I do not know what it is about AMERICAN BAND. It is like FORD or CHEVY vs BMW or TOYOTA. Something is missing....its get bored after all. Not to mention from the start, it does not have that exciting refreshing kick to it. UK bands and Scandinavian bands some how GETS IT.

5 out of 5 stars Astro creep's grooviest metal.......2007-02-07

Im usually into white zombie not that interested in rob zombie albums I don't hate em but im usually into the old white zombie stuff alot more. the first song has the perfect speed guitar riff groove ELECTRIC HEAD and SUPER CHARGER HEAVEN. REAL SOLUTION # 9 has the slow heavy guitar riffs and rob sings in a very low voice which is hard to hear what he's saying but very good you would have to read the lyrics to understand and the last one was my most favorite MORE HUMAN THAN HUMAN. 5/5 STARS

4 out of 5 stars A heavy experience.......2006-11-17

This album is great from beginning to end. A classic heavy-metal album, from Electric Head to Blood, Milk and Sky, this is a ride that will fire you up and stir the demons from within. One of my most listened to CD's, still a favourite, even today.

5 out of 5 stars "I remember her saying, I'm already dead...".......2006-01-31

Boy, if the only "metal" you kiddies have been exposed to is that whiny HIM junk, I pity you.

THIS is a REAL industrial-metal album. If that's what you want, this is one you're gonna want.

The pounding, heart-pumping drive of "Supercharger Heaven". (DEVILMAN, DEVILMAN!)
The riff-driven "Creature Of The Wheel".
The ominous-sounding opener, "Electric Head: The Agony (Pt. 1)".
The hit, "More Human Than Human".
And so many more.

Also, the fun, B-movie horror theme (artwork, samples, lyrics) that has come to be associated with Rob Zombie's work is clearly present, and it's campy and really adds to the album.

This is a loud, proud 90's staple. Check it out if you wanna scare all the Yellowcard fans.

4 out of 5 stars and you don't already own this because.....?.......2006-01-12

Unlike Rob zombie's sole stuff white zombie is more gritty, has more guitar work going on and doesn't have as much of an industrial influence to it, but it's still there so don't worry. A lot of the songs are an adrenaline rush and will have up and doing something energenic. One thing about white zombie that I like but don't like about other bands is the use of soundbytes because it adds to the music and doesn't distract from it. So if you like Rob Zombie or metal then buy this cd you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Shagging down memory lane.......2001-05-31

This is one of my favorite CDs.(OK, so I'm getting to the age where I'm sentimental.) I loved Beach Music when I was younger, and that hasn't changed. If you ever heard these songs on the Carolina beaches, you can't pass this up. It's worth every penny. If you recognize some of the songs, but never heard of beach music, you've got some catching up to do; but it's never too late! This one is definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should own this!.......2000-11-29

This is a great cd. It really covers some of the great beach music that is out there! If you buy any beach music cd, this should be the one! I hope everyone enjoys as much as I have!!

4 out of 5 stars The songs are better when contrasted by other material..........2007-07-14

...but when you listen to them all together on the disc it gets repetitive because they are similar. This probably should have just been an EP with a few of the better songs. When you hear one of the songs on a radio station it sounds pretty good because there is contrast. Personally what I think makes Queens so good is that their discs offer a lot of contrast so each of the songs stand out. My recommendation is download a few of your favorites but I can't recommend the disc as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars ..............Too Sexy For Death....................2007-02-23

This is one one the funnest albums I own. I love these guy's and I would like give the musical credit to Jesse 'the Devil' Hughes. And Josh 'Baby Duck' Homme for finding the Devil and teaming up with and bringing him to us. I hope these guys make a 3rd, 4th and so on....

5 out of 5 stars Good tunes for driving.......2007-02-10

now, I know this CD gets a little redundant with the riffs and lyrics, but it is a stoner rock classic. I just love the music and don't care who else likes it...

...nuff said!

5 out of 5 stars File this under the dictionary definition of "rock".......2006-04-09

Even though it's Josh Homme's fun side project, EODM seems to be Jesse Hughes' life. This album rocks, with only a few missteps, from start to finish. The songs are short, raucous, randy (picture Austin Powers saying "randy"), and completely irrelevant to the great philosophical, psychological, and sociopolitical problems of our day. It's all good times and winking occult references.

5 out of 5 stars Go Eagles!.......2006-01-02

Josh Homme has become a sort of "King Midas" of good modern rock. I don't understand, but Kyuss and Eagles of Death Metal are as amazing as Queens of the Stone age. Litarally, everything this guy touches turns to gold. Eagles of Death Metal rock like mad, to sum things up. Yes, the songs may sound the same, but its a good thing in this case. Just pick it up, especially all you Queens of the Stone Age fans.

Along with "Live at Manny's Car Wash," best yet by Perry who is one of the great guitar players of our time. What he can do with the 12-bar blues format is pretty mind-boggling. If you ever get a chance to see this guy live, a must.

5 out of 5 stars THE ONLY BILL PERRY REVIEW YOU NEED...CUZ I..........2005-12-07

THIS is the only Bill Perry Love Scars review you need because i played guitar in his band for 2+ years...check the liner notes to Greycourt Lighting or Live at Mannys for me.
So im here to tell you that LOVE SCARS is my FAV B.P. record! I first heard it as a 20 yrold fan, brimming with curiosity for the Blues and R&B.Its been some years since ive heard it(friends stealing my copies) and im still totaly ready to expound!
The THING about Love Scars is its got real VIBE...the record actually SOUNDS BLUE...I know that sounds like some Jimi Hendrix talk (of which Bill Perry no stranger) but its for real this time...As some of the other reviews had described (although seeming to lack any real musical knowledge) the record is moody, smokey and the songs are hard won and compelling.
Let me explain the funny titles, Bill is the kinda guy who finally names a song when the record company calls him up on the phone for the track listing...he's not real detail oriented...as he likes to say 'i just push the high strings brotha'.On stage night after night he might call a song by one of the lyrics within the tune, eventually we all forget the title! In his world of WREAKING tone, DARK BLUE vocals, and WHITE HOT licks its really just all about 'catching a groove'....and GROOVE this albumn does.
You gots the FUNK, the burning Shuffle, the SLOW blues, and Bills marvelous although under-exposed skills in 6/8 time, the very minor key'd 'Settle Down Fred' and blues CLASSIC 'Fade to Blue' being examples! Love Scars also drops an adequate dose of acoustic and Dobro material, something we all hope Bill will record an entire album of one of these days.
BILL PERRY IS A MONSTER WORLD CLASS PLAYER...A LIVING BREATHING BLUES MAN WITH A VOICE, BOTH ON GUITAR AND HIS OWN, THATS AS DEEP REACHING AS IT IS UNMISTAKEABLE.
If you need some modern blues inspiration, look no further.this music will guide you and your stereo for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Find!!!.......2005-05-16

An amazing debut from a truly amazing guitarist. Bill Perry has that unusual positive combination of being both technically proficient beyond 98% of blues guitarists out there, yet extremely soulful and musical at the same time. Layer his smokey, gritty voice on top and you have one of the absolute BEST blues albums I have ever heard. As the previous reviewer notes, not every song on this CD is 'perfect', but Perry's range is so wide, everyone will find 75%+ to like here. For a classic slow blues tune, 'I'm Leaving You' is simply awesome...his solo sends chills down your spine. 'In My Lonely Room' is an incredibly strong song for a more traditional tune. 'Fade to blue' is a tune you'll be humming to yourself for months.

In short, Bill Perry is, in my judgment, simply amazing. Even more amazing is that no one has heard of him.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Amazing.......2002-01-29

This first album contains some great blues, songs and guitar from Bill Perry. I was amazed on stumbling across this cd a few years back. Perry has not had any coverage where I live and this cd was not listed on Amazon until reasonably recently. The album is a bit uneven but still highlights his potiental. His guitar is often awesome and his smokey vocals more than adequate. Check out 'down' as a master piece of atmosphere and guitar, the strangely named 'settle down, fred' for his guitar ability and feeling, and 'fade to blue' (both versions) as examples of some funky blues. Some tracks however do not measure up because of ultra high note playing that tends toward partial hysteria.

"america's Sweetheart" is Courtney's Eagerly Anticipated Solo Debut, the Follow-up to Hole's Two Gold Certified Major Label Releases, 1994's Classic "Live Through This" and 1998's Grammy Award-nominated "Celebrity Skin". The Album Is, in the Main Part, Written by Love, with Assistance from Linda Perry, the Ex Four Non Blonde Whose Writing Has Launched the Likes of Pink and Christina Aguilera Into the Stratosphere. "America's Sweetheart" is the Most Exhilarating Album of her Career to Date. It's Pure and Unadulterated, Raw and Relentless, Smart, Brassy, Candid and Uncompromising - Just What You'd Expect from Ms Love. The Album Rocks in a Big Way but is Choc-full of Great Tunes, Particularly the Album's Second Single "Hold on to Me" and the Epic "Sunset Strip".

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Worth a look!.......2006-12-28

This CD could definitely fall somewhere between "Live Through This" and "Celebrity Skin". It sounds almost like Courtney is trying to recapture the anger of "Live" while making the appeal to the "Celebrity" crowd. Overall, the CD provides a decent amount of good listening. I would recommend it for new fans of Hole and/or Courtney Love solo.

5 out of 5 stars BLOODY VULTURES!.......2006-11-14

You all need to back the F off! Fuel your unsightly hatred elsewhere. In a world of Britney, Jessica, & Paris you vultures attack Courtney? It needs to stop! Stop blaming her for Kurt. If anything she helped keep him alive and inspired his best songwriting. She's an artist. The real deal. Does that threaten you? Have you even listened to this album? It's effing brilliant! As thumping as the Stooges, as acid-tongued as Dylan, as beautifully gloomy as Echo & the Bunnymen. Not one bad cut (okay, the beginning of "Life Despite God" is a little painful, but you can't even pick a favorite there's so much to choose from). She has stripped herself inside out for you heathens. Thrown herself to the lions, and you want to burn her at the stake like Joan Of Arc. Typical. You never know what you have until you kill it.

5 out of 5 stars Courtney Loves Best Album!.......2006-11-10

This CD picks up were Celebrity Skin left off, with one delightful surprise, it is twice as loud. Not since 1994's "Live Through This" has Love produced such a cd with both pop rock appeal and some guitar work loud enough to wake the dead. The songs are as well crafted as on "Celebrity Skin", and this CD seems to start where "Celebrity Skin" left off, with all the zesty appeal Celebrity Skin left us. The CD opens with "Mono" a sonic punch, similar to "Celbrity Skin"s opening track "Celebrity Skin". With the second track, it's another Sonic assult with "But Julian Im A Little Bit Older Than You". The next two songs "Hold On To Me" and "Sunset Strip" sound like they could have been on Celebrity Skin with that perfect mix of acoustic and electric that only Courtney Love really can pull off without a hitch. "All The Drugs" is another sonic tune your sure to groove to. "Almost Golden" is classic Hole - Love acoustic electric style song but with one catch, Courtney Love has evolved her style since Hole and you can appreciate it with this tune. The rest of the CD continues with this sweet and loud mix of stories about life and mixing up the acoustic/ electric and electric/sonic masterpieces. One of my favorites is "I'll Do Anything", a classic Courtney Love style song with sprinklings of Courtney's own self styled catchphrases here and there. This CD is strong, loud, superior, and consistant with its delivery from the first to the last track. Matt Serletic did a fantastic job of producding this album, it is as professional as any Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones album. This CD is as loud as THE VOICE OF GOD! If you liked Hole, you will love this CD. If you like Courtney Love, you will love this CD. This is the most hip CD's of the 2000's, by all standards. Five Stars Courtney you came through for us yet again!

5 out of 5 stars You'll never make a hooker c-m, and and eight ball isn't love. . ........2006-11-04

If the entertainment industry is "high school with ashtrays," then this is the record from the coolest girl, who sold the best drugs and still managed to receive scholarships!

I love this album. I have since I bought it on Valentine's Day of 2003. (Still my favorite valentine of that year, though I bought it for myself.)

Mono is just sweeping up the unfortunate rubbish of those three cord playing groupie infested young male musicians, who are riding on punk rhetoric. This song emasculates them all very efficiently.

Sunset Strip covers every Hollywood hopeful's dreams and the nightmare of the reality. Yes, all tomorrow's parties happened tonight. I also love the lines that imply that celebrity is a way to deny death. rock star. pop star. everybody dies.

Almost Golden is classic rock perfection. Appropriately self-degrading and self-righteous.

This album makes me sugarsick and I still haven't gotten enough. I don't care if courtney love's next record is a collection of her covering Bessie Smith, I will buy it. She is a true reactionary poet. Like it or not.

3 out of 5 stars not bad but not great.......2006-11-01

Being a love fan I think that this album is a good listen. Very edgy and loud, but I was hoping for something new and this is not it. I think that it could have been better but it was still good.

4 out of 5 stars Ronnie Pays Tribute.......2006-10-20

This is a great CD! Ronnie pays tribute to his influences such as Carlos Santana (you would swear he was on the CD!), Peter Green and others. The CD is most instruments except for the tender 'Everyday Kind of Man' sung by Greg Allman, a very underrated blues singer. Lots of different styles and tempos on the album. You will not be disappointed. Also check out Ronnie's excellent Language of Soul CD. Nice to see a local boy do so well. Ronnie is certain one of the best blues guitarist out there today. Buy this CD and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars another guitar god.......2003-12-18

Another master class in guitar playing. Ronnie Earl plays a sort of improvisational style of blues / jazz with tinges of SANTANA and other wordly flavours. He may use some familiar phrasings but always infuses them with enough EARL to make them his own.
Some of the songs on this CD seem to be improv sessions and leave the musos with room to move within the loose structure of the compostion, allowing each of these outstanding talents to shine. Just like the listener, these guys are having tons of fun, and isn't that what musik is meant to be all about. Some of the slower pieces bring tears to your eyes, as they are loaded with emotion and RONNIE's guitar is crying in the most pitifull way. If you like the guitar, you simply must have this mans musik. RONNIE EARL is unique in his styling and approach and should therefore be in any guitar fans collection.

5 out of 5 stars An incredibly versatile guitarist.......2001-08-04

Without going into a blow by blow description of every song on this CD, I would like to say that Ronnie Earl is one of the most talented and versatile guitar players I have ever heard. At times he can remind you a bit of Carlos Santana, but most of the time you just think, "Man, I have never heard anything quite like this before". Ronnie is probably best known as a blues guitarist but this work (and some of his others) goes much further, exploring the boundaries where the blues meet jazz. The rest of the players are also top notch. Ronnie seems to recognize this, keeping his playing within the context of the songs and allowing others to stretch out as well. For kicking back and relaxing after a hard week at work or to add just the right touch to a romantic environment, this music is hard to beat. We never leave for a beach vacation without a couple of Ronnie Earl CDs along for the ride.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible album.......2000-10-07

I wish I could sum this album up in one sentence, but I can't. It's so many things: romantic, powerful, intricate, blistering.. Especially appreciated are Anne's Dream, Mother Angel, I Liked That Thing You Did, and Everyday Kinda Man. An amazing album that I never get tired of. Goes very well with Stevie Ray Vaughan (Best of) and Robert Cray (Take Your Shoes off).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Jazz/Blues CD!.......2000-06-30

COLOUR OF LOVE FEATURES AS SPECIAL GUESTS, JAZZMAN HANK CRAWFORD (RECENT CD: CRUNCH TIME) ON SAX, GREGG ALLMAN (ALLMAN BROTHERS) ON B3 AND VOCALS ON ONE SONG, JAI JOHANNY "JAIMOE" JOHANSON (ALLMAN BROTHERS) ON DRUMS AND MARC QUINONES (ALLMAN BROTHERS) PLAYING PERCUSSION.

COMBINING THESE TALENTED MUSICIANS WITH THE BLUES GUITAR OF RONNIE EARL RESULTS IN A REALLY NICE BLUESY JAZZ RECORDING WITH LATIN, ALMOST SANTANA LIKE, OVERTONES. IN FACT, INSTRUMENTALS LIKE "BONNIE'S THEME" WILL HAVE YOU CHECKING THE LINER NOTES TO SEE WHETHER CARLOS SANTANA IS ACTUALLY PLAYING ON THE CD. HE'S NOT!. WHAT YOU WILL SEE HOWEVER, IS THAT EARL DEDICATES THE ENTIRE CD TO CARLOS SANTANA, DICKEY BETTS (ALLMAN BROTHERS) AND JAZZMAN PAT MARTINO ALL OF WHOSE INFLUENCES ARE WEAVED THROUGHOUT THE CD.

IN ADDITION TO THE OVERALL CD DEDICATION THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL NUMBERS DEDICATED TO JIMMIE VAUGHAN, ANNE FRANK, PETER GREEN, KAY LANDRY AND ALBERT COLLINS. THIS CD IS TOP NOTCH AND WILL BE ENJOYED BY BLUES FANS, JAZZ FANS, SANTANA FANS AND PEACH HEADS ALIKE. 5 STARS.

With a twang and a jangle, the Derailers conjure an era of vintage Top 40, when country, soul, rave-up rockabilly, and catchy pop could all be heard on the same AM station. Though Buck Owens remains a seminal influence on the Derailers, the departure of Tony Villaneuva--who founded and fronted the band with Brian Hofeldt--has pushed Hofeldt's pop-rock instincts to the fore. He has recruited a crucial collaborator in producer Buzz Cason, who shares songwriting credit on more than half the material here. The veteran Cason's "Soldier of Love" title cut was an early 1960s hit for Arthur Alexander and was later covered by the Beatles on Live at the BBC, whose inspiration the Derailers channel here. The opening "Cold Beer, Hot Women, and Cool Country Music" and closing "It's Never Too Late for a Party" could have appeared on any Derailers album, as could the Johnny Cash tribute "An American Man" and the instrumental "Poppycock." But the balladry of "The One Before Me," the bittersweet "Every Time It Rains," and the falsetto- and harmony-laden "Everything I Believe In" find the band extending its range. While the variety of styles has Hofeldt sounding like a vocal chameleon, the musical vitality suggests that the band has found new life. --Don McLeese

3 out of 5 stars Derailers derailed.......2007-05-14

Can't put my finger on it but this is not what I've come to expect from this great band. It's boring and it's far short of their previous recors.

4 out of 5 stars A great surprise.......2006-09-27

I was very reluctant to buy this CD, because I couldn't imagine the Derailers without the incredible Tony Villanueva. His amazing honky-tonk voice was the essence of this band (which has had numerous personnel changes over the years). However, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this CD is. Brian Hofeldt has done a great job as the full-time lead singer. While there are a few very fine vintage honky-tonk songs here, the other songs are very good rockabilly/mild country tunes. If you liked the Tony Villanueva Derailers, you'll like this too. And speaking of Tony, I sure hope he has a solo CD coming out soon.

2 out of 5 stars I miss Tony!!.......2006-09-26

I am a long-time Derailers fan but can't listen to them since the departure of Tony Villanueva. Don't get me wrong, Brian Hofeldt is a talented singer and is very charismatic but without Tony it just doesn't work for me.

4 out of 5 stars Derailers - Soldiers of Love.......2006-08-15

This is my first Derailers album. I had heard of them before, but never really wanted to buy an album. I think I've been missing out on a great band!

Derailers' "Soldier of Love" is good - really good - I'm tempted to give it 5 stars but that'll be determined if I'm still listening to this 5 years from now. For now though, this is great "Americana" music. This is what real music is about. This is where country music started, where it has evolved to, and it's nice to see how it can still sound good in the year 2006.

The songs are really good throughout - start to finish. The lyrics and choruses are very catchy without being cheesey - except for the "Get 'Er Done" song - That phrase is so played out by now, you'd think they'd have known better.

This album takes honky tonk, country, rockabilly, and mixes them all together to make a great album. It's a record for good times and cold beer. It's nice to hear real good, quality "country" music every once in awhile.

5 out of 5 stars their best yet.......2006-02-15

First and foremost Orenda and Maria are deeply introspective and unpretentious poets.
They are mere mortals and they embrace, yet do not crush, that fact. Nor do they see
fit to make it an altar on which to sacrifice their inner children. The culmination
is that of ancient souls very much aware of their current journey through whimsical
youth. That and a profound sense that both the old and the new are keenly aware of
and watching the other with curious fascination. They articulate these things with
a magical ease that would make the best of deeply human sentiment driven poets to
snap all their crayons in half and take a sabbatical in hopes of losing all the lofty
veneer that weights them near to drowning in waters five syllables deep. They don't
get too specifically personal (no songs that tell us the names of everyone they know
and love and hate - a thing that is all too prevalent in music lately) and they don't
dole out huge clay tables of sage lesson. Instead they discuss experience in the
context of experience.

Secondly they both have multitudes of identity in their voices. Energetic and happy
children etched with young women in and out of love and overcast by clouds of the
weary who have been worn much by experience. They sing sing softly. To many a singer
that is a death card as the human voice usually sounds very different at various
volumes and we live in a culture that charms the the loud and often harsh. Yet they
thrive in the serene end of the pool and again it is magically transposed to the ear.
Their voices compliment one another on an order that is seldom experienced. Get to
love one and you'll melt to a euphoric puddle of goo when you hear them both together.

One of the hallmarks of Azure Ray has been an oft song that sort of drones along the
same base few chords and/or rythems. They not only pull it off such that one doesn't
feel they've been 'droned' but they go so far as to somehow keep it sounding fresh.
I suspect part of that has to do with their skill and talent as musicians equaling
that of every aspect previously mentioned. Their choice of harmonies and rythems are
such that they compliment this style. But not everything they do is like that. In
fact on this album they demonstrate a most impressive harmonically rich song 'We Are
Mice' that really tugs the listener in with it's dark delicious alternating dissonance
and consonance with verse must surely have been penned by someone with firsthand
knowledge of clinical depression:

'it's all in the eyes
the reckless way we dream to die
our past is our future
...
we'll touch hands on the street
smile and keep moving on towards the heat
...
it's our lot in life'

And again they depart in 'If You Fall' which is anything but a drone. It's major
chords progress in half steps with a joyful vivaciousness that will have you
bouncing up and down in your seat to tempo. The lyrics of this song fall in
thematically with the the whole 'Hold On Love' thread and have elements of
optimism, fascination, curiosity, and somewhat tame optimism:

'let's talk and we'll fill the air with imagery that lasts forever
...
if you fall will you get up
...
you drift too far will you swim towards the shore
and if you fell in love will you hold on to it
...
you speak so sweet with words so delicate
a glass i hope will never shatter'

And of as mentioned the weary and worn exemplified in 'Look To Me':

'i hold your hand as you slip from me
as i watch your breath i say to myself one day this will all end
...
but i know you're right as i begin to pack
without raising your eyes i hear you sigh oh you'll be back
because i look to you and you look to me
we're a real f****d up family'

This is Azure Ray's finest collection to date. I see they've both done solo
albums and in reading an interview with Orenda Fink I was left with the
impression that while things are still good they are feeling the need for
time away from one another. Not surprising at all but tragic if that should
turn into a permenant arrangement. I understand they've been touring apart,
one as Azure Ray and the other with collaborative efforts with other musicians
which fortifies my concern. While both are good as individuals it would be
a terrific loss to lose them as a team. I'm always amazed at what hits the
airwaves and music videos; at who is raking in sickening amounts of money
and who still tour as if on a serious budget. These two women are the real
deal. If you like what you've read give them a shot. If you like your shot
then spread the word and buy a copy for a friend or two. It's up to people
like you and I to force an obviously corrupt music industry's hand to play
a much higher caliber of music consistently. Your dollar is the vote that
counts.

Best Wishes, -frank-

it's awesome for those nights when you feel completely alone and doomed to fail at life. it's awesome when you need to know that things might not get better and that it's still going to be okay. it's awesome when none of the other cd's you have seem to fit. it's beautiful and poetic. it helps you make something good out of life when it sucks the most. it helps you through those times that we all have.

5 out of 5 stars Evocative -- A Slow Dance in a Ghost Town.......2004-12-30

Taking nothing from their own uniquely sonorous voices, I find Azure Ray at an evocative intersection of Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams, and Margo Timmins of The Cowboy Junkies. There is an anti-heroic quality of pastoral loneliness in their voices, like whispers sung; highly recommended.

Labour of Love casts attention on a facet of Nick Lowe's talent that's surprisingly uncelebrated--his songwriting prowess. Having made his mark as a producer, performer, and sideman, Lowe's skills as a singer-songwriter have been taken for granted, but, as this tribute confirms, Nick has long possessed a knack for mating blissful hooks with pithy couplets. Here an assortment of players and singers from a range of genres tackle Lowe gems dating from his new wave heyday up through his brilliant late-'90s comeback. Proving the adaptability of Lowe's material is half the fun here, as Joe Louis Walker turns the '70s anthem ("What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" into a midtempo soul lament, "Half a Boy and Half a Man" is transformed by Sleepy LaBeef and C.J. Chenier into a zydeco workout, and "Soulful Wind" is given the deep blues treatment by Guy Davis. With Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, and Dar Williams along for the ride, the 13-song set deftly mixes and matches stars, commendable journeymen, and crack players into a tribute worthy of one of contemporary music's unsung heroes. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the most solid tribute albums that I have heard..........2005-05-01

This is one of the most solid tribute albums that I have heard. The first half is 5 star territory leading off with Dar Williams singing "All Men Are Liars" into an authentic New Orleans feel with Graham Parker doing "The Rose of England" with T-Bone Walk on mandolin and accordion. Next up is Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers doing a superb version of "Cracking Up" and then back to New Orleans with Sleepy LaBeef teaming up with C.J. Chenier on "Half a Boy and Half a Man".

Other strong cuts are a couple of songs by Marshall Crenshaw, especially his version of "Television", a very somber Charlie Musselwhite with some heartfelt vocals and harmonica on "Faithless Lover" that you just don't want to end, and Elvis Costello singing and playing every instrument very nicely on "Egypt". The rest of the album is pretty solid with not one bad song to be found among these tracks. There's also a very talented backing band led by G.E. Smith throughout much of this CD as well.

5 out of 5 stars What, Not Labor Of Lowe?.......2002-07-23

This excellent tribute album demonstrates the strength of Nick's songwriting, although this is not something that has gone unnoticed by his fans. Nick Lowe's cutting wit and his unfailing gift for the hook are the reason that he has been around so very long. Amusingly, Lowe is probably best known for Elvis Costello's cover of `What's So Funny About peace love And Understanding', though that song is not included here. Even more amusing is the fact that a little noticed cover of that same track on the monster selling BODYGAURD soundtrack made Lowe a millionaire. It's all about the covers, and this little gem of an album is chuck full of excellent covers. Especially notable are Petty's `Cracking Up' (originally included on his bloated box set, which is also excellent, by the way), Parker's `The rose Of England', Greg Brown's `Where's my Everything' and Marshall Crenshaw's `Television'. I suppose that given the excellence of the contributing artists, it's no surprise that LABOR OF LOVE is a five star album. It's a must have for his fans and excellent introduction to the Jesus Of Cool for the uninitiated.

4 out of 5 stars Great covers of greater songs.......2002-02-24

On the first couple of listens, I thought this was a fairly run-of-the-mill tribute album. A tribute album should generally show you new things in songs you already know and love, and should highlight a couple of songs you may never have heard. The covers here were mostly note-for-note, with only a couple of twists on old material. But with more and more listening, the wonder of Nick Lowe's songwriting shines through, and some of the covers became revelatory. Marshall Crenshaw's contributions are fantastic (and if you don't know it, Marshall Crenshaw is at the top of his form these days - check out his live album). Tom Petty was a natural for "Cracking Up." Rockabilly star and hardest working man in rock Sleepy LaBeef teams up with CJ Chenier to put the fun into "Half a Boy and Half a Man" (my five-year-old reasons "that makes him a teenager, right?"). Dar Williams is fine, but does anyone remember Ric Astley anymore? Elvis Costello is revelatory, but he's ALWAYS revelatory these days, the only true singer left on the planet. Listen, if you have even half a love for Nick Lowe, check this out.

5 out of 5 stars A nice addition to all the great Nick Lowe CD's out there.......2001-10-19

Coming on the heels of Nicks new album this is a very timely release. I'm surprised to see no one else had reviewed this CD since it's a fine album of interesting artists covering a truly great songwriter. And thankfully, most of it works well. For originality I'd run with Costello's "Egypt," The combination of Sleepy labeef and CJ Chenier rocking country cajun version of Half a Boy, " and I like turning "Cruel to be Kind" into a song for two singers. After that there are real solid interpretations by Dar Williams, Graham Parker (his voice just gets better and better), Tom Petty, Marshall Crenshaw and Greg Brown . I was amazed by Charlie Musselwhites vocals on one of Nicks new masterpieces. And that's my only gripe; I wish there had been more songs from his last recordings. Still I guess a tribute record has to cover songs everyone knows. Still there's easily a volume two, especially Now that we've just got more classic songs from This Year's "Convincer." Bottom-line; buy Nicks if you don't own all these songs. If you do then you'll surely enjoy this Labour Of Love
