5 out of 5 stars Suprising.......2007-06-15

After purchasing many compilations I began to fear that I would never again hear a cd as good as my first (Siddharta Vol. 1) but this cd woke me up. Some songs are better than others. "Siempre Me Quedará" for example is one of the best songs I've heard in months and all are consistantly good except for one song called "Carmela" which sounds like something my grandparents would dance to.
When I realised that Putumayo made many discs with many different themes without sticking to 1 theme I assumed it would be commercial and weak, but the disc outdoes most buddha bar or hotel costes compilations!
A great Listen, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Speak Spanish or Not, This CD is Great.......2007-04-10

I am a Spanish student and am nearly fluent. It's fun to listen to this CD and know what they're saying, but even if you can't speak a word of Spanish, this CD will retain a special place on your shelf (or a permanent place in your CD player). The music varies from tangoes to salsas to mambos. I especially enjoy listening to this CD in my car because... it's just plain fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and Sexie.......2007-03-13

All the cuts offer a tasty bite of Latin flavor. Latin Jazz and Euro fusion. Great listening music or as a back drop to accent a dinner party. The music is captivating, enchanting, and just a pleasure to listen. This is the kind of music that goes great with a sunset, wine, and a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Learn Spanish and groove at the same time: Latin Lounge.......2007-01-04

I just bought this CD at the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was playing over the loudspeaker in the gift shop and I was hooked. Happy to help the local economy but I could have saved some $ if I had bought it on amazon. This is an amazing CD. Not only is the music great, but you can also improve your Spanish by listening to the lyrics. If you like groovy Latin music, buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Putumayo.......2006-12-15

PUTUMAYO is awesome music, a real eye opener. Similar in many ways to the BUDDHA BAR approach but different flavour.

Anyone who enjoys this cd may want to try MANU CHAO (proxima estacion ... ESPERANZA) for another trully great Latin American music.

This is definitely one of the easiest CD's to pop in, along with Nuevo Latino .... anytime anywhere ... just makes you enjoy the moment so much more.

Putumayo's latest excursion into chill-out features twelve urbane tracks that, even at their most laid-back (and Brazilians have raised this state of being to an art form) are saturated with a languid, sweaty tropical ardor. Icy, metronome-like beats and electronica are powerless against a Carioca heat-wave, just as a cold Brahma cerveja (beer), while momentarily refreshing, cannot affect prevailing weather patterns. But the irrepressively creative mixmasters of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro seem to revel in these very incongruities, frosting florid acoustic sounds and warmly human vocals with subtle yet transformative computer-generated wizardry. Notable tracks include "E Depois" by singer/actor Seu Jorge (City Of God, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zizzou) and emerging star Luca Mundaca's "Há Dias." In Bebel Gilberto's "August Day Song," romance is compared to a drenching downpour; her slightly nostalgic style often evokes that of her father, sixties icon, João Gilberto. Additional reasons to purchase the album -- the trilingual liner notes offer a recipe for the national caipirinha cocktail and a portion of profits from the CD will be donated to Rukha, an organization dedicated to rescuing Brazil's street children. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Bebel Gilberto and her clones.......2007-03-27

Putumayo is renowned for their superb presentaions of world music in compilation form; this is another in a long line of fine discs from Putumayo. The samba and bossa nova sounds of Brazil are presented in their newest incarnations as lounge music which features ecentric-electro-beatz for the lounge music lover. The easy going rhythms are ideal music to chill to. This disc gives you a good overview of some of the things going on with the music from down Rio way. The carnival gets slowed down for some nice down tempo electronica mixed with the cool vocals in Portuguese. The ever sexy voice(she could sound good in any language) of Bebel Gilberto is featured on " August Day Song" for a sensual song remixed by King Britt. Many of the female vocalist sound very similar but that is a good thing if you like the warm earthy vocals of Bebel. There are jazzy numbers too that are bossa nova like "Previsao" by BossaCucaNova that features another Bebel clone in Adriana Calcanhotto. Other Bebel sound alikes are the soft undersated vocals of Mariana De Moraes as featured on "Como Vou Fazer" by Dois Irmaos, the barely distinguishable vocals of Marissa on "Saudade Fez Um Samba", Marcela on "Os Grilos" and Katia B on "Parece Mentira." Not everything is Girl from Ipananemaesque as Seau Jorge demonstrates on "Bia" that is a kind of a heavy vocals style mixed with light airy music for an interesting effect and "Aqua de Coco" by Marcos Valles. Pretty much everything else sounds very Bebelesque. This is a nice mix for discovering more talent that sounds like Bebel Gilberto. Recommended for lounge lizards basking on the beach or poolside with an umbrella drink or iced soy green tea.

5 out of 5 stars It's Groovelicious!.......2007-01-04

I love this CD it quickly became one of my favorites. It's mellow yet funky. Something you can dance to or just listen to while you are cooking or cleaning the house. I also like to listen to it at work and have gotten many inquiries. If you enjoy world music you will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Another great compilation!.......2006-11-06

I love Putumayo! This is one of many great CDs of World music. I can't decide which Brazilian mix I like better, though: Brazilian Lounge or Brazilian Groove. You can't go wrong with either one!

5 out of 5 stars A must have cd.......2006-10-12

I heard this cd playing at work and feel in love with the music. It was just very up lifting to listen too. everybody keep asking the girl what kind of music she was playing, and where could they get the cd. I found it at virgin for $10.00 and got it. I love this cd and you will too if you like jazz and world music!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chillin' the Brazilian way.......2006-09-19

Brazilian music is perfect for relaxation; after all,Brazilians invented bossa nova, the most relaxing form of jazz. This compilation is a lower-key,chill-out companion to Putumayo's "Brazilian Groove."

Highlights-
1)Ha Dias-Unusual instrumentation,a nearly-reggae rhythm makes this song particularly catchy.Luca Mundaca's silky voice gives a jazzy flair to the melancholy lyrics about loneliness.
2)Previsao-A joyful song with a retro flavor.BossaCucaNova makes this sound like a Sergio Mendes&Brasil 66 original.
3)Agua de Coco-Another song with unusual instrumentation&danceable rhythm makes this catchy.Very funky.
4)Mariana-This song has a reggae rhythm (making it samba-reggae,perhaps?)Since it is a simple tune,it will stick in your memory.
5)E Depois-BiD (who collaborated with the late Brazilian music master Suba)collaborates with Seu Jorge on a song that sounds like a theme to an '80s primetime drama like "Dallas" or "Falcon Crest."
6)August Day Song (King Britt remix)-I had the "Tanto Tempo Remixes" album loooong before I got "Brazilian Lounge." I don't get it why Putumayo chose to borrow from Six Degrees (which is great with world techno, while Putumayo is great at world acoustic). This is a great song;it's on a Putumayo compilation 5 years after it was released (Bebel Gilberto has been famous for awhile now).Great remix,"funkified" according to the "Tanto Tempo Remixes" liner notes by Philadelphia DJ King Britt.
7)Saudade Fez Um Samba-Another happy song with sad lyrics. The title translates as "Sadness made a samba."

This compilation is a must for any Brazilian collection!

5 out of 5 stars The smooth sounds of Cafe d'Afrique.......2007-07-24

If youre looking for a very relaxing, mellow and laid back sound Cafe d'Afrique is just the thing for you. The house style drum beat that is featured on a majority of the tracks keeps the entire album exciting, fresh and upbeat, while the melodic vocal melodies and synthy chords keep the feel of the album mellow and sophisticated. Its definite lounge material and would be a great addition to anyones party playlist. Its sound is very trendy and would serve as great background music for any social occasion. It is definitely a great representation of the New York City SOHO nightlife scene, while remaining accessible to the average listening situation as well. I highly recommend it.

I found what I was looking for at Amazon.com. I had been hunting it for a while. I ordered it and it came quickly. It was exactly as stated and I am now happy. thanks

5 out of 5 stars Like a small box of expensive and delicious candies!.......2007-06-12

The sound is the best I've heard on this album, with rhyhmic percussions that make you want to move. Consider Day Tripper, the Beatles tune, where it's lead guitar lines are transferred to a latin-tinged mambo type rhythmic pattern. Many of their favorite songs are here: Mais Que Nada, The Joker, One Note Samba etc. There is much more presence heard on this album than ever before, with clean and spacious highs and lows. The only negative comment I have is that at only a bit over 25 minutes long with only 10 short cuts, this is like tasting a small box of expensive, classy and delicious Brazilian candies. Give me more! more! Why didn't they add some outakes? But......those 25 minutes are pure ecstasy.

5 out of 5 stars Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.......2007-05-13

I found this particular CD to be excellent to listen to. It reminds me very much of the mid 60's, the artist's singing is of high quality and the samba music sounds are great.

I recommend this cd to all people who love brasilian music.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa nova brilliance!.......2007-03-02

From the frenetic opening song 'Mais Que Nada,' to the comforting 'Berimbau,' this record is a surefire winner. If you're new to Mendes and his five million incarnations of 'Brasil (insert year here),' then this album just might be the perfect starter, as 'Mais' is no doubt his best-known hit single. Of course, you could always check out the NEW version of that song on his new 'Timeless' album with Black-Eyed Peas, but if you're not crazy about the funky urban reinvention (as am I), then by all means check this original one out. It'll melt all your worries away within seconds!

4 out of 5 stars Great sound & performance; but so-so packaging.......2007-01-22

I would submit this review for any and all of the recent A&M and Verve releases from the Brasil '66, beginning with Segio Mendes's debut disc (here) with the band. Unlike his contemporaries from the post-Bossa Nova wave in American jazz circles, Sergio Mendes carved a whole new genre, stylizing Brasilian sounds with jazz, and accesible popular tunes of the period. These works were greatly accentuated by the amazing vocal talents of Lani Hall, which breath new life in this pristine re-mastering. On another level, however, the running lengths of these discs are bothersome. At just over 30 minutes, it is hard to imagine why any record label could justify not issuing two-for-ones. At a retail cost of 5 or 6 bucks, there would be no room for complaint. But at $9 to $12, it seems unlikely these discs will be in print for very long.

The electrification of acoustic Middle-Eastern music dates from the 1980s, when Algerian rai superstar Cheb Khaled (now known simply as Khaled - the dropped honorific meant "kid" or youth) released his groundbreaking masterpiece, Kutche. It is now commonplace to hear melodies and instruments as old as the desert sands juxtaposed against languid, trippy vocals, while a relentless 4/4 beat is pounded home via sampled, backbeat-driven snares and weighty bass lines. However, the 12 artists on this set for the most part manage to have their fun without bruising the delicate, mysterious beauty of the original traditions. Songs from Iran, Lebanon, Morocco, Lebanon, Algeria, Turkey, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, and a couple of Western locales emerge transformed by clubby synth vamps and anchored by feisty, two-ton bottoms. The treatments come across as sexy, droll, playful, startling and/or tragically hip, and just about any listener will certainly find something to enjoy. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars groovy arabic sounds.......2007-07-11

I checked out a number of these putumayo lounge cd's and this was by far my favorite. The music is varied and lush, with a combination of female and male singers. It's a great cd to listen to when I am cooking or entertaining. If you like middle eastern instruments and vocals, check this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music .......2007-05-25

I am a teacher in a classroom filled with 2 year olds. I LOVE music from different countries and different cultures and firmly believe that our children should be introduced to worldly music. I put this CD in for the first time as the children were waking up from nap. One girl started bobbing her head and arms to the first track, and others followed suit. It's not a fast pace dance cd like they're used to... so they had to listen, and figure out how to move, it was very interesting, and fun.

I love putting this CD on in the background while we do activities and work. The flow of this CD is beautiful! I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Just getting into world music.......2006-11-18

I'm in the military and every time I walk into a "Green Beans" coffee shop anywhere in the world, they have Putumayo's music on. This was the first album I purchased right at the coffee bar, and I've not been dissapointed. I went to their website (a tad more expensive than Amazon) and just ordered 2 more albums. I can't wait to get home and share the music with my husband, who plays a mean dumbeck.

5 out of 5 stars Putumayo's Best Middle Eastern compilation.......2006-09-27

"Sahara Lounge" is a highly underrated album. It's got a glorious diversity of music, showing the Middle East in all its exotic glory. When I first heard this CD playing in an imports store,I was entranced.

The opening track,"Shiraz",is a powerful instrumental from Sharif that draws you in.Bahia El Idrissi uses his background in Sufi chant to sing an enchanting song. The lyrics aren't in the liner notes, but they aren't necessary. One can hear the vastness of the desert in his voice.Maya Nasri's "Khallini Bilijao" is a powerful song of unrequited love.Soap Kills' "Dub4Me" is another great instrumental."Cleopatra in New York (Zim Zam Mix)" doesn't seem to do much with Cleopatra,or New York, but it's wonderful.Yasser Habeeb's "Elama" is a hypnotic chant.Ilhan Ersahin, who also has a track on "Euro Lounge",plays his special blend of Turkish jazz. The Jasmon mix of Mohamed Mounir's "Hanina" is delightfully loungy;if you want to hear the original, check out Putumayo's "North African Groove." Justin Adams' "Desert Road" is a great meditation on the North African desert. Finally, there's the lounge mix of "Lili s'en fout." It's been taken too seriously by some reviewers. It's meant to be fun,and it is.

"Sahara Lounge" is a perfect downtempo,chill-out companion to "Arabic Groove." It shows the breadth and diversity of Middle Eastern music. It's a perfect introduction to Arabic music.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Afro-Schmaltz; Not Feelin' It.......2007-04-10

I already feel this review may be more than slightly unfair, since I bought the product sight unseen (sound unheard?) and wanted it to be something other than what it is, if you follow me. I don't think I was too far off the reservation expecting it to be chillout/downtempo stuff with an Afrobeat influence -- read the product description -- but what it actually is is mainly indistinguishable from your late-'80s-early-'90s soft-jazz adult-contemporary FM station of choice, only, you know, in South Africa. Ellora Ghosh brings some nicely morbid vocals to track 4, but it's canceled out by track 10, "Hands on a Miracle," over which the spectre of Amy Grant hangs grinning ghastlily; anything with even a mild Xtian influence makes me flee like Dracula. I guess it was too raj of me to expect music from Africa to sound, uh, African; take a lesson from me and learn that inflexible adherence to outdated stereotypes will burn you every time, kids. Nice packaging, though.

5 out of 5 stars Family music bonding.......2006-07-18

My two boys (age 2 and 7) LOVE this CD. We play it almost on a daily basis and they dance around all over the house to it. After a year, it still has this effect to them. Their favorite track is the 2nd one. I rarely get to listen to the whole CD through before they are jumping around asking for "TRACK 2! TRACK 2!"

This is by far my (our) favorite Putumayo compilation!

5 out of 5 stars A cocktail party for the ear.......2006-06-14

I received this CD as a gift from my younger sister&I STILL enjoy it.It's worth every listen.

This CD kicked off Putumayo's Lounge series, giving it an auspicious start. There are tracks I enjoy more than others, but it isn't a weak album;there aren't fillers. The best tracks are those by Pink Martini,Nicola Conte,Jasmon,Mo'Horizons,Gotan Project,Hamid Baroudi,Montefiori Cocktail,Arling&Cameron, and Blue Asia.Mau Mau&Dissidenten aren't my favorites;as you can see,99% of the CD is pure perfection.

The music uses a variety of styles.Nicola Conte,Jasmon,as well as Arling&Cameron use Bollywood as inspiration."Shiva's Daughters" is loveably cheesy.Hamid Baroudi&Blue Asia make haunting Middle Eastern melodies.Mo'Horizons&Gotan Project have more Latin flavors.Montefiori Cocktail turns a Brazilian bossa nova tune into kitschy bliss.Pink Martini from Portland,Oregon (being from Oregon,I'm proud of them)gives a nod to chanson.

This CD is intoxicating;it's a musical margarita.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for Variety and Fun Listening.......2006-05-25

I have had this CD for a while and I really enjoy it. I actually play it quietly in the background when I teach Pilates and the class LOVES it....every time I use it at least one person comments on my "great" music...I always share the title with them. Great music is meant to be shared!!

4 out of 5 stars Definitely recommend.......2005-09-02

Putamayo always puts out great albums, and this one has a great beat, especially good in the background when you have people over.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2005-04-17

Putumayo's "World Lounge" had only one drawback, as does their other CDs, and that's that it's too short. This CD spans around an hour, with 11 songs, and I think that's way too short for a compililation like this. That aside, this is a great CD, filled with some of the biggest stars and Hits of Europe and Asia. If you're not a fan of HouseBeats or Techno, I don't recommend you purchase this. If, however, you are, then buy away!

3 out of 5 stars One of Putumayo's better European compilations.......2006-06-30

Europe is a mixed bag musically, despite all the disparate countries now being the European Union. This explains the varying quality of Putumayo's European compilations;while I enjoy "Greece:A Musical Odyssey",with its combination of modern&traditional elements as well as "Athens to Andalucia",I find "Paris"&"French Cafe" sappy&annoying.

So it is with "Euro Lounge." The Lounge series is one of Putumayo's best series."Euro Lounge" isn't the strongest, but it's still good.It has a continental sensibility, reflecting France,Italy, the Netherlands,Spain--and even Macedonia&Turkey.

Highlights-
1)Un Simple Histoire-Thievery Corporation adds its own trip hop twist to chanson.
2)Limbe-An ethereal composition from Italy. It's also got bhangra, which makes it worthy.
3)Salpica-A funny techno Latino tune.Mambotur has a sense of fun.Now I should get some Senor Coconut, with his techno Latino twist of Kraftwerk with his "El Baile Aleman."
4)Girl-A mysterious,jazzy tune from Turkey.Smooth Turkish jazz--it's Turkish delight.
5)Sweet Sadness-Another easygoing,bittersweet tune from Italy.
6)Stojne Bre Mome Kocansko-A hypnotic tune sung by a septuganerian from Macedonia.
7)El Ultimo Habitante del Planeta-A humorous tune from Spain, complete with a theremin fit for a '50s sci-fi movie.
8)Voulez-vous?-Arling&Cameron at their cheesy best.

"Sempre de domenica"&"Non Sarai Mai" are okay compositions from Italy.

While not the best of Putumayo's Lounge CDs,it is one of their better European compilations. It's a relaxing CD,fit to accompany tapas&Sangiovese.

1 out of 5 stars Euro Lounge Best of the Series.......2005-09-20

I bought both World Lounge and Euro Lounge, Euro is the best by far!

5 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2005-04-17

This CD does a good job as Putumayo's second installment to their lounge CD collections. With beats from all across Europe, this CD goes to the heart of Euro-Lounge music. This is one of the best lounge CDs I've had the pleasure of listening to and am quite impressed with it. Also, the cover art-work, in my opinion, is very cool. I verily recommend this album to any and all who are fans of this type of music.

4 out of 5 stars A very good compilation of artists, I must admit I knew only.......2005-01-13

of Thievery Corporation before I heard this, I discovered it at my local library and the title intrigued me enough to check it out and I really was astounded at the variety of music they had, ever since this I've gotten more into downtempo electronica, trip hop, acid jazz, and it was all because of this album,

I still listen to it on a regular basis and enjoy it very much. I personally recommend trying it out first by downloading songs by these artists on iTUNES but that's just me and my online music shopping obsession, so far I think I've spent around $175 dollars online on iTUNES which is way more than what I used to buy when I bought CDs, I can go on about the advantages of iTUNES but this isn't a review of that is it now? Anyways, it's not a high price at all so check it out if you want, or you can do the iTUNES thing but, whatever.

5 out of 5 stars gets you in the mood..........2005-01-11

i discovered this cd while browsing in a small shop in kapa'a, kauai. we spent the rest of our holiday listening to the gentle beats of salpica and limbe. i am addicted. when we got home, i promptly purchased an s-tone and mambatour albums - we were not disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars **Let's chill out - light some candles and break out the wine!**.......2007-06-23

Great tunes! I bought this CD because I wanted some music that was sort of like "smooth jazz" but with an Asian ethic vibe and I was happy to get just that. As the title of my review suggests, this is great "chill out" music. I like to light some candles, play the CD, and sip some wine and unwind after a stressful day at the office. Ahhh! To me, this is a little bit of heaven on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Eastern Grooves for Chilling Out.......2006-10-02

Another stellar release from Putumayo, this CD focuses on ambient/lounge music from Asian artists. The whole CD works as a wonderful compilation. As others have said, theres not a single track to skip over. Many of the songs are completely new, and have never been released in North America until now.

Needless to say, the strongest influences on this CD come from the Indian subcontinent. Nitin Sawhney's "Koyal" has a mellow Bollywood sound, complete with flutes and female vocals. Deepak Chopra and Biddu Orchestra both showcase South Asian percussion, while sitars are featured in Nataraj XT's "Space In...". And then theres "Water Down the Ganges", collaberation between Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas that runs for more than 10 minutes! But theres also other stuff too. "Campuhan" by Blue Asia and "Angels of the Island" by Bali Lounge draw upon the rhythmic music of Indonesia. Ancient Future weave together a lively blend of Indian and Chinese sounds. And the Yoshida Brothers mix ambient sounds with traditional Japanese instruments on "Fukaki Umi no Kanata". The final track, "Dreams of Happiness" by XCultures, draws upon and reflects all the same influences as the others and is a perfect ending to the CD. It'll stay with you long after going off.

This is an incredible CD, whether your dancing to it, driving out someplace late at night, or just chilling at home. You'll get hooked on this CD after the first song. Especially, as others have already pointed out, if you liked Putumayo's other CD "Music from Tea Lands". Like that CD, this compilation showcases artists from across the Asian continent, but in this case there is a more ambient/electronica feel to the songs. Nonetheless, the two CDs complement one another perfectly. Indeed, the band Ancient Future is featured on both CDs. If you liked one, then you'll certainly like the other. So do yourself a favor and go out and buy this CD. Your ears will thank you later.

5 out of 5 stars Putumayo's further travels into Asia.......2006-06-13

This is superior to the mixed bag of Asian Groove;it has more variety, but it also sticks to its lounging theme. It is wonderfully meditative. It's a fit companion for Music of the Tea Lands (I've put both in a CD player&put both on random shuffle--they're compatible)

There isn't a single weak track on this.

Highlights-
1)Fukaki Umi No Kanata-It's no wonder the Yoshida Brothers have so many New Age albums. They have the perfect blend of Japanese&electronica.
2)Koyal-A haunting trip-hop take on a Bollywood song.
3)Ja Nam-A reggae take on a traditional Vietnamese song.Ancient Future as great as usual.
4)Bali Lounge-It's loungy.Like "Campuhan" before it,it uses an Indonesian theme.
5)Funky Guru-Wow!Prem Joshua is worth further exploration. This is worth singing along or dancing to.
6)Water down the Ganges-More Prem Joshua. While most pop songs are only 3 minutes long, this clocks in at 11 minutes. And worth every minute.
7)Dreams of Happiness-A haunting song.

While many people would dismiss New Age music as snooze-inducing&synth-heavy (think Yanni or Enya!),this album lays those worries to rest. This album is perfect for lounging, writing,or yoga.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Indian Trip Hop.......2006-02-25

All the tracks are Indian flavored so while it's Asia, it's a pretty narrow focus.

It's not really 'loungey' in the correct dance sense, it's more trip hop - at best, you might call these tracks mid-tempo chill but a more accurate description is trip hop.

Unlike some other discs masquerading New Age as Trip Hop, these are all fine tracks with solid musicianship and are real trip hop tracks.

Other than KOYAL which is a flat out spooky track (and the only actual chill/lounge dance track) - the others all blend into each other - nothing really wrong with consistency but nothing else really outstanding.

3 out of 5 stars Good collection of Asian sounds.......2006-02-25

As an introduction to various artists of this genre it does it's job pretty well. Plus I found it a good addition to my collection.
The tracks selected have depth and interest which stands up to repeated listening.
With the inclusion of such masterful artists such as Prem Joshua this can not help being pretty good.
If you are buying this album, do not bother with getting Asian Groove as it is not up to the standard of this album.

Lebanese disco? Well, stranger things have been hits. Certainly, the three Beirut DJs behind the eponymous R.E.G. Project--Ralph Khoury, Elie Barbar, and Guy Manoukian--couldn't get a better introduction onto the international scene than at the hands of Paris DJ-cum-haberdasher-cum-restaurateur-cum-record-mogul Claude Challe. Challe's hipster cred will doubtless boost R.E.G.'s chances of success in Europe. R.E.G. Project's frenzied sound--a plainly hedonistic mix of Arabic swirls and wind instruments and thumping, percussive beats--arrives at the intersection where East meets West: indebted to both but faithful to neither. But things don't start out that way. Opening tracks "Free At Last" and "Lost Love" unfurl slowly and ambiently, as if reserving energy for the metered cacophony yet to come. By the first version of "Harem" (it appears twice) we're on a dance floor halfway between North Africa and the Middle East. Whether consciously or not, the R.E.G. Project conjures the ghost of Germany's phenomenal pan-African combo Dissidenten who, like the best fusionists, also follow the map of the heart, not the head. --Kim Hughes

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but much of the same........2007-03-12

My husband & I are both fans of Claud Challe's and have most of his albums. However, we find that some of the albums tend to be repetitive, and its almost like the tracks are just reworked, but essentially the same. If you are new to Claude Challe, then this is a good compilation to have.

5 out of 5 stars Piece of heaven.......2004-06-13

Most people familiar with my reviews knows that I am an enormous fan of the downtempo music, especially of the Buddha Bar series. Claude's work with the Buddha Bar series is impressive to say the very least. I first came across his name when I first saw this particular cd at my local Borders' bookstore. I listened to a sample of the cd and loved what I heard. I love Middle Eastern-influenced dance music. Today I struck gold when I found a used copy of "Near Eastern Lounge" in the used cd bins. I immediately bought it (along with the new DJ Tiesto cd, and the latest by Fountains of Wayne).

I didn't realize until I read the cd booklet that R.E.G Project is three Lebanese djs and that this incredible cd is a sample of their work. Claude Challe was smart to take these three guys under his wing and to expose the rest of the world with their incredible work as djs. The music is an amazing blend of traditional Middle Eastern music and modern house music. The results is a pure joy to listen to. The thunderous epic "Piece of Heaven" is evidence that the R.E.G Project is a force to reckon with. I loved how the beginning of the cd starts off very mellow and eventually picks up the pace after the third or fourth track. I loved all the songs. There wasn't one song on this cd that I didn't like or felt that it was out of place on the cd. Hopefully the future will be bright for these three talented men, as well as for legendary dj Claude Challe. I felt like I hit nirvana when I listened to "Near Eastern Lounge".

5 out of 5 stars This has won me over.......2003-05-13

I first reviewed it, And I was to quick to judge . I began to love it and listen all the time. The clincher was hearing it in Morocco. I began to feel what Claude was introducing us to. This is not Claude but three other guys putting out some really interesting music. If they continue I see only room for improvement and look forward to it. Check out "spirit of Buddha Bar" by DJ Ravin it is fantastic as I have ever heard him spin in Paris.

2 out of 5 stars Techno nightmare.......2003-03-18

I love this D.J. But this album has me wondering what he was thinkging. It has great intro's and background fusion but then there is this (Rabbit thumpin, spaz arobics, Techno beat) mixed in that ruins 80% of the songs. It is horrible like the way Techno used to sound when it first came out bad bad bad!. I tried to love this CD because everything else I have by this artist I love. I think he made this as a joke, it just has to be a joke it's that bad. I threw it out my car window after trying to like it five plays later, I dont know how much caffine he must have had before creating this but I am surprised it did not kill him.
I hope anything after this CD that this artist makes is absolutley not like "Near Eastern Lounge" There is nothing "LOUNGE" about it. I only gave it two stars because He is an amazing artist with the sad exception of this one CD, This CD sould not even be rated.
