Twice As Nice

URB Magazine
"Truly the past, present and future of hip-hop all rolled into one."

Product Description
After a five year hiatus, the Sharpshooters return with Twice As Nice, the group's first release since the critical acclaim garnered by their groundbreaking Buck the Saw and Choked Up LPs. This is truly a monster of an LP with 29 tracks in total (14 new tunes married with 15 interlude teasers) which were mixed at Supreme's crib and then mastered at the world famous FREQ. mastering studios.

Showing all the hallmarks of pure genius, Twice As Nice is a result of countless hours of beat digging for obscure samples, many cups of coffee and some late night studio sessions causing much havoc with Supreme's neighbors. Sharpshooters are being compared with the likes of: Yesterdays New Quintet, Beatnuts, Jaffa, Portishead, Creators and other respectable groups in this genre.

5 out of 5 stars The future of hip-hop.......2003-06-06

I regret that I had never heard the music of the Sharpshooters until their new album came up on one of RealOne's CD Listening Parties. Luckily, now I have and I can spread the word on to you. For a sample, their song "Japanese Mathematics"--which is both representative of the work on Twice as Nice and at the same time really isn't--is available for download.

Sharpshooters are DJ Sureshot and Mr Supreme from Seattle, Washington: two guys with massive record collections and terrific ears for songcraft. Twice as Nice consists of 29 tracks, fourteen of which are full-length songs and the other fifteen are interludes (including an intro and outro) inserted inbetween as a sort of "palate cleanser" to get you ready for the next track.

After my first listen, I couldn't get enough of Twice as Nice and have listened to at least a little bit of the Sharpshooters masterwork every day since. Smooth samples mixed with downtempo beats and live instrumentation makes for a complete experience of soothing, energizing hip-hop. I never really knew that hip-hop consisted of something other than rap, and if this is hip-hop's future, we've all got a lot to look forward to.

          Album Description

LTM are proud to present Twice As Nice, a second compilation of stone classic old school 80's electro and dance cuts produced by Be Music, the tag used by NEW ORDER, as well as Donald Johnson, Mark Kamins and Arthur Baker. The set will be available both on CD and as a limited DJ friendly double vinyl set. Twice As Nice is the sequel to our hugely successful 2003 compilation Cool As Ice. Produced between 1982 and 1986 for release on Factory Records and Les Disques du Crepuscule, the Twice As Nice tracklist runs as follows: 52nd Street "Express" #, Cheyne "Call Me Mr Telephone" >, Quando Quango "Low Rider" (remix) >, Anna Domino "Summer" (remix) <, 52nd Street "Look Into My Eyes" #, Quando Quango "Genius" (Pt 2) >, Marcel King "Keep On Dancing" *, Shark Vegas "You Hurt Me" (version) *, New Order "Video 586" (edit), Section 25 "Sakura", Thick Pigeon "Jess + Bart" (remix), RFATP "Motherland", 52nd Street "Cool As Ice" (Jellybean Mix) #. Those tracks marked with an asterisk* were jointly produced by Be Music (Bernard Sumner) and DoJo (Donald Johnson, of A Certain Ratio). # indicates DoJo alone. > indicates Mark Kamins. < indicates Arthur Baker. The others are all Be Music (New Order) productions. Several of these tracks, including Genius, Keep On Dancing and Cool As Ice remain influential club classics, and have been extensively sampled and bootlegged. Other classic old school dance cuts include the Madonna-connected Call Me Mr Telephone, an ultra funky remix of Low Rider and both sides of the first, long-lost Factory single by 52nd Street, Express and Look Into My Eyes. Twice As Nice also includes two prototypical sequencer tracks masterminded by Bernard Sumner in early 1982, long before Blue Monday changed music forever. One is an exclusive edit of the original version of 586 by New Order, and the second influential electro-pulse Sakura by Section 25. The album has been digitally remastered and runs for 72 minutes

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice compliation of out of print titles!.......2007-01-08

I have to admit that the only reason I bought the TWICE AS NICE cd is for the second track "Call Me Mr. Telephone."

The song came out around 1985 by a singer with braids and a mohawk named Cheyne. Rumor had it that Madonna co-wrote and sang backup on it, but that was only an urban legend. This is explained in the liner notes along with the idea that "Into The Groove" was going to be offered to Cheyne as a follow up single, but Madonna decided to keep it and use it herself. Never-the-less, "Call Me Mr Telephone" had a driving infectious beat and hook that stayed with me throughout the years.

I had the original 12-inch single but sold it during a drug induced stupor! It has long been out of print and I've been hunting high and low for it.

The other songs are mostly underground/obscure hits from the early to mid 80s. The songs have been remastered and sound pretty good, particularly since most of them are over 20 years old.

This cd comes with a booklet that tells you a little about the artist and the song that's included in this compliation, as well as the producers of this cd BE MUSIC, DOJO, MARK KAMINS and ARTHUR BAKER PRODUCTIONS.

But if you aren't really into that underground sound of the early 80s, this might not be the cd for you. The songs on this cd are a mix of the ecclectic sound of music when it was on the precipice, unsure whether it should fall head first into the sound of the British Invasion/New Wave or still hold on to the high energy dance music (evolution of disco) or both. However, if you remember a song or artist on this comp, these versions are pretty much in their original 12-inch versions.

Of course I'm not sure if these are the actual cuts you'll remember, since I only really know the second track and it's in the original 12-inch form.

I'll list the song, artist and the running time of each, incase any of them might ring a bell.

3 out of 5 stars Hit or miss, but still worth for key "lost" 80s club traxx!.......2006-10-22

In hindsight, much of the whole early 80s Hacienda club culture might seem a bit overrated, but this nice useful CD compilation of hard-to-find Factory club traxx hits the spot - while hit or miss, you'll find some really rare cuts here worth seeking out that will take you back, like CHEYNE's Madonna-meets-Danceteria pastiche "CALL ME MR TELEPHONE" (rumor has it Madge was due to give Cheyne "Into the Groove" as a follow-up single, but wisely changed her mind!), QUANDO QUANGO's best song "GENIUS" in the Mark Kamins-style "PART 2" club mix, and several early raw tracks from UK soulsters 52ND STREET that are, surprisingly, much more experimental than their later Nick Martinelli-meets-Loose-Ends croosover style. All in all, if you bought most of these 12"s back in the day when they were first released, this is a nice round-up for Arthur Baker, Jellybean-esque productions. Check out the other volume, COOL AS ICE, too!
