The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Decent interpretation marred by terrible intonation.......2007-04-06
For a budget recording of this that's actually decent, I'd be much more inclined to buy Naxos' release of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine's version under Andrew Mogrelia.

The sophomore slump is tough for any artist, but it's got to be daunting when your worldwide smash debut four years ago (1998's Left of the Middle) dominated the charts based on someone else's song (Ednaswap's "Torn"). For her second album, pop singer Natalie Imbruglia allies herself with big-name producers/collaborators but takes a slower, moodier direction. While the singer/songwriter has maintained the key elements of her first album--a mixture of pop rock, acoustic and electronic embellishments, and gritty guitars--there's a greater sense of emotional turbulence here. The best moments on this effort are the edgier ones: the anxious opener, "That Day," with its nervous guitar and tumbling lyrics; the yearning space-pop of "Sunlight"; and the sparkling electro-acoustic rock of "Wrong Impression." Not all the tracks are keepers, but there is an appealing honesty and understated quality to White Lilies Island that makes it sound refreshing. After all, sadness can be catchy too. --Bryan ReesmanCustomer Reviews:
An Awesome Sophomore Release!!!!!.......2007-03-16
When I purchased this album, I took a big risk. I really liked her single "Torn" off of "Left of the Middle," but didn't care for the rest of the album - it had too much of the "Alanis Morrisette" sound for my tastes. Despite this, I really liked her voice, so I purchased her second release.
What makes this album so awesome? She has raised the bar ten-fold with diversity and quality. The melodies on most of the album are quite beautiful, rising and falling with each phrase. Add to that Natalie's beautiful tone quality and vocal control and you have the makings to a phenomenal album.
Then there's the arrangements, which are creatively superb. My favorite tracks are "Beauty on the Fire," "Do You Love," and "Goodbye." All of these tracks incorporate modern synth sounds that are not overdone, but utilized at the proper moment. These three tracks also display a pleasurable balance of distorted guitar against the keys. The latter, "Goodbye," with its long, flowing melody shows off the depth of Natalie's range. Perhaps it's her accent or good training, but her use of proper vocal diction is prevalent on all three of these tunes, particularly "Beauty on the Fire." This song is extremely interesting with all of the cool synth effects.
Of the other nine tracks, there is a great balance between ballads and pop, between keys and guitars. Tracks one and three are very acoustic-guitar based; track 12, "Come September," is a well written ballad with great dynamic and instrumental contrast; track nine incorporates the distorted guitar again with a heavy edge. It's an album that doesn't leave the listener bored, but enjoying it all the way. Yes, there are a few tracks that I don't care for, but that's easily forgotten because the majority of the material is so well written and arranged.
If you liked her first single "Torn," you must give this album a listen. It's in the same vein of quality - you will not be disappointed.
One Of The Most Meaningful CDs Ever.........2006-09-01
Standouts are "That Day" & "Come September", which are very powerful in their delivery & give you a feeling that everything will one day day be alright.. while other songs such as "Talk In Tongues" & "Goodbye" can really set you off into a melancholy mood for days. Then songs like "Wrong Impression", "Sunlight", & "Satellite" are perfect for the radio & everyday listening.
Every song is a gem and is one of my favorite albums of all time. People who can't appreciate it have obviously never been through a tough time in their life, thus not being able to relate to the songs' meanings.
GET IT!!!
It's supposed to be like this...absolutely perfect.......2006-07-27
so throw the beauty on the fire
don't push too much..."
If you are having "one of those days" and something happens that you can't control, the first song on this album is amusing and healing. "I'm right and I'm wrong and it's beautiful." There is such an acceptance of the natural flow of life and woven with angelic appeal all while living on the edge.
The entire has that listen to this on a lazy summer afternoon feel. Casual textures and dreamy vocals within a somewhat occasional chaotic (That Day/Sunlight) yet melodic (Do You Love?/Goodbye) musical landscape give this artistic appeal.

N. Imbruglia.......2006-06-12
Wrong Impression is a "should have been hit" song, and the reason I bought the cd; but all of the other songs are good too.
Don't get the wrong impression.......2006-02-25
The first song I heard from this album wasn't the first single 'That Day', but rather the second single 'Wrong Impression', which I heard in a soundtrack. I fell in love with 'Wrong Impression' immediately; the strings on the intro were dramatic, and when the guitars started playing seconds later (a wonderfully pleasant surprise) I couldn't stop listening to it.
That's not all that White Lilies Island is; there are other wonderful tracks which all are morose in the way they were produced but are meaningful nevertheless.
My favorites:
Wrong Impression
Talk In Tongues
Sunlight
Satellite
Everything Goes
'Talk in Tongues' showcases Natalie's vocals very well. I know some are going to disagree and say that the best vocal performance on this album was in 'Hurricane', but that song can get a little boring, really. 'Talk in Tongues' is a somewhat more somber as well as dramatic affair at the same time. It is talking about something more relatable, something more serious, but at the same time the musicality of the song is full of flavor. The flutes in this song are awesome too.
Should 'Sunlight' have been released? At first I thought that would've been a great idea, but I think it's not a feasible idea; I don't know how the radio audience would have taken that song. But I really like the chaotic mess of the song, how the lyrics seem like voices pounding inside your head as you seem to get entangled in a maelstrom, in a litany of questions.
Others say 'Satellite' should've been released. I think that would've been a better choice than 'Sunlight' if such a thing had happened, but I love the playfulness in this song; it's like filler and non-filler material at the same time - I just don't know how to categorize it.
'Everything Goes' stands out simply because the lyrics bear the closest resemblance to what the title says--"you live your live/you live like an island"--so there's some significance there. The stanzas are really nice, but the chorus is a little bit of a letdown. Lots of listeners call this one of the weaker tracks, but somehow that's just not how I feel.
Overall, this album isn't for everyone, because lots of music listeners like seeing the sunny side up of things, whereas this album focuses on the misery of relationships and life, and generally has a very dense, heavy sound, which will definitely at first seem to be a very viscous sort of sound coursing through, if you get what I mean.
To me, this is better than her debut ('Left of the Middle'), which I thought was a tad too ambitious and had her experimenting with too many genres than would have deemed sufficient to make the album. It also surpasses her third album, 'Counting Down the Days', which does sound a lot plainer than I would have expected.
But to each his own.

Composer, premiere player, soloist - Yin Cheng-zong's authentic Yellow River Concerto.......2007-07-03
Lang Lang recently made a new recording of this piece with DG.
I heard master Yin play this piece (in Lang Lang's stead) last evening in Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and he moved me to tears.
Yin Cheng-zong is over 60 years old now. He lived through the various turmoils of China. It requires life experience and patriotism to interpret this piece, so very sorry, I haven't heard any foreign pianist playing this piece yet, let alone on record.
HOWEVER, Yin Cheng-zong did made a recording of this piece with Claudio Abbado, but the recording has never been released by the PRC official broadcasting agency. Yin himself claims that this was one of the most memorable performances he had of this piece - Abbado understands the piece so well that Yin was highly amazed!
The foremost player and interpretor of this piece remains Yin Cheng-zong, but I must say that ALSO hearing Lang Lang playing this piece a couple of days ago (also in Hong Kong), Lang's playing of this piece is vastly improving.
something missing and deadly wrong here.......2006-11-07
but the composer of this 'yellow river' was educated in the chinese communist system, his composition was still dominated subjectively by the blind chinese revolutionary passion, the concerto from the very beginning sounds like listening to a cultural revolution marching song, banging and pounding so headstrong against almost all the foreign elements, condemning so viciously and so mercilessly with hatred, like revolutionary army at wars, like those stupid formula musicals, songs and plays created in the cultural revolution era to please the butcher chairman mao. there's almost no big difference here. when you listen to this concerto, only a small part and portion make you feel like something good and wonderful offered by the river, most part of it sounds too clueless military.
we all knew that the chinese civilization and it's culture was originated from the yellow river, it's like a mother of china. yes, yellow river is always unpreditable and changing, its inevitable floodings in the history caused a lot of deaths and tragedies, but a river could never be always so merciless and vicious. this concerto and this music is not an appropriate interpretation of the yellow river but a chinese communist revolutionary marching song by a die hard communist composer. it's a very bad concerto actually.

Philips' 100-volume Great Pianists of the 20th Century series is one of the most ambitious projects ever put together by a record company. For all the debate that will surely ensue over who was chosen and who was passed over, it's obvious that careful, loving attention has gone into the selection of content for the happy 72 to be admitted to this special pantheon (certain especially significant pianists are allotted two or even three volumes, such as Vladimir Horowitz). Each of the handsomely designed, sepia-tinted volumes--adorned with a black and white photo--contains two CDs and a thoughtful essay on the artist in question. Prospective buyers should be aware that this sampler volume offers only short vignettes (averaging between two and three minutes), along with a thumbnail sketch, for each pianist. Still, it's a smorgasbord of morsels that allow you to taste some of the major trends in philosophy and approach to the instrument throughout the century (and reaching well back into the 19th), and the overlap of repertory permits some fascinating quick comparisons as style and technique have evolved. Delve into some of the artists in the series--say Alfred Brendel or Martha Argerich--and trace in greater depth the piano's identity crisis. Is it, for example, a resonantly string-like instrument ideal for pastel shadings or a steely, percussive machine meant to express the hardness of the 20th century? There are countless discoveries to be made here, both for the connoisseur and for anyone taking the first step into getting acquainted with great keyboard artistry. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:
Tantalizing preview of good things to come.......2003-01-07
As a sampler, there are some incredible jewels here, for example Nikita Magaloff's sparkling Chopin Tarantelle and Paganini Etude No.3: 'La Campanella' played excitingly by John Ogdon. There is even an early recording of Paderewski playing (predictably) Paderewski.
This sampler seems a bit of a Euro-centric, but the editors wisely chose to include Earl Wild doing Gershwin and Roslyn Tureck doing Bach. I ended up purchasing the Andre Watts volume from this series, and wondered what it would be like to own the whole shootin' match. I saw the entire CD series on display in a top notch music store in Germany--it was overwhelming to see the line of brown covers stretching impressively across an entire wall. The sampler is a good way to have a taste of this ambitious series of the giants of piano in the 20th Century. I listen to it often with great enjoyment.

Alfred Newman's Final Epic Bow.......2004-10-12
Soundtrack, entire film score and composer ~ Alfred Newman.......2004-10-10
The music, yes the music is where this film shines...Alfred Newman, one of the most respected composers of his time was given the assignment ~ it was Newman who gave us the "20th Century Fox" fanfare theme...also a number of other film scores "Anastasia", "Diary of Anne Frank", "Captain from Castile", "Gunga Din", "How The West Was Won", "How to Marry A Millionaire", "The Keys of the Kingdom", "Man of Galilee", "Mark of Zorro", "Nevada Smith", "The Razor's Edge", "The Robe", "The Song of Bernadette" and "Wuthering Heights" ~ all of them were winners.
The Greatest Story Ever Told is here complete for the very first time and has everything from "Original Soundtrack Album" and then the "Entire Film Score" on the last two discs...making this a three disc "film-score-buffs" dream come true ~ completely remastered, with liner notes that will tell all the inside scoop from author, screenwriters, director and composer...just the way we like 'em!
