A mere five months after releasing his exquisite double-CD Bedrock, John Digweed returns with an agile piece of turntable mastery for the next, perhaps riskiest, chapter in the immensely popular Global Underground series. Diving into a shadowy and more varied collection of down-and-dirty house and computer-age funk, Digweed's transitions are once again almost inhumanly smooth as he slips his light touch into the outer edges of trance. Still, it's a shock how far down he's willing to go. The sinewy, and relatively airy, groove of Underworld's "Cups" kicks the first CD into a familiar dream world, but it only sets up Digweed's dark, unrecognizable take on Madder Rose's "Overflow." From there, he keeps the downbeat dropping, even while ratcheting up the tension with dark bass-line melodies and relentless beats. Disc 2 continues the trend with a bold, bright, and truly underground sound that trusts the audience to understand the vibe without throwing around the often-cheesy cues favored by many of trance's other best-known DJs. As a setting, perhaps Hong Kong itself is responsible on some level for Digweed's dark-side choices, as if he felt like that relentlessly urban milieu would be a natural for this brand of techno. What's more interesting, though, is that Digweed's style shines through this gloriously mucky mix, remaining lighter than air even when the beats are downright subterranean. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-07-29

This was a very unique item. Fans of the series will enjoy it. At times some of the tracks seem out of place when out of the game, but that's more than made up for by the many powerful and classic tracks that these CD's have. The first CD is more techno-inspired while the second is more operatic. It's good music to do push-ups to or to drive to. Especially the first track of the first CD.

One of the best Jarre compilations, this features some of his best tunes (Chronologie 2, 3 and the outstanding Chronologie 4, Oxygene, Equinoxe, Magnetic Fields and so on), as well as completely unique bits and pieces. Jarre's music is always refreshingly orginal, and this CD is both atmospheric and uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Wish he toured in the States more..........2001-12-28

This is one of the finest New Age/Ambient artists in the business. Most of the cuts on this are from Chronologie, which makes me want to buy the album. Sound quality is fantastic, and the entire album is very listenable.

5 out of 5 stars Jarre Magnifique.......2001-11-05

Jean Michel

Jean Michel Jarre is Jean Michel Jarre, when he is on he can make the hair on the back of your neck stand up and "HONG KONG"
is right on.

I do not think that the version of his signature piece "rendez-vous 4" is the best version he has done, I don't care for the lead in, but it is still good.

BUT "chronologie 4" is incredible and more than makes up for any minor lapses, this is another hair on the back of your neck standup pieces.

All in all I think "HONG KONG" is one of the best Jarre as come up with and that is saying something.

4 out of 5 stars As Jarre live albums go this one is pretty good........2000-05-21

Now Hong Kong is a bit of a half way album. On the one hand the tour that this album draws its music from (Europe in Concert as well as the concert in Hong Kong in March 1994) had some of Jarre's best live music, the resulting album is a bit messy.

For a start, the mixing is quite poor, Jarre's guitarist, Patrick Rondat can hardly be heard on some tracks which is unfortunate. The superb "Digisequencer" which is exclusive to this album is a mix of two concert versions and it shows. Other tracks such as "Magnetic Fields 2" have incredible new intros but are spoiled by weak cheesy sounding synth solos. The running time is 70+ minutes and it's a good album but could have easily been a lot better.

This 2-disc version (no longer available in Europe) has the full version of Fishing Junks at Sunset (an extra 4 minutes or so). Worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Almost like being there..........2000-02-28

With your eyes closed of course. This recording of that live performance is indeed live! The music is as vivid as ever and so was the audience. Makes you wish you were there.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-04-29

I was drawn to this singer by the song featured in Final Fantasy VIII (which is an excellent game for those of you who haven't played) and I just loved this CD. I strongly suggest it to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars Mellow.Subtle.Country Folk?.......2001-09-27

I was a bit surprised at this one. It is very easy to dismiss this one as MOR/Folk etc..but the more I listen to it the more it grows on me..almost like Jagger/Stones doing a bit of country music ie.,Let it Bleed era. Very pretty songs as always..plus the disco/tabla Indian flavored number w/ her daughter gurgling etc. Cute sounding kid! Not my favorite but always a cut above anything else out there. Sting..watch your back as far as Pop diversity..this girl is on the prowl! Still highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars *ThUmBS uP fOr FayE!*.......2000-05-11

I bought this album about a year ago and I still play it very frequently! The thing is, you just won't get fed up of listening to her records! Her techniques and versatility are stunning! Track no.1 (Love Life) is very Maniac Street Preachers! It's great and is certainly a pleasure to listen to! Song no.2 (Face)is definitely the best! Her voice is brilliant, and the track won the Best Lyrics Award last year! The 3rd track (Sex Commandments), is again, performed with a different style. The song is wicked and somehow beautifully morbid! It was selelcted as one of the best 10 records in Hong Kong last year! Trust me, the first 3 tracks on the album are enough to satisfy...The front cover of the album is stunning, take a look and you will know why! To me, listenning to her songs is a whole new experience, and I am definitely looking forward to enjoy her upcoming works! EXCELLENT!

5 out of 5 stars Faye Wong is The Best Asian Artist! [Chang Yau(scenic tour)].......2000-02-07

This album is undoubtly one of the best Faye Wong albums ever. The new album 'Only Love Strangers' is ground breaking but this is a classic. The first track 'Love Life' is arranged very unusally with electronic hip hop rock and the talented voices of Faye wong vocals. The only love ballad, which is rather strange for Faye Wong and espeacially canto pop is 'Red Bean' or 'Constant Returns' on the cantonese 3 track bonus disc. 'Red Bean' follows the genre of 'Its a Date' and 'I don't want that Either' on Faye's previous albums. Its better than the formers but this track is especially emotional with the Lin Xi's lyrics. The track 'Fly' is refreshing to listen to. 'Little Genius' is rather specatcular with its syntesis arrangement. I love 'Love Boundary' on teh bonus disc its very mystic and trip-hip- hop rock and very much like the track 'Mystic Road ' on Faye's 95 album Di-Dar. 'Childhood' is wriiten by Faye Wong and so is 'Love Life. 'Childhood(tong)' features Faye's daughters Tong's voice and is a dance track. Overall this is a fantastic album like no other canto pop album and unlike any other asian artist. MUST BUY for fans and alike and a great intorduction to Faye's Music.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Music from Humphrey Bogar Movies.......2007-06-27

I was disappointed. I thought I would be getting a CD of full length themes from his movies but the CD is exactly what it says. It is from the actual films, in sections and pieces. I can't say it was misrepresented so I guess I was at fault. But I am sorry I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the original.......2007-06-19

As the previous reviewer rightly pointed out, these are the original recordings from the era the films were made. And yes, the sound is completely different from what we are used to hear when we are turning the CD player on: it's mono, it's partially unsteady and some of the pieces suddenly fade. BUT, it's the REAL thing and it transports the charms and the charisma, inherent to the original ONLY.
Those who prefer the flawless technical perfection of a re-recording better should save their money. But for those who love the movies and their genuine sound, should be perfectly pleased with this release.

2 out of 5 stars not the stuff dreams are made of.......2007-01-03

most of the tracks on this cd are available elsewhere, but what prompts me to give this a low review is the quality of the recording. some of them sound like they were taped off of a tv set showing a warbly print. you can do better elsewhere.

    Album Description

Set amid the chaos of pre-revolutionary China, small time thief, Sing, aspires to be one of the sophisticated and ruthless Axe Gang whose underworld activities overshadow the city. Stumbling across a crowded apartment complex aptly known as "Pig Sty Alley," Sing attempts to extort money from one of the ordinary locals, but the neighbors are not what they appear. Sing's comical attempts at intimidation inadvertently attract the Axe Gang into the fray, setting off a chain of events that brings the two disparate worlds face-to-face.

The exotic original score by Raymond Wong is complemented by the film's classical pieces, notably Sarasate's acclaimed "Zigeunerweisen" and Khachaturian's famous "Sabre Dance."

5 out of 5 stars What about the dialogue?.......2006-04-08

I have a question about the dialogue on this CD... is it interspersed on separate tracks between songs, or do they talk during the songs?

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2005-10-21

As a Chinese, I love this soundtrack and the movie very much! There is no more I can say. However, it's a good soundtrack and I love it very much.

4 out of 5 stars great CD, but incomplete..........2005-09-20

This is the soundtrack released to the U.S. Just so you know, the soundtrack sold in Asia features a few more songs. Most notably missing is a song preformed by Huang Sheng Yi, called "Zhi Yao Wei Ni Huo Yi Tian" which comes toward the end of the movie. It might be my favorite song in the movie, and it's too bad it's missing from the U.S. soundtrack.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack.......2005-08-20

If you have seen this unbelievable movie, then you know how incredible the music is. It matches the mood of the movie and everything the previous reviewer said I agree with. It has great sweeping scores with an extremely cool "oriental/chinese" sound and presence to it. I mostly bought it for a few cool songs I fell in love with when I saw the movie and the whole album is great. You will recognize a few of the songs used in a lot of other chop socky/martial arts movies and you'll really enjoy having them along with all the other great music on this soundtrack and it goes without saying, but if you haven't seen or bought this movie yet, get it. We need to encourage Stephen Chow and support him in his endeavors to make more great movies instead of the same old rehashed formulaic, cookie cutter, boring(need I go on?)"Hollywood Entertainment" fare.

5 out of 5 stars There comes a time when you find a soundtrack that's..........2005-06-14

    ...Absolutely perfect!

As a collector of various movie soundtracks, there are many times when I am utterly dismayed by how unrelated they are to the movies they are supposed to complement.

The Kung Fu Hustle CD, however, is far from any of that! I watched this movie four times in the theater, and every time, the music just mesmerized me from start to finish! The movie was great, and the music was even better!

I quickly ordered the soundtrack from Amazon.com, and when it arrived, I was far from disappointed. This CD is fantastic! It does not leave anything out. What you hear in the movie is what you hear in the CD from beginning to end. The tracks are even in order of which they appear in the movie!

If you enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle, then the soundtrack is definitely for you. Go forth! Purchase the soundtrack, and prepare to be pleasantly entertained by the delightful music!

5 out of 5 stars "top film scores of the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-18

If you are a collector of Percy Faith, you must run out to your local music store and pick this one up ~ "Plays The Academy Award Winner Born Free and Other Great Movie Themes" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9450 in 1967) and "Windmills of Your Mind" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9835 in 1969) ~ following the formula of previous Columbia Records releases featuring Faith's classic style of sweeping strings and haunting arrangements, they've come up with two more winners.

Master of arranging, Faith's formula is so natural in keeping the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive style ~ his tasteful treatment always highlights the quality of the composition ~ ultimately making them a hit all over again. Remember the days when you could turn on the radio and hear Percy Faith with many familiar pop standards ~ when you put this compact disc on your player, get ready for the "Percy Faith Touch" sprinkled with pure magic over the orchestration and leaves you simply in that unforgettable mood.

Top performances inclusive for the twenty two tracks of film score themes ~ "A MAN AND A WOMAN" (Barouh/Lai), "A TIME FOR LOVE" (Webster/Mandel), "ALFIE"(David/Bacharach), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart), "BORN FREE"(John Barry), "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" (Richard M. Sherman/Robert B. Sherman), "ELVIRA'S THEME" (Percy Faith), "FOR LOVE OF IVY" (Russell/Quincy Jones), "THEME FROM "THE FOX" (Lalo Schlfrin), "FUNNY GIRL" (Merrill/Styne), "GEORGY GIRL"(Dale/Springfield), "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER" (Peggy Lee/David Grusin), "HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA?"(Harburg/Lane), "THE LION IN THE WINTER"(John Barry), "SONG FROM "THE OSCAR" (Evans/Livingston/Percy Faith), "THEME FROM "THE SAND PEPPLES" (Bricusse/Goldsmith), "SOMEWHERE MY LOVE(Lara's Theme from "Dr. Zhivago")"(Webster/Jarre), "STAR" (Cahn/Van Heusen), "THIS IS MY SONG" (Charles Chaplin), "THIS HOTEL" (Keating/Quine), "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" and "THE WISHING DOLL" (David/Bernstein) ~ notice two of the selections were composed by the man himself Percy Faith! Impressive line up of top movie songs that will surely satisfy the appetite of all "film-score-buffs" and Percy Faith fans...gotta love it!

2 out of 5 stars Great voice wasted of sub-par songs.......2006-06-27

coco lee has a beautiful voice. too bad these songs stink. do you want my love is kind of catchy. but the rest just lacks something. this cdis too much like jessica simpson or chritina agulara, (two artists i would say coco is much better than). here is a tip from me to you: get exposed. its much better.

4 out of 5 stars Unbelievably catchy pop album! .......2006-06-26

A week before NSYNC's No Strings Attached came out in 2000, I bought this CoCo Lee album after getting so tired of it being slaughtered in music album reviews. People and Rolling Stone magazines didn't like it either in their reviews. They called it mediocre pop. I think otherwise--much of this album is fun, unbelievably catchy pop! I liked her duet with Kelly Price, where they can sure be SAAANGING it on that song! She went with some top producers in Ric Wake, Dane Deviller, Sean Hosein and others here. Fortunately, the Deviller/Hosein songs for Coco here are far better than the limp ballad crap they did for 98 Degrees. The songs get hooked in your head and never let go on this album--it's just loaded with pop hooks, rhythms and melodies from the different producers she went to. Sometimes, a few lyrics are cliched. I liked that Coco even wrote several songs on here too--you hear what coming from her in the songs. Her voice is good, reminiscent of Mariah Carey from her popular debut with the vocal acrobatics, but a little smoothed out. For her first US debut after being a major star in her native China, this is quite a good effort from a very talented singer.

3 out of 5 stars I LOVE HER VOICE!!! The songs aren't that great. .......2006-04-07

I bought this album just because I wanted to hear a new artist. I saw the ad in a magazine and went and bought it.

She has a truly amazing voice but the producing and most of the songs aren't very good. It's best to program you CD player with certain tracks or put the tracks on your MP3 player.

    Tracks Opinion

    1. Do You Want My Love boring.
    2.Just No Other Way boring
    3. Can't get over you Typical, Dull, and whiney
    4. Did you really love me? Stupid
    5. Before I Fall In Love Typical Pop Ballad but it's pretty.
    6. Wherever You Go BAD WRITING!!
    7. I will Be Your Friend I really like this one. It's sweet.
    8. All Tied Up Very lovely vocals. Good Song
    9. Don't You want my love? It's OK. Her voice doesn't go with the song.
    10. Crazy Ridiculous Title Explains. This is very bad! Skip at all cost to your love of music!!
    11. Can We Talk About It? Nice.

All in all I don't think that this CD is worth your time and money. I heard her Chinese CD's are better so I plan on buying those.

She has an amazing voice and is very very talented more than Britney and Christina it's just the production and promotion behind her is very bad.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING ,JUST NO OTHER WAY.......2006-03-22

I read a review about this album a few years ago, now i can make my own review and i must let u know how amazing this record is, I don't care if this girl is from Asia,Tokio,Japan,China or from the moon, all i care about is her voice is great!! I can enjoy her style, even if all this more pop thing, she does it really great. Love "Wherever you Go" video, and of course the song too. Also "All Tied up in you" is my favourite. Don't miss "Don't you want my love" "Just No Other Way". Great Cd, amazing girl...Go, and Buy it.

    3 out of 5 stars Fantastic Start...Flat Finish.......2007-02-16

I'll be the first to admit that I love the Global Underground label. However there seems to be a repeatitive pattern with the majority of these 2 disc sets. One disc is usually great, while the other is mediocre or subpar. It feels like themes or different tempo genres are attempted to be given to each disc. Usually disc 1 is more mellow while disc 2 has a little more oomph. GU 014:Hong Kong follows this trend again.

This can make for an interesting compilation with good track selection. It gives the listener 2 sets from their favorite DJ's instead of one long one.

Unfortunately with this compilation, disc 1 steals all the glory. It has great depth and wonderful track selection. If you are a big fan of John Digweed then you'll understand when I say that disc 1 is the kind of set that he mixes when he teams up with Sasha (who in my opinion brings out the best of John Digweed).

Disc 2 on the other hand is disappointing. Flat and repeatitive with a lingering hard beat tempo that gets old fast. There are even glimpses of anthem rhythms on this disc...disturbing. This is probably where I differ from most of the other reviewers who think John Digweed is a demigod on the decks as this disc more closely represents his solo style that he has developed over the years.

    Disc 1 gets 4/5 stars. Disc 2, 2/5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Quicksand: An Absorbancy Unmatched.......2007-01-18

This is an essential Global Underground release, no doubt; the older, more exquisite sound. No anthemic, Balearic trance here. Nor funk-infused house efforts like Uruguay, Miami and Dubai. And even though this could quite possibly be another definition of the haphazardly thrown-about term 'progressive trance', another phrase which instantly enters my head is 'dirty house'. And this mix is about as dirty as you can get!!

Dark, brooding background melodies cascade over one another as hard-hitting 4/4 kickdrums and tribal drum releases waltz together atop grinding, relentless and thickly-lain bass lines. I have been known to blow out a subwoofer disc two with a bit too much enthusiasm.

I enjoyed someone else's sentiments on the disc; that this mix is not as dark as Los Angeles (which was a bit more lost, directionally, anyhow) and less diverse as Sydney. And as another reviewer stated, this album is one of the most consistent in the Global Underground series. In fact, in that regard it reminds me significantly of Nick Warren's Shanghai set - both Hong Kong and Shanghai don't vary widely from the aural range they set for themselves initially, yet both accomplish creating a musical labyrinth which seems to instantly captivate (with very different styles, I realize). Possibly even moreso with this release, though.

Hong Kong is nothing like Bedrock (released only several months prior to this) which is, by comparison, a dance album. I could see dancing to Hong Kong, but the way I prefer to enjoy it is through a nice set of headphones or playing through a quality stereo. These discs seem to find a cozy, semi-permanant residence in my car; they are the ultimate driving grooves. Or, as background music for a game of cards, a pre-club warm-up banger, this album is versatile while maintaining its steady downtempo sludge-funk. And really, only when one actually hears the release will they be able to comprehend what terms like 'sludge-funk' and 'mucky deep trance' actually mean. In my opinion, this album mirrors the slick, dark and uncertain urban life of Hong Kong's underground music scene almost to near perfection.

With very few discs of my extensive electronica library do I form some sort of unspoken bond; this release connected to me instantly, and has never been far from my heart, although as-of-late I've been exploring Digweed's more minimalistic dub tech-house releases like Transitions 1 & 2 and Fabric20. I love his new style, but I am IN love with his classics. Quite simply put: a must-own, and an essential addition to any electronic music library out there.

    5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2006-08-23

This mix is flawless. I can't imagine any other mix being better than this. I have Foundations, Stark Raving Mad, Bedrock (which is also hard to beat) and Renaissance Transitions, and this tops them all. The uniqueness with which Digweed operates is amazing. It even has Heaven Scent on the second disc.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest of All Times..........2006-05-18

If you happen to be sifting through all my reviews, stop everything and buy this old CD. Now.

By far the best trance CD EVER MADE. A little dark and intense, with muddy, burping, evil frog noises. But I like evil frog noises. Like in "In Too Deep" on the first disk. Sounds great. Tribe and Trance is like pouring chocolate syrup into your brain. Digger's own Flanker is marvelous, and the Baggio Track here is intriguing. The low point of the first disk, "Music Saved my Life," stinks, what can I say. Skip over it.

Angry Skies is one of the best trance tracks ever, ever, ever sung by a chorus of evil burping frogs. Worth the braincells you lose listening to it. Although it really should be called Angry Frogs. The Breeder track is stellar as always.

    BUY THIS CD

    4 out of 5 stars A great compilation..........2006-02-19

The opening song "Cups" by the Salt Lake City Orchestra was one of the first songs I downloaded on my ipod. It is such a great mix! I just love it!

Oh yeah... and the rest of the CDs aren't bad either... ;-)

    Album Description

The 1st CD is anchored the standout tracks Underworld's 'Cups', Luzon's 'The Baguio Track', Cevin Fisher's 'Music Saved My Life' and Medway's climactic 'Flanker'. It's a diverse set that starts rather light and airy before getting progressively darker and bigger with each record. The 2nd CD hits hard and intensely from the first track and doesn't stop until its final, draining moments. Here, Digweed pulls out gigantic records by all the big-name late-'90s trance producers POB, Tilt, Cass & Slide, Breeder, Science Dept., Bedrock dropping them one after another with little mercy.

Wow. Put this set in, it works. This is Digweed's Hong Kong: dark, shadowy, relentless. Master work. The Los Angeles set is the logical continuation of the sound he masters here. Very little cheese, very few snares.

Dignifies the genre. Well done. Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Digweed's Hong Kong.......2003-06-27

I have no idea why this collection gets such a bad rap - mostly from Sasha devotees - but it offers up a great set. Disc two is exceptional. "More" by Jimmy Van M and Leeds ranks high on the goosebump meter. If you have other GU releases and, for whatever reasons - don't have this one, get it. I doubt this - ahem - "review" will sway anybody, but this is one of my very favorite GU releases. Best version of "Cups" I've heard, BTW...
