more like a first draft, thinner, more repetitive, melodically less engaging. Nonetheless, it's good to have the composer's refashioning of the score on disc, especially when it's performed as confidently as here, if only to give us a renewed appreciation of what he achieved the first time around. For the familiar version of the Italian Symphony is certainly a masterpiece. And the performance it receives here from the Vienna Philharmonic and John Eliot Gardiner is one of the best currently available: polished and energetic, with plenty of the elegance one expects in Mendelssohn, even when he's at his most animated. The account of the Reformation Symphony, recorded live, is marginally less successful as an interpretation, though the orchestra's playing leaves little to be desired. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Mendelssohn: Symphonies by Felix Mendelssohn, John Eliot Gardiner.......2007-01-12
A super recording with a dynamic conductor
Polished document of an inveterate musical self-critic.......2006-08-10
The ease and elegance of his music makes it tempting to believe that for Felix Mendelssohn, one of the great musical prodigies of history, the creative process was spontaneous and effortless. This CD of both the original and the recently unearthed revision of one of his most beloved works, the "Italian" Symphony No. 4, gives the lie to this myth. After successfully premiering the work in London in 1833, Mendelssohn, dissatisfied with the score, almost immediately began revising the last three movements--he desisted from tinkering with the first only because he was convinced a complete rewriting would be necessary, and hesitated to tackle such a Herculean task. In fact the changes in the movements that were revised are noticeable even to a listener not following a score.
It would be pleasant to report that the later revisions make a lovely work even more satisfying. In truth, they leave a mixed impression. In the 1834 version Mendelssohn retouches many details of the orchestration, giving more prominence overall to the winds. He simplifies the solemn theme of the second movement, but undercuts the apparent aim of increased austerity with the richer and more colorful scoring. The third movement receives the most extensive changes. With the arguable exception of a new and interesting transition back to the main section from the central trio, none of the alterations in the melodic line is any more beautiful than the flowing, graceful original. The central trio discards the dotted rhythms of the earlier version in favor of smooth interjections from the violins, pointing up the relationship to the main section but losing the airiness and grace that most listeners find to be one of Mendelssohn's most appealing traits. In comparison the insertion of an additional section, repeating an earlier theme, in the Presto finale seems a relatively minor alteration.
Even Fanny Hensel, Mendelssohn's sister and an accomplished composer in her own right, occasionally lamented her brother's inability to leave a good thing well enough alone. Schumann in his later years revised many of his most famous early piano works. Posterity has judged his alterations to be inferior to the freshness and fantasy of the originals. One has the feeling that the revised "Italian" Symphony may suffer the same fate.
If indeed this is the case, it won't be the fault of the performances on this disc. Only in some slightly scrappy string passages in the first movement of the "Italian" do the Vienna Philharmonic and Gardiner sound a bit ill at ease. Otherwise orchestra and conductor capture the polished grace of both versions of the Symphony to perfection, and also make a strong case for the Symphony No. 5, the "Reformation," (actually written earlier than No. 4 and similarly unpublished during the composer's lifetime) bringing out its drama and varied moods, and minimizing its tendencies toward sanctimony. This CD is an essential addition to anyone's symphonic library.
Mendelssohn Served with Utmost Elegance.......2006-04-05
John Eliot Gardiner may have been specializing in choral works with his fine forays into the Bach cantata series and his recordings of opera and oratorio, but his ability to spring to life the old standards of the repertoire was never more evident than in this fine recording of the Mendelssohn Symphonies 4 and 5. And in keeping with his academic penchant for 'true performances' he has graciously included Mendelssohn's own revisions to his symphony No. 4. It makes for an interesting survey for the aficionado and proves that composers' second thoughts are at times not as engaging as their intial spurt of inspiration!
Gardiner conducts the Salzburg Vienna Philharmoniker in what seems to be the finest recorded version of Symphony No. 4 in A major ("Italian"), Op. 90 in the catalogue. It is sprightly, full of zest and warmth, and yet always elegant. It is a masterful performance. The added revisions are likewise well performed, but serve as only interesting addenda to the wonderful reading of the original.
Gardiner's performance of the Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor ("Reformation"), Op. 107 is also a model of superior architecture. His attention to inner voices and details in orchestration never impede the overall impact of the spirit of the symphony. Both of these symphonies are given fresh light and greater dignity and it is satisfying to hear the standard repertoire works handled so expertly. Grady Harp, April 06
Popular classics.......2006-01-07
Felix Mendelssohn was a Romantic composer who embraced the ideals of classicism when that trend in the Germanic countries were falling out of favor, save a few. The two symphonies represented on this disk show both the Romantic and Classicist: Symphony No. 4 "Italian" and Symphony No. 5 "Reformation".
The famous Symphony No. 4 is inspired after a trip to Italy, and so subtitled the Italian symphony. Like in his third symphony, the Scottish, Mendelssohn stays away from any direct quotes of folk music, but uses the ideas, modes, and dance rhythms of the culture in his symphony. The sunny first movement has the famous leaping melody, which literally drips with joy. The clarinets and bassoon have a secondary melody of simplicity, but still with optimism. The development, with whimsical strings, leads to a darker march, but all gloom is pushed aside for a happy conclusion. The mood quickly changes in the second movement with unison woodwinds and strings, and a mournful bassoon/oboe duet. The unswerving walking bass throughout gives the movement perpetual motion and an almost martial quality. Some serenity shines through when the flute ensemble sings, but the gloom prevails. The third movement is more a courtly dance in the style of Mozart. Woodwinds dot the string-based movement, and besides a bassoon/horn call, gentility presides. The whirlwind fourth movement is in the form of an Italian dance known as the Saltarello. The movement is almost menacing, with constantly repeated unison notes and an uneven switch between duples and triples. Gardiner chooses forward-moving tempos throughout, but especially in the Saltarello, where the Vienna Philharmonic show their virtuosity. He gives the triplets a fleet-footed quality, whereas the duples get extra weight, adding to the menacing sound. In addition, throughout the work, great work and detail has been put into the inner parts, which now receive as much attention by the listener, as the melody. Gardiner's love of the work is evident, and his swifter approach works well, without losing musicality. Many of the movements are based in dance forms, and the Vienna Philharmonic, whose history is steeped in dance forms, makes the music sparkle, not dwelling in unneeded heaviness or stuffiness. A fresh perspective of a popular work.
Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5 (chronologically his 2nd) was written for the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, hence the subtitle Reformation symphony. A bit more serious sounding than the Fourth Symphony, it opens with a grand processional, and eventually into a faster section whose theme is a perfect fifth, much like a trumpet call. The action is interrupted occasionally, by a Dresden Amen cadence, a reminder of the religious subject. The second movement is a bit more upbeat, with an almost waltz-like feel. The third movement, primarily strings, seems to be a short prelude to the final movement, especially since there is no break. The finale is heralded on flute alone on the famous chorale, Ein feste Burg (A Mighty Fortress). An ingenious natural crescendo (by adding instruments) is very effective as it dramatically builds into an emotional cadence into the final fast section. The British march section (or so it sounds) has a stately melody mingled with quotations of the chorale, and a forceful conclusion. John Eliot Gardiner is faithful to the score, relishing in Mendelssohn's own dynamic and articulation markings, and bringing out the natural melodic materials. Again, great attention to detail, capturing a totally different mood than the previous symphony, with great success.
In addition, 20+ minutes of Mendelssohn's revisions of the Italian Symphony has been restored and performed. Probably only interesting to die-hard Mendelssohn fans, a unique addition to the disk. As mentioned, a fresh look at Mendelssohn's music, bringing out detail and the composer's innate classicism, with Vienna's lightness and fruity sound. An easy choice for anyone who wants these symphonies.
Absolutely wonderful.......2005-11-28
Wonderful recordings of Mendelssohn #4 & #5.
The recording of the conventional 4 is stunning. So clear and many inner parts come out which are not normally heard. So this is now my favourite recording of this wonderfully fresh piece.
#5 is done just as nicely: fresh and clear.
Interesting to have the other version of #4 too.

Triumphant return of Flor's Mendelssohn.......2005-06-01
At last Claus Peter Flor's Mendelssohn symphonies, overtures and piano concertos (with Edelmann) have returned. On the basis of these recordings (all previously issued) Flor, who is probably in his early 50s now, is still one of the better Mendelssohn conductors out there.
In particular, his Symphonies Nos. 2 and 5 have been hailed by critics on this side of the Atlantic for their beauty, proportion and Mendelssohnian sensibility. His other symphonies are also good and his collected overtures have been revered on both sides of the Atlantic by critics from Gramophone (which gave the overtures a rosette) to American Record Guide (which continued to promote his works even after they were out of print).
Flor's regualr partner in these performances, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, is a European band of the second rank. While not being confused with the more well-known orchestras in Vienna, Berlin or London, they perform universally well in these CDs in recordings that sound better than ever.
This is a very good collection of Mendelssohn's symphonic music and piano concertos that will rank with the best recorded boxes including Abbado and Karajn. In musical terms is far exceeds the collections led by Masur, Ashkenazy and the newer Naxos cycle of mixed quality.
Collectors that have never heard Flor conduct (or have never heard of him) can rest assured that this is a worthy alternative collection in this music. If this grouping and this price are attractive, go for it.

Lovely, Light Mendelssohn Performances in Fabulous SACD Sound.......2006-07-10
Charles Munch tends to be classified as primarily a marvelous conductor of French music, which indeed he was. But he was able to do central Austro-German repertoire well, too, and here is an example of that. Granted Mendelssohn in his lightest moods could sound almost French, but he still was German to the core, and these two symphonies could not have been written by anyone but a German. So how do Munch and the Boston Symphony (long known as America's 'French orchestra' during the time it was playing under Munch and Pierre Monteux) fare in these symphonies? Very well, thank you very much. This is supple, nuanced, joyful, light but not trivial Mendelssohn. Munch's Italian Symphony is full of piss and vinegar. The performance of the Reformation is not dour as it can sometimes be; I've always felt that if one simply played the Reformation as Mendelssohn wrote it and left behind the implied Germanic stolidity, it would sound better. Munch does that, and it does come alive. I've known these recordings in their plain vanilla stereo form for years and can tell you that the sound the emanates from my speakers in these refurbished SACD versions is better than ever. These are three-track recordings and they give the orchestra a lifelike sound-stage with believable separation, excellent balance and depth of sound. I'm very pleased with both the performances and the presentation. The mid-price is nice, too.

Munch isn't trying too hard, but his Mendelssohn is lovely anyway.......2006-06-19
Charles Munch wasn't a notable conductor of the German classics despite his Alsatian heritage, but he was sympathetic to Mendelssohn, apparently, and whenever he felt sympahty, Munch could be magical. Here his style is genial and relaxed. Instead of the usual display of orchestral speed and precision, his Italian Sym. is played for sunny good humor. It works very well. The BSO sounds luscious on this hybrid SACD of a good Living Stereo original.
The Reformation Sym. has always been a problem, since one must decide whether to respect Mendelssohn's Victorian piety--the work was written to commemorate Martin Luther--or to revert to the natural vivacity and lightness of his early style. Munch chooses the latter, thank goodnes, and imparts rare good humor to a frankly humorless work. The sound is just as good as in the Italian, which makes up for a lot of blustery recordings of this piece from ohter conductors--I'd say if anyone was ever going to actually love the Reformation, Munch's reading is the one that will win them over.

Good collection of German Mass Lieder arrangements........1999-10-19
This recording of Martin Luther's German Mass Lieder was done in the 1960's. Some the songs from the Mass are monophonic, some of the other hymns are in stereo. It is a good recording, crisp and clear, even the mono sections. A good supplement for any reformation music collection.
A representative selection of Luther's music.......1999-09-09
This disc is a relatively definitive collection of Martin Luther's sacred music. It contains his Lutheran mass, plus many of his chant hymns, including "A Mighty Fortress."
