Middle-Eastern music has attracted tremendous interest from mainstream Western club DJs, perhaps more than any other type of world music. Perhaps this due the unbridled intensity of the singers, the acoustic instruments that somehow sound electric, or maybe because the protean rhythms are so accepting of anchoring beats and bass; whether applied straight-up-and-down or syncopated in any of several directions. In this co-production by Narada Michael Walden, Antonio Hernandez, and Oojami, DJ Nightshade (R.S. Ogden) puts a sexy, beat-happy yet non-confrontational spin on tunes by Rachid Taha, Bappi Lahiri, Hossam Ramzy, and other stalwarts. But the original material is tons of fun too and remarkably style-consistent. The Arab-Andalouse connection is explored on a few tracks, for example on Hakim's swirling sand-swept duet with Olga Tanon. Fans of dance music will certainly be transported, but oddly enough so will die-hard traditionalists--if they are willing to give this frisky but deep-hearted set a chance. --Christina Roden
