Counterfeit

Editorial Reviews

From URB Magazine
In the past, Cirrus has often been condescendingly dismissed for their ties to both the traditional rock and rave worlds. Returning after four years out of the scene's scope, the breakbeat masters amped on too many energy drinks are now kicking ass in the name of those past nay-sayers. Comprised of DJ/bassist Aaron Carter and guitarist/keyboardist Stephen Barry, Cirrus recently became complete with the addition of drummer Jim Chaney and particularly frontwoman Laura Derby. It's Derby's Sarah-Maclachlan-meets-Nelly-Furtado vocal styling that adds an eerie trip-hop feel to Counterfeit and is the impetus behind the band's newfound confidence and sophistication. Now the band's strength lies in its diversity; they can do hardcore dance jams like "Straight Laid Out" and well-oiled pop songs like the VH-1 ready "You Are" with equal aplomb.

What's most impressive is that Counterfeit still comes off as an album. From the catchy-like-a-bad-jingle "Ghettoblaster" to the serious breakbeat battery of "Unbreakable" to the soft, sensual touches that Derby dollops across the down-but-nowhere-near-out "Half a Cell," the listener glides around its vast, varied terrain with ease. Touches of gothic drama and industrial histrionics augment the yin-yang balance of the album, making Counterfeit the genuine article.

Take lyrics like "You are/the caged one who is finally free/you are/the oasis in the desert heat" from the gloriously effervescent "You Are" to heart and Counterfeit becomes a perfect road-trip soundtrack for that last great cross-country jaunt before adulthood comes calling. Enjoy it while you can.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-08

I absolutely LOVE this CD!! I would highly recommend it to everyone. My only wish is that it had more songs.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless..........2006-12-27

Now, I'll admit this. Even if Martin Gore were to release a cd where he sang the Hokey Pokey for an hour straight, I'd buy it and love it and listen to the whole damn thing. His voice is that beautiful, that pleasing to the ear.

With that said however, anyone with working ears and a real sense of music would have to admit that Counterfeit is a masterpiece. Even if I'd already known any of these songs before hearing Martin sing them, I'd still forget that they are actually remakes. Martin sings these songs with such intensity and meaning that it sounds as if he's the original writer.

My two personal favorites are "Compulsion" and "Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth". Compulsion, the opener track, has a very strong melody and great beat that makes it imposible not to move. What a way to start off an album!! "Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth" is just simply beautiful. Martin sings it with such fragility and softness, as if he's singing a lullaby. His voice, high and lilting, is clear and perfect on this song, as it is perfect on pretty much anything that he sings.

I only wish it were longer than six tracks. But, it is a must have if you are a Depeche Mode fan.Hell, even if you aren't a Depeche Mode fan (though I can't understand anyone not being a fan, since they are literally the greatest band on Earth, period), you should still check this out. If you buy this cd, it will stay in heavy rotation in your cd player.

5 out of 5 stars essential for DM lovers.......2005-12-04

Gore released this solo project at what I consider to be the height of DM's darkest and most creative period. Hearing Gore's depressed and morbid versions of these songs will give you more than a clue to where DM's darkness came from. Motherless Child is the standout track on this album, but all the rest are also excellent. The only problem is that obviously there aren't many songs on here, so the album is short. I'd liked to have heard more, but it is well worth purchasing because every song is very good. Must have for DM fans of the Music For The Masses/Black Celebration era.

4 out of 5 stars Everything depeche rules........2005-11-15

This Martin Gore solo abum rules. I love this album. I love all the remakes of course I'd never heard the originals but who cares. The song mother earth is my fav . The whole album is a deffinate must have for any depeche mode fan.

3 out of 5 stars A smile in the crowd.......2005-09-27

The album is okay.
I am surprised that nobody mentioned "A smile in the crowd". Martin Gore's version of this song from The Durutti Column is absolutely amazing!

Yikes,is this the same band that did "Back on a Mission"? Thanks but no thanks.

5 out of 5 stars The Cirrus album you really want..........2005-11-23

Mmmm...a tasty recipe of some big, funky beats and a great, smooth easy to audibly ingest voice. -And she doesn't invade every song. I love techno but this has some mainstream crossover hit capability...if the American Media wasn't so fundementally rooted in evil! Previous albums diplay a less matured yet still viable techo band. Don't believe anyone who assocites Cirrus as soundling like Prodigy. Prodigy kicks arse while with Cirrus it's more like a stern hiney patting. With the singer chic, they've added some swirling to the patting, which is nice.

2 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?.......2005-04-13

It just happens to be pure chance that I have run across Cirrus' CD Countefeit. Unfortunately, I only pop It in to hear "Hit the Decks, Intermission, and Straight Laid Out" which is a dissappointment. Maybe I haven't become accustomed to his style to be able to appreciate this yet or it might be that I'm searching for something else. I look forward to the past CDs for guidance.

5 out of 5 stars WORD.......2003-11-13

Fo' shizzle. This album is just straight dope. A great listen the whole way through, and the perfect CD for that brand spankin' new sound system in your car. Loud, heavy beats mixed with some of the most soulful female vocals I've heard in a long time help to make this CD a must have for fans of the electronica genre. If you're into the Crystal Method or BT, you will dig this. I just bought the CD today and I haven't been able to take it out of the stereo. This is my first introduction to the music of Cirrus, and they definitely do not disappoint. Pick it up if you want some great, driving, up-tempo beats to pick you up. If your looking for a great electronic CD that will stay in your collection for a long time, then this is your disc d'ya dig?

4 out of 5 stars CIRR-I-US!!!.......2003-10-14

GET IT? Oh, never mind! I'll just review "Counterfeit"--a masterfully done CD that was nothing like I thought it would be. The beats are wild and funky and the placements of Laura Derby's vocals on certain tracks break up the monotonony of this often innocuous style of "breakbeat"/cheerleader music. The sophisticatedly groovy, "Half a Cell," "You Are" and "Boomerang" are sure crossover hits, that is, if they can manage to get picked up by these radio stations that are overly-saturated with Top 40 garbage. Other killer tracks on "Counterfeit" are the outrageously funky "Dragon Lounge," "Intermission" and "Matter of Time." Everything else on "Counterfeit" has to grow on you, but are great songs for the gym, and for when you need that extra jolt when cleaning up the house or yard. All in all, a very impressive CD--Nothing "Counterfeit" about it!! GET IT? Oh, never mind!

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars A great single, but a bit pricy.......2001-01-01

There seem to be some questions surrounding this highly priced, yet very rare, single. The high price would be due to the fact that the album is no longer sold in America, and was from before the time of Limp Bizkit's original album, 3 Dollar Bill Y'all$. And, yes, there is a different American version, no longer sold, where the only difference is that it has no unedited album version on it.

The three remixes on the album are good, but sound too much alike, especially to be worth almost 20 dollars. The "Lethal Dose Remix" and "Lethal Dose Guitar Remix" both have heavy guitars in them with great sound quality that stands out. Both versions of the song stand as more metal than rapcore. However, both of these sound too much alike one another. As for the "Phat Ass Remix", it's very electronic based and a lot simpler than the other mixes on the CD. We then have the album version, which is also available on Three Dollar Bill Y'all$, and the edited version, which is just shortened and has a few lines cut for radio.

I would say that this title is not worth nearly as much as amazon.com is asking for it, and all of the titles on here are available on bootlegs. If the CD can be found for a much cheaper price, I would recommend picking it up, but 20 bucks is quite pricy for a single.

5 out of 5 stars CAN LIMP BIZKIT GET ANY BETTER!.......2000-07-23

THIS IS A GREAT IMPORT! THIS IS A DEFINENT BYE. IT'S 5 AWSOME VERSIONS OF COUNTERFEIT FROM 3 DOLLAR BILL YA'LL. IT'S KINDA PRICEY BUT WORTH IT!

5 out of 5 stars Not so Limp.......2000-05-20

To anyone who hasn't experienced LimpBizkit, you're missing out on brutal world truth. This album has the attitude and integrity of harsh musical reality. Fred reminds me of what Nirvana fans used to think of Kurt Cobain in the sense that he doesn't say what everyone wants to hear, but rather what pleases him, and he transelates that into his music alot better too. For Ian McKay fans this album is a must. For anyone who's willing to chance an open mind, get this.......you won't be sorry.

      5 out of 5 stars I was wondering..............2000-01-26

I haven't heard this cd yet. I was just wondering...if it is a single why does it cost so much? Also, what's the difference between this cd and the other Counterfeit Countdown cd? I thought there was only one until I saw this one. Anyone can e-mail me at FredDurstsGrl18@aol.com. Please let me know what's up :) P.S. I know I rated it five stars but honestly I haven't heard it yet. I'm just assuming it's good.

I looked at the cover and instanty went to the counter the buy it, The sound is like nothing i have herd before. Its a good mixture of hard core and melow, to anyone who thinks that they copy KoRn, you dont know sh** about KoRn or Limp.

Hopefully they will tour Aussie land soon, (plenty of nookie here for them!!)

        6. A Cappella

        Album Description

Machine Language is a collection of six recent chamber works by the American composer/violinist, Dan Trueman. Trueman's music is a sensuous and hypnotic blend of instrumental sound, subtly transformed through the use of computer applications. Quirky, sweet natured, and always texturally transparent, these six compositions herald a distinctly post-modern American voice, at once harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated, yet possessing an almost folk-like directness of expression. In "Counterfeit Curio" the "old noisy recording" which ends the piece is in fact a fake, and the tune it holds is in fact original, and grows out of the music that precedes it. "Traps" is a delicate exploration of a simple computer process, where the computer memorizes and transposes selected music from the gentle and sustained string writing. In "Machine Language", the longest piece on this CD, wispy but insistent figures very gradually morph into gently swinging lines in what the composer calls, "geological, as opposed to computational swiftness". "Spring Rhythm" was inspired by two disparate sources: the medieval motet and the famous "spatter" paintings of Jackson Pollock. "Still" was completed on 9/11/01, and was premiered just north of the WTC the following month. Trueman writes: "I went as close to the site as I could that evening. While not normally prone to paranormal thinking, I found it eerie that the musical ideas I was dealing with-continuity vs. discontinuity, slowly descending, vanishing gestures, recollection, disintegration, senses of place-were so overwhelmingly at work that day". "A Cappella" is a short, intimate piece, and was inspired both by the sheer beauty of a cappella vocal ensembles and by the abstract texture of some electronic music.
