The guy was damn ingenious with a guitar, but not half as industrious as the folks who've packaged and repackaged his posthumous material. First Rays of the New Rising Sun, however, is an attractive assortment of "spiritual, very earthy" late recordings that surfaced in the '70s via The Cry of Love, Crash Landing, Rainbow Bridge, and War Heroes. Hendrix appeared to be in transition between flamboyant showman and serious musician personas at the time (meaning his work, had he lived, might have been twice as meritorious and half as fun), and that makes many of these tracks all the more interesting. --Steven Stolder

JIMI'S FINAL ALBUM, FINALLY RELEASED HIS WAY !.......2007-03-20

After guitar god Jimi Hendrix died, he released more albums than he did when he was still alive. Control of Jimi's music fell into the hands of attorneys who saw the opportunity to turn a fast buck, and quickly released this excellant music chopped up into several different albums (Rainbow Bridge, Cry of Love, War Heroes, etc.,etc.). After much litigation and several years, control of Jimi's music was given to Jimi's father and sister. They formed the Experience Hendrix record label and went to work. The first task at hand was to put together First Rays of the New Rising Sun, Jimi's title to the double-album he was putting the finishing touches on when he died. Through interviews with the producer, engineers, and musicians who worked on the project, they finished the album according to Jimi's specifications. The music on the album is sophisticated, energetic, and precise. Hendrix fans will recognize most of these songs. Freedom, Angel, Dolly Dagger, Roomful of Mirrors, Isabella, Hey Baby(New Rising Sun), and the beautiful Drifting are all highlights. Like The Beatles leaving behind the cute mop-top Beatlemania era with Rubber Soul and Revolver, Jimi seemed to be breaking away from the psycadelic wild-man theatrics of his early days, and getting down to the business of creating serious music with a conscious. You will find some of Jimi's best songs, vocals, and guitar playing on the aptly titled First Rays of the New Rising Sun. No Jimi Hendrix fan should be without it.

Cry Of Love.......2007-02-16

Back in the 70's I wore out my vinyl copy of Hendrix's Cry Of Love Album. Songs like, Drifting and My Friend have been floating around in my head for all these years and I had tried to find a copy of CRY Of Love on cd several times with no luck. Well, here it is under a different name and with some additional songs ! These are some of the best cuts Jimi Hendrix ever recorded and the music sounds as good today as it did when I was a kid. Absolutely great stuff.

A must-have. It's as simple as that.......2006-12-20

This is the geniune article, folks: The tapes that Jimi was working on before his untimely death. Seventeen songs, and all but two (Beginnings and Stepping Stone) are must-haves for any serious Hendrix fan. Of course, it's got the lovely, oft-covered ballad Angel, which has quickly become a Hendrix standard and is one of his best songs, perfect lyrics, perfect melody, perfect instrumentation... it's all there. A masterpiece. And it's not even the best song on the disc - I'd go with either the title track or Drifting, a low-key ballad that is one of Hendrix's more underrated. Rockers In From the Storm; Freedom; Izabella and Roomfull of Mirrors are perfectly complimented by the ballads (Night Bird Flying; the aforementioned Angel; Drifting) and the funk songs (Ezy Rider, another favorite; Dolly Dagger). And then there's the hilarious, wah-wah'ed Belly Button Window. Hendrix's last recordings have been repackaged several times, but this is the one to go to - it's probably what Hendrix would've approved of, unlike the Allen Douglass releases. Hendrix's music was taking an interesting turn before his premature death. If you're curious as to how a fourth studio album would've turned out (and really, who isn't?), this should satisfy you.

Wonderful Treasure.......2006-07-17

This is a treasure chest full of early unreleased Jimi. These songs really show the heart and soul of Jimi Hendrix as a thoughtful songwriter. As always, the guitar is wonderful and amazing; but there's something peaceful in even the most scorching of solos on this disc. Enjoy this wonderful collection of songs that illustrates Jimi's command of the blues and how he was able to stay true to it's roots or help it blossom into a rock 'n' roll explosion.

Jimi's Version.......2006-05-13

"In 1994, Hendrix's own handwritten track selection for First Ray surfaced and was reprinted in the french magazine Folk & Rock (November 1994). Surprisingly it was never used when attempts were made to complete the unfinished project in the years that followed. Hendrix only completed a song list for three sides of the double LP, and wasn't sure where to place the track "Night Bird Flying". With a darker-colored pen, he seemed to indicate that it should be the second song on side A. Hendrix's track selection for First Ray of the New Rising Sun was:

Side A: Dolly Dagger, Night Bird Flying, Room Full of Mirrors, Belly Button Window, Freedom.

Side B: Easy Rider, Astro Man, Drifting, Straight Ahead.

Side C: Drifter's Escape, Comin' Down Hard On Me, Beginnings, Cherokee Mist, Angel."

The above and any other quotes in this post are taken from the book, "Black Gold the Lost Archives of Jimi Hendrix" by Steven Roby.

The album is refered to above as First Ray instead of First Rays because Jimi at first was going to call it First Ray of the New Rising Sun. Another quote from Black Gold:

"Billy Cox worked on the unfinished album, and recalled the time when Hendrix asked him about the correct wording: "He asked me, 'Is it the first ray, or the rays?' I said, 'I don't know. He said, 'What do you see when you get up in the morning? When you look over the horizon do you see one ray or rays?' I said, 'I'd have to check that out.'

Hendrix would seem to have had a cover for the album in mind too...another quote:

"There is also evidence that Hendrix may have had a cover in mind for the release. On September 17th, 1970, he sketched out various faces to form the shape of a cross, with his own face in the middle. The right arm of the cross had faces of white people, including J.F.K. and Hitler and two women and a baby. On the left arm of the cross was Martin Luther King, Jr., a black woman with a crown, an African woman, and a baby. On the bottom shaft, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Cochise, two women and a baby represented Native Americans. Above Hendrix's head, the top shaft of the cross showed Buddha, Genghis Khan, a Japanese woman, and a Chinese baby, representing the Asian Peoples."

I like this CD and gave it 4/5 stars. But knowing that there are existing track listings by Hendrix out there I tend to wish they had tried to stay closer to the song orders he had chosen (Of course Jimi might have made many changes to those song orders before the album was completed).

Since these days most people can make their own CDs I would probably arrange a version (for my own listening pleasure) to look something like this:

Since the only version of Cherokee Mist I have heard is on the Box Set and has simliar patterns to that of In From The Storm I left it off. I left off My Friend since it was a leftover track from 1968. For those who are into having an instrumental open the album there is a spacey guitar instrumental called The New Rising Sun on the now deleted Hendrix CD compilation Voodoo Soup...I just wasn't sure how to fit it in due to space limitations. Pali Gap is also a track that could have been on the album as it was recorded during the same time period. Of course everyone's version of this album would probably be different (including Jimi's).

I could go on and on about this but I guess the bottom line is I like the music on this album very much I just wish it could have somehow stayed closer to Jimi's vision...

I shouldn't have to convince anyone of the musical genius that is Van Halen. The music on this CD will stand the test of time, and will never lose it's value to those who appreciate rock.If you don't have this, you should. You will have made a wise choice.Feel good about that.

Worst Roth-era disc..........2007-03-12

By far. Can't beleive all of the glowing reviews for this one. Well, i guess thats what this page can do sometimes. Just a lousey, confused effort in my book. Love VH too, favorite band of all time, but just could never warm up to WACF. "CRADLE" and "EVERYBOY WANTS..." are decent VH staples and fine in their own right, but the REST! Much of the material on this album sounds like B-side and outtakes! "LOSS OF CONTROL" "COULD THIS BE MAGIC" AND "TAKE YOUR WHISKEY HOME" are just failed experiments. WACF is just a weak, limp-wristed transistional album for the band. It still gets two stars because this is atleast better then III and much of the dreck put out under VAN HAGAR.

Growth.......2007-02-12

The short 20 second song after "in a simple rhyme" is the uncredited/unfinished "Growth", and that symbolized this record, big improvement from VHII, better songs and ed's first Keyboard song "...and the cradle will rock" done on a distorted electric piano through a flanger.

THE VAN HALEN LEGEND CONTINUES WITH WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST! .......2007-01-07

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece album entitled "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" by one of Rock's most ALL-TIME greatest legendary bands ever, I'm talking about the GREAT LEGENDARY V-A-N H-A-L-E-N! "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" was originally released in 1980 on the Warner Brothers Records label in association with Van Halen Productions Inc. I purchased the very first release of this album on Compact Disc and the matrix or ID number is 3415-2. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

WOW! What can I say about this legendary album and the great legendary band that recorded it all those years ago that hasn't already been said? Instead of writing and adding my own personal notes, I will quote word for word what is written on the inner sleeve album notes as follows: "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" was Van Halen's third album and third consecutive multi-million best seller. Released in March of 1980, it contained nine original songs including such instant Van Halen classics as "And The Cradle Will Rock...," "Tora! Tora!" and "Everybody Wants Some!!"

The Netherlands-born Van Halen brothers were originally trained as concert pianists. When the family relocated to Los Angeles, Alex (drums) and Eddie (guitar) joined forces with Midwestern-bred vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony to form Mammoth. After changing its name to VAN HALEN, the group became a club favorite and was signed to Warner Brothers Records in 1977.

Van Halen's first two albums and the group's legendary live performances on two sold-out world tours established the band as a premiere rock attraction. Returning to the studio in 1980 with producer Ted Templeman, they recorded "WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST" in two and a half weeks. The album raced into the Top 5, where it remained for more than two months and became a certified Platinum seller.

As you can see, this is definitely a great legendary treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album will also prove to persevere and endure the test of time and will get better with age like wine. This legendary priceless gem will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!

In closing, As we all fully well know, the VAN HALEN legend does not even come close to ending here either! If anything, IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING! VAN HALEN would continue to release many more great albums that were still yet to come that lied ahead. There would also prove to be more tales and stories in the VAN HALEN legend that would still need to be conquered and written in chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviews, is something that you will have to stay tuned and read further on at a later date. Here's to you David Lee, Eddie, Alex and Michael. Keep Persevering! That the most famous garage-rock record of all time, the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," is buried on the last CD of this four-disc box is very much in keeping with the spirit of the (often) one-hit wonders that people Nuggets. Here, "Louie Louie" is just another great song. An elaboration on the 1972 double LP, which is included in its original sequence, this set piles on dozens more great moments of inspiration, guts, chutzpah, and sometimes sheer commercial calculation. How else to explain the advice "Look at yourself" from the likes of the Strawberry Alarm Clock, whose idea of mind expansion seems limited to putting together two very vaguely related nouns--"Incense and Peppermints"--so their swinging Farfisa-led track will have something, anything, for verbal content? There's loads of such wisdom on display here, prefab and otherwise, usually delivered as rabidly as possible. (Try the Remains' "Don't Look Back," Mouse and the Traps' "Maid of Sugar--Maid of Spice," or the Music Machine's "Talk Talk," which was actually a hit.) And remember: "The sky is falling / The ocean is calling / The world ... is spinning 'round ... and 'round." For sure. --Rickey Wright

This is a fantastic collection. Precisely what rock'n'roll was meant to be in the 1960's: Raw,snotty,youthful-and not necessarilly "great artistic" music or "classic rock", whatever the hell that garbage is, like it degenerated into after the Sargent Pepper album came out and ruined everything about real '60's rock'n'roll. While many of these bands were indeed influenced by The Stones (not to mention The Yardbirds,Kinks, etc.), it is completely unfair to compare them to British bands, since they had an attitude and sound that was distinctively American and all their own. Sure, many of these bands were one hit wonders or no hit wonders, but so what? Most of this is great music.
And in response to some reviews saying how this can't compare to The Rolling Stones, etc., in my humble opinion, most of this is far better. Anyway, I've always thought The Stones were one of the most overrated bands of all time. Real rock'n'roll isn't supposed to be great art nor take itself all that seriously, which is exactly what happened after the overrated Sargent Pepper album came out,and in my opinion the ridiculousness of Hendrix, Jim Morrisen, etc. (Don't get me wrong, these guys were talented-just took themselves too seriously).
Anyway, I suggest buying this collection if you like raw, unpolished, sixties punk. And I also recommend the "Back From The Grave" compilations.

Un fourre-tout de bon stock........2007-05-30

Le titre peut être trompeur car ce coffret ne renferme pas uniquement du psychédélique, il est important de tenir compte du "era" dans le titre. En effet, ce coffret présente la musique d'une époque 1965-68 mais ne se limite pas qu'au psychédélique. On y puise dans le rock de garage, le frat-rock et le psychédélique confondus. C'est à la fois la force et la faiblesse de ce coffret qui devient par le fait même un excellent survol de bijoux issus de cette époque mais ce n'est pas le coffret à faire jouer pour un bon buzz lysergique ou psylocibien (d'où le 4 étoiles)... C'est plutôt un gros "teaser". J'ai de la difficulté aussi avec le "first" parce qu'il est clair que le psychédélisme existe depuis des milliers d'années bien que l'appellation n'existait pas encore... Bref, un peu prétentieux mais excellent, et un moyen d'obtenir des titres de vieux psychédélique autrement difficiles à dénicher... La présentation du coffret est aussi magnifique, avec des pochettes aux couleurs flamboyantes et un livret d'infos complet et bien fait. Pour du vrai psychédélique, se tourner vers le coffret Acid drops, Spacedust and Flying Saucers, les compilations Beyond the calico wall, Psychedelic Experience volume 1&2, Pebbles vol.3, Electric Sugarcube Flasbacks, Rubbles (toutes) et Chocolate soup for diabetics (toutes). Il y en a d'autres excellentes mais celles-ci sont relativement faciles à trouver et vous injecterons plein de couleurs (des plus obscures et indéfinissables aux plus fluorescentes) dans les oreilles!

Song upon song of rock n roll glory!.......2007-05-22

Better than just about any album I can think of, Nuggets embodies the spirit of rock and roll, captures that elusive musical zeitgeist and pins it down for all to behold and admire. The songs found on these four discs are loud, fun, catchy, colorful, occasionally beautiful and often mind-altering. Bridging the gap between pop, r&b, psychedelia, proto-punk, folk-rock, surf, and dance-craze insanity, these songs exemplify the anarchic, bouncing off the walls, let's-bash-this-sucker-out-and-have-more-fun-than-anyone-has-ever-had-before philosophy of rock and roll, assaulting (and delighting) listeners with blasts of youthful agression, boundless energy, and unfettered enthusiasm. From start to finish, its an awesome experience, and one that every self-respecting rock fan should experience at least once in his or her life- preferably once a day.

The box set's first disc (which recreates, track for track, the original Nuggets album, as compiled in 1972 by Lenny Kaye and Jac Holzman) alone is one of the greatest rock albums ever. It features absolute classics such as the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)," a psych-pop call to arms whose reverbing guitars and aching vocals will resonate accross the ages, as well as the Standells' "Dirty Water," a slinking garage-rock foot stomper with a great sing-along vocal and a nasty guitar line. Orther garage-rockers include the Seeds' "Pushin' Too Hard," which boasts a wonderfully weird two-chord guitar riff and a snarling lead vocal, as well as the Count Five's ludicrously catchy Yardbirds ripoff "Psychotic Reaction" and the 13th Floor Elevators' certifiably insane "You're Gonna Miss Me." Which is to say nothing of The Chocolate Watchband's "Let's Talk About Girls," which manages to out-sneer the 'Stones, and the Amboy Dukes' cover of "Baby Please Don't Go," an absolutely hyperactive proto-metal jam-out/guitar assault. And then there are the pop classics: In "Sugar and Spice," the Cryan Shames create one of the most irrisistable love songs ever, outfitting a wonderfully dopey main melody with some playful guitars and a rhythm that will never leave your head. Ever. "Night Time" and "My World Fell Down" (by the Strangeloves and Sagittarius, respectively) make use of layer upon layer of instrumentation to create dizzying little constructions of pure radio gold, while the Castaways' "Liar Liar" does an excellent job of being as weird as it is catchy. Just listen to those vocals! Other excercizes in sheer awesomness include the Remains' "Don't Look Back," one of the many tracks on this set that can be described as "driving, emotional, and utterly cathartic." And then there are the Premiers, whose "Farmer John" matches its sheer sing-along-till-your-lungs-fall-out catchiness with wonderfully mind-numbing stupidity. The Magic Mushrooms' "It's-A-Happening" is pure googly-eyed psychedlia, and our lives are all the better for it.

The next three discs, graciously compiled by the good (very, very, good) folks over at Rhino Records, expand on Kaye and Holzman's compilation, serving up 91 more littel-known gems from the mid 60s. They, of course, rule, and it would be just about impossible to go through all the highlights here, but there are a few that just beg to be raved about: The Litter's "Action Woman" is a pounding, vicious, roaring fuzz rocker, and the Sparkles' "No Friend of Mine" is every bit as ticked off and maniacle. The Chocolate Watchband's "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love In)" is a tough-as-nails blues pounder with a wonderfully sarcastic lead vocal and some mean guitar outbursts. The Brigands' "Would I Still Be Her Big Man" is a tense, moody stunner, with some fantastically emotional vocals. The Broques "I Ain't No Miracle Worker" is... remember how I said that a lot of the songs on this set can be described as "driving, emotional, and utterly cathartic?" Here's one of those songs. Needless to say, it's mind-bogglingly good. Ditto the Dovers' haunting, gorgeous "What Am I Gonna Do" and the Lemon Drops' dreamy "I Live in the Springtime." And if you liked "Farmer John," just wait until you hear "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)," one of the most heroically stupid frat-rock songs ever recorded. The Elastik Band's "Spazz," meanwhile, is utterly insane. By the way, I haven't even come close to summing up all the styles and sounds on this set. There are still all those great folk-rockers ("Little Black Egg," "Laugh Laugh"), psychedelic head-trips ("Last Time Around," "Voices Green and Purple"), earth-melting guitar storms ("Blackout of Gretely," "At the River's Edge"), and "Louie Louie," which really is its own genre.The point is, these songs are incredible. Incredible! Vital, even. Listen to 'em once, and they'll become a part of your life forever. And trust me, they make for great friends.

Plus, the set comes with an eye-wateringly good bocklet that features great essays, pictures, and band bios (including commentary on all 118 tracks!) Basically, this is a gift to any fan of rock and roll, an utterly listenable musical classic that belongs in every CD case and pair of ears on earth. Absolutely, positively, 100% essential. You need this more than oxygen.

First Psychedelic era 1965/68.......2007-05-07

This four cd set has a great deal of yesteryear music from 1965/68. As I was there at the time, to go back to this music that has value and meaning, understanding how this type of music developed. This is a "got to have" for your collection. Even this summer there is a Hippie Fest concert tour, helping bring back this era to a new generations. L$$

I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

Stevie Wonder was in the middle of a multi-album roll when he put out this funk and soul collection, clunky title and all, in 1974. As usual, he adds depth and unexpected touches to even the most straightforward love song--the moving piano ballad "Too Shy to Say" has a spooky feeling, as if "I want to fly away with you, until there's nothing more to do" is the saddest line he ever sang. The harder songs, such as the fuzzy funk of "Boogie On Reggae Woman" and the angry "doo-de-wop" attack on Richard Nixon in "You Haven't Done Nothin'," add urgency without sacrificing the album's cohesiveness. --Steve Knopper

One of Stevie Wonder's many classic albums.......2007-07-25

This is a very moody album. Even "Smile Please", which you'd expect by the title to be this all-out joyous funfest like "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing", has a hint of melancholy. To say nothing of the really melancholy songs: the spiritual "Heaven is Ten Zillion Light Years Away"; the emotional "They Won't Go When I Go"; eerie love song "Creepin'" - two of the three songs concern death. Hell, even the funk-a-thon "You Haven't Done Nothin'" is a tirade against Nixon - it was a hit, and it's catchy, danceable, smart and easily a highlight, but I can't shake the nagging feeling that it sounds like "Superstition". Then again, "Superstition" laid the groundwork for all of Stevie's funk-a-thons, so maybe that's a moot point. Wonder's only genuinely happy in a couple spots: the reggae-funk hybrid "Boogie on Reggae Woman", a massive hit and it's a damn good time; the lovely "Bird of Beauty", and "Please Don't Go", with full choir singing backups. Not that I'm saying the only Stevie is joyous Stevie - come on, I gave Innervisions five stars! And the darker songs are among the best: "Creepin'" is my favorite outside of "Boogie On"; "Heaven" has interesting keyboards; "They Won't Go" is, like "All in Love is Tony Blair", therapeutically cathartic. I think the spacey "Too Shy to Say" is a bore, but that's it: this is another of Stevie's best.

An almost spiritual experience.......2007-05-18

The only thing new that I could possibly add to any forum regarding this phenomenal piece of musical artistry is that whenever I put it on, I experience something that goes way beyond listening pleasure. Listening to this CD, from beginning to end, is for me, almost like a spiritual experience. I find it spiritually healing. It's restful and uplifting all at the same time. Each song picks me up in a soothing emotional embrace and carries me like a newborn baby on to the next one, right till the end of the CD, when I wake up from my trance and wonder where all the time went.

Stevie Wonder doesn't have many peers but I will forever be in awe of him and his small group of fellow legends whose music is still relevant, still vibrant, still totally engaging, well over 30 years after it was first made.

Absolutely beautiful. Five stars are nowhere near enough.

This is the greatest effort that Stevie has ever produced. It is a masterpiece in Soul, R&B and Funk all tied into one nice package. If you haven't heard this You Haven't Heard Nothing. So Boogie on Raggae Women.

Nine of the 17 tracks on this historical curio surfaced on the 1978 LP Skynyrd's First and... Last, but more than a quarter of a century passed between the 1971/'72 sessions that produced these germinating tracks and their full appearance. Skynyrd's First: The Muscle Shoals Album documents a group of young musicians finding their footing, but by no means is it an amateurish affair. While ongoing personnel shifts are in evidence (only Ronnie Van Zant, Albert Collins, and Gary Rossington from the classic lineup appear throughout), the playing and writing is surprisingly tight. It's easy to see why veteran session man Jimmy Johnson, the producer of the sessions, insisted: "I had never heard a band that were that well rehearsed and had their songs together." It's ALLEN Collins, not Albert. Allen Collins was a white rock guitarist. Albert Collins was a black blues guitarist. Kinda hard to confuse the two if you know anything about music.

Here we have the complete recording from the Muscle Shoals sessions, any fan of Skynyrd can not be without. These songs are very interesting versions that predate the familiar versions we all hear on the radio. There are some songs here that don't appear anywhere else. This is a nice glimpse into the very early days of this phenomenal band. If you're a big fan, get it, if you only like a couple of Skynyrd's songs, you can safely pass on this I guess.

cd-heaven's got a point..........2006-09-21

Cd-Heaven stands corrected. If you really wanted to, you could do like we did in the old days and put down your own mix of songs on tape, I.E. put down this record on tape and add the missing two from best of the rest. And if you're really lucky and have an 8-track recorder (like me) then you can really play around with it, though you wouldn't have the room for many of the songs. Some activities (like doing mixtapes) never go out of style. Only problem is being able to find decent blanks anymore.

CORRECTION! "Skynyrd's First" is indeed the first album to present the complete, unadulterated Muscle Shoals album. There are no tracks missing or added. This is everything that was recorded in "Sweet Home Alabama" between 1971 and 1972. CD-Heaven's review (below) is just dead wrong in stating that the two tracks from the 1982 compilation "Best of the Rest" are from the Muscle Shoals sessions. These tracks have also been purported by various sources to be from a non-existent single, supposedly released in 1971. In fact, the two songs in question, "I've Been Your Fool" and "Gotta Go," were actually recorded for Al Kooper at Studio One in Atlanta in 1973 as demos for Skynyrd's first MCA / Sounds of the South album, "Pronounced Lehn-nerd Skin-nerd," a year after the Muscle Shoals album was already in the can. So maybe CD-Heaven should to get his own "awkward eyes" and facts checked next time before posting bogus, mis-leading information.

Gems between the much-played hits.......2007-01-06

Let me preface by saying that I rate according to how satisfied I have been since discovering or re-discovering music that I buy, or, know enough to have a decent opinion from earlier experience with it. If you think you MAY like a band or cd, gotten onto Amazon (which is primo) and listened to the samples for the cd, then you know pretty much what you're in for. Reviews help alot, though. But, reviewers who blast a cd or band for personal, almost political reasons don't help those of us debating to buy based on what we like to hear. Just had to get that out to let you know I'm sincere when I say... this cd is full of really great Scorpions songs. Really great songs period. Sure, many were played over and over on radio, but for good reason. I love the Scorp's, and I appreciate "Big City Nights" as much as anyone, but I've heard it a million times. It's the gems in between that seal the deal on this one. "Coming Home" for instance. Song samples do this one no justice because of how it cuts loose later. "Same Thrill", "As Soon as the Good Times Roll", and the timeless anti-war "Crossfire" are really, really good. I saw these guys 3 times back in the 80' in Chicago. Fun, energetic, loud, powerful tunes; a great stage show every time. The rest of their earlier stuff is exceptional as well. This one, "Animal Magnetism", and "Lovedrive" are essential for those of us who like, or love, the Scorpions.

Their Biggest Sting.......2006-12-22

George Orwell was wrong. 1984 was the year of the Scorpion. The German quintet exploded into superstardom with the release of "Love At First Sting". The album featured three songs that made the Billboard Top 100, and the album itself peaked at number 6 on the Billboard album chart. The phenomenal success of the album sparked an 18-month world tour, which then fueled their second live recording, `World Wide Live'. A small aside: in the summer of 1984, as a 23 year-old music industry professional I had the good fortune to gain access to the Scorpions' sound check in Winnipeg, Canada, where I stood next to the mixing console, shoulder to shoulder with then little-known rock icons John Bongiovi and Richard Sambora, enjoying a fantastic half-hour experience.

There isn't a bad track on this album. From the pure metal of "Coming Home" to the staccato drumbeat in the anti-war "Crossfire", this album has all the melody, metal, and meat that Scorpions fans have come to expect. There is a reason that this was their greatest commercial success - it's a great album, not just as a period piece, but as a wonderful piece of work that has ably stood the test of time.

A small piece of trivia: although Francis Buchholtz is credited for playing on the album, and in fact toured with the band following the album's release, and is in the cover photo, it was Dio bassist Jimmy Bain who did the bass parts while recording the album.

Good Music, Bad Print.......2006-11-07

I am an old Scorpions fan, and always considered "Love At Firts Sting" one of their best albums of latter era. Actually, it's their last album with some original ideas, just like "Flick Of The Switch" was for AC/DC.

I purchased this album when I started replacing my dust gathering collection of tape records made in 80's and early 90's, finally having decided to get some quality sound of my old idols. How great was my disappointment wheh I have heard this CD! The quality is quite similair to what I had on my old tape - low record level, high frequencies are not audible. In short - you've got nothing of Mattias Jabs and Rudy Schenker guitars, quite a little of Klaus Meine voice, which was good back then.

I've heard Scorpions live this summer on private concert in Moscow: they performed mostly the songs from this album, and even given all those years passed, they sounded better.

And I thought they couldn't top Blackout.......2006-07-06

Well... they did. I read somewhere that the Scorps were in the Glam Metal genre. That's ridiculous. They're straight up hard rock. If you're not familiar with Rudolf Schenker's brother Michael, you must check out UFO. Why they aren't more popular, I'll never know. If you're looking for a guitar hero, check out Michael Schenker's guitarwork on the live version of Rock Bottom.

I HAVE AN ORIGINAL MIX of the brilliant and flawless "FIRST ALBUM" on CD --- released before the HORRIBLE idiotic "Six-Pack" remix. Any true Top fan who wants one -- just drop me an e- mail and I'll burn it for you for free.

Shoot, that's just asking for trouble, so scratch that -- but it'd almost be worth being taken to court just to be able to ask the band "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? -- and why in the world don't you rerelease the original mixes?"

My friend just found a used First Album CD in a used bin -- and it matches the UPC and CAT# on my good mix. So if you can find a used CD with NO DATE ANYWHERE on it and but the CAT # is: 3268-2 and UPC is: 7599-273779-2 -- BUY IT.

They also destroyed the equally brilliant "TEJAS" album -- they even CHANGED GUITAR LINES on "Asleep in the Desert" AND CHOPPED STUFF UP. Cut in HALF the brutally gorgoeus harmonica lead on "It's Only Love" -- Jerks. I think it must have been all the drugs people were doing in the 80's --- "hey lets spray paint over the Mona Lisa"

NOT THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS!!!.......2007-04-01

I am a recording engineer and sound mixer. I grew up in Texas, listening to and watching ZZ Top. The first two ZZ Top albums were released on vinyl records. Tres Hombres was the first to be released on Compact Disc. When the inevitable popularity of the CD overtook the market, Bill Ham thought it would be a great idea to release the first six albums on CD, which they affectionately called the "six pack." While remastering this compilation, somebody (who knows, but who controlled all of ZZ Top's musical movements??) got the bright idea to re-edit, reproduce, re-arrange and remix the first three albums. At the time, there was a new device in the studios that was known as a "digital echo" device for adding reverb and delay textures to sounds. Most notably, Phil Collins was using this echo device to enhance his drum sounds. ZZ Top's producer (you know who) decided it was the way to go as well, that the new sounds would attract the day's "new audience." The echo and reverb patterns on the "six pack" were so much bigger and wetter than on the original first three albums. Then I started to notice that there were different vocal performances and different guitar riffs in a few places. Talk about re-arranging an original! At a later time, the reproduced versions released on the "six pack" were then released on individual CD's which contain the original artwork of the first three albums. However, they are definitely NOT the original recordings. This process is much like Jimi Hendrix's producer, who went into the studio after Hendrix died and actually hired a player to finish the guitar work on recordings that were incomplete when Hendrix died. Those recordings were subsequently released as "Hendrix's final unrealeased recordings." Suffice it to say, that if the world's art museums decided that certain Rembrandt or DaVinci paintings looked "faded" or weren't "up to date with today's audience," and they repainted certain brush strokes on these masterpieces, the world art community would have a cow! Don't buy these CD's, they are not ORIGINAL works. They have been repainted to fit what someone thought would be a new and "catchy" idea.

10 Stars for ZZ Top's First Album.......2007-01-10

Music lovers who want to get into the essence of ZZ Top's sound should listen to their first album, aptly titled "ZZ Top's First Album." It's down-and-dirty blues from start to finish. The CD contains great vocals and instrumentation. The overall sound and groove might surprise a first-time listener, even if he or she is familiar with ZZ Top's more commercial tunes. This is the best ZZ Top album ever recorded, in many ways. It's also my third copy, the first two being on 33 1/3 vinyl LP.

Wait for the Rhino release, or dust off your turntable and find an LP.......2006-09-08

This is in regard to the 1980's recomposed/remastered version of ZZ Top's First Album. Ditto all of the comments about the awfulness of the reverb and fake drums. What's really sad is what was printed on the back of the vinyl LP jacket in 1970:

"In this day of homogenized rock, synthesized music, retakes, overdubbing, multi, multi-tracking, an honest recording by accomplished musicians is a rewarding pleasure. Z Z TOP'S FIRST ALBUM is just such a recording. This is the way blues-rock is meant to be played: openly, honestly, and spontaneously. It takes an experienced sensitive group such as Z Z TOP to capture the abstract blues from within and combine it with the ability to feel and play good hard rock without losing their communication."

17 years later, they trashed their own philosophy. Tres Hombres, and Fandango by Rhino, are the first honest digital transfers of the original first 5 ZZ Top albums.

This remarkable debut album, released a full seven years after the group had formed, was still way ahead of its time back in 1978. Suicide--Alan Vega on vocals and Martin Rev on keyboards and drum machine--are one of the most original acts in the history of popular music. I saw Martin Rev & Alan Vega multiple times at CBGB's back in the 80's. This album is an excellent representative of their live shows. Only two guys but the sounds they made filled the club. Vega's one of the most charismatic performers from the 80's and like the Ramones, Suicide never received proper credit for groundbreaking music....

i can even recall the misfits early demo stuff having an entertaning synth sound in there music( and that was just plain laughable, but wasnt terrible). This music however, is not "music", and anyone who can actually sit down and listen to this all the way through and try to tell me that I dont get the "artistic value".......well......to them i say, Enjoy sniffing your own farts the rest of your life

Beautiful, brilliant, terrifying CD.......2006-06-26

Biker gangs,teenag e sweethearts, TV stars and psycho killers are just some of the images conjured up on this unique slice of electric punk from '77.

As someone properly pointed out earlier, this isn't the "punk" many would equate with The Ramones, Dead Boys, Television, et al. For there is no guitarist, bassist or drummer. In like manner, to call this a "techno" album would not do either. But this album does draw inspirations from both. Alan Vega used the word "punk" in describing his earlier gigs, when he gained infamy for sporting a leather jacket, battered jeans and a bike chain that he pummeled the walls and floors with. Some of these things ARE punk in a sense.

But that's beside the point. What an album this is: Two artists with limited resources or instruments, except a battered organ (originally it was in fact a Farfisa) and a whole lotta attitude create an album of raw, primitive energy. Martin Rev's homemade riffs are an overtone to Alan Vega's beat-like lyrics. While "Ghost Rider" conjures up images of motorcyclists who are "blazin' away," "Rocket USA" is a brooding punch-out about "doomsday" amid a world of decadence: "It's nineteen hundred seventy seven/the whole country's doin' a fix/ It's doomsday.")

But this isn't always menacing. With an Elvis-like crooning, "Cheree" is an absolutely gorgeous update on '50s melodies. When Vega sings "Cheree Cheree/my comic book fantasy/ come play with me/ I love you / I love you, baby," it's actually quite moving. "Johnny" is fun little slice of rockabilly, albeit short. (What a shame!) "Girl" is probably the one low-water mark on the album that should be avoided at all costs, unless hearing someone moan perversely into the mic is entertaining to you.

Then there's "Frankie Teardrop", the jarring, disturbing 10-minute epic of 20-year-old Frankie who's stuck in the seamy side of NYC with a wife and kid - a working stiff who's "working from 7 to 5/he's just tryin' to survive" but snaps and what ensues is probably one of the scariest moments in music. The first time I heard this track I was sweating and I jumped about four times. Don't listen to this late at night alone - you've been warned. (Interesting side note: Bruce Springsteen is a fan of this song, apparently it was an inspiration when recording his "Nebraska" album a few years later.)

"Che" is a brooding comedown, a track that conjures up images of a TV/movie icon who meets his fate.

Rev and Vega have done a few albums together since (including the understated "A Way of Life" which I own on LP believe it or not!) but this debut remains unsurpassed. If you're hesitant to listen to this because of the notoriety surrounding "Frankie Teardrop" give this a chance and play it beginning to end. You might be pleasantly surprised - I certainly was!

(Note: The CD version I own is an out-of-print version from Demon Records, released in the late '80s, without the bonus tracks. So I can't comment on the live tracks.)

Post-punk... pre-Ramones?! [4.5 stars].......2006-05-04

Alan Vega and Martin Rev were WAAAY ahead of their time. Though their debut wasn't officially released until '78 (and even then, it predated the debuts of Joy Division, Killing Joke, The Cure, and possibly even PiL by about a year or so), this guitarless NY duo had been around since '71.

Anyway this album is the genesis of post-punk/New Wave, performed with a beat-up organ/synthesizer Rev probably found in the back alley of a music shop, and a decrepit but chugging drum machine that brings a futuristic pulse to the eerie synths and Alan Vega's voice, which sounds like Elvis detained in Guantanomo. Very original, very creepy, and very cool.

The material varies from what would be otherwise poppy tracks made slightly unnerving due to their foreboding starkness (Girl, Cheree, Keep Your Dreams) to more haunting and atmospheric songs (Ghost Rider, Rocket USA, Che) and even one track that sounds a bit like a primitive Doors cut (I Remember).

Then there's the 10-minute Frankie Teardrop--perhaps one of the most terrifying and claustrophobic songs ever released, with Vega's banshee screams punctuating the narrative of a young factory worker who kills himself and his own family out of desperation and wakes up in hell. The conclusion, with its ominous synths and Vega sounding as if he's going insane from the horror around him, will leave a scar on your mind.

The bonus material includes a decent, if roughly recorded CBGB's performance and the confrontational and chaotic "23 Minutes Over Brussels" show which is important for historical reasons, I suppose, but isn't worth listening to more than once or twice. The first disc is all you need to know. A bit primitive and dated in places, but still vital, influential, and amazing for fans of the genre.

Indeed the answer is obvious, the seer that is Pete...who sees reality with his own eyes first..in those "spiritual" days this LP of utter simplicity was a welcome pause as a purity thing going on as a retreat from sensory overload as this great LP hit the scene with the press and critical acclaim all to follow.
The dry bones and in a way of works in progress of Who classics past and current performed solo by their master are a wonderful treat that stands on it's own whether you like the Who or not.
The whole album, it's cover image of the spaceman pioneer venturing into primal territory, the Hindu inspired messages of Let's See Action, Nothing is Everything/Everything Is Nothing,Evolution(great collaboration with Faces Ronnie Laine singing his song also found on faces 1st step album), Pure and Easy, a wonderful remake of The Seeker and the rest of the songs are not mindless doodlings but are all refreshing sketches and songs smacking of heartfelt sincerity and emotion.
For those wanting to understanding the turbulence of the mind of a rock star and the calmness he sought as s retreat from the turbulence you need to begin here. As that great Cole Porter song "Begin The Beguine" found here of all places , covered in the 30's and 40's popularized by the great swing man Artie Shaw, Every end is a beginning and every beginning is an end..

This is an album I own on vinyl and have been wanting to pick it up on CD. The DVD-A version was enticing but, to pricey. This newly remastersed disc hit the spot. I'm very pleased.

Not a Worthwhile Upgrade.......2007-02-26

If you don't already own this title, by all means, get it. This and White City are my favorite solo outings by Pete. That said, the entire Pete Townshend remaster series is a disappointment. I had a hard time deciding, with each title, which one I was going to keep - the original or the remaster. I finally decided that, based on the extra tracks, I'd keep the remastered discs.

The remasters all have a greater clarity, but they possess a hard-edged sound that should have been rectified during remastering. Empty Glass is especially bad about this. So, if you already own these, I'd recommend living with them a while longer.

Pete steps out and into the limelight for the first time as "solo" artist.......2006-11-02

"Who Came First" features some terrific material that Pete wrote for the Lifehouse project (and that eventually ended up being released by The Who as well)along with originals written for this album and a guest appearence by the late great Ronnie Lane from the Faces. It's a terrific album that more than holds its own with later Townshend solo masterpieces (such as the more aggressive sounding rockin' album "Empty Glass"). The bonus tracks includes the acoustic "Sleeping Dogs" and "Mary Jane" with its banjo playing give the album a diverse sound. Some of these were on the earlier Ryko disc but, if I recall, the three bonus tracks at the end "Mary Jane", "I Always Say" and a re-recording of the standard "Begin the Beuine" round out this terrific re-release.

From the opening track "Pure and Easy" (which somehow sounds more personal and intimate when Pete sings it and the same can be said for "Let's See Action" although I prefer the Who version)through to "Time Is Passing" and re-recordings of "The Seeker" just about every track is a strong one.

Hip-O has done a great service for Townshend and Who fans by making this available again (with some terrific bonus tracks no less expanding on the original release)after Ryko's CD went out of print. The remastering sounds extremely good on this edition and the price is just right for fans.

Highly recommended.
