The Human Condition

Editorial Reviews

From URB Magazine
Two years ago, Ming and FS' debut full-length, Hell's Kitchen, scored massive props from the throngs who'd been waiting for a credible drum & bass/hip-hop fusion. Said record was the product of the Manhattan/Hell's Kitchen duo's longstanding hip-hop roots, jazz training and production skills that had been employed by artists ranging from Coolio to Brandy. The boys were bad-asses and knew it - they dubbed their music "junkyard" and chided self-described turntablists for piss-poor songs and bloated battle-honed egos.

It's hard to live up to hype, and Ming and FS' sophomore long-player, The Human Condition, doesn't. It's an inconsistent melange of hip-hop, drum & bass, jazz fusion and electronics that fails to attain aesthetic coherence. Genre-blending can be the province of artists possessed of transcendent musical visions, but when done poorly it recalls those naÔve '90s collegiate indie bands whose sets wandered between cliche funk, punk, folk and psychedelic originals. While the prognosis isn't as grim as that comparison, The Human Condition is mired in the quality-control problems that come with music that takes the buffet as its model. Half the disc is highly recommended West London-inspired jazz fusion that stokes the senses with poly-rhythms and bright hooks, but the remainder consists of confused forays into industrial-inspired electronics and surprisingly inauthentic jungle. Left alone, the fusion material would make for a stellar record, but it can't carry the dead weight of hackneyed vocal samples ("You're a bad girl - such a pretty little girl") repeated ad nauseam over market-friendly funk. Sad to say it, but somebody's out to lunch in Hell's Kitchen.

Scotland's MAN MUST DIE unleash a blistering assault on their Relapse debut The Human Condition. MAN MUST DIE is a vicious Slayer-meets-modern extreme metal hybrid who deftly balances brutality, technicality, and song writing that belies their young age. The quartet's crisp, powerful guitar-work, vocal savagery, and pummeling percussion establish them as a band on the rise. MAN MUST DIE have arrived, and The Human Condition is a soon-to-be classic of contemporary metal!

      Album Description

Human Condition, originally released in 1978, is significant for being the last complete studio album featuring Bob "The Bear" Hite, who died at 36 of a heart attack on April 6, 1981 following a gig at the Palamino in North Hollywood. At that point the band was midway through recording the Kings of The Boogie album for the Destiny label. Human Condition was recorded during 1977 and is complex in form with frequent gear changes, from blues to jazz-blues and back, all the while based in that updated John Lee Hooker Boogie Chillen' riff that was Canned Heat's trademark from the early days onwards. Human Condition features guest appearances by blues-rock guitarist Harvey Mandel and backing vocals by the Chambers Brothers on selected tracks.

I Used To Be Mad... began to take shape towards the end of the 1981 tour when on again-off again Canned Heat guitarist Henry Vestine asked the tour promoter (a hippie who bikers nicknamed "the Hebro") if he'd be interested in recording an album. He honed a deal with Vestine and the album was recorded at the Mascot Recording Studios in Auckland, New Zealand. The wide choice of material, rock'n'roll and soul covers, blues originals and new approaches to Heat's hits, dignify Henry Vestine as a musician who was never content to mark time or rest on any laurels.

      Album Description

Gary Bennett co-fronted and was a co-founding member of the critically acclaimed country music band BR549, which recorded five albums (four with Arista and one with Sony), received three Grammy nominations, and was hailed by music industry trade magazine Billboard as having single-handedly revived the soul of country music in Nashville. During Gary's tenure, the band sold over 500,000 albums and toured the world, headlining shows as well as opening for such artists as Bob Dylan, George Jones, Merle Haggard, the Black Crowes and Brian Setzer. BR549 was also voted "Best Country Group" in 1996 by Rolling Stone magazine.

Gary Bennett left BR549 in 2002 and retreated from music for a short while, only to return to writing and performing. The result is his debut solo CD, Human Condition, produced by R.S. Field (Sonny Landreth, Allison Moorer, Webb Wilder).

Human Condition highlights 12 new songs, most of which were written by Bennett, including one co-written with Todd Snider ("Better Than This"). Gary's studio band features some of Nashville's finest musicians, including Kenny Vaughan (Marty Stuart) on guitar, Jimmy Lester (Webb Wilder, Los Straitjackets) on drums and Mark Winchester (Emmylou Harris) on bass. Special guests include Marty Stuart, who plays mandolin on several tracks as well as rhythm guitar on the song "Just Wanna Be With You," legendary pedal steel guitar player Lloyd Green and producer R.S. Field on several instruments.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Bennett delivers a helluva collection of songs.......2006-08-17

I saw Gary perform in a small bar two days prior to getting my cd in the mail. I knew from the performance he put on that the album would be equally as amazing. He played songs off of the human condition album and made me very eager to have it and hear the other songs that he didn't play. Gary's voice on the album lets you hear the emotion that he puts into his songwriting. Every song on the album is true and tells the stories of life the way they were meant to be told. If you are wanting an album from an artist that pours his heart into his product than Gary Bennett's Human Condition album is the one you need to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars BEST RECORD OF THE YEAR.......2006-05-15

      THESE ARE SONGS.
YES INDIE ROCK RECORDS ARE GOOD AND YOU CAN GROOVE TO THEM BUT WITH A LOT OF INDIE ROCK AND A LOT OF MUSIC IN GENERAL THAT IS RELEASED THESE DAYS, THE SONGS ARE LACKING.

THIS IS THE FINEST COLLECTION OF SONGS RELEASED IN QUITE SOME PERIOD. THIS IS BENNETT SINGING AT HIS FINEST AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WRITING AT HIS FINEST. I PICKED THIS UP AFTER HEARING IT ON XM. I KNEW THE BR549 RECORDS BUT WASN'T EVER THAT IMPRESSED WITH THEM. I LIKED THEM, BUT THAT WAS ABOUT IT. AFTER HEARING CROSS COUNTRY SPIN THIS CD A BUNCH AND THE CD CLIMBING TO THE TOP OF THEIR CHART, I BOUGHT THIS IMMEDIATELY.

I HIGHLY SUGGEST IT. AND AMAZON SHOULD PUT UP AN EDITORIAL REVIEW OF THIS CD BECAUSE THEY REVIEW A BUNCH OF HORRIBLE STUFF THAT SHOULDN'T BE REVIEWED, LIKE THE NEW VAN MORRISON RECORD WHICH IS GOD AWFUL. VAN MORRISON DOESN'T NEED AMAZON TO HELP SELL HIM RECORDS, ESPECIALLY SINCE HIS NEW RECORD IS A LOAD OF TRASH. THIS IS THE KIND OF RECORD THAT AMAZON SHOULD BE SUPPORTING AND TRYING TO PROMOTE THROUGH PUTTING UP EXCELLENT EDITORIAL REVIEWS.

SO, HOP TO IT AMAZON. THIS RECORD NEEDS TO BE PROMOTED CAUSE IT'S WAY TOO F'N GOOD TO GO IGNORED!!

PICK IT UP IF YOU LIKE SONGS AND GOOD MUSIC IN GENERAL. IF YOU DON'T LIKE GOOD MUSIC GO LISTEN TO JOHN TESH

5 out of 5 stars excellent debut from gary bennett.......2006-05-15

Gary Bennett was the heart and soul of the most successful alt. country band of all time, Br5-49. They graced the cover of the legendary Billboard magazine before they even had a record deal. Allegedly, Timothy White saw the boys down their on Broadway playing for tips at Roberts. That night he told them as well as his co-editor that he was putting them on the cover of Billboard. The next morning.. after the alcohol wore off the co-editor asked Timothy if he was still puttin' them country boys on the cover of Billboard to which Timothy replied.. "yes".

So.. many tours with the likes of Bob Dylan, the Black Crowes, Brian Setzer, Merle Haggard, etc., and after four records with famed label Arista and one record in 2001 on Sony.. Gary Bennett left the band along with their bass player, "Smilin'" Jay McDowell. When Gary left he completely walked away from music and none of us in the Br5-49 community really knew what happened. The guy who wrote the best songs as well as half the songs and sang on half the songs, left the group. It completely destroyed the community and really broke it up. Apparently Gary took a job at Home Depot from what the latest article in No Depression stated. Then he went to managing the legendary Ernest Tubb Record Store in Nashville Tennessee. After a short period he was convinced to do a solo record by some excellent guys like Kenny Vaughan, Jimmy Lester, Mark Winchester, and R.S. Field . The result is an amazing collection of original songs and some of the best cover versions of other songs that I've ever heard. Gary's version of Bill Ray Reynolds' "Steel Ball" is out of this world! The music is something Merle Haggard would've done back in the 80's.. similar to the music on his best work "What Am I Gonna Do (with the rest of my life)", "Going Where the Lonely Go", and "Are the Good Times Really Over For Good".. the vocals Gary puts forth are similar to the Hag except done in Bennett's own style.

The rest of the record is just absolutely classic. It's one of those cds that you put in an instantly know it's special, magical, and classic. I haven't felt this way about an album since Ryan Adams' "Heartbreaker" and the first Br5-49 "phone" record. This is a true masterpiece and I'm highly enjoying it. While the current lineup of Br5-49 is consistently trying to find themselves musically and lyrically, Gary Bennett has proven that he knows who he is and thank God for that. From start to finish this is a journey, I encourage you to buy the cd and go on it yourself. It's an amazing collection of songs, folks.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Ever.......2006-02-21

Gary Bennett sounds better than ever on the new cd human condition. As a songwriter he is at the top of his game with songs like Human Condition,Heading Home,Aint Getting No younger, and My Illussion.

The musicians on the cd are some of my favourites. Kenny Vaughn is always amazing with Marty Stuart and shines just as bright here. Jimmy Lester is from Los Straightjackets and I wondered what he was up to now.

I have a feeling that this cd is going to take off. This is good music for people who like old rock, old country, rockabilly, and even new country.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2007-02-18

There's not much to say here. It's a foot stomping head thrashing cd with amazing breakdowns heavy guitar riffing throughout and all of that. I love the guy's voice. I like the other singer too. But this one brings somethin different to the table. BUT I just would like to say this...this band is NOT death metal or black metal, so those of you who think it is, or label it as such - are wrong. Including the one's below. They are metalcore/hardcore what have you...so if you're looking for one of the best bands out there in the metalcore/hardcore scene, this one is it. All worth it just for the brutality of it.

5 out of 5 stars just good metal.......2006-05-02

i guess i'm in the minority when i say that i like the singer. he doesn't sing, that's something i can get behind. the music is fairly brutal, with lots of breakdowns and some pretty outrageous sounds(broken mouth). I guess if i had to say something about this cd that i didn't like it'd be that i would like more drums, but, i say that about every band. if i had to say what it sounds like, his singing reminds me of catharsis' lead's yell, breakdowns like deadwater drowning and drums like most metal bands. very good, pick it up. my english is poor.

5 out of 5 stars really, really awesome cd.......2001-11-17

this is the heaviest cd in the world .
      brutally brutal .
all the lyrics are extremly bleak, and really moshalicious breakdowns, vocals are growls with occasional earsplitting shrieks, if u like bands like sepultura, old fear factory, buried alive, hatebreed, overcast, deicide, 6ft under etc.. extremly heavy deathish metal/hardcore mixture, very very awesome, buy it NOW!!!!!!

      4 out of 5 stars martyr.......2001-07-04

martyr is awesopme they have very fast guitar riffs. the vocals are lacking at some points but overall I like the lyrical content and the voccals. I ahve seen them live a number of times and that is why I bought this album. They sound a lot like mesguggah at times and at other times the guitars break into great metalcore harmonies. the overall feel of the album is great and I can't stop listening to it I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes hardcore or bands like meshuggah. martyr rules..

      5 out of 5 stars martyr a.d-the human condition in12 fractions.......2001-03-02

this cd rocks out.the band is made of former members of disembodied.they keep with there upfront in your face attitude proving to be one of the heaviest bands in hardcore today.

This is the much anticipated follow-up to Fr. Stan's highly successful Catholic Rap CD from 1998 called Sacro Song. In Sacro Song II, Fr. Stan continues to explore the human condition in its many facets. The music is fresh and original, the messages are moral and true. Although the CD is primarily rap, Fr. Stan is able to blend in touches of jazz and world beat percussion. This makes for an interesting marriage of musical genres. Fr. Stan dedicates the CD to His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brought tears to my eyes.......2007-01-13

I am a newcomer to Fr. Stan's music and was looking for a stocking stuffer Christmas gift for my teenager and decided to order this for him. When I played it, I couldn't believe the magnitude of his words; and even though I am not a fan of rap or hip-hop music, I found his words cutting through me like a knife and bringing tears to my eyes. I can't stop listening to it. I am placing an order for the rest of his music.

4 out of 5 stars Oh, My beloved world you have given me so much and yet..........2004-05-16

The opening lyrics of Libre are a truth that can free any one of their consumerism or other plight.
Fr. Stan has a wonderful skill to make his music transcend the usual contraints. I am a middle-aged housewife from the 'burbs -- not the average rap fan. I love Cell 91, Unborn Victims of Violence, Everybdy Got to Suffer,Theology of the Body, the Magnificat and Libre.
I love Father Stan and the Heavenly Father, too.

5 out of 5 stars A World Youth Day gift.......2004-05-06

When I meet Fr. Stan during World Youth Day 2002, I asked if I could possibly buy one of his CD's if he had a spare copy. He ended up just giving it to me for free (what a franciscan thing to do!)

Anyway, I would definitely recomend this CD to anyone, Catholic or not. It's well written, well recorded, and the music is a blast!

5 out of 5 stars The Truth in language for our culture.......2002-06-22

I didn't know whether Fr Stan could do it yet again but he has... he has produced an album filled with songs which communicate Christian truth in the language and style of modern youth culture.

The highlights are "Everybody Got to Suffer" where he raps about how we all experience suffering while attacking the sinful preoccupation with violence associated with so much rap music; "Unborn Victims of Violence" which is an awesome pro-life rap which MUST be heard; and "Libre" - a piece of rhythmic poetry on the power of Christ, written and performed by Bro. Augustino.

The other tracks are fantastic too. This is an excellent follow up to Sacro Song (if you liked that album, you'll definitely enjoy this) and all his previous work. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars What a followup!!!!!.......2002-06-17

Fr. Stan did it again, with this excellent followup to Sacro Song. Whether you love rap or hate it, I can guarantee that you'll love this CD. Some of the songs are more like recited poetry put to music than hard-core rap. But that is the strength of Fr. Stan's style. He is musically very solid and innovative. And once again, it shows on this CD. There's a latin rap with a great beat. There's a slow blues/jazz rap that is emotionally charged. There's lots of African percussion. And it opens and closes with a beautiful rendition of the Magnificat with original music composed by Fr. Stan. Something for everyone.....and last, but not least, the messages and teachings in the songs NEED to be heard. I especially liked the politically motivated "Unborn Victims of Violence". When you read the words and understand the message, it makes perfect sense. Fr. Stan does not pull any punches with his lyrics. He'll make you think and make you feel - while putting it to great music. Thanks, Fr. Stan!

3 out of 5 stars Death and pestilence never sounded so good!.......2003-06-18

I couldn't give it 5 stars because the quality of the performances is patchy, and because I was spoiled by listening first to a whole CD of Growling Tiger. Still, the spark is there. The recordings are a bit tinny but considering they were made in the 1930s they're pretty good. They are full of wit, wisdom, and women who spend all your money and cheat on you.

One of the highlights of the CD are the Lion's *Fall of Man* You may read its chorus "Through the abuse of the Divine providence, Mankind was doomed to suffer death and pestilence," and scratch your head, but it's hilarious when the Lion sings it, honest. The other song not to miss is the Caresser's *Exploiting* (i.e. "Buy me a Zeppelin").

This is your basic 30s calypso, with the trumpet section playing backup, not the super-traditional bamboo band sound that Alan Lomax recorded later with Growling Tiger (in case that's what you're looking for). Buy it. Love it. They don't make calypso like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Golden Age Calypso.......2001-02-25

Calypso from the 20s, 30s and 40s is my thing. And this is the first Calypso CD of that Golden Age in Trinidad music that I have given a perfect score of 5 stars! This is the definitive collection of calypsos about all the essential topics of that clever, elated medium. As suggested by the title, these masters of calypso largely focus on the battle of the sexes but take the battlefield from a hilarious angle. The infamous Atilla admonishes men to "assert control, or women will rule the world." If he didn't go out of his way to crack you up, you might think he actually feared for his safety in the face of 1930s feminism. He warns that "If women gain their ascendency, They would show us no sympathy, They'd make us do strange things, Goodness knows, Scrub floors or even wash clothes!" Well it seems the apocalypse ole Atilla was dreading has already come and gone, at least at my house. Many of these songs also challenge the hypocricy of the wealthy, take a cynical look at romance, turn a suspicious eye on fair weather friendships. The Gerald Clark Orchestra accompanies many of the tunes recorded at different times with different prominent calypsonians. But the great John Buddy Williams orchestra is here too. These songs are dark gems, heartbreaking and tragicomic. From Tiger's Sadu Man about a man who resorts to the life of a wandering Hindu ascetic after being scorched by romantic betrayal to the haunting but bouncy chorus of Death by the Roaring Lion, there is no escaping the piercing wit of the Fall of Man calypsos.

          Product Description

Folk records that aren't super traditional usually lean toward one or more other styles, and this artist leans toward rock and blues, but in an acoustic way. In fact, it begins with a very credible cover of the Traffic classic "40,000 Headmen."

            Album Description

This album is original folk-rock at its best. Bo Lozoff's music ranges from rock to folk to country, and his lyrics always hit home. He sings of life, of death, of triumph and struggle and humor and wonder. Because of his lifelong work with Human Kindness Foundation, dozens of talented musicians and singers line up to perform on Bo's albums. Listen to the sizzling guitar lead in "When It Rains," or the soul-stirring gospel backup in "Holding On," or the brilliant bluegrass players on "The Ballad of Walter the Pigeon," and you'll understand why Bo insists on "Bo Lozoff & Friends" instead of using his name alone as the artist. These are songs you will wake up humming.
