4 out of 5 stars CD vs lp.......2006-02-13

2 reviews ago, the person mentioned a difference between the cassette and CD at the beg of A Day at the Races. I'm not a cassette person anymore :-), but I tracked down an original lp to compare because I'm a stickler about these things too.

He's correct, but it's not as bad as you think. :-) When they "converted" the lp (at least) to CD, they changed the order such that A Day at the Races is now before Ode to Don Jose, not after as on the lp (and I'm presuming the cassette too). A lot of the ambient stuff he talks about is at the end of Ode to Don Jose. There is one little snippet that is actually gone, when they say, "And they're off" right before A Day at the Races begins. That part is gone.

In general, I wasn't a big fan of this recording when it came out, but a bunch of years later, I do really enjoy it. Maybe not quite as accessible as some of their other stuff, but I do think it's worth a listen for fans.

    3 out of 5 stars I might be a little picky but..........2005-06-29

I had this album (cassette) back in the late 80's and loved it! It was so different and so musical that I could listen to it for hours. Being a musical nut, I loved hearing all the noises, ambient sound, etc that the AON could put into a song. When I found this CD here a few weeks ago I jumped at the chance to own it because of one specific song that was on it. Well I had to give it 3 out of 5 stars only because the CD has been edited at one part...a part that really made that song work. My favorite track on this album is "Day at the Races". I loved the effect of the drums, ambient sounds from the horse track (announcer, horses, etc), and the overall tempo, but the intro to the song was edited (completely deleted) from the original version. So instead of hearing these sounds (horse trainers, horses, doors, sounds of the track as the horses were being loaded into the starting gate, etc) the song just "starts". There is no work-up to the song to allow you to greatly appreciate the effort that the AON put in to making this song, If you had have ever heard the original you would understand. The weird thing is that ALL other ambient noise between each song is still there (even after this specific song) but just not the intro.

Like I said, may be picky but I was really disappointed after hearing this cut.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it then and love it now... .......2005-01-22

Got this in *yikes* the 80's (on cassette!) when it was something I remember as strange, different and very very good. I remember stopping and being entranced by the way they used noise to make music... In recent review, it still strikes me as very very good and as this was my first introduction to the group then and I still feel its excellent I would say its a definite first to begin with if you are thinking of really sampling the Art of Noise...

4 out of 5 stars A Little Less Noise, A Little More Music.......2004-10-29

Once again noise is reshaped and molded into musical sounds. This album has more musical overtones than previous ones, but there is still enough noise to sustain the wierdness. Favorite tracks: Dragnet, Fin Du Temps, Opus For Four, Debut, E.F.L., Crusoe, One Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Weird, yes, but never BORING!.......2004-05-03

This is the third album in the Art Of Noise discography and it continues in their fine tradition of taking everyday sounds and setting them to music ("E.F.I." features airplane engine sounds). Also, there is the theme from "Dragnet". The version here is the T.V. theme, given a funkified work-up. They later did a more danceable version for the Tom Hanks/Dan Aykroyd movie.
Being a longtime fan of AON, I am surprised that they never caught on here in the states like some of their contemporaries (Yello, who did "Oh Yeah" and Enigma, known for "Sadeness, Pt.1")
So, if you are tired of the pop tunes as of late and you want something that will make you reach for the repeat button, then this is the "Nonsense" you're looking for!

      Album Description

This CD is destined to become a collector's item. One of only three recordings featuring both Saint-Saens String Qurtets on the same CD, it is delightfully and exquisitely performed by The Equinox String Quartet, which is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the finest ensembles in the musical world. Its members, world class performers Lun Jiang and Quan Jiang, violins; Ariel Rudiakov, viola; and Ann Kim; cello, have studied at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and Yale University; with some of the most prominent names in chamber music, including members of the Juilliard String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, and cellist Nathaniel Rosen. The Equinox String Quartet performs a wide range of repertoire from classical standards to contemporary pieces, specializing in the identification of new and unusual works by great composers. This is their debut CD, released by Eroica Classical Recordings.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Forgotten music..........2005-09-21

I don't understand why a lot of Saint-Saens music has been essentially swept under the rug. I get the feeling that there are two reasons; 1) Saint-Saens was a bit of an anachronism, writing these truly Romantic-era style quartets into the mid-1910's; and 2)while a full-blown Romantic, he did not necessarily adhere to the Sonata form, with the exception of his most famous works, i.e. Piano Concertos 2 and 4, Symphony No. 3, Violin Conerto No.3, and Cello Concerto No.1, along with a few others. Unfortunately, as a result of this, musical purists have essentially excluded almost all of his works from the standard repetoire, and therefore beautiful music like this goes unnoticed.
Don't get me wrong; I love the quartets of the masters, like Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Schubert and the like; but these quartets in my opinion stand with some of the formers' masterworks. Saint-Saens was a musical prodigy who could play all of Beethoven's piano sonatas by the age of 8; and while he often broke the rules musically speaking, he shouldn't be punished for it. (re: Wagner).
The performances couldn't be better. The musicians easily tackle his demanding scores and bring the music the breath of life it needs. The second quartet is wonderful - it is in e Minor - I think I prefer it to the first. The opening leads you into a lovely, melodic allegro which is full of polyphonics (he was obsessed with fugue, thus his nickname "the French Mendelssohn") and wonderful harmonies. The second movement contains a great string fugue - anyone who likes late Beethoven quartets will definitely want to hear this. the slow movement is beautiful, and the finale is amazing, with a bombastic ending. The G Major quartet more closely adheres to classical sonata sound, if not form ; in spite of this "shortcoming",it is also a lovely piece with a lot of memorable melodies. I don't really want to write a full review of every track, but suffice it to say that this album is worth picking up. Saint-Saens is mostly forgotten, but these pieces deserve their place.

      5 out of 5 stars Saint-saëns String Quartets.......2002-08-04

These are by far my favorite Saint-Saëns pieces, and my favorite string quartets by any composer. The more I listen to this cd, the more I love it.

            Album Description

This is the first time this classic album has been issued on CD anywhere in the world. Not only is this rare LP one of Herbie Mann's own favorites, it is one of the most moving classical/jazz fusions ever recorded. Originally released in 1968 on Atlantic. Features a symphony orchestra conducted by William Fischer. 2000 release. Standard jewel case.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars A welcome surprise.......2000-06-24

As the owner of a well-worn, at least 25 year old vinyl copy, I never thought I'd see this on CD. I'm sure there are some other Herbie Mann fans who would be just as pleased as I am to see this disc. The title song is an outstanding classical jazz piece. You can hear influences from New Orleans to Germany (where it was actually recorded) and everywhere in between. The orchestra and Herbie's late '60s quintet work together beautifully. The three shorter pieces take you on a relaxing tour through the Middle East. If all the people in that region sat down to listen to this music, there would be a lot less fighting! Now that this disc is out, I'll be waiting for some more surprises. Turtle Bay and Muscle Shoals Nitty Gritty would be nice. How about it, Atlantic?

4 out of 5 stars Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

            5 out of 5 stars A touch of history...........2002-01-28

An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****

              3. Sheng: Four Movements (1990)

              Album Description

Known for "wildly imaginative, emotionally charged virtuoso playing," Triple Helix was named "2002 Musicians of the Year" and for three consecutive years "Best Chamber Music in Boston" by The Boston Globe. The group's "splendid musical chemistry and virtually perfect dynamic balance" was heralded by The Los Angeles Times.

Each of the three pieces on this recording is written from the core of the composer's heritage or early experience, capturing the heartbeat and cadences of a people in a particular landscape at a particular point in time. The Ravel contains the haunting and lilting qualities of his native Basque music. Shostakovich captures some of the stark and grisly atmosphere of the Nazi death camps, along with other moments in his life during that period. And the Sheng evokes the harmonies and timbres of the Chinese folk instruments of his native land.

This exceptional ensemble was formed in 1995 by three internationally acclaimed chamber musicians: Bayla Keyes, founding violinist of the Muir String Quartet; Rhonda Rider, founding cellist of the Lydian String Quartet; and Lois Shapiro, NY Concert Artists Guild Award-winner. The players serve on the faculties of several Boston-area institutions: Boston University, Boston Conservatory, Wellesley College, and Longy School of Music. Together, the players are Ensemble-in-Residence at Wellesley College.
