Scope

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Nobukazu Takemura's dizzying Scope uses influences from minimalist composer Steve Reich and fellow cyberfringe artists like Oval and Aphex Twin to create his own random worlds of wired bliss. Dizzying blips and whirs combine with off-kilter rhythms and spare, electronic aesthetics to produce an album of anarchic, computer-age psychedelia. --Matthew Cooke

Amazon.com essential recording
Nobukazu Takemura's impressive contribution to the otherwise unimpressive Reich Remixed marked him as a talent to watch. But on Scope, his U.S. debut under his own name (he released a record under the Child's View moniker in May 1999), Takemura is revealed as an artist with a singular rhythmic and textural imagination whose music recognizes no boundaries. The opening track, "On a Balloon," is rhythmic in the cinematic sense; a flickering pattern of digital blips strategically reappears throughout its 22-minute duration to link disparate sections of manipulated vinyl surface noise, throbbing keyboard tones, and the sounds of skipping CDs. On the next track, "Kepler," Takemura revisits Reich country by stringing sampled metalophones, harps, and female voices in dense, hypnotic repeated patterns around sustained synthetic hums. On "Taw" he swings doppler-shifting sequences of clicks and carousel organ tones in a vertiginous, elliptical orbit. He even tips his hat to old-old-school electronics on "Tiddler," a closing prayer that would have fit in fine on Cluster's Sowiesoso. --Bill Meyer

Despite her roles in mainstream musicals such as Cats and Chicago, Ute Lemper has never been a typical Broadway baby. Her long association with the works of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, as well as her one-woman shows based on the repertoires of Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich, has always marked her as a maverick in a world overpopulated by bland belters and cute ingénues. Lemper's distinctive voice isn't an instrument for easy listening. At full tilt, it's dangerous and edgy. In subdued mode, it's dark, ironic, and despairing. The cruelty that runs through many of her interpretations is taken on the chin. Lemper deals in defiance rather than submission. With just one, edgily updated Weill song ("Tango Ballad") and a host of contributions from Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Philip Glass, and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon, Punishing Kiss is a modern, bleak look at love in the 21st century. At times the tone is murderous, even apocalyptic ("The Case Continues"). The duet "Split," sung with Hannon, is a grimly humorous riot of punches and counterpunches in a disintegrating relationship. There's fleeting, poignant beauty too, in tracks like Waits's "Purple Avenue." Essential listening for anyone who likes their torch songs blood-stained, not just dampened by a few tears. --Piers Ford

5 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure..........2006-09-30

Is this woman awesome, or what?
I have to say, this is probably one of my fav's. A very deeply moving, emotionally intense project. I keep coming back to it. It's just absolutely awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Oh so very good.......2003-03-06

I fell in love with Ute Lemper when I heard a recording of her singing Kurt Weill's "Bilbao Song." I know she has her detractors, all of whom argue that other people are better at performing Kurt Weill. These people are idiots.

This album came as a shock for me, as she truly stretches out farther than I had expected. Yes, there is a Kurt Weill song here, taken from the Threepenny Opera, but it's rearranged like you've never heard before - with a drum and bass loop churning underneath lush strings and keyboards (but not cheesy keyboards, mind you).

The rest of the album follows in a similar style, though the instrumentation does subtly change for different composers' songs - most notably the addition of a bandoneon for the two Tom Waits songs.

What is amazing about the album is the sense of continuity running through it, in spite its being a collection of songs of different people. The gem of the album, however, is Nick Cave's "Little Water Song," in which, over a beautiful string section, Ute Lemper lets her theatre training and singing mix freely - producing a performance that simply floors me.

What else is there to say? She's simply amazing

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD of All.......2001-07-11

Simply stunning performance of unusual new songs written expressly for her, entirely captivating, imaginatively written and performed. May not appear to be a 'hit' first time round but you will play it again and again, hear more, find new meanings and so much depth.

It is performed dramatically (not as a routine studio tune and lyric) a most stimulating performance. In many ways it is a 'dark' album, not something you will be able to whistle in the bathroom, and all the better for that. If you are looking for real entertainment, look no further.

Ute has to be the most under-rated artist of the current era, wildly flexible in how she performs, in many ways outrageously kitsch. She has performed this album in a tour, which I was privileged to attend and this underlined just how good she - and the album - is. A 'must buy'. Just wish she had a video/DVD as well!

4 out of 5 stars SWEET TORCH SONG TORTURE.......2001-06-03

The statuesque Ute is a beauty so monumental, she's almost architectural. And she's got a voice and delivery to match, plus on this album, a taste for superb material.

My favourites are the Nick Cave, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits songs, but what is really impressive is how her voice holds together the Scott Walker song Scope J (If one can call it a song).

Anyone who can sing along to, let alone intelligently interpret, such a bizarre and dark little symphony, deserves 5 stars just for the effort. I like my divas dark and brooding, like Nico of Velvet Underground, so Ute fits the bill. Investigate and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars She Is Never What You Expect.......2001-02-01

We all know Ute Lemper as the foremost interpreter of Weill and art songs, but who would have guessed that she is adept at popular tunes too? Well, let me re-phrase, these songs are not "standards", however, they are written by contemporaries that more people would have heard of than Weill. Nick Cave and tom Waits, for example, are two the lyricists whose music is given life on this album. Let's start with the voice: it has a timbre totally unlike any other that you would have come across in pedestrian music circles. It can be warm, it can be cool (with ice-cold precision), it can be smooth or rough. She does whatever she wants to with her voice and the listener sits there with open mouth, awed by the sheer sound of this woman. She doesn't treat her voice as if it is some precious antique, she slams it around and all for the sake of song. Which brings us to her interpretive gifts: they are ample. When I read some of the lyrics in the booklet, I asked myself how she was going to pull it off but she always did and in an approach at odds with whatever you were expecting. Her song selection is most interesting, the only one I was familiar with prior to my purchase was "Streets of Berlin" which I had heard in the movie BENT. In her version, she is very intimate and quiet at first in a way that out-shimmies Mick Jagger (who sang the song in the movie) but then she gets loud and audacious in a way that is totally in keeping with the song's intent and works with instead of against the melody. My only complaint is that occasionally Ms. Lemper lets her voice get the better of her and crosses *that* line into melodrama. Other than this one small quibble, I recommend this disc for listeners who want to be throttled rather than soothed, to think rather than be spoon-fed. Enjoy... I know I did!

This is effectively a solo effort (with lots of help from 801 and King Crimson and Roxy alums) from Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera. Is it his best? No-- that's "801 Live." But this album (along with "Listen Now") is close behind, and the two stand-out tracks (Walking Through Heaven's Door & Gone Flying) are among the best stuff ever out of the whole Roxy/Ferry/Eno/Manzanera 70s club. Well worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Aggression........2004-04-15

Narrow Scope of Things is extremely unique in that it is extremely dynamic, yet at the peak of it's agression, it does not lose it's beauty. So many metal acts try to become tough and heavy, but lose their sense of melody and beauty in the process. The Narrow Scope of Things, on the other hand, pulls it off wonderfully.

There are so many great tracks, many are likely to be lost in the mix amongst melodic giants like "One Less Addiction." The album is a perfect blend of extremely catchy but heavy tracks, and less user friendly, yet more definitive tracks. Which blend together perfectly to create an album with unlimited replayability.

A rock/metal album full of aggression, yet countered with extreme beauty, which soars to heights which only a select few outfits have ever reached.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best Christian CD's I own.......2004-03-16

This CD took me a very long time to get used to. I bought it when i was probably about 14 or 15. Then, I threw it aside for years, disappointed that it wasn't loaded with intro-Korn riffs that was the signifier to me that music was heavy. But upon listening to this album more times recently, i've come to love it. It seems like a lot of hard hitting christian bands merely mimick another secular group in the mainstream as a christian alternative. I have much respect for Embodyment for not doing that with this disk.
With this album, they really have established themselves as their own band, and instead of trying to appeal to the masses, they really to a great job at appealing to those of us who like to experience our music and think about what they're saying.
The lyrics are some of the most poetic and thought provoking I have ever heard in christian rock. They deal less with the battle of demons and the flesh (like so many hardcore christian bands have done) and deal with idea's of relationships as they pertain to spirituality. Critical Error's lyrics sound like it's speaking of fake televangalists.
The vocal's are some of the most amazing i have ever heard in a christian band this hard. I would compare them to Max Illidge of 40 below summer, only better and less over-the-top.
As far as their actual sound, They sound like they draw insipiration from Korn and the Deftones without echoing them. The CD itself reminds me of the Deftones groundbreaking "White Pony". Not so much as sound, but more in the way the CD flows and the mood of it. I Would say that this CD is much more uplifting and less depressing, though.
A few of the songs have no real chorus and go into time changes that would satisfy any fan of Tool or Mudvayne. The song Assembly Line Humans is a heavy/punk/hardcore assault with screaming the whole way through. The chorus where he shouts SWALLOW-YOUR-PRIDE! with each word overlapping the last in a different pitch, reminds me of the Deftones off Around The Fur.
The Melodic parts are very melodic, and the heavy parts are very out of control and obnoxiously gut-wrenching.
The only reason i gave this CD four stars is because the screaming can sound a little forced at times, like the lead singer has never really done it before. Not only that, but I still just can't get into the song "One less addiction" and it's acoustic version is just plain overkill.
The parts where he sings with melody are much better, and i personally enjoy most of the soft songs over the heavy ones. BUt overall, this is a band that secular as well as Christian bands could learn from.

Best songs: Greedy hands--one of my favorite songs ever, christian or not. It's soft and emotional with an intense climax.
Confessions--I just can't decide if i like this or Greedy Hands better. It's soft and sort of sad.
Killing The Me in Me--This song has no chorus. Once it picks up and takes off, you can't stop it until it's done.
Assembly line Humans--THis song reminds me of the Deftones. It's fast and punkish with screaming the whole way through. I love the chorus.

I would recommend this to anyone who'se a fan of Korn, Sevendust, Deftones, Tool, or a perfect circle.

5 out of 5 stars Very Uplifting.......2002-06-05

This CD was one of the best investments ive made in my life. That sounds corny but whenever i get down or whenever I think about how i wish things were different, i always listen to this band. Embodyment is still underground so they dont sound like your common pop group. This cd is one of the best CD's ive ever heard. Highly recommended to anyone who likes Linkin Park ... Get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars It's a shame that this album doesn't get it's due.......2001-12-08

Embodyment went from a hardcore, hard edged band with an undefined and underproduced sound to a very well defined nu-metal/hardcore/punk/alternative cross. Much more singing, more defined and catchier beats, mixed with amazing lyrics and a great singer, really showcases Embodyment at its best. I think their first CD is a little too soft for my tastes, this is the perfect balance for people who like melody and madness on one album. Standout songs include "Critical Error", "Assembly Line Humans" and "Prelude", although if you buy this album you won't be skipping any tracks. This is a great album for headbanging AND singing along.

4 out of 5 stars Rock for the new millenium.......2001-09-03

What a great album. The sound basically can be compared to Far or the Deftones. There's lots of variety here, with songs such as "Winter Kiss" and "Killing the Me In Me" sounding like they'd fit right in on rock radio, while ballads like "One Less Addiction" and the more metallic songs ("Assembly Line Humans") offer something different from the mainstream. Because of this variety, the album sounds a bit uneven, and the heavier tracks sound somewhat forced. What you'll find in most of these songs are beautiful lyrics, melody, infectious guitar riffs, and hooks galore.

5 out of 5 stars Dancing In Darkness.......2003-12-25

I've only just begun to watch vol. 1: Arrival of the Witch Hunter Robin series and am so glad I went ahead and bought the limited edition collector's box set or else I would have had to spend nearly the same price for the original soundtrack (composed and conducted by Taku Iwasaki) by itself, which was fortunately included. Even if the show does nothing for you, the music that accompanies it is absolutely stunning and definitely worth having! The melodies compliment and capture the ambiance and the intriguing mystique of this action-filled anime cloaked with supernatural forces rather nicely, but it's also something you can sit back and enjoy on its own. Most of the songs are dark and moody with a great blend of light electronic beats, Gregorian chants, string orchestrations and rockin' guitar/drum parts that oftentimes interweave each other, keeping the flow at an even pace, but there's also some soothing piano and chime atmospherics as well as a couple smooth jazz numbers that set a more romantic tone. I just wish the opening and closing tracks, "Shell" and "Half Pain", which are the only tunes that feature Japanese singing (both with female vocals), weren't the TV edit versions. But aside from that flaw, I personally feel that this soundtrack is divinely fiendish!

3 out of 5 stars Quaint.......2001-06-21

Phil Manzanera defined British rock in the 70s, releasing several albums--most of them very good--while maintaining his status as Roxy Music guitarist. 801 Live and Diamond Head are his high water marks. On K-Scope, the slide that ended with the thankfully short-lived Explorers begins. All the pieces are there (although I was never fond of Tim Finn's voice). There is just no soul. Polite guitar rock by top flight musicians. Perhaps it is the Creme and Godley influence. That said, K Scope isn't all bad. The instrumentals soar, and the songs without Finn as the vocalist are fine...especially Walkin' Through Heaven's Door. Even John Wetton sounds good. That is no small accomplishment.

4 out of 5 stars Nor bad for 1978..........2000-11-17

Amidst the disco fad and hype it was refreshing to know that some artists were not afraid to try other venues of style or experiment outside of the norm. Case in point is Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music fame. This solo-side project reflects some interesting styles from pop-rock,pre-new wave to one particular track having an almost ska-like life of it's own (pre-dating the sound of the group Sublime). While Remote Control may have less than well thought out lyrics or music,K-Scope, Cuban Crisis, Hot Spot, and others more than make up for it.Do not expect any Love Is The Drug or Avalon musings;this is strictly Phil's turf and time. There is an almost subliminal early Police (Sting) nuance to this project but not enough to garner the award for rip-off.While not a blockbuster it is a more subtle approach and acquired taste that may take a few plays to get used to. Once you like it you will appreciate it more. It's like an intermediate wine;it may take a few sips before it hits (in a good 'ol fashion partying way).

4 out of 5 stars A Kaleidoscope Of Sound.......2000-05-16

Sadly for Roxy Music fans, Manzanera was pretty much relegated to the role of second banana by the time Avalon hit shelves in the early eighties. Gone were the looping, edgy guitar runs that marked key Roxy tracks like "Both Ends Burning" or "Editions Of You". On this, his third solo disc (fourth if you count 801 LIVE), Manzanera took all sorts of chances and came up with an inventive prog-rock album that sounded fun and varied. From "Walking Through Heaven's Door" (with its "Kashmir"-like construction) to the cheesy Farfisa organ runs on the instrumental title track, the album has a little bit of everything for fans who've come to love the man's guitar work. Simon Phillips' intense drumming on the wistful "Gone Flying" is to-die-for while guest vocalists Tim and Neil Finn add the right amoount of pop fizz. Easily one of his finest and a find for Roxy Music fans with a fondness for cuts like "Out Of The Blue" and "Mother Of Pearl". Recommended!

2 out of 5 stars badly dated record.......2000-02-17

If you want good pre-Avalon Manzanera get Diamond-Head and stay away from this record unless you like simplistic adolescent lyrics ('slow motion tv') and overly self-serious Geddy Lee-esque vocals (with lyrics triter than Peart's worst). Tim Finn of 'Split Enz' fame (infamy-?-) sings on many of the tracks and is painful to hear. John Wetton contributes one of his trademark Greg Lake vocal impersonations on 'numbers'. Really, the only listenable songs on the record are the instrumentals, 'k-scope' and 'n-shift'. The ultra cheesy production duo Godley and Creme make contributions to several tracks, and the fact that they are invisible here leads one to realize that most of the album is just as cheesy as they are; gorgonzola just can't compete with limberger, can it? In layman's terms, this album sucks; ignore any praise it may receive from essentialist rock critics who got their copies for free and don't care if you blow 14 clams on this slicked-out wank fest.

4 out of 5 stars The last of a strong phase in Manzanera's career........1999-06-21

This recording was preceeded by Diamond Head, Listen Now and 801 Live, wonderful recordings all. This is the last of that era before Manzanera assumed a different, more instrumentally focused direction. Many of the same musicians present in some of those earlier discs offer support in this fine recording. As a result, the performances are consistently strong. Well worth having. Highly recommended...Simon

4 out of 5 stars Your "Horace-Scope:" You Will Buy This CD.......2001-01-22

"Horace-Scope" is another classic recording from arguably the greatest edition of the Horace Silver Quintet. This edition of the pianist's group features Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor sax, Gene Taylor on bass and Roy Brooks on drums, and they certainly made some amazing recordings, from 1959's "Finger Poppin'" to 1964's classic "Song For My Father," where they appeared on half of the album. "Horace-Scope" was cut on July 8, 1960 and contains six stellar Silver songs, including the brilliant "Strollin'" and "Nica's Dream" (which first appeared on Blue Mitchell's "Blue Soul" -- see my review), and Don Newey's "Without You." My reason for giving this album only four stars is it does not quite compare to albums like its five-star predecessor "Blowin' The Blues Away" or its follow-up "Tokyo Blues" (see my review of the latter). However, it is well worth reading this "Horace-Scope."

      Album Description

Thalia Zedek has been making music for two decades in bands such as Dangerous Birds, Uzi, Live Skull, and Come. During a Summer 2002 heat wave, she sandwiched a few days in between European tour dates to record six songs with her musician friends in engineer Andy Hong's air conditionless living room. The hot result: four peerless originals and two covers, one by Bob Dylan whose title she borrows for this EP. Thalia once again proves, following her first solo effort Been Here and Gone on Matador Records, that whatever she applies her voice and vision to becomes part of a body of seemingly timeless musical works. There is an air of authority in its world-weariness, a certain sang froid that resists the musical trends of the day. Her songs sound lived in, thoroughly hers and of the moment. And it is always astounding how surefooted she is in choosing cover material and making it sound as if it's always had a place in the Zedek canon.

The Velvet Underground's "Candy Says," written by Lou Reed about Warhol-circle celebrity transvestite Candy Darling, is a natural for Thalia with its theme of alienation from the self and others. Such gender-bending subject matter plays itself out even more subtly in her moving version of Dylan's "You're a Big Girl Now": just make the conceptual jump to song narrator as woman. Here the theme is one of lost love, commonplace in Thalia's originals here as well. That's why, with such a preponderance of depressing lyrical concerns in her music, it's such a hoot to see this package's cover photo of Thalia lighting up a big fat stogie. You're a big girl now indeed. Delightful, yes, but a pose also suggesting the confidence with which she tackles her own songwriting. "Everything Unkind," "No Substitutions," and "No Fire" are simply as somberly grand as anything Thalia has written. And "JJ85," despite its almost sprightly gait in comparison to the other song tempos, still sounds quite! centered as it recounts even more dire circumstance. Thalia's band features immensely talented and long-favored folks: Daniel Coughlin from ex-band Come, Mel Lederman of Victory at Sea, and David Michael Curry of The Willard Grant Conspiracy. They impart to the material all the eloquence and gravitas needed to render these marvelous songs Zedek standards.

5 out of 5 stars Upside Band: A great New Rock Band.......2004-07-30

This is one of the greatest new bands that I have heard in a long time. They have true talent. Energyzing songs with good lyrics. Check them out, you will be glad you did.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-07-29

Why is it that the best bands in rock music today are always the hardest to find? This band is amazing and I'm not really sure why they are not more well known. I stumbled upon them when I was at Edgewater's website. I got my copy off of bestbuy.com. Do yourself a favor and pick this album up now, wherever you can find it!

5 out of 5 stars Pride of T-Town.......2004-04-17

      5 out of 5 stars Oklahoma's Best Kept Secret!.......2004-02-11

This album is probably the best find I have come across in a couple of years. The songwriting is amazing, the musicianship is fresh and the production values are so crisp and cutting edge. Get this album before they become HUGE!!

5 out of 5 stars Check these guys out.......2004-02-11

This disc is innovative, heartfelt, and all around a must have for any cd collection. If you don't make it a habit of looking into up and coming artists, start with Scope and History. If you value finding new artists who bring their own style to the table, don't miss out on these guys.

5 out of 5 stars More Sterling Silver.......2006-06-30

This 2006 reissue appears to be passing beneath the radar screen of many listeners, even though I doubt there's another Horace Silver album with a more infectious, irresistible "grabber." Without so much as a pick-up note, the first measure of the first tune thrusts you into as groovin' a tune as Silver ever wrote: "Strollin'." (If you don't know the tune, I guarantee that it will make you forget "Song for My Father," "Senor Blues," and "The Preacher.")

Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook are exceptionally tight on the ensemble passages while complementing one another with their strikingly different solo styles, Mitchell's lyrical lines and smooth, rich sound contrasting with Cook's scorching probes and vibratoless, brambly-edged tone. Blue blows flawlessly throughout, but it's Junior who makes the memorable statements on both "Strollin'" and "Yeah," saving his top tones for the moments when they matter most.

Horace is still the catch-phrase, percussive pianist, perhaps at his best when he limits his solo time (his piano solo on "Strollin'" is a curious combination of 'Mairzy Dotes" and "St. Thomas"). What strikes me as most original about his soloing are the bass-note clusters he drops like bombs in his left-hand (an influence from his playing days with Blakey?).

Thanks to Roy Brooks (what an underrated drummer!), this session swings as much as Horace's early dates with Blakey. At the same time, the faster, more perfunctory version of "Nica's Dream" on this Blue Note session is a reminder that, though a 5-star Silver offering, "Horace-Scope" is no "The Jazz Messengers," the eponymous 1956 Columbia date that not only features a deeper, more evocative "Nica's Dream" but represents Silver, Mobley, Byrd, Watkins, Blakey and company at arguably their collective, creative best.

4 out of 5 stars Your "Horace-Scope:" You Will Buy This CD.......2006-02-15

Of the recent batch of six RVG reissues, Horace Silver's "Horace-Scope" is the most head-scratching release, mainly because the original CD incarnation never went out-of-print and is still readily available, even new on Amazon. Despite this, it is another classic recording from arguably the greatest edition of the Horace Silver Quintet, and great to have in this remastered version. Performing in the pianist's group are regulars Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor sax, Gene Taylor on bass and Roy Brooks on drums, and they certainly made some amazing recordings, from 1959's "Finger Poppin'" to 1964's classic "Song For My Father," where they appeared on half of the album.
