Wise words and cool tunes.......2007-03-28
I guess the most obvious way to differentiate Harry Manx from his peers is his use of Indian instruments, and in paricular the Mohan Veena. Well, actually what's unique and very refreshing is the way he integrates those sounds into a fusion of Blues and Americana that remind me of some of the other artists I love, but also stands out from them.
For all the exoticism of the instrumentation, Harry's songs are actually pretty accessible, and like the best songs are a bit mysterious in their actual meaning but give you a feeling that he's really saying something. Don't Take His Name Away is a terrific song about life and death and memory. I wonder who it's about.
Another standout song is A Single Spark, which has the trademark Indian sound mixed with an emotive blues sound and an intriguing, memorable lyric.
There's not a bad song on the album, though It Takes a Tear, a duet with a singer who's not really interesting enough, comes closest to being one you might want to skip past.
I like the production, even though it sounds at times almost too clean and bright for Blues. The production favours the sound of the Indian instruments, and the couple of instrumentals using those instruments sound fantastic.
On the whole, one of the best albums I've heard for some time. I can see I'll be enjoying this one for years to come.
Love it and Love Harry Manx.......2007-01-10
I love this CD, I love Harry Manx, he is so blusey and his voice and music is undescrible, I recommend this CD for every blues lover and sitar music lover. Highly recommended.
exotic, yet strangely timeless.......2006-05-17
While most musicians are content to work within the accepted boundaries of their chosen style, lap-slide guitarist Harry Manx likes to color way outside the lines. His crayons? Soulful, raspy vocals, poetic lyrics, and the whining drones and mysterious melisma of Indian music. In addition to picking Hawaiian-style flat-top à la David Lindley, Ben Harper, or Kelly Joe Phelps, Manx plays the mohan veena-a 20-string archtop developed by Indian slide wizard Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. East/West fusions can sometimes sound forced or awkward, but Manx-who studied with Bhatt for five years-dodges that bullet. On Mantras for Madmen, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, tamboura, tabla, and haunting female voices swirl seamlessly around intricate slide melodies, creating an exotic, yet strangely timeless sound. Drawing from blues, ragas, and the story-telling heritage of British Isles folk music, Manx conjures songs that are as bewitching as they are unique.
another level for Harry.......2006-01-20
I've been listening to Manx' blues ever since I caught him in concert here in New Mexico. "Road Ragas" being my favorite until this new release which really showcases his talent at writing songs, let alone the unique Indian instrument (I would write the name but would slaughter the spelling-a sitar/guitar cross)he plays them to. Don't let Mantra in the title sway you into thinking this is true sanskrit mantra (which I also listen to) but I think it is his way of honoring his unique East/West style and he does have a terrific sense of humor which also prevails in his songs. Good go Harry-come back to New Mexico soon!

Real version.......2006-02-23
This is the original version. It's soooo much better than the one on the Immaculate Collection with that TIRED piano break.
A CLASSIC SONG, A GREAT PRICE.......2005-05-28
Who cares if this cd comes in a plain brown cardboard wrapper? I certainly don't. And four bucks is a fair price to pay for a two song single, especially considering that this is the DEFINITIVE original version of Into the Groove, one of Madonna's best, most induring ( and endearing ) dance classics. A deceptively simple song, with tossed off lyrics, but something about it just gels unbelievably. This song STILL sounds fresh, after 20 years. The version of Into the Grooove you get on her Immaculate Collection disc is remixed and simply butchered by Shep Pettibone, the music is sped up and the whole thing is edited down to just over 3 minutes. Here is the original 4 minute plus version. Great to find this one still in print, I can add it to my collection to burn myself my own Immaculate Collection of Madonna's greatest hits. Buy it before it's gone, and you have to pay the ridiculous import price.
essential Madonna dance classic.......2004-08-17
If you want to hear the original single version of "Into The Groove", here it is! noticeably different from Immaculate Collection's Q-Sound Remix (4:09). While opinions comparing the two versions vary, I'd say having them both in your Madonna collection wouldn't hurt, after all it's one of her essential dance classics! It's housed in recycled cardboard slipcase with a hole in the middle resembling vinyl record and does not come with a picture sleeve (typical of Backtrax series cd singles).
1. Into The Groove (Single Version) 4:42
2. Dress You Up (Album Version) 4:01
The song is classic. What you receive is not........2004-02-29
If you are looking to receive this CD in a case with artwork, then DO NOT PURCHASE this item. You will receive the CD, however it only will come in a cardboard slip cover.
Classic Madonna Song.......2002-12-05
Simply one of the best songs from the decade we know as the 1980's, Madonna's "Into the Groove" first played on airwaves in the summer of 1985 when she made her big Hollywood screen debut in the cult classic "Desperately Seeking Susan." The song, which was played twice in the film (scene at club where Madonna meets Gary Glass and the end credits) became one of that decades best anthems. Now for the first time many Madonna fans in the USA can listen to the original version, which is not available on any of her albums ("You Can Dance" has a terrible remixed version and "The Immaculate Collection" has a short, radio edit version.
Nostalgic to an extent, "Into the Groove" still remains a classic Madonna song.

Album Description
Ethno-trance World-beat - From smooth jazz to funky jungle, from the vast Australian outback to the smoldering cyber-clubs of Bombay. Trip-out with this groove journey into the modern world of the ancient didgeridoo enhanced with drums, guitar, sax, throat singing, bass, synthesizer, sitar, native American flutes and other multicultural instruments.
Customer Reviews:
Nice sampling.......2006-08-06
I really enjoyed this collection of tracks from some of the top didgeridoo players in the world. There is a nice variety of styles and approachs to using the ancient instrument in modern and sometimes not so modern ways. I think in many ways, this CD would be an excellent introduction to the didgeridoo for those curious about it's use in contemporary music.
magical fusion.......2004-03-10
What a great fusion of a variety of instruements and musical styles. Every track is great. This is the best cd I have bought in along while. Drums, sax, flute, didgeriedo and others to make a mesmerising collection of world music. You won't find music like this on popular radio. Can't say enough about this great collection of music.

Not enough here.......2002-05-20
There's, literally, 1 incredible track on here: Palm Skin Productions's "The Beast (Autechre Mix)". The rest of the record just sort of meanders apologetically under the nom de plume of "Ambient music". Just because the music is supposed to be smooth doesn't mean it should bore, and this record sort of comes off like the smooth jazz of the genre.
Except for that one track. That one track almost makes the whole trip worthwhile. If you can find it used for under 10 bucks, get it. If you can find the track on any other album, get it.
Check out this beautiful compilation of subliminal groove.......1999-02-12
I have 2, 3, and 4 in this series and this is definitely the most addictive of the three. This and Torch Song's "Into the Unknown Region" are definitely two of the must haves of this genre. You can easily forget that the CD is playing. Like lining your walls and floors with soft pillows.... Where can I find more Ambient Groove this good?

Customer Reviews:
Awesome blues!.......2005-08-22
This disc is one of the most stellar live compilation blues CD's released in a LONG LONG time. Everything about it says that Bott painstakingly labored over every aspect of this package -- especially the interesting stories that personalize each song, all the players, and the venues where many of the songs were recorded. If you are a fan of the blues, you'll be blown away by these tracks! Though the tracks are in fact from several different analog sources (mainly cassette tapes) kudos to Bott on having the courage to put out such diverse recordings. They show a true understanding of what 'the blues' is all about -- how live and improvised performances are integral to its tradition and history. If you are a real blues fan, then there is no way on earth this CD will let you down! That being said, fans of seriously good music played by exceptional musicians will also enjoy this CD.
If you like what has become the norm -- watered-down "slick" recordings with no soul, feeling or improvisation -- then don't buy this CD! But, if you want to step out of the box , take a journey side-stepping back in time to places where music was live and being created on the spot, then give this CD a listen. It promises to bring you into the very rooms where these performances went down. You'll feel as if you were there sipping a beer, downing a shot and cheering on the band with your friends by your side!
I want more .......2005-08-14
Throughout all his years of gigs drumming with Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers and most recently the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimi Bott, like so many other musicians, has a vast collection of his bootleg live performances. For this CD, Jimi has gone into his private collection for some of his finest vintage recordings. There are seven special moments with Mighty Flyers from 1987 to 1992 to accurately capture all the raw energy of that nightly West coast blues explosion. On the first song, he's nailing a sharp, double shuffle behind Rod's chromatic work on "The Eliminator." This is a brilliant reminder of how Rod starts off every show with high flyin', over the top energy. Bott's next song, "That's What You Do to Me," is a rare Mighty Flyer treat from 1987 with Junior Watson on guitar. This song comes from one of Bott's first gigs with the Flyers, a Battle of the Harmonicas in San Francisco. The crowd noise picked up by the tiny recorded adds to the authenticity.
No Flyer show was complete without Bott and Honey doin' a brilliant drum piano surge. Here, Jimi shares two of those moments. Instead of pressing songs we all know, Bott asked Honey for something unique and she responded with "The Bumble Boogie/The Nutcracker" medley. It's pure classical meets boogie woogie with an Alex Schultz guitar bridge holdin' it together. Bott and Honey recreate the big bands of the 1930's on Louis Prima's "Sing, Sing, Sing." And Alex Schultz's "Jam Up" is a favorite to be played over and over because it perfectly captures the spontaneity of the Mighty Flyers. the final Flyers' song ends the CD with the Piazza's deepest blues, "Ah'w Baby" from 1990. The two Fabulous Thunderbird tunes with Kim Wilson show off Bott's drums on the world-wide stage. He include his own song "Cheap Thrills" from 1996 with Kid Ramos, and another, "I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled, and Crazy," from 2002 with Ramos and new T-Bird guitarist Kirk Fletcher. Bott's very personal liner notes offer intimate looks into the music and people that have shaped him. Remember that these songs were recorded live, so while there is no studio perfection, there is that live passion and energy we fans go out night after night to be part of. Can't wait for Vol. 2.
Live Jive R&B.......2005-06-08
Every one that has listened to it has ended up buying it, this is a whammin- jammim collection.
Skip It!.......2005-06-03
While I don't like to trash another musician's work, I must say in all honesty that this CD is neither worth the $16 or the two to three week wait. In hindsight, I wished I had heeded the warnings of "raw analog recordings" and "never before released tracks," Generally, those are code words for noisy, inconsistent and otherwise poor sound quality not otherwise suitable for release. In some instances, the quality of this CD is lower than some bootlegs. This CD fits the rule that if the songs are good enough to be released they would have been, long ago. The crowd's chatter and idle conversation during the performance are very audible and distracting. Moreover, the sound quality varies from track to track due in part to the fact that the CD picks up songs recorded at different times and in different places. Jim Bott, apparently needing a buck, lists his telephone number on the back as 1-800-BUY-MY-CD. I gave him $16. Don't make the same mistake.

I HAVE THIS RECORD, IT ROCKS I DONT PLAY IT NO MORE. ITS FRAMED ON MY ROOM WALL. BUT ITS A MUST HAVE FOR ALL MADONNAS TRUE FANS. BUY IT.....
Get Into The Groove With This Club Classic!.......2003-04-25
With the release of her seventh single in the UK, Madonna would finally get her first No.1. The song was Into The Groove and spent four weeks atop the UK singles chart in July 1985. The song has, like many of Madonna's 1980's hits, gone on to become a true classic. The song spent 14 weeks on the chart in the UK and, while not as successful in the US, is loved by most Madonna fans as one of her biggest and catchiest pop hits.
Into The Groove begins with a very bouncy and catchy beat that runs the length of the song. It is more dominant at the beginning of the song becoming more quiet as the song progresses, but it is always there reminding you why you love the song so much and why you never grow tired of hearing it. Madonna then begins her singing with the chorus. This makes a change for usual Madonna songs which begins with the verse, then go onto the chorus. There are a few verses in this song which begin differently, but end the same. The first verse is "Music can be such a revelation, dancing around you feel a sweet sensation. We might be lovers if rhythm's right, I hope this feeling never ends tonight. Only when I'm dancing can I feel this free. At night, I lock the doors where no one else can see. I'm tired of dancing here all by myself, tonight I wanna dance with someone else!" The lyrics are very simple and fun - the type that usually make Madonna's big hits. Examples of this are Material Girl and Like A Virgin. Both were massive hits and have such simple lyrics and joyous melodies that make them become classics. The choruses swing by, as do the verses and a funky piano solo that enhances the quality of the song. The song then gradually fades out leaving the listener with a sense of fulfilment and joy that forces you to press the 'repeat' button on your CD player.
Into The Groove was a massive hit and was taken from Madonna's debut acting performance in the smash hit comedy Desperately Seeking Susan. Therefore, the video to the song features clips of Madonna in the film acting wild, causing a stir amongst whoever she encounters and generally enjoying herself partying at clubs. The video reflects the mood of the song in every way. And for this, we are grateful that Madonna produced such a fantastic song - a true club classic that, even now in its classic status, will continue to capture the hearts and souls of millions who encounter it - just like Madonna does.
Really good.......2003-04-04
There is an exploration of the existential in Madonna's work now that shows a definitive maturity. I think that the ability that sets Madonna apart the most is not simply being someone who manipulates media well but in truth two things: One, she's not a big fan of TV or indulging in the media, beign a puppet to it in watching it. Two, Marianne Williamson talks about that people who become legends do so because they tap into the concept of what the human consciousness is available to, needing to develop and that rings within all of us. It is that work that interests the rest of us.
This imported maxi-single also contains another of Madonna's earliest hits "Everybody" as well as "Shoo-Be-Do" which is a song found on her "Like a Virgin" album. My main reason in getting this single was for "Into the Groove," because it provides me great memories of it playing from my radio during the long hot summers in New York City. Nostalgic to an extent, "Into the Groove" still remains a classic Madonna song.
A Must For All Madonna Fans........2001-05-23
This UK CD single contains the original Into The Groove version which does not appear in any album, except the European version of Like A Virgin. This single is a must have for any Madonna fan's collection. Besides the memorable 80's hit, Into The Groove, you get Shoo-Be-Doo, aother wonderful Madonna bubble-gum tune, and Everybody, another dance song, in it's entire version. Buy this single, it is totally worth it !

It's solid but not stellar.......2000-06-02
...I didn't expect much, until I actually saw the artists:Fila Brazilla, Kid Loco, Sofa Surfers, Neotropic and more. Hey, apossible surprise in order?
The album calls it a compilation of "downtempo grooves, electronic lullabies, and ambient soundscapes." You wouldn't guess it from "Dali," which sounds like dinner music for a blaxploiation film. Two tracks later, Fila Brazilla come through with the excellent "Simple Man," an example on how to add some kick with catchy kinda-breakbeats, samples, tempo variety, and knob twiddles. Innervisions and (especially) Kid Loco turn in sublime tunes, as well as the aforementioned Sofa Surfers (with the help of a Richard Dorfmeister mix). Special Project's "One More" tries to be too many things, and would work better on an instrumental hip hop album. Neotropic offers a brief tease and a nice, simple ambient piece on two tracks, and Basement Jaxx, pre-Remedy, offer up a bad synth and winds piece as the closer.
So this wasn't a revelation after all. Still, you get a stand-out track by Fila Brazilla and a respectable amount of tunes around it. This won't move mountains or put you in a state of aural bliss, but it's just good enough to recommend.
Fantastic ambient trip.......2000-02-25
Not much to say, just listen to it! It will take you in amazing dimensions.....Bought by chance, now a little jewel in my CD collection....
A transient, lucid journey........1999-08-14
I am not a huge fan of ambient, but this album, a chance purchase for me is a real delight. Soothing, enthralling, and enchanting...this is a great album for anyone who wants a good break into the world of ambient.

Album Description
Marlon Saunders, the soulful voice behind 2003's Enter My Mind, hailed by Billboard, Vibe and Straight No Chaser as one of the best soul recordings in recent years, gives us the greatly anticipated A Groove So Deep: The Live Sessions. Unlike most live albums, A Groove So Deep is not a recording of a performance before a screaming audience. For this project, Marlon decided to bring his band, Mood Control, together for a series of sessions in which the musicians experimented with different approaches to favorites from his critically-acclaimed debut release, Enter My Mind, and songs written especially for the new project. From over 14 hours of recorded material, Marlon selected just over 70 minutes to become A Groove So Deep: The Live Sessions.
Customer Reviews:
The power and at the same time the magic of A Groove So Deep is.......2006-08-12
A Groove So Deep: the live sessions is Marlon Saunders' second solo album. His first critically acclaimed album "Enter My Mind" was realeased in 2003. A Groove So Deep is a selection of live recordings where Marlon and his band Mood Control go as deep into the groove as their musical spirits and wits take them. And that's very deep in the heritage of black music.
A Groove So Deep contains thirteen tracks full of jazz, soul, funk and emotions. Five of them you'll recognize from "Enter My Mind" while Love Philosophy has previously been recorded with Jazzhole. The track Declaring Love might remind some of you of a superb edition of Soul and The City ,a column Marlon writes for SaveOurSoul.nl, which also has a spoken version for the radio broadcast. The power and at the same time the magic of A Groove So Deep is that it creates the feeling that Marlon and his wonderful musicians of Mood Control are giving a private concert, because you do not hear a screaming live audience on this CD.The only one(s) screaming and singing along will be you and your company while listening to these live sessions.(TA)

Wow!.......2006-03-29
This guy is for real. I came up listening to all the great soul singers of the 60's and 70's and none of them has anything on Marlon Saunders. I have the studio album, Enter My Mind and it is great, but I am partial to well recorded live albums and this CD makes me want to go hear him live right away. I hope somebody brings him to Seattle soon. He is not well known out here so I would recommend he try to play something like Bumbershoot, the Labor Day music festival where a lot people would be able to hear him. A Groove So Deep and Coolin' are my favorite tracks on the CD but they are all slammin'. His band Mood Control sounds great too, real musicians.
A Rare find.......2005-10-25
I love Marlon Saunders and I especially love this new CD. I loved his first CD Enter My MInd but this live joint is amazing. I saw Marlon live with his band a few weeks ago at the Cutting Room in NYC with Angela Johnson. It was so amazing to see him live. He is so beautiful and sexy and he sang my favorite song Inspiration! If you want to hear good soul music then look no further. He is soul music's biggest star. I love you Marlon.
What a Soul CD should sound like!!!!.......2005-09-05
Marlon Saunders-Groove So Deep just raise the bar even higher Live Real Soul Music is slowly coming back..support this cd and you will truly enjoy every cut
Soul music with real musicians!.......2005-08-14
I loved Marlon Saunders' Enter My Mind, but A Groove So Deep is on another level. This is some raw soul music, where the whole band is together at the same time, not performing for an audience, but vibin' together as musicians. No matter how many times you listen to it, you will hear something new--somethin' cool the vocalists do creating background harmonies, somethin' funky happenin' on the bass or drums, somethin' jazzy on the piano, flute or sax, just the right rhythm on the congas--It may sound strange to say about a contemporary R & B recording, but Groove is actually exciting to listen to...This one's worth the money, because you'll want to play it again and again...just to see what you missed the last time.
