In the vein of 1995's Gone, Dwight Yoakam continues to argue for an alternative-country future. Expanding his retro Bakersfield sound with significant flourishes of more contemporary and not-so-contemporary pop, rock, and soul, A Long Way Home is an aurally stunning and eclectic recording. "These Arms" begins as a Ray Price shuffle, then seamlessly morphs into a dramatic pop gem, while the thrilling "Yet to Succeed" and "I'll Just Take These" are modern countrypolitan. And mixed among the country pop are roadhouse rockers and bluegrassy hollers, all with some of the more arresting lyrics of Yoakam's career. His last three releases--collections of live tracks, quirky covers and Christmas songs--have been distressingly subpar, but A Long Way Home finds Yoakam not as far from home as we'd feared. --David Cantwell

Dwight does it again.......2005-11-27

Starting in the late 80s thru now, Dwight never disappoints fans. Each cd release gets better and better. His cds are cheap and well worth the asking price. Things Change is probably one of the best country songs of the last 10 years and the rest of the cd is amazing. Highly recommended.

An Outstanding Album.......2005-10-05

Typical Dwight....brilliant. This album doesn't have the popularity of "This Time" or "Guitars, Cadillacs, etc..." which is a real shame. This album is nothing but pure traditional country music with a little rockabilly thrown in for good measure. Persoanlly, I find the best tracks to be "Same Fool" (return to Bakersfield sound for the staring number), "Things Change" (this one sounds like it belongs on "This Time"), "These Arms" (Perhaps the best track", and of course, "Traveler's Lantern" (absolutely stupendous Kentucky Bluegrass). Dwight has a habit of throwing the occasional curve ball, and he closes out this album with a bravado-filled remake of "Only Want You More" titled "Maybe you Like it, Maybe you Dont". Always good to hear an artist having fun.....especially one who has consistently put out the finest Country Music in decades. You owe it to yourself to buy this one.

solid Dwight.......2003-10-17

A lot of critics would flog this album because they say it's not evolutionary or unique. Let me tell those pokes something. This *is* country music. This is his most consistent and enjoyable album since This Time. I listen to this without hitting the 'next' button on the CD player. And that is rare, even when you consider that it's packed with 13 well merited songs for your dollars.
"These Arms" and the title track are classic sounding Bakersfield Dwight Yoakam . "Traveler's Lantern" is about as close to quality bluegrass (an homage to his Kentucky roots?) as you will hear with contemporary Country (not to mention with a wonderful lyrical landscape). "That's Okay", "Curse", and "Things Change" will have you singing along unapologetically. And what would a Dwight project be without a weeper such as "I'll Just Take These" and a rocker like "Only You Want More"?

I can't believe how overlooked this album is in his catalog. Dwight and Pete Anderson get all due respect from me whenever they put someting on platter. Great job, guys!

An outstanding collection of original songs.......2003-08-25

At the time Dwight recorded this album, people could be forgiven for thinking that Dwight had run out of ideas - after all, he'd recorded a covers album and a Christmas album, which was predominately covers. With this album, Dwight proved that he could still write and sing brilliant original songs. As ever, Dwight's traditionally based country music has a rock edge that appeals to a wider audience while still appealing to most traditional country fans. Only the most diehard traditionalists could fail to appreciate Dwight's music. The overall feel of this album is very upbeat.

Dwight grabs your attention from the opening Same fool and holds it until the closing Maybe you like it maybe you don't, singing his way through a selection of songs that are incredibly varied yet still sit comfortably together. Dwight's influences are many and varied but fans of Buck Owens, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley will all hear echoes of their music in this album. Of course, Dwight's hillbilly vocal style combined with Pete Anderson's brilliant producing make his music unmistakeable for any other.

Dwight makes a rare incursion into bluegrass territory on Traveller's lantern, on which Ralph Stanley plays banjo. As Dwight had already appeared as a guest on Ralph's Clinch mountain country album, this was no surprise. Judged on this effort, it would be great to hear Dwight do a whole bluegrass album.

Dwight has recorded many outstanding albums (and one or two duds) but this is certainly one of the best albums Dwight has ever recorded and my may well be the best of the lot.

Underrated Yoakam classic.......2003-06-02

I don't know why the buzz around this album faded so quickly (even as "Things Change" managed more radio airplay than usual for Yoakam in these pop-country climes). But I find this to be one of the very finest of Yoakam's works -- right up with "This Time" and "If There was a Way." Even "Tomorrow's Sounds Today" ended up being more critically acclaimed strangely. I don't think any of Yoakam's albums have been as varied sonically with as much consistency of tone and theme or been as respectful of the past without sounding like re-treads. The title track is as good a sweet country song as you are likely to find anywhere, and are the best lyrics Yoakam has ever penned. The rest of the album ranges from catchy, driving melodies "Listen" to toe-tapping two-steps like "These Arms" and "That's Ok." "Things Change" and "Yet to Succeed" are classics of their particular sub-genres, even as they subvert those expectations in clever ways.

All in all, this is a largely overlooked gem. Fans of Dwight Yoakam will be thrilled and engrossed in the album, which features some familiar Yoakam-sounds and some new directions and some truly stellar lyrics. Newcomers to alt.country, rockabilly, classic country, and/or the Bakersfield sound are in for a treat, and couldn't find a better, more listenable introduction to all those genres (and more).

Do yourself a favor, and if you overlooked this release, go back and pick it up. It just might be my favorite out of every single Dwight Yoakam record out there. Which is saying a whole lot.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

This music is about an F to an F minus!
The singing is awful...it's a mumbled up mess. She needs to learn how to pronounce words because I can't tell what she's saying when it's all run together. I don't know how the hell she made any money or sold any of these junky albums. Waste of money!

James Taylor has cast a large shadow over today's country hit-makers, but for the most part, Nashville's earnest young troubadours more closely resemble such watered-down Taylor imitators as Dan Fogelberg or J.D. Souther than the man himself. Bruce Robison, the long tall Texan who married Kelly Willis, does one of the best country impersonations of Taylor because he understands the value of understatement. On his sophomore album, Robison fills his lyrics with so many visual details and gives his folkie melodies such a relaxed flow that he can afford a low-key, seductive vocal delivery, trusting the songs to take care of themselves. His subject matter--a waitress in love with a Vietnam soldier, a guy who wants to be more than a best friend to a woman, a giddy newlywed groom, a lonely man on the road--is well worn, and, except for one Western swing tune, the music has few traces of honky-tonk, but it is elegant singer/songwriter pop in the best Taylor tradition. --Geoffrey Himes

The brilliance of Bruce Robison's talent as a songwriter isn't always matched by his low-key delivery. He delivers his visions as keenly drawn four-minute musical novellas, but often undersells the intricate pictures with folk-styled recordings that leave larger stars to bring the songs to wider acclaim. No such problem this time out, as Robison steps up to a more electric sound without losing his singer-songwriter soul.

In "Travelin' Soldier" he renders youth-shattering loss with heartbreaking imagery and a haunting chorus that culminates on a seamless blend of classical strings, pedal steel, and harmony vocals from wife Kelly Willis. As fine as The Dixie Chicks cover may be, it can't match this version for storytelling. Robison's songs of marriage capture the exultation of love's bond ("Just Married" - performed at brother Charlie's marriage to Dixie Chick Emily Erwin) as well as the thornier realities of weddings ("Emotionally Gone"). He ranges from introspective ballads ("What Did You Think") to Texas-flavored honky-tonk ("The Good Life," "Red Letter Day") to electrified country road songs, and shifts effortlessly from the folky style of James Taylor to the rockier sounds of Steve Earle all while retaining a distinct lyrical voice.

Bruce Robison knows how to deliver!.......2002-08-07

In all honesty, Bruce Robison is probably the BEST country singer/songwriter living today. His music winds its way through your ears and into your heart...every song on this album is unforgettable and unbelievable, but I must restrict myself to just a few right now. The rest shall be an enticing mystery...

"Drivin' All Night Long" kicks the album off, a mournful tune of trying desperately to reunite with a loved one. "Just Married" tells of a marriage going down the drain, and "Red Letter Day" is a country-rockin' song of the blues ("It's a red letter day for the blues"). "Travelin' Soldier" is much better here than the Dixie Chicks' and Ty England's versions. It is probably the standout track, of a soldier going to war and those back home who love him. "What Did You Think" is typical Bruce Robison, a ballad of love and frustration. And the final song, the title track, is a good "road song"; a man who just doesn't belong in Nashville...or anywhere else.

His brother sings, his sister-in-law sings, but Bruce Robison stands alone. His talent is matched by few in the alternative country style, and his voice and lyrics are classic. Bruce Robison knows how to deliver a good CD...and "Long Way Home From Anywhere" is one of the best of them.

this is a very good album from an honest ,sincere singer/songwriter........i love every song,especially "trouble"......bruce reminds me kinda of james taylor.....it is hard to beleive that he and charlie are brothers

This is Bruce Robison's third cd, if you don't count the first release of wrapped, which contained 2 tracks not available on the one available at amazon.com. This is great stuff, a true "must have" no matter what kind of music you prefer. If this is too mellow for you try his brother Charlie.

John Schnieder played Bo Duke in the original TV series of The Dukes Of Hazzard. Another part of Schnieder's career in the entertainment field, however was singin', country singin' that is, and what better for going from a country character to a country singer. I heard one of his songs way back in the 1980s and it was a cover of "It's Now Or Never" and I thought that he sounded to "opera" - this was the terminology I used when I was was a kid. Anyway, I liked what I heard here on this album better.

As for what I was referring to in saying "less suburbian non-sense" was simply that the songs here sound more like country songs than songs I hear nowadays in which sound too much like something I would expect from Suburbia, SUV's, Cellphones, Working 9 - 5 in an office? Sounds more like city life with a bit of twang. Well I guess I can't complain when the city starts developing out into the country.

It's sad that Dokken's image forced them into that dreaded hair-band category, because they've always been more talented than most of the groups of that era. Despite major lineup changes--original bassist Jeff Pilson has been replaced by Barry Sparks and former Europe guitarist John Norum has stepped in for Reb Beach--the band has retained much of their signature sound. Don Dokken likes to work with fiery guitarists who counter his soothing vocals and melodies, and he has again found that complementary balance. Long Way Home picks up the back-to-basics style of their 1999 release, Erase the Slate. Diehards will be delighted with the heavy "Under the Gun," as it sounds like an outtake from Under Lock and Key. The band goes deeper on the midtempo "Everybody Needs (To Be with Someone)," which has a touch of Beatles-esque pop. Of course there are ballads, and the pretty "Goodbye My Friend," intertwining acoustic guitars and piano, stands out as one of the album's strongest cuts, along with "There Was a Time," with its gorgeous harmonies and irresistible chorus. There's something here for every fan, and it all still sounds like Dokken. --Gail Flug

Not 80's Dokken - but still rockin'..........2006-11-03

I think I'm in the majority in saying that this album took some time to grow on me, but this is a very solid release. Let's get one thing out of the way - John Norum isn't George Lynch, nobody is. Norum realy isn't going to drop your jaw to the floor but he handles the guitars very well. If you are a fan of Dokken, this album has solid songs throughout - with some definite gems and Don's typical strong vocals.
Some of the highlights include: Sunless Days(classic Dokken), Everybody Needs(has kind of a trippy 60's/70's vibe to it), Goodbye My Friend(a good simple piano based ballad), Magic Road(straight ahead driving rocker) and Heart Full Of Soul(cover of the Yardbirds classic).
If your looking for 80's style Dokken this isn't it, but the songs are still solid and Don Dokken's vocals are some of the best to come from that era. If you are new to Dokken start with their earlier albums, but this is also worth a listen.

another sleeper.......2006-03-25

From what I've heard from John Norum, I was excited to hear he would be playing on this album. I don't know if Don was suppressing the guitar on this album or not, but John doesn't get a chance to shine. This is a total sleeper. Why does Don Dokken keep putting these psychedelic, Beatlesque sounding songs on his albums? Where did his voice go? It's so soft and meodic. Is it too much to ask for an album to rock? I've read the other reviews and, no, this album does not rock and its not a return to the classic Dokken sound. Some bands can progress and some cannot. Here, the latter holds true. He had such a powerhouse of players in Norum/Sparks that I thought this album would have some life to it. Sadly it has none. There are a couple of songs where the guitar takes off, but sadly it's in the final 3 seconds of the song ending and fading out. What the hell has happend to this band?

Something's Wrong Here..........2004-06-23

I've been a fan of Don Dokken for many years. I'm smart enough to know the truth. Don Dokken is why Dokken was and is successful, not George Lynch. George Lynch is and was a tremendous guitar player but the imperfections in his records since he left Dokken show how much Don brought to the table even excluding his tremendous vocals. Every Dokken record has been near perfect as Don demands. While this record might be produced to perfection, the material certainly falls short of the "p" word.

Many argue if Dokken was a hair band. Of course they were! You know what? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But, Dokken had a harder edge than the typical hair band. Songs like Tooth & Nail, Kiss of Death, and Heaven Sent are a bit intense for some of the more popular hair bands of the time. But, they were unmistakably Dokken and unmistakably melodic hard rock. There are only a few traces of this style on this record and I do stress a few.

Little Girl is a great song. It captures the feel of what Dokken was mixed with a Beatles style. Heart full of Soul is a short but sweet classic Dokken sounding song.

When I ripped this record into MP3's to add to my play list while I work online, those were the only two I bothered ripping. The rest of the record is lacking something. It has a bit of a gloomy feel that simply is boring or has potential to be a decent song but simply does not find the hook needed to make you sing along. The musicianship is good and Don sounds great when he isn't singing too mellow for the songs but there is, without question, something missing.

The album is worth buying to check out and judge for yourself. But, don't expect Under Lock & Key and don't expect a more recent Dokken classic like Erase the Slate. Expect Shadow Life part 2. It's sad to say but true. But, the sound clips to the new Dokken record "Hell to Pay" sound promising. So, keep an eye out for that record as well!

A Good Melodic Hard Rock Album.......2004-05-04

This is a long way from Dokken's prime material ("Under Lock & Key," "Tooth & Nail," "Back for the Attack), but after listening to it, I found myself enjoying it. Granted, it's not going to change the music world, nor will it show you something new, musically speaking, but several of the songs on this album are very well done.

I like to listen to albums when I go out jogging. I have to find an album to be at least half way decent before I'll set off on the road with it. To me, there's nothing worse than being two miles from home, saddled with a CD player loaded with a dull CD!

I found myself hitting the repeat button on "Sunless Days," "Little Girl," and "Goodbye My Friend" frequently. Great songs, great music. What's the problem with the harmonies being "Beatlesque"? I think this works great. In some ways it departs from Dokken's traditional pop-metal sound to a degree, but not by much. DOn's voice sounds as good as ever, and John Norum fills George Lynch and Reb Beach's shoes very well.

Three stars to me rates an album as good. This is definitely a good melodic hard rock album. One half is really good, while the other half is rather bland and faceless. If you've got the rest of the band's albums and you're a fan, this is worth checking out.

After playing with the Barnet and Kenton bands, I went straight to the Lighthouse All-Stars and from then on it was small groups. Furthermore, as I’m a composer and not an arranger-writer, I never had the desire to have my own band for the purpose of hearing my writing.”

The element of swing has long been key in Bud’s embodiment of musical values. In regard to the tunes, it’s not surprising he articulated firmly: “I definitely wanted swingin’ things as much as possible.” The charts were primed for swingfeel, indeed. In front of the band, Bud communicated a disposition of kinetic excitement. He was pumped up eager to swing!

The band was shored with some of L.A.’s best corps of players. It was outrageous in its profusion of excellence from the steaming rhythm section of Christian Jacob, Joel Hamilton and Kevin Kanner to the blazing horns. Throughout the high caliber performance, the heartfelt emotion and joie de vivre of the event was a perceptible ingredient. As Lanny Morgan has predicted: “I think Bud Shank fans will be thrilled. It’s a tremendous effort!”

Five Stars For Bud .......2006-06-17

Alto saxophonist/flautist Bud Shank is one of the top musicians in jazz, and has continued to develop a personal sound throughout his six decade career. One does not usually associate Shank with big bands, but he was a key member of Stan Kenton's Innovations Orchestra in the `50's and Kenton's L.A. Neophonic Orchestra in the `60's. So it was logical for Bud to lead a specially assembled big band at the L.A. Jazz's Institute's 40th Anniversary celebration of the Neophonic Orchestra in 2005. And it was equally logical for Graham Carter of Jazzed Media to record this concert, as he has at several other Ken Poston produced events.

The recorded results of this collaboration are heard on "Taking the Long Way Home", and they are superb. The band plays the challenging charts remarkably well considering the limited rehearsal time. The charts are generally of the bright and swinging variety, though we also get a medium slow blues -"Greasiness is Happening" - by Bob Cooper and a beautiful ballad by Mike Barone - "Starduster"- a tribute to Artie Shaw, which proves to be one of the memorable highlights of the CD. Barone also contributed the strong opener "Rosebud", plus the uptempo swinger "Lines Away". Bob Cooper arranged Shank's favored "Waltz for Debby"; Manny Albam the swinging "Night and Day"; and Shank the inventive "Night Has a Thousand Eyes." Tenor saxophonist Doug Webb shares solo space with Shank on the latter chart and Carl Saunders has solo space on "Limes Away."

But the main soloist is Shank who plays alto throughout and is in superlative form. He plays with incredible depth and swing on every track, and often with the vigor of a man much younger (Bud was 78 or 79 at the time of this recording). In fact, he often sounds like a man rediscovering his youth, such is the joy of his improvisations and his spoken parts. Bud also weaves his way impressively through the typically challenging and multi-faceted title piece by Bob Florence (who plays piano and conducts on this track). This 18 minute chart was commissioned by Bud's wife Linda in honor of Bud's 75th birthday. It is a major concert work which can be played only by the best musicians and handled by a major soloist like Shank. Indeed, it reminds one of the music which was written for the original Neophonic Orchestra. The applause which marks the end of this chart (and the concert) seems to include an equal amount of awe and joyous appreciation. With his performance on this CD, Bud Shank reaffirms his ranking with Phil Woods as one of the top two altoists in jazz today.

This well-recorded and highly recommended 68 minute CD invites and rewards repeated hearings. It is a great triumph for Bud Shank and another winner in the Jazzed Media catalogue. "Taking the Long Way Home" is the best CD I have heard so far in 2006.

AWESOME BLUES/ROCK GUITAR RIFFAGE........2007-02-26

The last reviewer (JOBAH) obviously hasn't done his homework and doesn't know what he's talking about. "Long Way Home" disc is an awesome blues/rock heavy guitar disc that features unreleased material and only one re:done track for the disc. Also it is their 8th release if you count their 1st two self-produced sought after independent releases. JOBAH needs to do the math and get with the program. The bottom line is that "Long Way Home" is a killer disc and if you dig Indigenous + Maton Nanji you need a copy of the "Long Way Home" disc your collection. Mato Nanji is carrying the blues/rock guitar torch brightly.

mbernocchi: It's "Mato" not "Nato" ...and this appears to be a "best of" disc, so if you really like it, then I would definitely recommend getting all of the CD's they have available.

The following comments are directed at the editorial "review" on the main page: [1] This is not their 8th disc. It is the 6th, if you can even call it that. [2] The "reviewer" appears to be very enamored with the band but is not very familiar with their material. This is a "best of" disc with songs from the other studio releases. If he actually owned them, he'd know that. [3] This is a not a "follow up" disc to their self-titled 2003 release. It is an interim release before the 2006 release of "Chasing the Sun." [4] No doubt this is a smokin' band and a great guitarist, but let's keep the facts straight so no one spends money on a disc that contains songs they may already own ($30-$45 for a copy??? Puh-LEEEEZE!! I wouldn't be surprised if the editorial review was written by one of the rip-off sellers that are advertising these insane prices). To be sure, this would be a great introduction to Indigenous for newbies but I'd readily recommend buying "Chasing the Sun" and "Indigenous" over this. You will not be disappointed... and it'll be a heckuva lot cheaper!! I gave this a one star rating because of this, but the music is definitely 5 star material.

Hard & blue..........2006-05-28

I have to say that I have always been an Indigenous fan and I have been patiently waiting for them to put out in the market some new materials. As soon as I found out that this CD was available I didn't hesitate a second and I bought it. I am glad I did! Even if it is quite a short album (only 35 minutes) it worth every penny you pay. Classic rock-blues Indigenous style played hard and well at the same level, from my point of view, of the great Live at Pachyderm Studio. Mato Nanji is in a fantastic form and he constantly delivers from the first note of the opening killer "Well You Know" to the last note of the closing song. However it is when it gets to song n. 5, a slow minor key 8 minutes plus blues, that Mato Nanji takes no prisoners and he delivers one of the best solo I have ever had the chance to listening to! Absolutely brilliant! But Mato is not just a great guitarist he is also an excellent singer too and his singing is strong and soulful throughout the album. Excellent production and a very good recording quality for a 5+ star CD.

A "Gatemouth" must have!.......2001-02-19

Any cd which starts out with Blues Power featuring Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown on vocals, Eric Clapton on guitar, and Leon Russell playing piano and doing vocals is worth a listen to. Long Way Home continues to impress with every track.

Brown demonstrates his musical skills, and careful choice of music. His all star cast includes Clapton, Russell, Ry Cooder, John Loudermilk (who wrote Tobacco Road and does the vocals on the cd)Sonny Landreth and Maria Muldaur. Great tracks besides Blues Power are Don't Think Twice with Maria Muldaur doing vocals with Gatemouth, Mean and Evil with Leon Russell sharing the stage with Gatemouth and of course Tobacco Road.

This is a great cd for a blues or rock fan.

Smooth.......2000-10-01

Gatemouth has gathered a collection of todays great talents, and laid down some smooth tracks. Joined by the likes of Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Sonny Landreth, Leon Russell and Jim Keltner, the old master reigns in the egos for an easy feel and style. Redoing R & B classics such as "Blues Power," J.J.Cale's "Don't Cry Sister," and "Tobacco Road," Gatemouth shows it's not what you play, but how you play it. This old soul has a lot to give, and for $14 bucks it's a steal. Enjoy!

Every song is a perfect gem with the heavenly mix of her vocals and his guitar. This disk seems to transcend jazz and enter into the arena of pure music. Anyone who wants to hear something real will love it.

Spiritual messages more uplifting than many in books.......2001-09-07

Everybody else is reviewing this as a terrific jazz CD, which it is, but I'm going to review it for the spiritual content of Patti's lyrics. You will find more inspirational messages in this CD than you'll find in most inspirational and motivational books.

The first two songs, "Taking the Long Way Home" and "Ready to Love" are admittedly love songs, but compared with most of today's love songs, they speak of a real type of love without the pain and confusion of most that you'll find in rock, pop, and country.

"Thank You" is a joyful and happy song, exemplifying the principle of recognizing and showing gratitude for all the good one receives.

"Take This Feeling" expresses the joy of living in the moment without regret for the past or concern for the future.

"Song for the Souls That Go Before (From the Hearts Left Behind)" is one of the strongest messages of it's kind that I have come across, comparable only to the James Dillet Freeman book, LOVE IS STRONG AS DEATH. It's especially meaningful to me two years after having lost my mother and having recently discovered that my son's mother has an inoperable cancer. Thanks so much to Patti, for this message.

"Lifeline" has to come from Patti's heart. She's a soul that has to sing, and this song tells us all of the person she is which is important to know.

"You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" is possibly the most deep reaching of all these lyrics. If I were a minister, I would require all couples to listen to this song before marriage.

"Path To Peace" comes across as if Patti were speaking directly to the listener, with such meaningful words.

If one has been listening to, and following the lyrics, one is ready for a break, a time to think and reflect, and so Tuck's instrumental, "Early Morning Music Box", is perfectly timed.

And so we come to "This Light This Life", Patti's concluding spiritual statement worded in such a way that she could be talking personally with the listener.

So however one listens to this CD, as a jazz recording or as a series of spiritual messages from one heart to another, this is indeed a five star recording.

Taking the long way home.......2000-12-18

Listening to Tuck use his third arm and Patti reaching from within her soul, you want to take the long road so you can listen over and over. The best of my spirit is enrich more.

I defer to all the other T&P fans who say this isn't their best. If that's the case, I want to hear the best. This is the most beautiful jazz CD I've listened to in years. The songs are carefully selected - try to find one that doesn't mean something to you - and Patti's glorious voice, Tuck's guitar... in the deepest, truest part of me, I wish I could cuddle up somewhere warm, sip a glass of wine, shut my eyes, and listen to this magic forever.

I waited anxiously for this CD to be released. I can say with certainty that there are only two tracks that are worth your time. The others are drown out versions of older not so great T&P hits. Save your money and get the greatest hits!
