This is a great CD from Survivor--an underrated 80's group, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding release from Survivor !.......2005-12-16

An all American band and the best in it's genre !

Survivor had a long string hits and this album only spawned more !

I can't hold back and High on you are outstanding tunes !

I love Survivor and thought every release was worth the money and I proudly own all of them now !

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, Even If the Title Was Stolen From Rush.......2005-08-09

Released three years after Rush's 'Moving Pictures', which included a song called 'Vital Signs'. But all laughing aside, this is a stand-out for mid-80's pop culture of power ballads. Like 'em or not, you can't deny their appeal to society. And the Jimi Jamison-led Survivor scored three smash hits with this formula. 'The Search Is Over', 'I Can't Hold Back', and 'High on You' all remain timeless, or priceless... or whatever word I'm trying to say.
Their follow-up 'When Seconds Count' doesn't quite match up, although that one is also very good.

You generally don't have to listen too hard to hear what's on the mind of Los Angeles music collective Ozomatli. The multi-faceted band is rarely subtle in its politics or its incorporation of countless Latin traditions as well as modern rock, jazz, pop and hip-hop. But on the band's third album, Street Signs, the addition of the Prague Symphony and the distinct influence of Arab and North African music certainly qualify as ambitious curve balls. Announcing its intentions from the get-go, album-opener "Believe" starts with a Rai-style vocal melody before finishing with a gritty rap as Bollywood-style strings provide a sweeping backdrop throughout. Never lingering in one place for long, the band quickly goes from there into some of the catchiest Latin Rock this side of Santana's "Smooth" on such gems as "Love And Hope" and "(Who Discovered) America?" before tearing off in other directions. These fearless hip-hop bambinos truly go their own way, saying what they want, playing what they want. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack of LA.......2007-02-05

Drawing on influences from all over the globe, Ozo continues to amaze. I heard the track Believe on the local Pacifica affiliate right after a horrifying dispatch from Iraq. It was chilling--and the song has had a profound association for me ever since. Ozo truly represents the best that LA has to offer celebrating diversity and challenging the status quo. Ozo = LA.

2 out of 5 stars Eh.......2007-01-10

I took a chance on this one because Amazon recommended it based upon other purchases of mine.

Not a winner for me. One or two cuts were pretty good, but overall this is one I rarely play. Not very inventive. Not much drive. Not of much interest.

3 out of 5 stars Music is good, but I will not spend a cent more for any more.......2007-01-08

I dig the music, that is, when I can play it...

...discovered that this CD is encumbered with DRM. It caused iTunes to crash and it wouldn't let me import the CD... ...I listen to all my music mostly on machines in home/work or on my iPod on the go/in the car... ...what a waste of money on a "gimped" CD... ...and I won't spend any more money on Ozomatli CDs, that's for sure.

5 out of 5 stars I have to say I'm not a rap or hip-hop fan.......2006-11-06

So don't be worried about getting this album if you are in the, um, over 35 generation and "hate rap" - that's me and I thought every song on this album was great! A guy I worked with in Texas recommended this band after hearing some of my CD mixes at work (probably b/c I like Mana). I happened to see Ozomatli live here in Kauai and they give the best concert I have ever seen (sorry about that Bruce (Springsteen) and Tom (Petty) who are the two who used to hold that honor in my pantheon).
I just got this and Live at the Fillmore which is excellent as well, although there's some overlap.
If you just like music (yes, it's like having to go to the ugh, country section, to get your Mary Chapin Carpenter and Townes van Zandt) check it out regardless of your prejudices towards "urban" music

Playing the too-country for commercial radio side of the field, Wayne Hancock makes some of the loneliest Hank Williams-styled C&W since, well, since ol' Hank himself. Moving easily from hillbilly bop ("Double A Daddy") to dancehall honky tonk ("Juke Joint Jumpin'"), Hancock has the old-school twang down cold. He succeeds most, though, when he takes that old sound and fits it into his own modern life, as he does on the exquisitely drawn title track, where he details why pulling off to a motel whenever the highway weather gets bad makes his heart swell with fond memories. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Nashville? We don't need no stinkin' Nashville!.......2007-04-12

I've finally had to admit that one of the reasons I don't think I can move out of Texas is because I'd have to leave the music behind, and that might kill me. This and _Wild, Free, and Reckless_ are the albums responsible for reeling me into Wayne fandom. Rockabilly with an old-style feeling that's not a slave to kitsch!

4 out of 5 stars wayne's world.......2006-03-25

This is classic rockabilly. It's got all the elements, catchy tunes with a good beat, twangy voice, and good stories. If you like western swing music with an edge, you should try this .

too lonely for VH1,
too despondent for CMT,
and too ornery for GAC,
you just found it.

5 out of 5 stars Puts Nashville Commercial Establishment to shame!!!.......2005-09-08

My only regret was not getting this album sooner. The music and lyrics are real and unpretentious. Wayne Hancock is a true American gem.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT LYRICS AND MUSIC........2005-09-06

What a great album this is, not only is the music a real pleasure to listen to, but the lyrics are a hoot! Wayne is not afraid to experiment, he skillfully combines old school elements with new in such a natural way. The songs pull you right in as if your listening to an old favorite you haven't heard in a long time. This album instantly became one of my favorites. I bought two more to give as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Album.......2007-06-29

Unlike most people, I discovered this incredible band hidden in the credits for 3DMark05, a PC benchmarking tool. I fell in love with "Lift", which is my favorite song on the album. The wonderful voice, the killer guitar riffs, and some sweet mixing all come together and mesh perfectly along with the best, most thoughtful lyrics I have ever heard. Poets of the Fall is worth every penny, even though here in the US they still must be imported for mucho dinero. I have been jamming to Signs of Life and their newer album, Carnival of Rust, for many moons now. One thing I would also like to point out is that on the inside of the CD jacket book thing, there are instructions for a "secret" part of the POTF site, with a username and password, which gives you access to, among other things, an INSANE remix of "Lift" by Captain, one of the the band's three members. After hearing the original many times, this tune was just too good to be true. So, in conclusion, buy this album! And Carnival of Rust, too!

5 out of 5 stars Price is not so considerate, but this album is really really great!.......2007-04-09

I don't know how much times I've finished Max Payne 2 and then completely drowned in the melody from Poets of the Fall.
All the 12 songs from their international debut album are great. Lift, Late goodbye and Sleep are the best.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh Finns! So why can't we get this in the US?.......2006-09-03

A breath of fresh air amongst the flat, uninspiring 'music' that gets heaped atop all of us these days. Poets of the Fall (PotF) serves up an epic mix of anthem ballads and serious

melodies. But it's all good in the the kind of way one can enjoy Money followed by a dose of Comfortably Numb.
I hear influence of Depeche Mode, Collective Soul, REM, James, and Toad the Wet Sprocket, to name a few. One thing that stands out with Poets, are the lyrics. For the most part, they are smart and well thought-out. They also tend to repeat much less than your average So on to the tracks:

1 - Lift - one of the two singles released from 'Signs', this is my less favorite tracks. It's a reasonably good, upbeat, catchy tune, but it just never really peaks. Not bad, just not

great.

2 - Overboard - this is the tune I would have picked over 'Lift' as a single. Similar to 'Lift' in tempo and energy, 'Overboard' has that extra oomf - a catchier chorus, cooler rhythym

guitar, just a better tune. This is a song to turn up, roll the windows down, and sing along with while cruizin on a nice summer day.

3 - Late Goodbye - The other single and my first taste of PotF. An instant, mesmorizing classic, 'Late Goodbye' spurned my search for who this band was. At the time (2 years ago), there

was not much info on Poets and I sort of gave up there. Recently, my interest repeaked, and lo-and-behold, two albums! 'Late Goodbye' starts with an eerie feeling melodic acoustical guitar

and equally mournful voals. It's a dark song which picks up steam on each verse until some epic 80's hair-band crescendos in the bridge. It will make you smile. I know I always do! One of

the best on the album, no doubt.

4 - Don't Mess With Me - Funny, when this song starts, I always have the urge to skip tracks. I'm not a crazy, highspeed metal fan and this song just jumps and goes from the first second.

However, give it about 25 seconds and it turns mellow pretty starkly. That will only last for about the same time and it's back to harsh guitar. And that's the gist of the song: back and

forth, slow, fast, slow fast. All of a sudden you realize that the heavy guitar chorus is really fun and without realizing it, the song's done and you didn't skip the track!

5 - 3AM - Starts with a croon. This is where the album starts to settle in and mellow. It's a song about late night, or rather early morning, and it fits. This tune is one you might

expect to hear yourself at that hour. Mostly acoustical rhythem with a steady dirty electric following along in the back. And the crooning. Solid, if not high energy. Switch gears and

enjoy it.

6 - Stay - The first time I heard 'Stay', I thought it was pretty average. After about 8-10 listens, this track is one of my favorites right along with 'Late Goodbye'. It is not an epic song. It does not build up. It's relaxed and keyed. It just flows, and the vocals really carry this one right along. Fantastic!

7 - Seek You Out - Has a Barenaked Ladies feel, but plays back and forth with an ethereal vibe. One of my less favorites but respectable nonetheless.

8 - Shallow - A steady acoustical rhythem morphs into a steady, floating Edge(U2)-like guitar chorus. A par-for-the album tune.

9 - Everything Fades - A tenative keyboard reverb flips with a powerchord chorus. Throw in some funky bass, and this generally high energy tune keeps up until it's 3 minute fading point. Anothe par tune.

10 - Someone Special - This is the token 'chick' song. I don't mean that in a necessarily bad way. It's got great meody, some nice simple piano, good vocals, and a steady build. It's really just the lyrical choice, the title in the chorus, and some in the bridge that make be just go 'aack'. But then again you can sell it to your girlfriend. Good music, iffy lyrics.

11 - Illusion and Dream - This may be blashpemous, but a portion of this song sounds like a country-pop crossover, and I really, really don't like country-pop crossover. However, the majority of the song does not suffer from this. There's some good power chords, marching drum, quiet reverb, and a song-ending minute-or so fade out of haunting floyd-like guitar (though please don't expect David Gilmour).

12 - Sleep - Light Piano and dreamy, warning vocals. A great, slow album closer which has a steady build up of it's own.

Signs of Life is a fantastic freshman album. It offers proof that there really are good bands out there that waiting to be discovered. It is an absolute sin that this album cannot be purchased here in the states. I do hold hope that in a year or two, Poets of the Fall will make their way across the ocean so us sadly lacking american music fans have something to cheer for.

Poets of the Fall released their second album 'Carnival of Rust' a few months ago. I will try to review that soon since their sophmore effort which is a more finely tuned and polished version of 'Signs' with more potential 'hits'.

5 out of 5 stars A 'MUST HEAR' album.......2006-08-05

After completing max payne 2, i heard a totally immersive song, from where i heard of This band. Trust me, this band is one of the best! Their songs are totally different from the crowd (hey, that's good, is'nt it!) My favourite songs where 'late goodbye' and 'seek you out', though each song is a legend in itself. It's a pity that hardly anyone in this wide world is giving this band the attention they deserve

5 out of 5 stars Buy it. Period........2006-07-30

As many people here, I discovered this band by listening to the ending soundtrack of Max Payne 2 (I never sit through credits) and was just amazed. Had to get the single and now this CD. Absolutely worth it.

Album Description

Unless you've been living in a bubble, chances are you'll be familiar with the Mattafix single and Top 20 hit, 'Big City Life', a gorgeous slice of uplifting pop that was one of the soundtracks to the summer in 2005.The album's many highlights include the Lovers Rock anthem and opening track, 'Gangster Blues', featuring Robbie Shakespeare of the legendary Sly & Robbie on bass and the beautifully euphoric 'Passer By', guaranteed to lighten the darkest of moods. 'To and Fro' is a quirky, upbeat number but whose dark lyrics tell a tale of betrayal, featuring ex Sugarbabe Siobhan Donaghy on backing vocals, while the highly emotive 'Everyone Around You' has beats, strings and Marlon's instrument of choice, the steel pans all in the mix. 5 out of 5 stars supa-dope cd!!.......2007-02-17

reminds me a little of tricky/massive attack with a little jean-paul thrown in. very good recordings, with excellent vocals and really catchy beats. more trip-hop than club banging, but still very danceable.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! This is an excellent CD!.......2007-01-07

I heard of Mattafix for the first time in June 2006 while on vacation in St. Vincent. Seeing a TV interview and liking the "Big City Life" track, I decide to purchase the CD in time for Christmas.

I must say, this has to be the best CD I ever bought! (Well, It's the only CD I've ever bought.) The varied musical styles and lyrical content are simply outstanding. Since acquiring the CD I've desisted from listening to my usual Rap/hip-hop/R&B stuff. On an almost daily basis I listen to a couple of his tracks.

Get this if you need something fresh. I can't find anything not to like here.

..damn! that's 6 of 13 tracks!

Can't believe this guy is not more popular in America. All of my friends who I've had listen to sample tracks all like it.

BTW the Track "Big City Life" is featured on EA's FIFA World Cup 2006 Game.

If ever Mattafix comes to the Caribbean to perform (he ought to, he IS a St. Vincentian), or I go to Europe, I am DEFINITELY going to see him perform.

I can't wait for his next album. GET THIS CD!

5 out of 5 stars Impressively varied.......2006-08-02

I picked this CD up while on holiday in Hong Kong funnily enough, after failing to find it in the UK.

Theres a song to suit every person and every mood on this album, but I expect most people will just end up loving them all. The solid production on this album will delight fans who demand something more than a repetitive bass-line with thier hip-hop (some of it's almost trip-hop) and the lyrics are varied in tone and subject matter.

Essential listening!

5 out of 5 stars Mattafix is something that worth to listen to.......2006-03-28

Well, Mattafix really has something deep in their songs. They are not simmilar to other pop-songs (which are basically about "Oh, I love her(him) and she(he) was so rude" etc.). Despite of the fact that I'm only 15 and my mother-language is russian I hate stupid songs that have neither something dainty nor the tune itself. I mean, most of my classmates are not interested 'bout lyrics of the particular song 'cause "melody is the main thing". My out-look therefore makes me a little prolix and conservative. When I heard "Big City Life" (I mean, the clip) I didn't enjoyed it at first, but, you know, time somehow's able to turn everything upside down, and listening to it at the second time I really, really loved this song. I felt that some tender chord of my heart twinkled in the most meraculous way! And so, now I have the highest estimationg of this band. It's worth to mention, that other songs are also rather unique, dainty and not easy of access for some naive teens like my "friends" (if they can be named this word). As you know, this songs tell us about us uor-selves: feuds, dispages, fleers, gal, treachery, misinterpretation, escapism, hesitation and "signs of a struggle". We are fast livers, we are too busy, "is leadership the same as treachery?". In my opinion, the lead singer Marlon Roudette (as well as his companion Preetesh Hirji) is very smart and hansome young man. Needless to say, he has a Prince-like falsetto!!!!! A magnificent voice!!!!! It sounds like lullaby (especially in songs "Gangster Blues", "Clear And Present Danger", "Older", "555" and "Everyone Around You"). Comparing other bands' debut albums Mattafix managed to do the BEST!!!
Olga Potapova, 15. From dirty russia.

5 out of 5 stars Why this is not playing in America, I'll never know.......2006-02-14

I listened to this album from a friend of mine who spent six months stationed in Germany. He picked up on this band while in dance clubs and grabbed their CD. He lent it to me and I've not taken it out since.

I typically don't listen to music like this; I'm more of an Audioslave/Disturbed/insert heavy metal/rock band name sort of guy, but this music is just flat out catchy and very easy to digest.

I figure the reason why it's not playing on regular radio is because the record companies in the U .S. have pretty much bought up all the commercial FM stations to play their garbage (Mariah Carey wins three Grammys? What??). Look for Mattafix on XM or Sirius, because I'm sure it's there. It's the fashizzle, or whatever the young hipsters are saying these days.

For decades strange, intricate symbols have appeared pressed into farm fields across the globe. Enormous, puzzling messages from an extraterrestrial civilization--or an incredibly elaborate hoax staged by... whom? Those are the questions that drive M. Night Shyamalan's narrative, but as in the director's other thrillers (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable), the answers aren't always where you expect them. As he's done for Shyamalan's previous films, composer James Newton Howard creates a musical undercurrent of mystery and unease, with nervous arpeggios and sullen, swelling strings ratcheting up throughout the score's unsettling first half. The film is dotted with apparent visual homages to past sci-fi films, and moments of Howard's orchestral score have occasional parallels with the more action-oriented passages of John Williams's landmark Close Encounters score. But there's more than brooding atmospherics, tension-building, and the occasional booming crescendo here. A sense of gentle spirituality gradually evolves as well (largely via the composer's sensitive use of minimalist techniques), with Howard's music ultimately achieving a quiet, satisfying sense of resolve that's missing from all too much of Hollywood's hollow dramatic thunder. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Tubular Bells grows up and becomes a daddy.......2007-07-17

James Newton Howard's preternaturally spooky sound track to the Mel Gibson move SIGNS is worth its weight in the corn carved out and wasted by those damned aliens. Having grown up in Pennsylvania corn country, I can tell you that corn is *heavy*.

Howard crafts his soundtrack using ingenious variants on a three-note theme that is even eerier when listened to sans video than during the movie itself. It is astonishing how powerfully a soundtrack like this evokes the fear and anticipation of the movie's plot line.

The bulk of these tracks set your teeth on edge, making the occasional harmonic resolution akin to a warm bath or jumping off a bridge and discovering that they remembered to attach the bungie chord after all.

The composer's weapon of choice for this gloriously conceived assassination of good feeling is the humble flute. Howard takes a page from 'Tubular Bells' to pull it off, triumphantly chipping away at security with this simple wind pipe.

SIGNS is one amazing anthology of tightly themed and emotive music. It's a brilliant listen even without reference to its fun parent, the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive!.......2006-04-14

In a world clouded by John Williams, it has been difficult for other film composers to get themselves "heard." Along with Hans Zimmer, James Horner, and Howard Shore, James Newton Howard has begun to edge his name into popular cinematic circles. His new release "Signs" is actually what drew me to the theater to see the film. The enticing three-note pattern which is the foundation for the entire score was enchanting and invoked enough curiosity in me that I saw the film on opening day (even though the plot seemed bizzare). While the overture is impressive, I was a bit underwhelmed by the interior tracks on the album. While the music is great for "background" effects the typical moving chordal structure is altogether boring in comparison with every other suspense movie score out there. The album elevated itself to "impressive" status with the final two tracks (The Hand of Fate parts 1 and 2). These two tracks are stand alone music. Opening with an "in your face" recapitulation of the motive in the overture, evolving into a sweet, reflective lyrical section, and beginning to build again with an interesting staccato violin duet the finale is quite unique. The Hand of Fate part One concludes with a soaring horn line above the main theme and evolves into a pensive pseudo-choral in the Hand of Fate part Two. The CD is worth it just for the overture and the Hand of Fate Duo!

5 out of 5 stars Scary, Isn't It...........2004-10-18

One of the best suspense soundtracks ever made in my opinion. Howard is a very good composer and has gotten even better with Signs. The three note motif that is played thoughout the movie is so simple yet suspenseful. Signs is one of my favorite movie. One of the reasons is because of the music. The music shows us the situation that these people are living in a much scarier way.

5 out of 5 stars Signs - Brilliant score by JNH.......2003-12-21

James Newton Howard's score for Signs has topped my collection. The sounds are simple and classic, yet very stimulating and adrenaline-pumping--akin to the famous strings in Psycho. The depth of the music is in its layers of instruments. The music complements the movie (the DVD of which I own) so well, reviving that Hitchcockian-style thriller I enjoy so much. In addition, I think the music captures so well the emotional plot within the story. I typically listen to movie music while driving. On many occasions, I drive with my two young sons to and from school. I watched Signs with them (editing out certain parts). Afterwards, we listened to the music in the car. The three sudden, loud, and scary parts (end of Brazilian Footage [Track 4], beginning of Asthma attack [Track 11] and Hand of Fate [Track 12]) made us all jump. And at every listen, at the climactic part, my younger son says "Swing away Merrill. Merrill, swing away." and then yells "WATER!" (sorry if you haven't seen the movie yet). You can't get a better response from a 3-yr-old. The music tells the story.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2003-12-03

Listen. Just a soft single note. Suddenly WHAM! A shrill three note motif. One that literally sends chills down your spine. Listen to this in broad daylight. Chills. Listen at night. What was that? a door creaking open? Or was it Howard's score?
This CD will give you a slight uneasyness, like Funeral March for a Marionette (Alfred Hitchcock Presents). Buy this CD. Buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A sound that is all over the music map.......2002-08-16

I first became acquainted with the PCO through Perpetuum Mobile,a piece that has found its way into numerous tv commercials in the last 10-12 years. That catchy tune is not the only one on this album;there is also the appropriately titled 'Southern Jukebox Music','Beanfields' and the animal righters infuriating 'Swing the Cat'.The PCO's music is silly, fun and sometimes strangely beautiful(Perpetuum Mobile again).
Is the PCO light classical, pop or worldbeat? It may be an indefinable hodgepodge, but not in a dreary, pompous new age way.It is mostly airy,devil-may-care delight.I think the world could use a little more of that!

5 out of 5 stars For all Public Radio fans . . ........2000-04-24

For anyone who is a public radio fan, you will recognize some of these compositions as the segways between stories on shows like All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Talk of the Nation, and especially Ira Glass's "This American Life." Track #9, "Perpetuum Mobile," is a notable standout.

4 out of 5 stars One of their best.......2000-02-17

Finally, the Penguins manage to pull of a good, all-around eclectic mix of light, airy pieces that lift the mood and stimulate the mind. Of course, there are still some boring (?) solos by Jeffes, but the entire disc works wonderfully. You can't beat "Dirt" or "Rosasolis" for sheer Joyfulness and free spirit. This and "Concert Program" are the best Penguin albums in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful instrumentation across an impressionist landscape.......1999-04-22

Who else but Penguin Cafe Orchestra can offer at once an aural treat of minimalist, acoustic, simple, eclectic, avant-garde, accessable, complex, curious, melodious, and beautiful instrumentals? Wonderfully and exuberantly played, this music is a must for anyone who enjoys Kronos Quartet, Glass, modern classical, world music, or even Talking Heads. Inventive composition, perfect arrangements, and beautiful instrumentation splashed across a modern, almost impressionist, landscape.

Like his peer Michael W. Smith, the exuberant Steven Curtis Chapman only gets better with each album. The 1996 release Signs of Life shows Chapman at his best. With thoughtful, introspective lyrics and crisp production, Signs of Life bursts with many high moments, including the intro "Lord of the Dance," spiced with Chapman's hot Dobro licks and zesty fiddle. The title song and "Let Us Pray" are the two most radio-ready cuts and will leave you with irresistible melodies. "Celebrate You," "Free," and "Hold On to Jesus" slow it down enough to showcase Chapman's calmer moments. There are few artists like Chapman that can combine his mastery of musicianship and forthright lyrics to produce releases like the must-have Signs of Life. --Michael Lyttle

4 out of 5 stars Signs of Life Steven Curtis Chapman.......2007-05-20

I like Steven Curtis Chapman's music because they are encouraging.

4 out of 5 stars Chapman's artistic breakthrough.......2005-07-06

Chapman makes a break with longtime producer Phil Naish in favor of Brown Bannister (White Heart, Amy Grant) and it seems the new combo focused a LOT of attention on making his musical backing more layered and interesting. Chapman himself also steps up to the plate a lot more, handling all the backing vocals, doing some electric picking for a change, and adding lots of "exotic" instrumentation personally (dobros, slides, mandolin, lap steel).

Lyrically, he takes some chances as well, using some unusual metaphors to get across his message (the alien theme in the title track, race cars for "Rubber Meets the Road",dancing for our life in general in "Lord of the Dance") that make this some of his most original writing yet. It landed 4 top 10 Christian radio hits: "Lord of the Dance" (#2),"Signs of Life" (#2),"Let Us Pray" (#5) and "Free" (#9).

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Lord of the Dance" gets things off to a great start. For the first time, Chapman's tunes feel loose and vibrant with an actual GROOVE to them musically. It's BLUEGRASS pop if you can imagine that...the fiddle and dobro play important parts in the arrangement though it's way too electric to be anywhere near NickelCreek territory. The song celebrates God's role in guiding our destinies. ("I move my feet, I go through the motions/But He gives purpose to chance/I am the dancer/He is the Lord of the dance") In contrast to another review here, the vocal scatting by Chapman lends to the vibe and the song would LOSE impact if that were just replaced by another guitar or something similar. It adds spice. The title track finds Chapman in the shoes of an alien, wondering about the significance of the lives of these Earthlings it's examining. ("Where are the signs, where are the signs of life/The love that proves there is a beating heart inside?") Shane Keister's Rhodes adds a somewhat jazzy touch to the song. Chapman takes a decent electric solo on this one. "The Walk" finds SCC sneaking a touch of acoustic blues into a nice shuffle tempo. The message (follow God with your actions not just your mouth) isn't a new one, but it's done with convincing swagger. The "do justly, love mercy/Walk humbly with your God" bridge is particularly tasty. "Let Us Pray" is probably the hookiest anthem to intercession ever. See if you don't find yourself singing "Let us pray, let us pray/Every moment of the day" after 1 or 2 hearings. "What I Would Say" is a rare introspective moment from Chapman, as he imagines how he'd have related to his late alcoholic grandfather he never got to know. ("I would say I wish I could have known you/And I would say I wish you would've stayed/But most of all I would say I forgive you") SCC uses a nice falsetto I didn't know he possessed at times here, and the strings are beautifully restrained..never manipulative (as has been the case at times on past Chapman outings). "Hold On to Jesus" harks back to Chapman's more acoustic roots and is beautiful in its simplicity.

LOWS:
"Free" isn't bad, but some changes would make it a stronger song. It takes a little too long to build. (The first and 2nd verse and chorus don't have a lot of "kick"..it doesn't really blossom until the "And if the Son has set you free, you are free indeed" bridge) and it goes on far too long at nearly 7 minutes. I would still keep the nice coda (with Chapman's phased vocal over the jazzy piano) but eliminate at least 2 minutes earlier in the tune to tighten up the song.

BOTTOM LINE:
This CD features so much of Chapman's singing, playing and writing (all but 3 completely self-penned) that it serves as a great way to decide if you like him or not. If you're just beginning to check him out, this is probably a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2005-06-22

"Signs Of Life" is one of the most essential albums in Contemporary Christian music. I haven't seen SCC live, but I own many of his CDs. It is one of his best. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2005-02-04

This is quite possibly Steven Curtis Chapman's most inspiring piece of work. The songs on this album come alive as you listen to them. I love listening to this album early in the morning. Unlike a lot of albums these days that have a great title track and a bunch of songs that are mediocre and just act as place holders, this album actually delivers. I think at most there are 1 or 2 songs that I don't enjoy or at least feel is worthy of listening too. If you want to enjoy a well-rounded inspirational album this one is for you.

4 out of 5 stars getting better all the time.......2004-10-05

With each new release, Steven Curtis Chapman expands his ability to express passion through his music. More and more he moves beyond the soft, contemplative, predictable songs of his early career and ventures into stronger lyrics and more soulful music. He hasn't quite hit his peak yet, but the growth is really starting to show.

Edgier songs include Lord of the Dance, The Walk and Rubber Meets the Road, songs that challenge with their lyrics and motivate with their music. Some softer but equally good tunes include the moving Free and inspiring Let Us Pray. Most of the rest seem to hover in the vanilla zone, not bad but not outstanding either.

Again, if I had rated this back in 1996, I probably would have given it 5 stars. Knowing how far along Chapman has progressed, and the level of his ability that this album represents, I give it a strong four.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2005-03-22

Testament was probably the most overlooked thrash band of the 80's and 90's with none of their albums ever reaching a platinum status. Their guitarist, Alex Skolnick, was taught by guitar wizard Joe Satriani and was probably the most talented guitarist in the genre. He, along with Eric Peterson, formed one of the best guitar teams in all of thrash (if not the best). Their singer Chuck Billy was an excellent vocalist (especially compared to some of the other singers of that time), even though he never really broke new ground. They combined all of these elements and released several excellent albums before turning to death metal in the mid-90's. This album only goes up to 1997 so there isn't that much from that death metal period. Here's how the songs rate:

1+2. Sign of Chaos/Electric Crown 9/10- The first is a thirty-second guitar solo which has a neo-classical sound to it. The second part is a so-so metal song, but a good song to start off the album.
3. The New Order 7/10- Decent song off of their second album.
4. Alone in the Dark 8.5/10- The lyrics and chorus are kind of weak, but the guitar is excellent.
5. Dog Faced Gods 9/10- A death-metal song that is saved by an excellent chorus and instrumentation.
6. Demonic Refusal 5/10- I knew that this death metal song would be lame when it opened with a space shuttle countdown "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 6, 6,..." This does have good guitar work but that is about it.
7. The Ballad 9/10- The first half is pretty much a rip-off of Metallica's "Fade to Black." Even though Testament was never known for its lyrics, these are terrible. The song isn't even about anything (I guess that's why they named it "The Ballad"). But of course, there are excellent guitar parts that make this song so good, but I dock a point because it is so much like "Fade to Black."
8. Souls of Black 9/10- The setup of the song, as well as the main riff, seems taken directly from Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls." That being said, this is still a memorable song, and the riff is terrific. Minus one point for being like Metallica though.
9. Trial by Fire 10/10- At first I didn't like this song, but it grew on me. It has one of the greatest riffs I've ever heard, and has a specatacular solo.
10. Low 9/10- That chorus sticks in your head and while it is from their death-metal period, this is still a good song.
11. Practice What You Preach 10/10- Great song off of the album with the same name. Try not to yell "Preach!" every time that the chorus comes up.
12. Over the Wall 10/10- Another excellent song (noticing a pattern?), but what makes this song so great is the memorable drumming and the brilliant Skolnick solo in the middle.
13. The Legacy 10/10- An exceptional ballad from "Souls of Black." Of course, there is an excellent chorus and solo. Builds up and up, and by the end you wish it could still go on.
14. Return of Serenity 10/10- Testament's greatest contribution to metal is this outstanding ballad with a passionate, heartfelt guitar solo in the middle by Skolnick. Possibly Testament's best song.
15. Perilous Nation 6/10- Unremarkable song. Not really anything bad, but nothing good either.
16. Sails of Charon 6/10- One of two previously unreleased songs on the album. Good riff, but I would've liked to hear a solo from Skolnick.
17. Draw the Line 4/10- So-so cover of the great Aerosmith song. Chuck Billy is no Steven Tyler which is what makes this song not worth your while.

Testament somehow managed to have excellent production on every one of their albums. This is great because none of them are hurt because they sound poor. My only complaint is that for some reason, the songs were mixed very low. This would not really matter that much, but I have to turn it up louder whenever this CD is playing and turn it down again after it is done, but still this is a small complaint. This is an excellent buy because this disc is almost 70 minutes long, and filled with excellent songs. I've actually found where Alex Skolnick went after Testament. After a bief stint with Savatage, he went back to school and is now a jazz guitarist. He currently is the leader of the Alex Skolnick Trio, as well as a member of the Trans Siberian Orchestra. I actually saw him play with the TSO and it was a shame. Even though he was the lead gutarist, he sat in a corner and just played his songs. There was no jumping around, no movement, and no passion. While the rhythm guitarist and the bassist where doing their pyrotechnics, he did nothing. It's a shame because he was just nineteen when The Legacy was released. He could have been up with the ranks of Slash and Jimmy Page had he stayed on purpose, or maybe not considering the sad state of music these days. Anyway, this is an excellent buy. Testament was heavy, but is much more accessible than, say, Slayer. Pick it up just to hear Skolnick play, he's that good.

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Best of" Album EVER!.......2004-10-10

I have to say, back when I was first into heavy metal I had heard the song "Alone In The Dark" which sent me into the CD stores searching high and low for Testament CDs. And what did they have? The Legacy, The Gathering, Low, Practice What You Preach, and this compilation album - Signs of Chaos: The Best of Testament. At a price of $15 for 17 songs, I really couldn't pass it up. And I am freaking glad I didn't!

The CD starts off with "Signs of Chaos", a very cool guitar-only intro to one of my now favorite Testament songs "Electric Crown". Alex Skolnick tears up the solo on that song with some awesome melody. He has to be one of the best metal guitarists ever.

Then there's "The New Order" which is insanely fast and is a very good song. Then there's the song that got me into Testament in the first place "Alone In The Dark". Really an all around good song, probably one of their finest moments.

Next of note would be the song "Souls of Black"... The song begins with a lightning clash and a very fast arpeggio... And then bam, you get hit with an ultimate thrash riff. Heavy and forceful. The lyrics to this song are really great in my opinion too.

Then there's "Trial By Fire", "Low", and "Practice What You Preach". These guys are really good at playing their instruments and singing. Awesome songs that never get old.

Next is "Over The Wall" with the most amazing intro riff and one of the best solos of all time; followed by "The Legacy".

But my most absolute favorite Testament song ever is "Return To Serenity". From their album THE RITUAL from 1992 I believe, just before Alex left the band, they made this jewel of a song. A neat accoustic intro, with a very melodic and speedy solo... It almost sounds like a ballad, but it's probably one of the best I've ever heard. This song alone makes this album worth buying.

Finally, one more song of note, and it is the previously unreleased track "Sails of Charon". A bit of wah and harmony action in this song, and it is fairly heavy to boot.

If you do buy this album, you will not be disappointed. Testament has to be the best thrash band to ever exist. Alex Skolnick, Chuck Billy, Eric Peterson, and all the others have made this band into the best Bay Area Thrash band ever... And more. This CD is definitely a 5 stars out of 5; and worth every penny of what it costs!

5 out of 5 stars Metalli-who? Check Out Testament!.......2004-09-15

Signs of Chaos- The Best of Testament(1997). The First Compilation For Testament.

In the 80's, Thrash bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayerand Anthrax(The Big 4) are generally what you think of, yet other bands, like Testament, Overkill, and Metal Church, were as good, if not better than those bands. Testament amazed many with their underground and critically acclaimed albums 'The Legacy', 'The New Order', and 'Practice What You Preach'. Although they are best remembered for their 80's material, Testament's 90's albums are excellent, and they are still making music today! Needless to say, any fan of Heavy Metal or Thrash should know of Testament, and, in my opinion, they are equal to Metallica. That's actually quite surprising if you know me, since Metallica's 80's albums are some of my favorite albums. So, is Testament's compilation a winner or a bomb? Read on to find out!

PROS-

-CONTAINS SONGS FROM EVERY TESTAMENT ALBUM- Signs of Chaos contains songs from 'The Legacy', 'The New Order', 'Practice What You Preach', 'Souls of Black', 'The Gathering', 'Low', and 'Demonic'.
-ALMOST 80 MINUTES LONG!- Many compilations fail to get anywhere near the 80 minute limit, but Testament's 'Signs of Chaos' is remarkably close, getting more bank for your buck!
-CHEAP!- Although it costs $16 on Amazon, most stores have clearanced this album, so, instead of paying more money for imports, you can get 'Signs of Chaos' for a low price, and it's very easy to find.
-TWO EXTRA TRACKS!- Signs of Chaos contains two extra tracks, "Sails of Charon" and the Aerosmith cover "Draw The Line". These tracks are excellent, and fans of the band may want to pick this album up for them.
- GREAT LINER NOTES!- Signs Of Chaos gives an informative and interesting read on the development and history of Testament, and this is always a plus for me.

CONS-

"DEMONIC REFUSAL"- For the albums 'Low' and 'Demonic', Testament experimented with Death Metal, and the two Death Metal tracks here are "Dog Faced Dogs" and "Demonic Refusal". While the instruments are just too good on "Dog Faced Dogs" to not like the song, "Demonic Refusal" has nothing appealing, and the vocals make me sick. Definitely the album's low point.

Overall, Signs of Chaos is a great introduction to Testament, and a great addition to fans who've only purchased their first three albums. Testament, while not being as popular as other Thrash bands, retains the same amount of talent and emotion, and anybody who picks up this album will immediately notice this. Really, there's nothing wrong with this compilation, except for the mediocre song "Demonic Refusal", and even then, you can always skip it. If you already have all of Testament's albums, you may want to pick this up for the extra tracks, as they are very good.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO FANS OF HEAVY METAL, THRASH, TESTAMENT, AND ALICE IN CHAINS(THEY BEAR A RESEMBLANCE(ETC. "THE BALLAD"). IF YOU LIKE METALLICA AND MEGADETH, DEFINITELY MAKE A NOTE TO CHECK OUT TESTAMENT AND THIS GREAT COMPILATION!
