5 out of 5 stars Magic paradox: innovative retro-electro..........2004-05-06

Amongst the utter bombardment of electronic music these days, especially from the "underground", spotting the gems remains the most fun pursuit about the whole thing, really.. With Ascii Disko, you need look no further.

Possibly one of the freshest and most innovative albums of 2003-2004, this LP is totally exciting from beginning to end: loads of great ideas, a ton of atmosphere (mostly dark and ominous) and grooves by the busload.

While it's undoubtdedly a retro album in that it will bring to mind some of the best alternative electro moments of the 80s, at the same time it's very progressive, reaching forward by using soundscapes of the past in a very creative manner.

More to its credits that it's sung in German giving us a break from all the english-speaking releases out there (especially from German bands for that matter). Its lyrics are again reminiscent of that 80s vibe, daily observations of a world spinning round without necessarily much sense to it, comments on trends and people waking by and fading away.

It has also this well felt vibe of romanticism to it, which, due to the analog sounding synth beats (metallic claps included) will easily remind of that "new-romantic" scene of the 80s with the only difference being the great production and the even greater execution of the whole concept..

If you're into electronic music and its 1000 faces you absolutely need to hear this! Shame i couldn't spot it on vinyl (only 3 maxis of it exist on record) but even so, Ascii Disko is totally addictive and will occupy your CD player for quite some time...

This is not EBM, synth pop, or goth like most of the stuff on Metropolis. It is mostly sung in German with some French, which I like better than hearing some European speak English rather than his own language. There are no noise or distorted vocals. It does have a retro feel but still seems modern. It has great production and a sound that fills the room. It is the best electronic album from Metropolis in a while.

5 out of 5 stars crazy disco meets ebm meets goth.......2003-10-24

This CD fell into my lap (ok, I get promos from time to time) and I honestly did not expect much. The cover made it look like a Wampscut record, and as hard as I try I just can't get into the German neo-goth/EBM/industrial stuff.

ascII Disco is all together different (first of all I think he is French, language wise anyway). It is a cross between Daft Punk, Scanner, Les Rythmes Digitales and even a little of the Beloved thrown in there, with the vocal attitude of Apop B.

My fave track is Strassen, which starts off as some sort of lazy club remix but builds into a powerful and affecting song. In fact most of the sounds that asscii Discko uses are the standard club and or EBM sounds that you hear on a hundred other records, but he combines them in such a way that they sound fresh. He has a knack for how to build a song to maximum effect, both for the dance floor and say, god willing, the car radio.

This record does NOT fall into the Electroclash trap of mistaking boring music for sublime and cool music. To my mind it recalls the demented disco records from the French disco/new wave bands of the early 80s as much as the current electro scene.
Asscii Disko is never boring and is as fresh a record as I have heard in 2003.
