Great band at their essential best.......2005-08-23

I seem to be one of the few fans who first met this band in a live bar show, rather than catering to the kiddies, but their mix of humor with touching insight captured my love and has held it for almost 15 years. I don't know why I waited to buy this album, but one of the middle-year albums was over-produced and I got a bit fearful. However, this really captures their original sensibility, and any fan will recognize the voices and harmonies that have always characterized this duo (with a couple guest instruments thrown in along the way). Here there are no joke songs or kid stuff, but just an excellent mix of swinging toe-tappers with poignant thoughtfulness.

Those who are used to the gentle humor of the kid music will enjoy the way that Keith and Ezra bring their big hearts and sunny outlooks to the general themes of good (adult) rock -- dreams about the future, getting through the hard times, love and relationships, etc. I never get tired of an album like this; these guys are operating down where real life is lived. Every song is very strong and this CD keeps finding its way back into my player...

All around talented team..........2005-06-27

As I write this review, my husband and I just returned from seeing the notorious duet at a small venue in the country. It was a rather intimate showing for my first time to see Trout. I can only say wonderful things about these guys. They played for almost two hours straight, peppering the audience with songs from every genre. These guys know how to cover all the bases! They performed kids' songs, love songs, and even some rockin' good tunes.

I digress...

They played a good selection of the songs from Closer to the Truth during the show. I found the songs so entertaining and harmonious that I bought the cd directly after the show and listened the entire way back home. Now that I have witnessed them live, I cannot get enough Trout! This cd is an excellent example of the musical range this duo can cover. The tunes are all catchy and you will find yourself singing along.

These guys may win awards for their children's albums, but they can DEFINITELY win over adults as well.

Only Two Years To Go.......2005-04-20

For my twentieth wedding anniversary, I do not want jewelry; I want to go hear Trout play their grown-up music at a club-anywhere.

This album is part of the reason why. As the mother of a lot of kids, I do love their kids' music, but this album lets me overcome my slight embarrassment at loving a kids' band and say "But, look they do make fabulous 'grown-up' music too.
(Whoever said they were "a parent's guilty pleasure" in a professional review is spot-on)

The elements that make their kids music so great are also present in their adult music. They are immensely listenable. Tuneful and lyrical in places, biting and funny in others. Their adult music also contains that wry wit that makes their kids' stuff so uproarious funny. The fact that they explore many styles of music means that there is a repeatability factor for their albums and they won't get boring.

"Dreaming", "Closer to the Truth", "Alberta Postcard" and "Almost September" paint pictures with both the words and the music. They are poetic and lovely. Then they turn around and give you a great catchy, funny song like "Dangerous" in a completely different style.

The wit shows through in "Old Things" and "After You've Gone" (which is one of my favorite Trout Songs). The first time I heard both, I laughed. The 200th time I heard both, I still got a chuckle, despite the fact that I knew what the punchline was.

Trout Fishing works very hard to make sure their finished product is of top-notch quality. That the songs are well-crafted (I use that phrase a lot when writing about them, but it's true), well-sung, well-played.

So, all in all, this is a great CD (do they make any other kind?)
I was a Trout fan from the moment I heard them play the first note-kids or adult stuff, they never disappoint.

Well Played Kid's Music.......2002-07-18

Trout Fishing In America make kids music, they do it well, and the album probably will stand up to the death play the kids will give it, even with adults, although I highly doubt many adults will listen to it for it's own merits. If you need a CD for your kids to listen to that won't drive you crazy, you have found it, but otherwise this is probably not a CD you want to own.

A return to early Trout.......2000-08-20

Closer to the Truth is a cd that rekindles the emotional music of Trout Fishing in America that was prevelant in Truth is Stranger Than Fishing. Every song on Closer to the Truth is a powerful emotion. There is no bad song on this cd. The albulm starts off with Dreaming which sets the listener into a daydreaming mood and goes straight into a remeniscing melody (Old Things). A light-hearted skeptical shortly follows (Dangerous). You will be humming the chorus all day after that song. Alberta Postcard will paint you a picture and make you want to visit Canada while There You Go will bring you back to the mortality of life. The icing on the cake is the finale (The Sun the Moon and Stars). This is their best song on the CD and will bring you to tears. It took Trout 10 years to match the quality of Truth is Stranger Than Fishing, but Closer to the Truth matches it and then surpasses it in their best Adult albulm to date.

Spectrum Too Narrow.......2007-01-29

I'd have to say after seeing these guys last night in Seattle there's no way I could pigeon hole them into any sub-sub genre of rock. They've gone and made a sound of their own out of many many influences. I came to the show not knowing who they were and I left a newly minted fan. With my ears still ringing I can attest that the guys killed it, I'm sure I'll be hearing more of them soon!

I don't usually listen to this type of music, but I'm glad I picked up this album. It is a classic. Get in on this now before they blow up so you can truthfully say that you liked them from the beginning.

A Wonderful Introduction to Beethoven's 'Fidelio'.......2003-06-29

Many people who have not been exposed to opera are intimidated by the very thought of it. Modern opera-house performances with supertitles have been very helpful in dispelling that condition. Here is another method of helping people get comfortable with the great operas. Naxos has already put out educational CDs - all written by Thomson Smillie - for such masterpieces as Mozart's Magic Flute, and Così fan tutte, Verdi's La Traviata and Aïda, Puccini's La Bohème and Tosca, Bizet's Carmen, and others. Here we have Beethoven's 'Fidelio,' his only opera.

The approach is this: First, there is a short introduction to the social, artistic, and political background of the composition of the opera and its story. Then - using Naxos recordings of the opera, in this case their wonderful recording of Fidelio [really one of the best available, in my opinion; only the 1960s recording conducted by Otto Klemperer is clearly better] - they turn to a leisurely recounting of the story of the opera with frequent recorded selections from the corresponding music. Smillie's text also points out many of the musical felicities along the way, e.g. 'listen to how the voices combine, each character singing his or her private thoughts, during this sublime quartet.'

The narration is neither too esoteric nor too 'dumbed down'; an intelligent older child would be able to understand it. I can easily imagine that this series is already being used in music appreciation classes, and if not, they should be. All this is helped by the clear narration by British actor David Timson, who also occasionally acts out some of the important moments in the plot.

All in all, it's hard to imagine a better introduction to the operas in this series.

Two good reasons... plus 58 others.......2007-05-08

Hidden in this vast compilation of Bluetones tracks is an undiscovered and hard to find "gem"... "Nae Hair On't"... a beautifully gentle, incredibly atmospheric acoustic/electric guitar workout that will, if you haven't heard it (as you probably haven't) take your breath away. Five stars on its own plus, for the price, you get no less than 60 tracks including all the hits and their equally atmospheric interpretation of a superb "lost" 60s classic, the Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina". Two good reasons - plus 58 others - to take the plunge.

Great,exhaustive collection.......2006-09-22

This 3CD version of A Rough Outline is the definitive collection of Bluetones singles and B-sides, containing EVERYTHING from 1995-2003. If you have this set and their 4 EXCELLENT studio albums (and the Singles compilation) you have everything they released as a single in any format. This is especially important since their newest single, My Neighbour's House, is out this month (Sept 2006).

And the music? Just stunning English guitar rock, ranging from jangly, chiming anthems to more rockin', burning tunes and everything in between. And that's just the singles! The B-sides are a mixed bag, as they almost always are, but the 'Tones are up there with Suede, Blur, and Mansun as British bands whose b-sides are worth collecting ALL of them! In short, get this set if you're a Bluetones fan!

when this album was released, it caused a stir in the dance world. a most impressive release to include "dance to dance", "there's a woman", and the ever popular "dancer" & "the visitors". for those dance completists, this release is definitely a "must buy". if i had a top ten greatest dance albums of all time, "outline" would definitely make the list.

Quintessential Disco.......2001-08-05

Outline is one of the quintessential albums from the disco age. It coheres as a whole very well, providing both listening and dancing pleasure with its throbbing basslines, stabbing keyboards, and spare, sometimes chanted vocals. When it arrived on the scene in 1979 it created a sensation for its taut production and unique artistic point of view. "Dancer" is the standout track and one of the best of the many releases during the late 70's. "Dance to Dance" is also very good. Actually, all of the tracks are great. This disc contains several added features, remixes and radio edits of several songs. This is a mixed blessing, as it is for any remastered lp's. The bonus features are great for the interest they add, but they also interfere with the organic whole of these vinyl projects, especially in a case like this where the original tracks are out of order, interspersed with remixes from a later time. I suppose the added tracks are desirable, as I always burn a copy of the original album for nostalgia's sake. Great dance music! Along with C'est Chic, Sylvester's Stars, Ashford & Simpson's Stay Free, Inner Life's second album, First Choice's Hold Your Horses, Sister Sledge's We Are Family, Linda Clifford's I'm Yours, Don Ray's Graden of Love, Donna Summer's Four Seasons of Love and Bad Girls, Outline is a must-have lp from the disco years.

A CLASSIC!.......2000-12-27

What else can be said about this...*THE* album that introduced Gino Soccio to the world! If you're looking for classic and classy disco music (even the critics liked his stuff!), get this album. The songs DANCER and DANCE TO DANCE are worth the price alone. Excellent!

Gino Soccio's Legendary Disco Classic's.......2000-07-15

This is one of the artists that made those late 70's and early 80's such a rememberable time. I have all Gino Soccio albums on vinyl and it's great that they are now available on cd. Nearly every song on this cd is a dancefloor classic.
