The Drum and Bass Collection

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This is the electronica equivalent of a tribute album: Instead of gathering bands together to cover the songs of an influential group, here we have a bunch of more or less well-known DJs (including members of Goldie's Metalheadz crew) remixing and reconstructing actual recorded works in their own image, namely with drum and bass (a.k.a. jungle) beats. In this case, the object of affection is Art of Noise, a clear forerunner to the current boom in sampled and spliced dance music.

The Drum and Bass Collection is the latest in a series of Art of Noise remix compilations, following 1990's The Ambient Collection and 1991's more techno- and rave-oriented release, The Fon Mixes. Considering that Drum and Bass is, thus, the third new Art of Noise record since the group disbanded eight years ago, perhaps the only tribute here is to the infinite possibilities for recycling old songs in this high-tech age. Then again, there's little here to suggest these tracks have anything to do with Art of Noise. For instance, in the hands of the London duo Flyright, Art of Noise's hit "Peter Gunn" (itself a drastic remake of the '50s television theme) loses all traces of the original's most distinguishing feature, Duane Eddy's twang guitar lead line. Similarly, Lightfoot's reworking of "Yebo," Art of Noise's 1989 collaboration with South African singing group Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens retains only two syllables of the original vocal part.

The question, then, is: If the rhythms are altered and the melodies disappear, what makes this an Art of Noise record? The answer: nothing. But, then, in the strange world of techno, all matters of source material and songwriting are bound to remain fuzzy. Do yourself a favor: Keep all inquiries to yourself and just concentrate on those crazy beats. --Roni Sarig

4 out of 5 stars Go Bananas.......2007-06-04

Good collection of Banarama's music. The album is overall a fun listen; it's good 80s girl band pop. The ones that got the big radio play are here [Venus, I Can't Help It, Cruel Summer] as well as some lesser knowns that are nice and pleasant discoveries [Love Truth and Honesty, Nathan Jones, and Shy Boy]. The album gets kind of weak toward the end, and the remakes of Na Na Hey Hey and Help are not appealing. Good pop overall though.

5 out of 5 stars This collection is great, but..........2005-03-29

I love Bananarama and this collection of their biggest hits before
Siobhan Fahey left the group is excellent. Although they hit the Hot 100 11 times, only 3 of those songs made the Top 40 (Cruel Summer, Venus, and I Heard a Rumour). Those songs plus many of their other hits are included here. However, one thing I do hate is when a record company puts out a Greatest Hits package and leaves off some of the songs that were released as singles. Most Greatest Hits packages do this, and this one is no exception. The key tracks missing here are the title song from the movie "The Wild Life" (which peaked at #70 in 1984) and "More Than Physical" (which peaked at #73 in 1986). Since this was issued, they have issued a package called "The Essentials" which includes all of their Hot 100 hits (including the 2 songs missing on this CD). So, if you want all the Hot 100 hits, skip this one and buy "The Essentials". If you just want the Top 40 hits plus some great dance tunes, this will suffice.

4 out of 5 stars Bananarama--A Tasty Guilty Pleasure.......2003-11-01

(3.5 stars) Everyone's got to have their musical guilty pleasures, and I am certainly no exception. Right up there on my list is Bananarama, a band that produced music that no one would describe as deep, sophisticated, or consequential. But, you know what? There are times when I don't want to listen to music that is challenging or probing but merely want to be entertained. And when those moods hit me, there's a good chance you'll find me tucked away in a dark recess of my home tapping my toes to the bouncy pop of Bananarama, all the while looking around nervously to make sure no one catches me in this indiscretion.

That I would like Bananrama is curious considering that I despise boy-band and girl-group bubble-gum pop, which to me is nauseatingly cloying and pre-fabricated and sounds as if it's performed by automatons, not humans. By contrast, Bananarama's music is brimming with exuberance and coquettish playfulness and full of engaging hooks. Listening to Bananarama is the musical equivalent of flirting with a saucy minx whose come-hither enticements are just a tease. Insubstantial? Yes. Meaningful? Hardly. Fun? Absolutely.

The Greatest Hits Collection contains all the Banarama that you'd ever want (or need) to hear, including: the dance-`til-you-drop version of "Venus"; the catchy "Cruel Summer"; the glossy "I Heard a Rumor"; the jaunty "Shy Boy (Don't It Make You Feel Good)"; and the frothy "Love in the First Degree." Even the most cold-hearted cynic couldn't resist these lively tunes. So go ahead and indulge yourself in this guiltiest of pleasures. Don't worry; your secret's safe with me.

5 out of 5 stars Fine collection of Bananarama tunes.......2002-09-09

All right, this class is BANM-52, for those of you into 80's music studies, and the required text here is Bananarama's Greatest Hits Collection. I would've recommended their first and fourth studio albums, whose key tracks comprise this compilation, but they are criminally hard to get and/or out-of-print. No matter, this single CD collection will do.

For most 80's music fans, their barn-burning cover of Shocking Blue's "Venus" and "Cruel Summer" are their two most famous songs. Don't worry--they're here. Their fourth album Wow boasted five singles, all here, and that was when they exploded, becoming part of the Stock-Aitken-Waterman bubblegum machine. However, I would like to point out that the single versions of "I Want You Back" and their cover of the Supremes' post-Diana Ross hit "Nathan Jones" are on this collection, and are much better than the originals on Wow.

The song distribution per album is as follows, with (C) indicating cover songs:

Deep Sea Skiving (4)--"Aie A Mwana" (C), "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'", "Shy Boy", "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)" (C)

Bananarama (2)--"Cruel Summer", "Robert De Niro's Waiting"

True Confessions (2)--"Venus" (C), "Trick Of The Night"

Wow (5)--"I Heard A Rumour", "Love In The First Degree", "I Can't Help It", "I Want You Back", "Nathan Jones" (C)

(New) (2)--"Love Truth And Honesty", "Help!" (C)

That's consistent with how I feel--Wow and Deep Sea Skiving were Bananarama at their best, their self-titled album being the worst.

Of the new tracks, "Love Truth And Honesty" would've fit in their Wow album, which figures as it was produced by Stock-Aitken-Waterman. And speaking of S-A-W, notice that eight of the fifteen songs here are S-A-W productions, including their cover of the Beatles' "Help!" If one thinks about it, the original was also quick-paced, and the Rams' version is just as bouncy.

With the exception of the new songs, this features the original trio of Sarah Dallin, Keren Woodward, and Siobhan Fahey. The Rams at their best--what else can I say? Believe you me, you won't slip with this one. OK, class dismissed.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs.......2001-07-25

I absolutely love this album. It is a great collection of upbeat, pleasant and fun music to listen to. I especially like to listen to them in the car when the trip is long and the traffic is bad out there.

5 out of 5 stars The music takes me back to 1988.......2007-05-13

Me and my best friend from elementary school back in the 80's, could listen to this music for hours!

5 out of 5 stars I can't help it.......2004-06-30

As big of a music snob as I am, I can't help but go back into my music collection and listen to some of the cds/tapes that I grew up on, namely '80s music. Having grew up in the '80s, I will always have a soft spot for '80s music. Bananarama is one of those '80s pop acts that I will always have a soft spot for. I just loved their music, namely "Cruel Summer", "Venus", and "I Heard a Rumor". While The Bangles and The Go Go's were more rock orientated, girl groups such as Expose and Bananarama were vocal groups. Yeah the music videos for "Venus" and "I Heard A Rumor" were pretty silly, if not stupid but the songs were so much fun to listen to. They are unbelievably catchy. The songs always sticks in my head but unlike Jennifer Lopez's music, I actually like Bananarama's music. My favorite Bananarama song definitely is "Cruel Summer", the ultimate summer song. Although Ace of Base did a fine job covering the Bananarama song, I definitely prefer the trio's version. I also adore "Love in the First Degree" and "Robert De Niro's Waiting". Although they didn't get any airplay here in the states (as far as I know), they were just as irresistably catchy as the group's more famous songs. The girls' harmonies were excellent. Gimme Bananarama over Wilson Phillips any day.

5 out of 5 stars A Simple Pleasure!!!!.......2003-10-25

I used to love this group when I was a little girl and I used to listen to their songs on the radio and now I have finally found there songs I really do enjoy these songs because they take me down memory lane and I reminsce about all of the good times I had when I was a kid and basically I just like their music. I would recommend anyone who likes 1980's new wave music to buy this album this is a great compilation. My favorite songs on this album are: He was really saying something, Cruel Summer, I heard a rumor, and venus this is really a nice album and I would really reccommend anyone to buy this album!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Unadulterated Fun.......2002-01-14

Until the Spice Girls invaded the planet with their brand of Girl Power, Bananarama ruled the roost with their consistent brand of fun-don't-give-a-damn pop music, which only had one mission - Fun. This Greatest Hits collection explains the timelessness of the Fun Girl Three, dividing their worldwide successes into two part - the early years & the Stock Aiken & Waterman Years. Both parts yielded equal successes & one listen to this CD brings you back in time to when pop was accessible without being overtly marketed. From the summery tunes of NaNaNaNa (Kiss Him Goodbye) to the funky percussion of Cruel Summer, the Bananas brought a smile to the world. Messy hairdos & ripped jeans, the girls only relied on their music & attitude to sell records (hence saving all that money spent on designer clothes for going down the pub). The SAW years saw their star shining brighter than ever. Venus is perhaps the most brilliant pop song ever done - & almost 16 years later still has an oomph & longevity that few bands can legitimately achieve. Became a US No.1 also. I Heard A Rumour, Love In The First Degree & I Can't Help It ensured that the charts were sufficiently set alight. Personal fave is their cover version of Help! (with French & Saunders & Kathy Burke - comic & brilliant). One other irony is their cover of The Supremes' (who prior to the Bananas were the best selling female group ever) Nathan Jones. Proved the girls could sing & give a song their unique verve. Bananas, we salute you & all who have sailed in you.

5 out of 5 stars "...and Venus was her name..."!.......2001-10-04

I LOVED this song! As a little girl, I would listen to pop music stations for HOURS just to hear Bananarama's version of "Venus". And since I loved "Venus" so much-I started listening to their other songs and became a Bananarama fan. Their sound was very different-it couldn't be easily placed in any one musical category-which is why I love this Greatest Hits CD! It is still fun, carefree music that can make you move!

Norman Cook's Fatboy Slim alter ego has become a big-beat legend (if legendary status can be bestowed on such a young genre) and thus a separate entity from Cook's earlier career incarnations. This collection demonstrates, however, that while evolving profoundly from more acoustic pursuits like the Housemartins and the reggae-flavored, early house music of Beats International, Cook has maintained a long musical memory. After 15 years spent producing an impressive roster of other people's records along with his own, the extraordinary diversity and inventiveness he displays on a set of turntables is the inevitable result of sharp, tasteful ears. Reimagining a classic King Tubby reggae melody for "Tribute to King Tubby," Cook acknowledges the de facto inventor of dub music, even while stamping it with his own thoroughly modern dub-beat approach. Likewise, Cook digs around in the space-age pop of early electronic artist Jean Jacques Perrey's "E.V.A.," unlocking that song's cheesy-smooth melodies with sample-laden aplomb. Too often, Cook's Fatboy persona (and big beat in general) is derided for a supposedly brainless approach to dance music, but that criticism misses the point. What's amazing is how he manages, with such an unwieldy assortment of influences, to mix with the ear of an interpreter, rather than a revisionist, while still making it listenable enough to warrant the accusation of brainlessness in the first place. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars not for people with narrow tastes and more narrow minds.......2007-03-13

I had to write something after I saw a couple bad reviews here from people who obviously identify Cook/Fatboy with a very narrow genre, but if you like this artist not for some genre he fits into, but for his endless creativity and the fun he jams into his funk, BUY THIS CD. I can see how some people can't handle everything going on here, from a tribute to original reggae dubmaster King Tubby, to funkmaster James Brown, to "roll the dice" a precursor to the acid beats of "better living thru chemistry", to obscure 60's French synth-rock of Jean Jacques Perry, to Steve Miller (!)... Cook makes it all work and he makes it all his own.

4 out of 5 stars Sorta-kinda Carribean Techno.......2007-02-05

An album produced by Fatboy Slim, this is a nice addition to a collection that contains "You've Come A Long Way, Baby." I was first exposed to this album in 2000 and I have come upon it time and time again in different situations. Finally, I have purchased it. Many of the songs have kinda-sorta Carribean beats; there are also some seemingly familiar tunes, maybe from commercials, or perhaps past tunes that were remixed. Whatever the case, it is nice music with which to drive, especially. Take a listen to some of the tracks and see if you like the style, or not!

3 out of 5 stars Fat Boy Slim/Norman Cook Collection.......2006-03-20

This album is pretty groovy and funky, but not hugely exciting. It's good background music, or Saturday bopping-around-the-house-doing-some-housework music. Nice and happy, and sure to get you grooving, but it's before the time of Funk Soul Brother, so it's much more basic than his later stuff. Simple, smooth, fun, funky, but not Weapon of Choice.

5 out of 5 stars Norman Cook is a pioneer! Buy this CD!.......2001-11-17

All I can say is God Bless Norman Cook... this collection goes way back for me because I was a club dj when all these songs were coming out and I used to spin just about all of them on a regular basis. Todays dance music producers (and even many hip-hop producers) owe a lot to Norman Cook because he helped pave the way for todays scene! This CD Rocks!!! If you were clubing when back when these songs were coming out, you'll remember how refreshing they sounded compared to everything else that was going on!!! so to those who say "don't waste your money", I'd probably guess they have very limited music collections and we're bummed it wasn't "You've Come A Long Way Baby 2", and simply have a long way to come themselves when it comes to music.

1 out of 5 stars Really, really bad!!.......2001-08-01

Ok...please do yourself a favor and dont waste your money on this cd, it has just too old tunes and mixes and the only good songs in it are the ones mixed by fatboy slim like "the world is made up of this and that" and "renegade master" but overall the entire cd is boring and has a very slow pace...anyway I wasted my money, dont waste yours peace

5 out of 5 stars I Loved It!!!.......2006-09-22

If you like Chill Out...probably my favorite genre of Electronica...then this is a great CD to add to your collection. If you don't know much about Chill Out or other "Ambient" type music, then you might also want to consider purchasing this as it's got a good selection of different things.

It's actually a collection of several separately sold CD's including: Later (2 CD Set); Electrochill; Electroburn; chillhouse; Chill, Vol.1; and Carol C. First Impressions. I would put them in about that order in terms of best to worst although all have something to offer. The 1st 3 (4 if you count Later as two) CD's are awesome but the quality falls off somewhat after that. You can't beat it for ~$20 though. FYI...somebody else on here said they liked "The Essential Trance Collection" but not this one. If feel exactly the opposite..."Trance" was a joke, but "Chill" is a must have for those who enjoy Ambient and Lounge type music!

4 out of 5 stars Good variety of Down Tempo music styles.......2005-04-01

Contrary to other reviewers opionions this set has a lot going for it. This collection features everything from Trip-Hop to Ambient Drum and Bass to Slow House. Now, there are better albums out there if you want the best trip hop, or the best ambient drum and bass experience. The point here is though you get a great variety for something like $4.40 a piece ($3.60 per going off of amazons price). I also enjoy the comments about this set being "boring." I would hope a box set called "The Essential Chill Collection" wouldnt make me want to jump out of my seat. The point is to relax you and just lay back and enjoy.

This set features a variety of CDs that were origionally released over the years by themselves. What i find interesting is that one CD featured in the set is called "Later" by various artists. It is a double disc and provides two of the CDs in the set. This CD sold seperately on amazon sells for $21 and has good reviews. So if youre buying from amazon, you add an extra $4 and you get FIVE more CDs.

Discs 1, 2, and 5 feature predominately Trip Hop. Being a big fan of trip hop I was pleased with these albums. Some tracks were a bit lacking but i got to hear a lot of artists ive never heard before. Basically though if you like trip hop, youll like these discs.

Disc 3 is an ambient drum and bass CD. Its no LTJ Bukem but it offers a nice laid back dnb vibe. My one real problem with this CD is that it was a bit short.

Disc 4 brought me back to the 90s with the old school kind of chill techno that was common back then. Certainly was not something i was expecting in this collection, but i found was a decent addition.

Disc 6 was more of a mainstream slightly higher tempo CD. It featured a lot of housey chillout tracks. Noteables on this CD being Underworld, Moby, Air, Kosheen etc.

Disc 7 is labeled "Chillhouse" and thats exactly what it is. Definately the CD that impressed me the least. You know, the typical cheap vocals and house beat.

All that said I was happy with my purchase. Now, could there be a better collection of chillout tunes? Certainly. Is this still a great deal? Absolutely.

1 out of 5 stars Dont waste your money.......2004-10-15

I own the Essential Trance collection, and it wasn't too bad. Not all of the cds were good, but a few of them had some really decent tracks for the first 4 or 5 tracks (then they all eventually went to crap) I thought eh I'll give this a try.

$30 is a bit of a steep investment in music, but granted of course it's got a whopping 7 cds, so surely it's got to have something good. Sofar I'm halfway through the set, and I have not been inspired at all. It's got a few tracks that are 'ok', but there's a lot of stuff that's just extremely boring. Not really overly repetitive, just.. boring. I think I'd be more inspired listening to elevator music than this set. I must agree with Randy's review on this product. Don't waste your money like I did.

2 out of 5 stars Essential for what?.......2003-12-27

The only chill I got was thinking how much I wasted on this purchase. Having recently acquired "Ibiza -The History of Chillout" (which I highly recommend) on a whim during a recent trip to London I guess I was just on a Chillout boxed set high. I decided to try my luck again and purchased this simply because the store clerk said it had arrived recently, and at a whopping seven cd's in the set I was sure it was loaded with good stuff. Unfortunately this volume just means more to suffer while trying to plow your way through the complete set. Of course there are a few good tunes in the set by a few of the standard artists, as prominently noted on the box cover in order to suck you in. However why purchase 7 cd's simply to pare it down to the equivalent of one good one? As well those cuts featured by these artists are not anything new and exiting if you already have a good collection of Moby and the like. A week too late for me to heed any advice after I made the purchase a local critic reviewed this set as "passionless tunes and mediocre producers" and in his words, "what good is bad music when silence will suffice?"

4 out of 5 stars try a little harder. (ps Beck is america's greatest artist).......2005-04-19

to the two morons writing reviews below- why dont you try knowing something about what you're saying before sharing your "knowledge" with the world. halo of gold is a skip spence song and the original skip spence song does contain the line "i walk the line" its sort of sampled into skip spences song writing the way a musical idea might be samples into a beck track. beck's music a great jumping off point into so many music styles and genres and whats best is its ART. popular music has become so generic, lifeless and artless, thank god we have beck to continue on in the spirit of the great rock and roll artists of the past. this compilation is cool but way to brief. hopefully someone will put out a more comprehensive compilation (theres definitely enough unreleased/unavailable beck stuff to fill an entire box set). halo of gold is one of the best beck rarities but if you dont want to pay the high price for "stray blues" you can get it on the tropicalia single. also check out the original of skip spence's album "oar." if you are into good boundary pushing music check out albums like miles davis "on the corner", funkadelic "free your mind and your as will follow", red red meat "theres a star above the manger tonight", captain beefheart "trout mask replica", t.rex "slider", beach boys "pet sounds" and groups like dr octagon, can and faust for starters.
dig it.

5 out of 5 stars Halo of Souled.......2003-04-29

Hey dudes. Halo of Gold, despite containing lyrics from I Walk the Line is actually a cover of the Skip Spence song. Meow.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MATERIAL!.......2003-02-03

Somebody without alot of sense took this CD back to the used CD shop. One persons waste is anothers gain, and in this case I was quite excited to get this CD for relatively cheap. I don't know how long it will take you to find every single release to get all of these MISC B sides, but one way or another I HIGHLY recommend you finding these songs. Beck borrows a line from Johnny Cash on Halo of Gold, which I am deeply impressed with. In fact, seeming as how Cash plays the Beck song Rowboat on Unchained, it looks like Beck returns the cover-your-song favor by recreating "I Walk The Line." Almost unfamiliar in Beck's hands, it is actually an instant classic, as the steel guitar (I think) twangs in the background as Beck belts out "because your mine I walk the line." The out of place drum sample that breaks through at the end of the song, initially seeming very random to me, is actually a sample of the signature boomchickaboom sound Cash founded his career on, and emphasizes the very obscure way Beck references "I Walk The Line" in this song. Indeed, the major part of the song has little to do with the original. "Halo of Gold" transforms "I Walk The Line" into a modern day version complete with new story line and drama, and captures quintessential Beck- profound knowledge of music history, and a huge capacity to borrow, sample and recreate sounds into something completely his. I also really like Burro, an absolute requisite hear for any fan, the greatness of this song is immediately apparent, especially for fans of the odelay album. (When my brother and I saw Beck unplugged last summer at a small venue, we drove up windows down blaring Burro for good effect.) I have "Electric Music and Summer People" on another single, but this is a different version and quite cool. Totally confused is straight off the Mutations/Seachange vibe and is an excellent song. My Brother really gets into "Brother," although I don't find it quite as stimulating but still very good. "Lemonade" is lo-fi rock that I never quite get into, but this is among the least annoying of Beck's. "Clock" is sheer groove that you'd wanna jam if you had a low rider with hydraulics! "Feather in Your Cap" feels like "Brother" somewhat, but is more acoustic and really captures the "Blues" part of the title. If you enjoy beck albums, take the time to get his singles. I have accumulated 2+ hours of Beck music, a large percentage not just remixes, not on any of the albums. "Halo of Gold" may be his absolute best song for me right now, although I couldn't possibly say that when "Nicotine and Gravy" is still out there! Since I got this stuff pretty recent, its like Beck just came out with two new great albums, Sea Change and MISC B Sides. Don't waste any effort finding these songs, then, Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars All great songs if you don't have them........2001-11-30

Many of these you may already have...but if you don't you should pick this up! "Halo of Gold" and "Feather in Your Cap" are both great tunes! Some of these are as good or better than those available as A-sides.

2 out of 5 stars ALL THESE SONGS ARE ON OTHER SINGLES.......2000-07-26

If you're a real Beck collector, then you already have these b-sides tracks. If not, then get this knowing that there's other b-sides out there floating around.

Plus 30 bucks for 8 tracks is wack.

5 out of 5 stars AON SchmAON, this album rocks!.......2004-09-09

This is the album that got me hooked on D&B! (and by hooked I mean completely addicted.) While I agree it was not what I expected when I first bought it, (way back in '98) this album is the only true re-mix of the AON collection. What exists prior to this album are collections of "Re-Edits" of AON's music, simple and recognizable re-constructions of their works. (yawn!) This is the AON completely deconstructed, and re-formed into a comprehensive collection of chilled out Drum and Bass bliss! I was on vacation when I first heard this and I had the time to really give it a chance. Before I knew it, these beats were re-running in my head, begging to be listened to again and again. Prior to hearing this record, I cast off Jungle / D&B as just simply being too fast. I liked slower, jazzy hip hop and trip hop vibes, but this collection opened my eyes to a world of completely awesome sounds that are as transcendental and moving as the original AON music it is re-mixing. The feelings I get listening to this album are more closely related to those I experienced as a young fan of AON's original works in the 80's, more so than in any other AON "Re-Mix" collection.

3 out of 5 stars Absolute disappointment!.......2003-07-13

If you decided to check this one out for the "Art of Noise" name on it? Ruuuun away from it. I actually had to throw it away, this is how upset I was. Imagine buying new CD by J.M.Jarre to find "Metallica" on it. If you want the best remix album by "Art of Noise"? Go to "Ambient Collection".

3 out of 5 stars A good drum & bass album.......2002-12-10

This is a good album for drum and bass fans. However, if you're buying this strictly because you're an Art of Noise fan, you'll probably be disappointed. You can occasionally make out connections to the Art of Noise songs that are being massively remixxed and that is a special treat for someone like me. Also, at least one of the songs is too repetitive even for me.

5 out of 5 stars It's not the Art of Noise, but what is?.......2002-01-10

At first glance, it seems true that this CD could just as well be called "Plastic Bananas: The Drum and Bass Collection" for all it has to do with AON. However, if you can get past this disappointment, it is an excellent compilation. Though there are few explicit sounds from the AON's catalog, this CD as a whole does as good a job in sketching a landscape in sound as the best discs of the real AON, such as In No Sense? Nonsense! or their newer Seduction of Claude Debussy. In fact, it may be the most imaginative CD of its genre I've ever heard, managing to be evocative while conforming to the rather strict DnB form. AON fans tend to be the kind who don't want to listen to the same trite sound over and over again anyway, and this disc is no less original or interesting than one written by AON themselves. Though I've owned it for years, it's still in the short stack of CDs I play often, which is high praise indeed.

1 out of 5 stars No Art of Noise Here!!!.......2000-10-11

I agree with most of the others. This is NOT THE ART OF NOISE. The only song that even has AON in it is "Something Always Happens". The other songs are unrecognizable. The Art of Noise are AWESOME. If you like cool remixes of Art of Noise, don't get this CD!! But since it has AON on it, it is in my collection, which I have every Art of Noise CD, album and 12" remixes made to date. HUGE FAN.

Dark and choppy, this 1.8.7. (a.k.a. Jordana) collection sounds like a temper tantrum thrown by a particularly hyperactive child. 1.8.7. specializes in drum & bass served loud, cold, and unrelenting, with touches of breakbeat and house music. The combination is hazardous to a club-goer's sanity, as crazed cross-rhythms, dub bass lines, and well-timed transitions inspire both tireless energy and flailing dance-floor maneuvers. Still, despite the constant speed and abrasive pounding, the music doesn't deal in Lamb- or Squarepusher-style off-times, keying on four-on-the-floor patterns. It deals in workable mix material and danceable grooves, like a pitch-black companion to records by DJ Dara and other straighter-laced drum & bass mixologists. On soundscapes like "Pittsburgh," though, such comparisons ring hollow, as 1.8.7. digs deep with creative pacing and samples to erect towers of music all her own. Throw it on the record player and prepare to stay up all night, like it or not. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Drum and Bass that will make you move!.......2001-05-19

More great d'n'b from, arguably, the United States' best d'n'b producer, Jordana. This album progresses from her previous album, "Quality Rolls" in the sense that this is definitely a tech-step masterpiece, while "Quality Rolls" was a masterpiece of its own genre. "The Cities Collection" is quite similar in style to the self-titled standout track of "Quality Rolls." The album's opener, Hollywood, is a great track by itself, but it also plays the important part of being the lead-in track to this album's strongest cut, New York. New York has a very choppy breakbeat sound to it, with low, dark, driving basslines underlying this soundscape. About halfway through this track Jordana shows her mixing skills by perfectly matching a Digable Planets' rap sample with her sick jungle beats. This is the best MCing, live or sampled, that I have ever heard executed over a jungle beat. It's not surprising that another standout track is Pittsburg, Jordana's hometown. This cut, along with every other on this album, practically makes you want to get up and move to Jordana's implorable beats. If you like AK1200, Dieselboy, Krust, or Konflict, then you will love this album. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars bomb drum and bass.......2000-09-25

I came across this cd at Little Five Points in Atlanta in one of the record stores. Already aware of 1.8.7's reputation as a hard and dark drum and bass dj and writer, i was delighted to see the featherweight priceprinted on the cover. Without further thought I bought the album and was dropped into Jordana's twisted since of drum and bass. She seems to take a little more constructive and imaginative approach to d'n'b than the average d'n'b writer. the first track is phat getting the album started off with a an upbeat remix of "the phantom menace", then proceeds into pounding drum and bass that is always up front and rough as hell. the strange part of this album is that it isnt mixed, but instead the tracks begin instantly one after the other and surprisingly seems to mix in its own way. i won't go as far as to say this is the best drum and bass cd i've ever owned because at times it is easy to see where Jordana got some of her ideas (reminicent of deiselboy and ak 1200 on certain tracks), yet this cd is definitely worth buying if you're all about fast and rough drum and bass. one extra note: this pounds on car sterio systems.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for driving.......2000-05-08

A great CD to drive to, but becareful not to speed. It ranges from some harder hitting beats to lighthearted breaks. However, i've heard that "Philadelphia" rips off Konflict Phobia. Overall a fabulous album.

is more 'jungle' than anticipated. Having heard some of the tracks from
Pandora, I was curious enough to try it out.
Turned out not to be what I thought, and the vocals are more of an
annoyance than anything. What could be a decent track winds up
sounding something like a karaoke on top of a good mix. Terrible vocals.
Reminds me of songs you loved to hate in a club...the repetition of
lyrics being utterly maddening.
Seriously considering hooking it up to a system and trying to remove the
lyrics entirely.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful and uplifting - best Nicolette album so far!!!!.......2006-04-06

This is definitely Nicolette's masterpiece. You can see the musical connection between this and her last two albums but this by far the most musically audacious, but catchy and infectious album to date. My fave is Groovy, a jiggly cover of the Simon and Garfunkel tune, but all the songs are pure gold. Ranging from ballady symphonic style electronica (fire in the heart) to drumnbass infuenced quirkiness (I Am where the party'sAt, Jenny) to to funky, soulful electronic pop (Wholesome, Soulfully) to whispering violins (Worship). It all sounds like a big colourful sonic celebration. And on top of it all Nicolette's amazing voice sends shivers down your spine. A unique treat - don't miss it!

which was sonically and musically all over the board and brilliantly experimental. However, Life Loves Us is Nicolette's most consistent release to date. Each track compliments the one before it creating a refreshing and uplifting listening experience. Presently, I AM WHERE THE PARTY'S AT, SOULFULLY and SUNSHINE are the tracks that stick in my head the most. The BIRTHDAY INTERLUDE is another in which Nicolette samples her friends singing Happy Birthday to her and turns in into a 30 second trip hop ditty. WHOLESOME is probably the oldest single released from Life Loves Us(and it is also where the album title comes from). It appears in a completely reworked (and highly superior) version on Plaid's Parts in the Post. The only setback to the disc is Nicolette wrote, produced, programmed and arranged every track. The absence of the production talents of Plaid and Alec Empire are obvious as some tracks (like the chorus of SUNSHINE or all of WORSHIP) are a bit murky and muddled with Nicolette's voice too high in the mix. A friend I played this for said it sounds like she got a Casio keyboard and plunked out a few songs and I can see his point. For example, the opening snyth swoops of SUNSHINE are frighteningly similar to the synth swoops sample on Music Generator for Playstation. It's not that bad, but Life Loves Us could have benefited greatly with an extra hand or two in the pot to stir things up a bit. Overall if you're a fan of Nicolette you won't be disappointed. Well worth the almost 8 year wait. 3 1/4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, great singer with a unique style........2005-10-22

I have most of the Nicollette CDs, and I love this one the most. She brings a bright sunshine and exhuberance to her music. It is like listening to a form of drum and bass, mixed in with electronica. Some of the songs are very infectous and I keep hearing them in my head, and I begin dancing.

So you wanna listen to some jungle but your coworkers dont know you party, so you dont wanna drop some dance floor terrorism on them or anything, and you refuse to degrade yourself with that LTJ Bukem easy listening stuff, so you pop this into your cd player, and everyone starts crowding around you trying to figure out how you got to be so cool. The boss gives you a raise, women swoon in your presence, and men want to be like you. And all you did was listen to a really, really, really cool jungle compilation.

This is dnb like portishead would do it.
