this is a kool dirty rock cd a most have in any rock collection worth its place

4 out of 5 stars I'm glad someone remembers how to ROCK!.......2006-12-16

Recently the local classic rock radio station here in Atlanta changed its format so that it now only plays modern rock, which essentially means an endless loop of Disturbed, Korn, Nickelback, and Linkin Park. What exactly does this have to do with Bullets and Octane's latest album In the Mouth of the Young? Just this: if I have a radio station that is supposed to be dedicated to playing new "rock", why in the hell do I have to keep hunting on my own for bands that actually ROCK?

I'm mainly a metal guy, but there are times when only a good straightforward hard rock album will do. I don't want emo or nu-metal or whatever-core. I want loud, fast, heavy ROCK. I want bands like Brand New Sin, Fireball Ministry, Black Stone Cherry, the Quill, and this band, Bullets and Octane. I took a chance on this album at my local used CD store based largely on the album cover, which has to be the coolest cover in just about forever. In the Mouth of the Young hits you like a heart attack from the very first notes of "Going Blind" and never lets up until the album is over. To my ears, Bullets and Octane sounds like Social Distortion meets Motorhead meets a nail-spiked baseball bat. For all the speed and aggression, there is still that underlying sense of melody that keeps you engaged and able to sing (yell) along with the songs.

This is good stuff, people. It's the kind of no-nonsense ROCK that you just can't seem to find these days. This is the kind of real ROCK that modern rock radio should be playing, but instead will completely ignore unless someone starts rapping over the album or whining about how g*ddamn melancholy they are.

5 out of 5 stars Without Bullets and Octane, what's left to sin for? .......2006-11-18

Okay. I have a little confession for everyone. I'm not a long-time fan of the band... hell, I only heard about them a couple of days before Family Values Tour rolled into Washington D.C. because I was offered a ticket to see one of my all-time favorite bands, Dir en grey. And actually, the members of Dir en grey are best friends with Bullets and Octane so I was willing to give them a listen, although I was doubtful of 3/4ths of the bands at FVT, given that their headliners were KoRn and Deftones. Which I dislike both of them, except for the fact that Jonathan Davis actually recognized true talent with Dir en grey and invited them on. Anyway. I was disillusioned already at the horrible performance of Walls of Jericho and was contemplating leaving the Pavillion until Dir en grey hit the stage until I heard the opening riffs of "Save Me Sorrow." And I sat straight up in my seat in awe. They were fantastic. They sounded so together and professional, yet so raw and intense. I fell in love instantly. Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet them that day (because I spent the money to meet Dir en grey) but they stuck in my mind. My boyfriend then bought me the album and I fell in love with every song on the album. They're raw, gritty, yet melodic and polished. You know that they have been playing together for a while with the sync they have together. I'm not going to sit here and detail critique the album for you... because that'll ruin the greatness of it. But take it from someone who tends to be a music elitist and turns her nose up at many bands and artists... and is a classical musician herself... if I sat straight up in my seat and wanted to buy their album instantly, they're definitely worth a listen at least.

4 out of 5 stars Plain And Simple: It Rocks........2006-10-27

Bullets And Octane may not be the most original band to come out this decade, but with "In The Mouth Of The Young" (the band's second album), there is a band on display who knows how to rock like the old school. It's rough around the edges, it's abrasive, loud and in your face. Together with Helmet mainman, Paige Hamilton, working as producer, these guys have no doubt delivered the effort to take them to the next level, or at least get a few heads turning.

Sounds Like: A happy medium between Papa Roach and Velvet Revolver.

The Good:
- The album breezes by, as each track flows into the next perfectly. It's an easy and fun listen.
- Hamilton's influence is evident, but luckily he doesn't go for the completely lo-fi sound he gave the latest Helmet CD.
- The musicianship is something to marvel at, somewhat resembling old-school Guns N' Roses.

The Bad:
- The vocals leave a bit to be desired at times. Frontman Gene Louis could use a little more range.

Hits: "Bathroom Floor," "Cancer California" and "Going Blind."

Future: Who knows. I mean, these guys deserve to get noticed, but it seems like any band who tries out a retro sound and does it justice gets ignored in favor of the kind of alternative/indie garbage that's been clogging the music scene for five years strong.

Personally: I'd love for this album to take off. These are the kinds of songs you wouldn't mind hearing on the radio or on TV a million times. There's something here every rock fan can appreciate. Whether you grew up on Motley Crue or Blink 182, you'll dig Bullets And Octane.

Best Listened To When: You're breast-feeding.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is mine now.......2006-09-29

I first heard this band when they performed on the Family Values Tour (with KoRn and Stone sour). I was blown away. I went out the next day and bought this CD. I love it. It is a great piece of rock music that gets usual rotation on my Gigabeat (I'm listening to "I Aint Your Savior" right now actually). My top 5 tracks are:
1. Mine Now
2. I Aint Your Savior
3. Save Me Sorrow
4. Going Blind
5. Cancer California
But there are no bad tracks. If I could only suggest 1 CD this year, this would be it (but thankfully I can suggest as many as I want: "Come What(ever) May" - Stone Sour, "One-X" - Three Days Grace, "Phobia" - Breaking Benjamin)hahaha! Bye...

Album Description

The life and sounds of the nineties come crashing into those of the fifties in this modern Rockabilly trio. Coming from a state known for it's tie-dyed bands, Colorado's Hillbilly Hellcats tell stories of skateboards and hippies as well as white trash, whiskey and trailer parks. America is listening too, as the Hillbilly Hellcats were the only Colorado band to chart in the College Music Journal's (CMJ) top 100 in 1998.

Rev it up with Taz features Taz Bentley, who does all the drumming on the CD. Taz is known for his 7 year association with the Reverend Horton Heat, including his appearances on the first 3 Rev. Horton Heat CD's.

4 out of 5 stars Neo Rockabilly.......2005-09-13

Some people don't know what "true" rockabilly is. "Rev It Up With Taz" is a taste of true rockabilly. Most songs are right on the money for making you tap your toes, whether you want to or not. There are only three or four that this disc could have done without, but that is strictly my opinion. Overall, it is really hard these days to come up with a CD that has every song rate a 10 and this CD accomplishes that on the majority. If you like to crank it up, this is worth the listen.

5 out of 5 stars Rev it up with Taz.......2005-08-23

I am the bass player for the band, and on the CD's, so I will not rate my own CD,but I would like to let anyone interested know that the song Dead Man's Party is being used in the movie Dead and Breakfast. (Starring David Carradine among others). This movie is now being released in theaters. (August 2005). The movie also has our songs Roadkill Cafe and Hillbillies on Speed in it as well.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta get it.......2005-01-31

I saw this album while looking for some reverend horton heat. I'm glad I did. This is definatly one of my favorite rockabilly bands. The titles alone were enough to make me want it. Chuck Hughes is a great guitarist. He's up there with the Rev, Brian Setzer, Eddie Cochran. The drums are great, The bass is too. This and "Our brand" are both highly recommended by me.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-09-02

I went to the family values tour recently and these guys played. I met the singer, Gene, before the show and he is totally cool. I also met Ty, the drummer and he is the coolest dude ever! These guys are totally down to earth yet their energy onstage is incredible! BUY THIS! I'm going to.

5 out of 5 stars High energy.......2006-03-09

I heard Bullets and Octane for the first time when they opened for... hmm, now I can't even remember who they opened for because they totally rocked! I bought one CD at the concert with only a few songs but I played it into the ground. These guys have such high rockin energy, it always puts me in a great mood.

5 out of 5 stars Explosive energy and excellent riffs..........2006-01-28

This album is like what I imagine snorting really good coke would be like. From the opening track, it's a raw sensation that digs its way into your brain and refuses to get out. The band is AMAZING live, with so much energy that it feels like drinking a pot of coffee. Their sound is reminiscent of older stuff from Aerosmith, Billy Idol, and The Clash, with definite elements of old-school punk rock that will have you headbanging, dancing around like an idiot, and cranking it up to maximum volume. My favorite track is "Bad Things to Bad People" simply because it is impossible to ignore; it slaps you in the face with the very definition of indulgent rock 'n roll.

If you like bands like Fireball Ministry, The Knives, and CKY, you will LOVE Bullets and Octane.

5 out of 5 stars wow this cd is great.......2005-12-21

this is a great underground band, which i learned about from the cities of evil tour. the music kinda has a 80s rock feel to it. the lead singer is great, kind of The Cult sounding. Almost all the songs on here are good, so buy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Nifty..........2005-12-04

I went to a show the other night at the UCI Bren Center where Avenged Sevenfold, Saosin, Death By Stereo and Bullets & Octane played and to tell you the truth I was only there for Saosin and Avenged. Bullets & Octane opened the show and no joke I fell in love. The lead singer worked the stage, the music and the audience. I swer they couldn't have gone wrong by opening up the show with them...they really got the audience pumped. I hadn't heard any of their music til that night and now I'm in love. Buy it..you'll love it!

2 out of 5 stars i must be missing something.......2005-12-27

only in recent years have i gotten into drum and bass after listening to industrial metal (ie ministry) and progressive trance and deep trance on the techno side. i heard 6th Session through a friend, taped it, and really enjoyed it. i later decided to get Dungeionmasters Guide, which remains my favorite D and B album. But i wanted more and scouted the internet (ie Amazon) for some recommendations. After reading the plentiful praising reviews for 97 Octane, it sounded like a mix i had to have.

After having this CD for a couple months now and listening to it enough to get an honest feel for it, i must say i'm very disappointed. Outside of 4 or 5 tracks on the first half on the album, it does nothing for me. When trying to figure out why---i realize it's because it's too simple and basic. It's essentially JUST basslines and various cymbal hits....not like Dungeonmasters or 6th Session that seem to have more going on, more commotion if you will. For this reason, i find 97 Octane a pretty boring listen. I need a greater wall of sound, a greater variety of sounds, and a higher-energy feel than this provides for me.
I've not given up on Dieselboy, as i'm now awaiting the arrival of Project Human, which i hope yields a better opinion. But this is one i don't expect to listen to very often.

5 out of 5 stars really good.......2005-08-12

this is easily dieselboy's best mix cd...i wish he still spun stuff like this instead of all that trancey d&b that he spins now....

5 out of 5 stars jungle essential.......2002-04-21

i've gotta agree with the speaker blowin comments...i've killed one of my car speakers and a boombox with this album (beware of substance - lf ant):P. If you've never heard a dieselboy album or seen him spin live, start out with this one. i've been listening to it for 5 years, and it still holds my attention from start to finish. superb mix-n-blend, wicked sub bass, and aggressive but not overly frenetic breaks make this a great driving album (almost as fun to drive to as dance to). big ups to mista higgins for holdin it down proper.

5 out of 5 stars Great DnB CD.......2002-02-24

When I was first introduced to Damien, I wasn't that big of a fan of the whole electronic scene, whether the music was trance, house, DnB, etc, I wasn't to into it, didn't listen to it much. Then my friend told me to give this CD a listen, and I was amazed. I instantly started downloading and buying techno and other electronic styles of music. I have to say this is by far my favorite or second favorite electronic cd in my collection. I recommend this cd to . . . anyone, really. That's how much I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-09-25

Once again damian proves that he is the worlds premier tech-step DJ. This disc represents a mix of different styles, tied together with his sublime style. This one takes a little more getting used to then his other mixes, but it satisfies that jungle urge. Granted, a few of the tracks are very forgetable, but the good ones more then make up for it. Any DnB fan should own this.

4 out of 5 stars Dedicated to the Memory of Maynard Ferguson - recommended for MF Fans.......2007-05-08

It is entirely appropriate that the first recorded tribute to the late Maynard Ferguson comes from the Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra. There is no more devoted follower of Maynard Ferguson, his trumpet style, and his music than Dan McMillion. Though no recording date is supplied, it is clear that the music on "High Octane" was recorded very near to the time of the great trumpeter's death. The CD insert includes this line, "This CD is dedicated to the memory of Maynard Ferguson, May 4, 1928 - August 23, 2006."

But in truth, all the Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra CD's are tributes to Maynard Ferguson. "High Octane" falls directly in line with the pattern of McMillion's previous releases (all of which are very enjoyable and well recommended). At least eight of eleven tracks on the present CD come directly out of the Ferguson book from the 50's to the 90's. And the three charts that may not be from the Ferguson book are certainly written in the style of the Ferguson band. All the charts are played with power, precision and enthusiasm by this excellent Florida based band. One of the great attractions of the McMillion Jazz Orchestra is hearing the Ferguson book played with full big band instrumentation. Hear for example, the trombone section on "Another Star" and the baritone sax on "Night in Tunisia."

McMillion himself plays Maynard's parts and while there was only one Maynard Ferguson, McMillion does a more than credible job. In fact, his power and accuracy and high note chops are often quite astonishing (e.g. "Danny Boy", "Four"" and "Hey There"). On "Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me" he passes Maynard's part over to lead trumpeter Chad Shoopman, who matches McMillion's power and chops. The band itself boasts some excellent soloists. Keith Oshiro shines on trombone and baritone horn, as do saxophonists David Moss, Tom Dietz and Dalton Hagler, trumpeter John De Paolo, and pianist Richard Drexler. Drummer Glen Bush is a strong and swinging though somewhat heavy-handed drummer. But then again this exciting music requires lots of power from the drum chair.

While "High Octane" is a tad short at 49 minutes, it is a warmly recommended tribute to arguably the greatest brass player of the 20th century. There is no doubt that Maynard Ferguson would have been be delighted by "High Octane." So too, will those listeners who love Ferguson's music or who have enjoyed any of the earlier CD's by the Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra. Dan McMillion makes no great claim to originality, but his tireless devotion to Maynard Ferguson and big band jazz is paying high dividends for lovers of this art form.

The second album of the post-Neal Morse era finds Spock's Beard settling into its more focused (if less openly adventurous) framework with increasing confidence. While there's no denying the irony that these champions of modern progressive rock sometimes find themselves locked into a retro-prog groove here, it's offset by an ever-ambitious sense of scale. "Flash Before My Eyes," the seven-part suite that dominates the album, reviews the life of its protagonist just as he's about to be struck down by a runaway truck. Anchored by a melodic motif reminiscent of Howard Shore's stately themes for Lord of the Rings and propelled by drummer Nick D'Virgillio's expressive voice, it gracefully soars beyond some awkward lyrical moments towards the inviting psych-pop realm of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. Elsewhere, the instrumental "NWC" fuses the aura of early Genesis with bursts of Alan Morse's solo guitar, while "There Was a Time" turns on familiar, harmony-rich metal-ballad conceits. "Watching the Tide" is a cut above, a Queen-centric slice of drama that showcases the D'Virgillio's supple vocal range. The bonus disc contains a self-deprecating "making of" video featurette, as well as five album outtakes and a handful of "Flash" overdub sessions. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Octane is the 8th release from Spock's Beard, the undisputed heavyweight champions of the new progressive rock movement; it also marks the second release by Spock's Beard on Inside Out Music America as well as their second release after the departure of former lead-vocalist and founding member, Neal Morse.

Octane (as with Feel Euphoria) continues to show an evolution and marked growth in the Spock's Beard sound. Still present are the trademark melodies, lush vocal harmonies and instrumental ferocity that elevated Spock's Beard to the top rung of the progressive rock ladder. However, Octane sports a more aggressive and heavier sound. There is a new power and immediacy to their music which should help the band to further blur the lines which separate musical genres and cross Spock's Beard over to new fans while also satisfying the expectations of their longtime followers.

The Special Edition version of the release will be packaged in digibook format with extended booklet and will contain an additional disc featuring 8 bonus tracks and a multimedia section.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A much better effort....perhaps the "statement" from Beard Mk II.......2006-12-13

Octane was Spock's Beard's 8th album (get it?) and their second following the departure of bandleader Neal Morse. Even though their previous album, Feel Euphoria, was good, Octane is better. It's a "statement" album, laying down the bluepring for this incarnation of the Beard, whereas Feel Euphoria, while good, was very transitory-feeling. This album has all of the band members firing on all cylinders (bad pun, I know) and really starting to sound confident in their new four-man format.

The album opens up with the 7-part epic A Flash Before My Eyes, which is about a guy who gets killed in a car accident and at the moment of death sees memories flash before him. If you listen to it and read along with the vignettes in the book, it's very powerful and emotional. The "overture", if you will, Ballet of the Impact, sets the story up. Every part is good, but my favorite is She Is Everything, one of SB's finest moments, with or without Neal. I don't know what one of the previous reviewers was complaing about when he said this was a disjointed epic. It flows better than A Guy Named Sid did on Feel Euphoria...maybe he didn't know what it was about and so decided to attack it. Who knows?

The rest of the album is solid to excellent...NWC is a great short instrumental, The Planet's Hum and As Long as We Ride are rockin', and There Was a Time and Watching the Tide, while kind of schmaltzy in places, are good ballad-type songs. I have the bonus disc, which has 5 extra songs on it that are KILLER. When She's Gone has some killer riffing and great, menacing lyrics. Follow Me to Sleep is as prog as you'll hear and is amazing, and Game Face and Broken Promise Land are two excellent songs. The short instrumental , Listening to the Sky, which is basically just Ryo's layered melotron, is cool and finishes off the bonus tracks. These should have been added to the album proper...a shame to keep these only on the special edition.

All in all, an excellent album, not one of SB's best but up there and a definite improvment over Feel Euphoria, which was still a very good album. A lot of people slag this album, but you should listen to it for yourself and decide. Once people accept that SB Mk II is going to be different than the Neal-era (how could it not be? He wrote 100% of the material then!) then you'll see SB Mk II is an excellent, albeit slightly different, prog-rock band and you'll enjoy them for what they are rather than what they aren't.

4 out of 5 stars Listen It!.......2006-11-15

At the first time seems that something is missing. But you can find this "something" listening the album again and you can appreciate the melodies and the lyrics of all the songs. Anyway I think that the band is not the same without Neal Morse, but the changes sometimes are necessary. To conclude: Listen It!

2 out of 5 stars Like a Monkey on Vicodin.......2006-08-04

Good music. Very talented. Some of the more symphonic parts could have come straight from an Alan Parsons album, which isn't a bad thing at all. Where it falls on its face is in the lyrics. "I was like a Monkey with his hand stuck in a jar?" Gimmie a break! I'm sure this is the only album in existence that uses "Vicodin" in a serious song. How they can sing lyrics like this and keep a straight face is beyond me. Let someone else write the words next time, please.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-02-21

Having been a fan of Spock's Beard for five years and being surprised at how great their first album, Feel Euphoria, was without former leader Neal Morse, I was anticipating another great effort when Octane was released, but I was very wrong.

The epic, "A Flash Before My Eyes," is way too cluttered, unfocused and messy. It seems like a bunch of songs that were just slapped together so they could have an epic and appease the prog rock fans. As a result, some of the songs sound incomplete. The gem in the whole mix is "She Is Everything," which has a great vibe to it and a nice solo by Alan Morse. On the flip side, "Surfing Down the Avalanche" is one of the worst rock songs I have ever heard.

"The Planet's Hum," to me, is the clear cut best song on the entire record. In fact, it is the only memorable one, aside from the aforementioned "She Is Everything." "As Long as We Ride" has a nice feel and a cool instrumental break, but the bad lyrics really are a detriment to the song. "NWC" has some cool things going on, but it really sounds like they had a bunch of different riffs and melodies and didn't know what to do with them, so they slapped them together and the result was this song.

I was also really surprised to read that they used multiple outside writers on this record. Bassist Dave Meros said in an interview last summer that over half of the album was not written by anyone in the band. Considering how excited they initially were to exercise their writing talents when Neal Morse left the band, to see them already using outside writers is kind of sad.

I am hoping they rebound and come up with something better next time.

2 out of 5 stars Poor hard rock/metal prog album.......2006-01-13

I was never able to get into this CD. To me the whole thing
just sounded like a bunch of hard rock tunes strung together. There was nothing "strange", "interesting", or "different" about the album. Nick D's voice is as plain as they come, and his ideas seem just as bland.

As a another reviewer menttioned, what happened to the bottom end on this album? Also, can't they turn down the distorted guitars just a bit, and use it a bit more sparingly?

Feel Euphoria was a fine album, as it was actually striving to stretch musical boundaries. I still listen to the album nowadays.

I have not listened to the Octane album for several months; it's just boring. The music jsut doesn't grip you and pull you in like, say, King Crimson's "Power To Believe" or Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia".

If you want to hear real prog, then pick up Glass Hammer's "Lex Rex" or "The InConsolable Secret".

5 out of 5 stars Save Me When I Die.......2006-03-31

Seemingly possessed by the demons inherent in a rock'n'roll lifestyle, Too Slim has penned these 11 original songs testifying to trials and tribulations, but with salvation nevertheless close at hand. Despite a possible tongue-in-cheek perspective, the songs possess a certain sense of spirituality. For example, "Walk on Water", the percussion-heavy opening track, tells of the guidance offered by an older and wiser mentor philosophizing about human limitations.

Not all the songs are about regret, guilt and fear of retribution. However, these sentiments are expressed quite vividly on the seemingly Robert Johnson/C.C.R.-inspired "Mississippi Moon" - "....hellhounds runnin', hot after my tail [and soul], on a moonlit night on the swamp with the snakes and the alligators". The guitar-explosive "Soul Perspective", showing a slight nod to Robin Trower's "Day of the Eagle", and "Missed that Train", both underscore his determination to overcome negative forces.

Rather than berate himself too much for his weaknesses for alcohol and women, as evidenced in the radio-friendly "Brown Bottle Rock", the sultry double-entendre of "Broad Minded" or the slinky rockabilly edge of "Some Kinda Momma", Too Slim rejoices in these celebratory vices. Maybe he's not quite ready to be saved yet!

The nostalgic, but overly-long "Wish I Was Fishin" and "Oven Burnin' Woman" are funk-blues-jazz-rock mixtures, the latter offering a sensual analogy to wood-chopping not unlike blues-harper David Rotundo's "Can I Come In Your Kitchen", which gives a new meaning to "cooking"!

"Flatback Flathead", a slide guitar scorcher with a driving beat, is the requisite car song. It's right up there with Deep Purple's "Highway Star", David Lindley's "Mercury Blues" or Golden Earrings' "Radar Love".

The CD closer is an excellent smooth jazz instrumental showcase that reinforces the tightness they have accomplished as a team, while displaying the tremendous individual talents of these three musicians.

4 out of 5 stars BEST KEPT SECRET IN THE U.S. !!!!.......2005-08-01

Since seeing this great band live several times I have bought 4 of their albums but I think this is the best one I have. Tim "too slim" Langford is a great guitar player with tons of energy. Tee shirt says "Straight Whiskey Blues With A Southern Rock Beer Chaser" Great way to describe their music. I recomend you buy this album and if you get a chance to see them live, don't pass it up!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Blues.......2003-09-11

The new album by Too Slim is in my opinion his best to date. The band just seems to keep getting better. I have seem them live twice in the past year and their live shows are great. The band works hard and Too Slim (Tim Langford) can play the guitar. I picked up this album after their live show in Helena several weeks ago. Be sure to pick this CD up and all their other albums also. You won't regret it. See them live if you get the chance. It is well worth it. Play on!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best CD yet........2003-08-25

Thanks to Greenburo I got an advance copy of this CD. Being from Spokane myself, we're real homers for Tim's music. I think this is the best CD from these guys yet. I highly recommend it . And remember, "chop, chop, chop, all night long!"

5 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Blues/Rock Album of 2003!.......2003-08-20

I purchased the CD at one of their live shows and I can't quit listening to it. Too Slim is an incredibly talented guitar player/song writer. This CD is pure americana with influences ranging from CCR to The Allman Brothers to ZZ Top and Johnny Winter. Buy it you will like it!!!

There were two essential qualities to the Cult's music: Billy Duffy's soaring guitar lines and Ian Astbury's distinctive vocals. When that partnership dissolved in 1995, the Cult floundered. High Octane Cult wisely focuses on the band's better years, from the release of Love in 1985 to Sonic Temple in 1989, including hits like "Fire Woman" and "She Sells Sanctuary." The fact that the latter turned up in a car commercial both indicates the Cult's position in the pop-metal pantheon and serves as a depressing reminder of the fate of much guitar-oriented rock. At least the same thing hasn't happened to Metallica. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars clever compiltation.......2006-07-01

This a fine collection of songs from The Cults earliest albums, beginning with "Dreamtime" through the exceptionally simple titled "The Cult" and has therefore a lot to offer, although the subtitle "Ultimate Collection 1998-1995" is not accurate, because 2 songs date from 1996. It even consists of 3 singles ("In The Clouds", "The Witch" and "Resurrection Joe") which have not been part of any of the albums spanning this period (with the exception of "The Cult Singles" album, that is, which has most of these songs also) and more, contains the scarce and unknown track "Beauty's On the Street", to my knowledge never released before. Even if you don't heard this song before you can easyly recognize this as an example of a The Cult song (which is recorded somewhere at the time when no specific album was gained for and shortly afterwards the band collapsed). Not included of course are songs from the latterday album "Between Good and Evil". But altogether this is a very good introduction to the music of this band. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars If you get only one Cult album, ..........2006-03-30

this is the one you want. Just about every song is very good or great. One of the most underrated bands in history. Listening to this collection will make you scratch your head and wonder these guys aren't world famous yet crap like Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback and Limp Bizkit has gotten major airplay over the years.
My only quibble would be that they edit out the Indian chant intro to "Wild Hearted Son" and they fade out of "Heart of Soul" a little bit quicker than on the underrated '91 album "Ceremony."

4 out of 5 stars This album rocks pretty hard.......2003-01-08

I wasn't a "Cult fan" - I just liked a couple Cult tunes I heard on the radio. Man, these guys jam. What this means is that I wouldn't be a big fan of their "Love" album style, but I love their "Sonic Temple" and "Electric" style. Which is not to say that I don't like the hits here from "Love", but that's the point of "best of" collections, no? Well, you could buy the 3 albums listed above and listen through the songs you don't like, but even then you'd be missing the first cut on this CD - "In The Clouds" - which wasn't released on album, and is in fact one of the hardest rockin' Cult tunes, and probably my favorite song. Put it on, turn it up, and drive on.....

5 out of 5 stars Firrrrrrrrrrrrrre.......2002-03-01

5 out of 5 stars Time makes it better........2001-06-24

I bought this CD two years ago cause I wanted the song "Firewoman". Then the rest of the songs grew on me. after two years of playing the songs on this CD, I have come to think of The Cult of a band I should have been listening to for years. I am now a Cult fan for life.

    4 out of 5 stars It's really nice.......2005-01-25

Yeah this is kinda un-Orbital but it's not such a bad thing. The score that they make is creepy and it wouldn't be something you would listen to everyday ( unless you're seriously unstable ) but as a soundtrack it sounds thoroughly listenable and cohesive and not just something random thrown together. They make a good go at it and is worth the effort. It's also got this creepy ambience to it which is almost beautiful. Occasionally it gets into really noisy industrial territory so perhaps you'd have to be a big fan of that particular genre to enjoy this music. However this wouldn't be the best place to start if people are looking to get into Orbital. Look elsewhere if you are a beginner, this is only for the hardened Orbital fan ( and even then people are divided on this ).

4 out of 5 stars Octane, A SCORE not an Album.......2004-10-16

Everyone is knocking octane on here it seems... but thats because there going in thinking its an album by orbital. Thats what you have to understand, it isn't! It is a score by Orbital, a score written for a movie, thus it is background music. Some people are saying its a very mediocre soundtrack. Thats because it's not a soundtrack either, its a score! Soundtracks are a grouping of songs (and sometimes score music) onto a cd that tend to somewhat fit the movie, this music is played during the credits of the movie, and rarely during the movie. A score is normally written and produced for the movie to be played within the movie. Soundtracks and scores are vastly different, this is a score.

This musical score is well written and good enough to stand alone, but that is for those who enjoy scores. It has a good repetition of themes, but not the extent where it gets annoying. At the climax of the album, orbital wrote some more upbeat stuff which is closer to what they're known for.

I enjoy this album, and you probably will too if you go in expecting the right thing... and that is a movie score with a dark theme. Has a sort of house and trance feel to it, to some extent. The score reminds me a bit of scores to the Resident Evil and Silent Hill games, but a bit more musical, and not as industrial.

2 out of 5 stars This is just so... NOT orbital........2003-12-18

When i first heard this, i had to double and triple check whether it was the real Orbital or not. It is. And I don't like it. It's kinda nice for something calm to listen to, but SO not worth $35. Look towards In-Sides for GOOD orbital.

2 out of 5 stars Do NOT Import for $35.......2003-11-25

This one is pretty much the epitome of mediocrity as far as sound tracks are concerned as it is just that, a soundtrack and little more. It definitely has a movie feel, and only a movie feel. I wish I could say I have seen the movie that this goes with, but that seemes even harder to obtain than this CD.

There are maybe two tracks I would consider listenable if you aren't in the mood for pure movie ambience. Those being Moment of Crisis and Initiation.

Even if you are a die hard Orbital fan such as myself I would not pay the premimium price to get my hands on this. I'd try Ebay first. It might turn out to be much cheaper that way....If you are looking for good Orbital for listening, look elsewhere.

    3 out of 5 stars octane review.......2003-10-28

i'ts hard to judge this soundtrack cos it's not what youd like to hear from orbital. think of it as orbital does classical! buy in-sides instead, the best electronic album ever made.
