4 out of 5 stars Great Techstep album.......2007-02-06

This is my first Ed Rush/Optical CD (I'm relatively new to the Drum N Bass scene), But given the quality of the tracks on Chameleon, I can't wait for the next album. It might be a bit heavy for people really new to DnB, but if you like a good techstep, neurofunk and even a bit of jazzstep in your listening queue, you cant go wrong with this one! The sweet drum n bassed version of Weezer's "hashpipe" (Bloodmoney) is easily one of the most high energy tracks on the album!

Album Description

Ed Rush & Optical are two of the best known DJ/producers in the drum `n' bass, and dance music scene. Before the two created the now legendary Virus label, they had already made quite a name for themselves - while Optical was engineering for Grooverider, Goldie, and Jumping Jack Frost, Ed Rush was releasing materials for seminal labels such as No-U-Turn and Prototype.

They have DJ'd in virtually every corner of the globe, and done remixes for top producers like Josh Wink, Reprazent, and most recently Candi Staton's "You've Got the Love," the song that was featured on HBO's hit series Sex and the City. They've also appeared on many of the biggest drum `n' bass labels including Prototype, V Recordings and the legendary Metalheadz. Their first artist album Wormhole is widely regarded as the best drum `n' bass album of all time.

For Out of The Box, Ed Rush & Optical have put together a killer selection of dance floor hits from the genre - featuring heavyweight tracks from Dillinja, J Majik, SS and many more. Bonus DVD features a documentary about the artists, including tour diary footage, exclusively shot DJ sets at WMC 2004, Toronto, and Switzerland, numerous special in-depth interviews, a special 10-minute clip with production tips, also brief interviews with Andy C, Red One, and Fierce talking about the impact of Ed Rush & Optical on the drum `n' bass scene.

5 out of 5 stars Should be 10 stars.......2007-02-08

What is there to be said that the reviewers below have not already. As a trombonist, this is one of a handful of recordings that brings me to my knees. Fabulous playing, fabulous tone, fabulous intonation - Joe Alessi is world class. This is my favorite of his CD's, and I own them all. Trombone players: This is an essential recording.

5 out of 5 stars Joseph Alessi.......2006-07-02

This record is mislabeled: it is really music played by Joseph Alessi, the principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic. You should fix that. Joe Alessi's playing is a whole level above that of any other trombonist playing now or in the past. He is the first player of his instrument to deserve to be referred to as a major artist.

5 out of 5 stars The Ideal Trombone Sound.......1999-09-13

Young trombonists everywhere - in my opinion, this is how a trombone should sound. Mr. Alessi has the perfect sound, the sound that every serious trombonist aims for. Though the C.D. doesn't boast a variety of music (it's predominantly 20th century American), it is all fantastic music, the best of its kind. The last track is amazing, five of the greatest trombonists around, all playing together, it's outstanding. Serious trombone students, this is a good addition to your C.D. collection. This is the sound to aim for.

3 out of 5 stars quality drum and bass.......2004-07-30

when Ed Rush and Optical released WORMHOLES in 1998 they were acclaimed as the best in the business, mixing dancefloor drum n'bass tracks from a tech step approach, yet with more soul and rhythm than many of their contemporaries. However, this 2000 release, THE CREEPS, did not have the same revolutionary sound, though good in it's own right. The sound was less adventurous and diverse. Many of the tracks sound too similar to each other, which is a week point for the album. Aside from that, this duo consist of two of dnb's most qualified producers. The follow up to this in 2003, THE ORIGINAL DOCTOR SHADE, is a return to form. The duo reminded us that they could make tracks that were intelligent in sound yet jumping, and that their tunes did not all sound the same.

2 out of 5 stars More drum than Bass.......2001-12-18

Hmmm..a great disappointment. Far more lightweight drum than heavy bollock shaking Bass in a basically very overtly "techstep" and gutless CD.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't deliver.......2001-10-29

The CD started well, a good attempt at mixing a MC with DJs onto a Drum & Bass CD. Why this doesn't occur more often within the Tekstep sub genre is beyong me (LTJ Buken and MC Conrad do it all the time within their sub genre).

Overall the tracks didn't stand out and the CD is just the same as any of the more recent (and superior) releases from the likes of Dieselboy, Bad Company, J Majik, Metalheadz, Total Science etc.

2 out of 5 stars THIS JUNGLE HAS BEEN CHOPPED DOWN.......2001-10-11

This was an hyped up album, and i was expecting a hardcore jungle album but this is about as soft as it gets. It borders on club/ dance music. I also experienced similar problems with Dillinja and both Bad Company release's although they were much better than this commercial tripe.

If you want a decent jungle album, Ram Trilogy's molten beats goes someway to providing a decent album. Blackmarket's compilation and some 1.8.7 tunes are also good but avoid this if you want a hardcore jungle album. Buy if you want a soft-core uninspiring d&b album.

4 out of 5 stars Ed Rush & Optical presents :: Virus Vaults (Virus, 2CD).......2005-12-01

By: Luca Maini, Igloo Magazine (www.igloomag.com)
(11.30.05) Over the years, Ed Rush and Optical have been renowned for their leading role in producing some of the darkest drum'n'bass, but also for regularly losing the DATs of their studio productions. Back in 1998-'99 there was also a site dedicated to all the unreleased Virus stuff, called The Place To Be (allegedly coming back very soon), and i remember spending hours of internet connection at my high school listening to all those dubplates on crap speakers with my friends, addicted to distorted bass. So it's kinda strange listening to Virus Vaults now; I do remember with nostalgia tracks like "Vendetta," "Zoner" and "Side Effect" and finally after something like seven years I can appreciate them in full effect on my stereo. It's really what I always wanted, plus the big surprise when listening to unheard tunes that sound fresh and fat, showing no sign of time.

Still, it's not enough. There are two major faults in this release that prevent Virus Vaults from reaching the absolute masterpiece status while scoring nonetheless a really superb album. First, the inclusion of a track like "Flute," dated 2005, shows sadly that the creative vein of the duo nowadays seems to be gone. It's not far from all the so-called new jump-up stuff going on these days, that only means a scarce production in favour of a (supposed) dancefloor effect, but to me it's plain boring material, repeating itself over and over. Second, there's a mix CD, which is indeed a good idea, since not all the unreleased tracks could have been recovered from dusty DATs or crackling warped dubplates, and it would have been nice to get all the remaining dubs mixed together. The problem is that it's mixed in a fast as you can fashion, a good thing when you see Andy C or DJ Friction live, but it's complete nonsense when you want to hear the perfection of sick tunes like "Slip Thru Rmx (Amenizer)," "Sonar VIP" or "Rigmasher," the Holy Grails of drum'n'bass. A couple of minutes don't do justice to such beautiful works.

So, the only solution is to focus on CD one and rinse to death the mysterious "Vendetta," the Hancock inspired twisted funk of "Headhunters," the heavy distortions and the massive beats of "Can U?" and "Side Effect," or the ominous darkness of "Big Slick." Not to talk about the absolutely incredible "K-Wire" and "Zoner," the first is a relentless assault of menacing alien bass driven by infinite layers of breaks and percussions, the latter is an unstoppable crescendo from a quite stepper to a growling technoid monster. And obviously you can't forget the nice addition of "Gro-Bag," heard in the Wormhole mix and now in complete form, and "Hitek Dreams," previously published on the glorious Prototype and always a classic. In the end, I really love this record despite the aforementioned flaws, but the best work from the duo will always be Wormhole. We must thank the guys for remembering how good drum'n'bass was in 1997 (ok, now I'll wipe my tears). Luca Maini, Igloo Magazine (www.igloomag.com)
