Album Description

Ladybug Mecca returns with a body of work that she considers a combination of her life experiences. She is back and stronger than ever with her highly anticipated solo release "Trip the Light Fantastic".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Plesant surprise.......2007-07-02

I've always been a fan of Digable Planets, mainly because of the funky vibe from Ladybug, so I figured that her solo album would be everything I liked about DP, just lacking Doodlebug and Butterfly.

I was kinda right.

It was all that and more. I remember Ladybuy describing her album as "music", rather than tying it down to a single genre, and the album is evidence to its truth. From her classic hiphop/spoken word vibe from DP, to her ventures into alt-rock vibes, pop-ish sounds, jazzy and new-age sounds, the album's all over the place, yet they all share a similar ambiance that Ladybug's vocals create.

No other featured vocalists (aside from the skits), but it's nothing to trip about, ladybug keeps it poppin. Def recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Proof most good music is outside the mainstream.......2006-07-05

This is a great album! If I had to compare her to someone, I'd say Mystic, but their flows are very different. What they do have in common is an effortless shift from rapping to singing and a refreshingly fresh sound. And unlike many "solo" efforts by female rappers, the album is not dominated by featured vocalists; she actually performs almost all of the vocals on the album.
The solo debut of the female Digable Planets member is very eclectic. It goes from Hip Hop to R&B to Pop to Rock to... some stuff I'd hesitate to categorize. This may explain the lack of radio play, but that usually means an artist's music is not trite or cliché.
The 18 tracks consist of an intro (track 1), a skit (track 14), and 16 songs. Lyrics are not included in the booklet. The CD is not in a jewel case - it is in a two-panel unlatched flip-open cardboard jacket with a plastic CD holder.

5 out of 5 stars Takin it to the next.......2006-02-26

I've followed Dig Ps since back in the day and have never stopped listening to their UNBEATABLE beats, rhymes and lyrical content. Sometimes the whole is greater than the parts (ie, Tribe Called Quest). Well apparently this part is as great as the whole. Ladybug lays down some crazy phat tracks in a great mix of genres. If you want pure hip hop you'll only get a few tracks of that here, but if you have an open mind or at least enjoy music from various genres then you will LOVE this cd. As original as you can get without loosing your audience, as accessible as the latest radio pop and with lyrical content to keep the philosopher and the thug happy.

5 out of 5 stars She's Back On Time/Broadcast Where We See/Run & Tell A Friend.......2006-02-10

Our Sista of Conciousness Ladybug Mecca has been through a lot since the days of Blowout Comb, and now reappears with an evolved and deeply thoughtful pastiche of new gems. Many of the tracks have a real airiness about them, though we do hear the more familiar Ladybug/Mecca of yesteryear on at least a couple of tracks. Musical arrangements: impeccable. Creativity: way outside the box. Singing: ethereal. This album is a steal at fourteen bucks for 18 great tracks.

I wrote this review while listening to the album beginning to end. Lyrics in parentheses are ones I guessed at. Though not an easy task, I would rank the tracks in order from most superb to least superb but still good as follows: 15, 4, 9, 13, 12, 5, 11, 14, 18, 16, 3, 17, 8, 7, 2, 1, 10, 6

1. Dark Matter. A very nice instrumental intro. Wind chimes. Makes you think because of the title. If you listen with headphones, you can hear some conversation in the background. Not sure what it's about.

2. Don't Disturb the Peace. This one's an alt-rock style track. Very short and to the point. "...she didn't know the consequence of being an unconditional punching bag breathing"... "Oh, what a mental game--so irrational--Have you ever had a conversation with a head case?" This was the first song that caught my attention, not only because it's the first song on the album, but because of that hook. I think this is going to turn out to be a very revealing album. "What is up with you when you just talk that shi+ and don't live up to that? Sucka-free, now sucka, get back." Damn those abusive relationships.

3. Children Say. "I used to hang out in my room, just sit around watching TV. I'd watch the stories on the news. I'd swear it all was deceiving `mysterious weather patterns sweep the nation'... I close my eyes, a child... *dag, am I going to live to see my 15th birthday???* I ask my mommy why... the situation has come as far to this." Interesting trip back in time. Children know when things ain't right. Young Ladybug was no exception.

4. Ladybug Come Outside. A funky, bouncy track that re-introduces the hip hop Ladybug to those who have been waiting for so long. I love it! "Raise your right fist, in Goddess we trust. Mama Earth where we dwell (is adverse to us).....[She's flows on this one] It's the beginning of the end, the beginning of the end, of the paradigm shift, so...run `n' tell a friend. " "Walk the walk with those like-minded. Talk the talk... to the ones that are blinded." "Ladybug, Ladybug, spit one rhyme. Miss Ladybug Mecca, do you still have time?" "Ladybug, Ladybug, my oh my, I'm glad you left the game, `cause you back on time."

5. Show the World. Another airy, mellow track with a Latin feel that showcases the beauty of Ladybug's singing voice. "You're 9-to-5'ing, your bills are piling, but there's no dollar still"... "The streets is violent, your daughter's wyling, you've done all you can do"... "Smile with your eyes...speak with your heart...and show the world some soul...show the world...it ain't easy...show the world...this is you." "A bad decision...the wrong religion...we all are on our path..." "Sometimes we may fall, it's all good, we will make it ..." "Smile with your eyes..."

6. Mr. Mayor. A rock'n'rollish track that hasn't quite grown on me yet, but has a lot of interesting experimentation, including a little scratching here and there and some guitar riffs. "Parade around like you've got something to do; if you're livin' for the people, why do I see right through?" "You are (a fraud), you are (not large), you are (not in charge)." I hope I got those lyrics right-kind of difficult to decipher.

7. Dogg Starr. Wow. A track called Sirius B/Dog Star. She's rapping on this track and "All the way live, everyday life, live from Earth-yo, I hit you from the Dog Star... broadcast where we see-Sirius B." "Now you see the complexity it takes to compete--simple minds and simple rhymes play the back seat. Regu-lar shi+ lo-ses, don't get abused, kid." A lot of interesting sound/music effects going on here as well.

8. Leaving It All Behind. A little vignette of a conversation/debate between Mecca and a homegirl during which Mecca floats away into dreams of leaving the projects for the beach. Segues into another very light, airy, flute-enhanced, Latin-flavoured ditty that, to my mind, recalls 1970's feel-good songs that became TV show soundtracks. "Sheeeeeee walks alone, but she says she'll never cry... Sheeeeeeee says that the game's an illusion, living in twisted confusion.....and she's leaving them all behiiiiind." "Sheeeeee loves to play with ladybugs in trees...sheeeeeees gone bon voyage on a journey, giving into all the yearning, and relieving her slave-made mind..." Ends with her heading off to catch her bus and bidding farewell to her homegirl.

9. Sexual Alchemy. Keep up with the pace, now. Do I hear a Fela Kuti horns intro??? Oh my GOSH, this is TOO funky!!! Oh, this is off the hook. "To the break of May, or to Auset, catch me in a fre-quen-cy--unh. In your wildest dreams, ever knew this thing? Sexual Al-che-my--unh." "Let us come two-gether like mag-netic. Imagine there's no pain, `magine there's no shame, no longer each other to blame. Dabble in a little bit... if you don't like it, split." Now see, this here is artistry. What a complete and total reinvention of the squeaky, rusty wheel. There's much more, but you've gotta buy the cow to get the milk, darlings.

10. Centre of Nowhere. There's some more Latin flavour here, and a lot of harmonizing. Another throwback to the `70s. I can tell there's some EWF influence here. More flutes. I just love it. "Living at the center of nowhere, puncturing your wings, knowing change will come." "All you've got to do is tell yourself to leave the burden behind you." Definitely sounds like Esthero on this one.

11. Please Don't. More Latin flavour! I LOVE the drum intro! Some spoken word, too 4 ya! Mellow. "So... please don't, unless you like the rejection of my tone..." "He thinks he's really that slick cat. He thinks he's intelligent, all that. [Wow, reminds me of Jill Scott!] Well, Supafly, check out the headlines. Chicks like me, we see you from miles & miles." "It's cool and all, that now you can talk that junk--got the noni, then you ran like a punk. But we know the truth though, you really in a smokeless funk--took a tad, now you think you a hunk. You're just imaginin', fathomin' havin' it like that. When you abuse your sexuality, it makes you feminine, Jack. Who wants a man like that? And that's a fact. So please keep it movin', `cause there ain't no turnin' back." H!Hwellll.

12. Last Train. Oh, a really nice jazzy one. Martin Luther: "Last train for Mary will be leaving (choo-choooo), better get your ticket. Headed for freedom, it's time to shiiiiiine." This is a fun one. I feel like doing the Lindy Hop. Listen to that piano! Ladybug: "It was 7:45 in the a.m.--I am... taking time off for Mec, and you know how... I keep it going, `cause things are what I make it, and who I am is mine for sure." Martin Luther: "You got me huffin' and puffin', I'm chuggin' like a choo-choo train (Choo! Choo!)... the state of the world might make you want to go insane... so keep on pushin' `til you reach a better day." Ladybug: "Embrace the spirits around you. Be one with the sun, devour your power." "The intentions of your soul is pure. Your mind is deeper than the ocean floor." "It's like shimmy shimmy cocoa puff, shimmy shimmy sham. I'm gonna buy myself some gold, and buy myself some land." *snapping to the melody*

13. Sweet & Polite. Oh, I like this one. "I'm always on my job, straight creepin' through the fog..." I LOVE this song! "...up top, cop it--bet. You know it's...LadyBug Mecc..... Fall-in...to my velocity, and do a couple ohms and open up to something clear." "She's so sweet and polite, petite and (on the blithe). A rebel on the outskirts, cute, clever, make it hurt. She's so sweet and polite, petite and (on the blithe). Tricky like I'm doin' dirt, cute, clever, make it hurt." Sprinkle a lil' Portuguese lingo about here and there. "Cops hide behind the gun, kid shot the same night, oh shi+, that's what's up, be prepared to head it up."

14. Suicidethol. Time for a little commercial break.

Ladybug: "Walking through the park used to be such a drag. My runny nose would always let me know that Spring was on the way. But since I've started taking Suicidathol, I have no secretions at all." Gentleman: "Suicidathol killufast tablets help control natural body fluids by drying them up permanently, over a short period of time-in most cases. It can help you feel confident that your nose won't run ever again. Common side effects include kidney failure, liver damage.......muscle pain, fast heartbeat, sore throat and urinating every two minutes." This is a hilarious parody! I've only given bits & pieces of it.

15. You Never Get Over It. My very favorite song on the whole entire album. Starts slow, then is upbeat but melancholy. "What do you think of first thing when you wake up? What do you think of when the one you love is suf-fer-ing the most? What do you do when some-one tells you they're going away for a long, long time and the echoes from the pit of your heart keeps go-ing and they don't stop, no, no, they just don't stop." "Standing on the top of the roof just look-ing up. A sprinkle of cotton and turquoise blow as re-ality stings when the (*?*) rings. What do you do when someone tells you they're going away, and you must be brave, and there's gonna be some time and a little re-action, but it's the way and it's not going to change and.." "...loneliness and visions of you got me react-in a language a girl can't even imagine... loneliness and visions of you got me re-act-in a language a girl can't articulate when it... comes to love I have for you, for you. Comes to love I have for you, for you, for you." "What good does it do when your definitions can't de-fine the emotion through your religion?" This song is incredibly deep and touching once you find out Sista Mecca lost both parents within a short time of one another following the recording of the Blowout Comb album.

16. Remember When? You guessed it. Some more Latin flava. Trance makes an appearance. Drumming, Spanish guitar, background chant-like vocalizing. "Remember when I touched your soul? I know that I was outta control. Are you Dogon? Where are you from? You're not from here. Wanna make you mine, protect you. This is divine, I respect you." Some more Portuguese crooning. Something really out of this world tends to occur whenever Spanish guitar & percussion are overlayed. Outstanding.

17. Oh Poor You. This one has a "rock" feel to it. "My life has been nothing but a blessing to date. Even through the unknown confessions of hate." "And for the so-called profit...dude, you need to stop it." "My trust lies in the Truth between the lines. And everyday's a test of the soul, I know. It took a while to sift through the weeds in the garden. Deeply rooted demons (in deceit) for my stardom. Yeah, she's back and with the synergy. Retrograde couldn't even stop my energy. Or the gravity pull a woman has on a man when the moon is full and in demand, yeah." "Oh poor you. So sad and so con-fused. You want mercy. Just thirst the attention, and you thrill in your neglection." Oops. Somebody wasn't worthy, mature or understanding enough to wear the King's crown.

18. Step Up Wise. Oh! Snap to this! Here comes the Rebirth of Slick bass groove. No mistaking this one. "No, it's no joke, no game, it's live. You want the Truth, *slick*, step up wise." "...Unh like it is, yeah, cold, green light. Queens, don't stress, don't fuss, don't fight." "Again, it's the *slick*, I kissed it and blessed it. Never have to ask, is there born another classic? Go'n switch your car, it don't matter, that's chatter. But we joke: How I zone? (Yeah... you know how it goes.)"

4 out of 5 stars nickle slick rebirth..........2005-07-17

uhhh...

i caint lie... i was expeckin the rebirth of the rebirth of slick or sumphn.

i dint quite get it... instead... i got pleasantly surprised...

lilsista seriously comes thru soundin more like res or esthero than her ol' old way, and that's not a bad thang.
(unless'n you jus some ol' hard-rock/stubborn as hell and dont wanna give in to the progressiveness of an artist... that aint you is it?)

but,
i caint lie #2... ladybug remains one of our top two female hip hop artists (lauryn hill's the other) and I WAS A HOPIN AND A WISHIN for her to kick it like she useta... if she dont carry the weight, then who?

'trip the light' is more enjoyable to me than aya or m.i.a.'s cd... (my opinion)

so get this
and slip into a whole nother kinda cool...

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CD........2006-05-27

This CD is worth every penny. All the songs in this CD are great. Some people want to compare this band to Chimaira but they have their own unique sound. I went to see them live and Noah's voice is the real deal. He has an incredible vocal range. The guitars and drumming are incredible. This is a must have CD for your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Bleed the Sky.......2006-04-18

I really wasn't expecting much from this band, considering the recent METALCORE OVERDOSE flooding the market and the association of the word "Bleed" in a band name with awful music. I was getting kind of sick of Metalcore but this was one of few i don't regret listening too. First off, the drummer kicks ass, the guitars are great, and there singer has a yell that is reminicent of Mark Hunter from Chimaira. He even has a half decent singing voice, although it does sound heavily FXed often times. If your going to compare this band to Chimaira, then lets compare them in an area where they will be better then Chimaira for the reviews sake. What im trying to say is if you were to put Bleed the Sky's debut "Paradigm in Entropy" next to Chimaira's debut "Pass Out of Existence" i'd say Bleed the Sky would own Chimaira. I'll look forward to a future release by these guys and see what direction they've decided to go in, definite potential here. If you like Chimaira, or Metalcore in general i'd recommend this record.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Album.......2006-04-18

I must've listened to Bleed The Sky's debut album "Paradigm In Entropy" like 4 or 5 times already. Whenever I listen to this album, it just warps straight into my head, and I just can't get enough of it. These guys reminds me of Chimaira alot (one of my favorite bands), but with more intense shrieks and more clean singing. Noah Robinson has a nice vocal range, going from a vicious shriek like scream to an awesome clean singing voice that's not overdone which is a good thing. Guitarists Kyle Moorman and Wayne Miller have some nice crushing dual riffs and even a few solos which is pretty nice (although I wish they could've done more solos on here, but oh well there's always next time). But it's Austin D'Ammond's drumming on here that really gets my attention. This album is chock full of sick double bass drum patterns throughout that really get your adrenaline going. The album kicks off with a bang with my favorite song "Minion". I just love that solo near the ending, it kicks ass. The next three songs "Killtank", "Paradigm In Entropy", and "Skin Un Skin" are juggernauts of ripping double bass drum patterns and searing riffs that'll rip your bare flesh off. Other good songs including "Leverage" and "The Martyr" showcase Noah's clean singing abilities. The other songs are good, but those are my favorites. So anyways if you're a fan of Chimaira, then I suggest you give Bleed The Sky a shot. Grab a can of Monster Energy, put this badboy in your stereo, turn the volume full blast, and raise those horns. Peace Out!

3 out of 5 stars From Europe, with love...aha..........2006-03-30

Well, let me just say one thing...im european, and I dont understand why some american people put american metal down to nothing, as if the only thing you do is to copy the pure grain european metal...let me disagree. I didnt knew Bleed the Sky, until I bought this album, and really...its a good album. The vocals could be better, the drums are quite good, and guitars convince...I think they do sound great, not original, but they can create a sound of their own. Very intense music, good to listen, and worth buying.
Its true it still sounds raw, but give the guys a chance, and time to build up their sound...some great bands only achieved that after 3/4 albuns. And do not despise american metal, you still have some of the greatest metal bands.

5 out of 5 stars great band .......2006-01-28

As feel-good friendly as a vintage Tom Petty anthem. As singsong jangly as an old Irish Rovers standard. And every bit as backwoods basic as some Carter Family lament from the '30s. Nope. There's not much fault to be found with the pint-swilling, rafter-raising folk-rock of Celtic crooners the Saw Doctors. This is the ultimate party band, whose "N17" is--in addition to being one of the biggest-selling singles in Irish history--best experienced live, with every voice in the house jumping in on the call-and-response chorus. Revolving around the hearth-fire vocals of guitarist Davy Carton, SD discs may not quite capture that frantic energy, but they're typically more of the "N17" same. Sun Street is no exception. It's a warm, personable effort, with trademark pub pleasers ("Tommy K," "Catriona Tells Lies," and the goofy "D'ya Wanna Hear My Guitar?") complementing plush, gentle ballads ("Galway and Mayo," "Heading for the Sunshine," a nursery-rhyme-ish "Away with the Fairies"). Lift a Guinness to the lads. The world needs more true-blue bands like the Saw Doctors. --Tom Lanham

4 out of 5 stars Rollicking music....now, where's my Guinness?.......2000-12-21

I picked up this album not long ago on a whim. Having heard only a few of the Doctors' songs, I didn't know what to expect from a full album. Well, now I know I didn't waste my money. This is a rollicking set of songs that gets better with each listen...whether or not I'm sipping a Guinness. Standouts include "Best of Friends," "Galway and Mayo" and, my personal favorite, "Carry Me Away" (a haunting ballad). For sheer toe-tapping pleasure, you can't beat "Heading for the Sunshine" and the neo-traditional "Joyce Country Ceili Band" (listen for the smile-inducing lyrics). Folks, this album proves that Irish music is so much more than "Danny Boy" and the Irish Tenors. I'll be sure to catch the Doctors the next time they're in the States.

5 out of 5 stars Another "Saw Doctors" Triumph.......2000-04-02

While I agree with another reviewer that you can't capture the excitement of the "Saw Doctors'" live performances on a cd, I have to say that I play this disc more than any other that I own... It's got every type of music that the Doctors' fans have come to expect...ones detailing yearnings for distinctly Irish events and places, some that are toe-tappingly fun, and the last one, which I plan to put in my will to be played at my funeral someday (listen to it, and you'll get my point! )...a great disc!

5 out of 5 stars Unmatchable FUN!.......1999-05-03

Outstanding album! If you want my thoughts on it, read the Amazon review above. If you want my thoughts on the band, read on.

I saw the Docs in NYC on St. Pat's day and ended up staying another day SOLELY so I could see them again the next night. It was at those shows that I first heard many of the songs on Sun Street and I was ecstatic when the album finally came out.

This band tore the house down!!! I worked at a Cabaret in college and NEVER saw anything like the craic to be had at a Saw Doctors concert. Imagine a house full of twentysomethings, all hoisting their Harps, whipped into a frenzy by the high-energy tunes and familiar lyrics of the premier Irish folk rock band in the land.

The Saw Doctors take you back to a time when playing music was fun - not a business. The sense you get when you see them is that they took an Irish tradition, playing music, and turned it up a notch, adding electric guitars to the flute and accordion, and making it (more) fun in the process. They don't take themselves, or their music, too seriously, and that's part of what makes it so grand.

If you're curious, check them out. Look them up on the web and go to their next concert. (They play the Fleadh's in the States, but they're better indoors.) But be prepared. I GUARANTEE you'll have the time of your life.

4 out of 5 stars Sounds just like the Pogues quit drinking........1999-01-04

This cheery mix of listenable four-leaf clovers lets us all know what would have happened if the Pogues had quit drinking in their prime. Although this CD was forced on me by my former boss, I have played it TWICE of my OWN FREE WILL...which is pretty good considering ginger beer isn't exactly my bag. Thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars great cd, still keeping the traditional irish sound.......1999-01-03

I am a major fan of The Saw Doctors and I own all of their cd's. I am pleased to say that The Doctors have kept their own unique sound that I thoroughly enjoy. To all The Saw Doctors fans out there, A GREAT BUY.

Best known as a featured singer in the musical Riverdance, Katie McMahon debuts with this fine CD on Paradigm Records, featuring members of the Riverdance band. McMahon's classically trained voice positively soars on this album, with a bright, clear sweetness reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt. "Galeno" opens the CD, a ballad in which McMahon's voice is underscored chiefly by acoustic guitar. "Heartland" (from Riverdance) is similar, while the title track (the story of a noblewoman who rescues her love from being hanged) is a fine unaccompanied performance. There are faster songs as well, such as "'Til the Sun Comes Up (Nil Se'n La)," "Down the Moor," and "Breda's Jigs," featuring the dancing rhythms that have made Irish music so popular. Overall, this is a great debut from one of Ireland's loveliest voices. --Genevieve Williams

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2001-10-09

Most singers sound totally different in person than on CD's. I had the privelage of hearing Ms. McMahon sing at a local Borders and she just blew me away! What a great voice and she even makes the sad songs sound happy! This CD has some classical as well as new songs on it and I never liked harp music before hearing what a truly talented player/singer could do with it.

5 out of 5 stars Katie has the voice of an angel!!!.......2001-07-27

What can I say that everyone who has heard her voice hasn't already said?

Like many people I first heard that divinely lovely voice when I saw Riverdance on PBS. And since I don't want to rave about Riverdance here, I'll simply say that it's WONDERFUL.

This album is really good because she chose what she wanted to sing. I particularly like the song called "Heather On The Moor," also really good is "After The Morning."

I absolutely plan to buy all of her subsuqnent albums!

5 out of 5 stars Katie McMahon----Queen of the Celts.......2001-03-13

"After the Morning" is brilliant!!! After hearing Katie on the video of "Riverdance: Live from New York", I had to buy the album, and I am very glad I made this purchase. I haven't stopped listening to it for ages! Recommended!!!! =)

3 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped for, really.......2000-04-27

If you've fallen in love with Katie McMahon as I have, through her performances in 'Riverdance' and with the choral ensemble Anuna, then you may find this cd to be a bit of a letdown. As the 'Riverdance' performance demonstrates (particularly the video), Katie has an incredible power underlying that sweet soprano, and an ability to project bell-like clarity. But her voice on this cd, while certainly pretty, seems somehow restrained, as if the studio environment or the sparse instrumentation prevented her from really exploiting her gift. And the decision to multi-track her voice in harmonized parts was a bad one; her voice is too rich to be layered effectively (the tunes in which she harmonizes with a male vocalist fare much better, as the sonority of the male voice compliments rather than detracts). Ultimately, these production decisions were probably producer Jim Higgins' rather than Katie's. But in any event, her voice deserves to be framed more elegantly than it is here (as it has been framed so brilliantly in Anuna, especially the 'Invocation' cd).

In terms of the song selection, the inclusion of 'Heartland' from 'Riverdance' is striking here, if only because its charming and memorable melody stands in such contrast to the other tunes, many of which are lacking in depth.

One other minor complaint: why a running time of only 36 minutes? This would have been a short vinyl LP! Since the songs are not originals, but rather culled from the traditional repertoire, why not select three or four more and bring the recording up to a more acceptable length?

In all, given her stunning voice and impressive track record, this is a disappointing solo debut.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2000-01-17

Katie does have the voice of an angel. Having listened to her since her days with Anuna (pre-Riverdance), I have always been drawn to her music. Having met her in person, I can also say that behind her beuatiful voice is an extremely nice and lovely person. I wait with much anticipation for her next album which is being worked on as I write this.

Osunlade has managed with something that very few House producers have succeeded with- to PRODUCE a coherent and forward-thinking house album that keeps you interested from the beginning to the end. It's house music at its best. He managed to create a sound collage that integrates African rhythms with Brazilian Bossa Nova and old school Chicago house. Even though this album is only available on import, I promise you it's worth the money. You will not regret the purchase of this album. Enjoy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Mark is a compositional genius! Majestic release!.......2004-12-02

Mark Dwane is criminally underrated in my opinion. 'Paradigm Shift' is a multilayered compositional masterpiece in every respect, and up there with the best releases from electronic keyboard masters like Vangelis and Patrick O'Hearn. I hear many exotic influences in his music, including oriental and middle eastern themes. Superb work!

    4 out of 5 stars A good find........1998-12-19

This CD is actually out and in circulation and as of late 1998 Mark has an even newer, limited release CD out called "The Nefilim", which is also well worth a listen.

Mark's fourth CD effort takes him into more compositionally complex and dynamic terrain. He mixes the lushness of the first three, with newer structure in the tunes. After his best CD, Angels... this might be next, but the standards he has set for himself are so high that in the hands of another artist, this would rank higher. That's how talented he is.

4 out of 5 stars Constantly blown away........2004-02-20

I am just listening to this album now for the second time. Half the songs on here leave me slack jawed with awe and reaching for the CD case to see what artist is playing. Tear Garden sound like they are trying to be SubCon's version of The Cure though?!? LYRICS?? WHAT??
With that exeption, all the songs on here are at least good. I only bought it for the Download song, so I am WELL impressed. Wild Planet is pretty good, too. Can't say which IS best - like I said, I've only just got this one. And WHO the HELL are 'Kone'? That track is AMAZING. Can we have some more please?

    4 out of 5 stars Without Puppy, there's... this!.......2000-10-05

This is a great compilation of side projects from the Key catalog. My only gripe is that the Tear Garden material seems out of place on this release. Although I like Tear Garden, it detracts from the compilation's techno/industrial feel. Nevertheless, the rest of the disc is excellent, especially the songs from ADUCK. I'll miss him very much! Brap on.

    5 out of 5 stars A Subconscious Masterpiece!.......2000-06-10

This is the best compilation album on the market right now. Buy It! If you are even a little into electronic music... Buy It! It blew my mind & still does! :-} Highly recommended Anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Every c.Key/D.R.Goettel fan should have this CD!.......2000-01-21

If you enjoyed Skinny Puppy's music for the incredible melodies and noises coming from apparently dischordant chaos, get this CD. If you are an electronica fan and want to listen to some of the best stuff ever to come out of Vancouver, get this CD.

Not really for "industrial" fans, though - this is probably a little too tame.

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Find.......1999-09-12

This CD provides fans the chance to obtain seven unreleased tracks from Skinny Puppy related bands such as Download, Doubting Thomas, and The Tear Garden not to mention the original Subconscious 001 release with Aduck (dwayne goettel's solo project). In my opinion, the previously unreleased song Melt by Skinny Puppy alone is worth the money.

    5 out of 5 stars A new fan.......1999-12-23

I ordered this based on a friend's recommendation and I always trust her taste in music. This time she was WRONG! She said it was a great CD, but it was the most incredible new music to come along in such a long time. It really moved me. I'm ordering another for a friend I like to turn on to new great artists. I look forward to hearing alot more from Bruce Henderson in the future. Is musical genius too strong of word? I think not.

4 out of 5 stars NEW CD AND EVERYTHING IS FINE.......1999-09-28

OK, so behind every great talent there is great management. If you read my earlier review of this magnificent CD you will note that I complained about a problem with the CD. Luckily, Mr. Henderson's manager had posted his email address at the top of the review section and when I notified him of the problem , he replaced my faulty CD within days. It is rare to find a CD that is defected, but it's even rarer to find such a fast response to the problem. It seems that Mr. Thomas believes not only in Mr. Henderson's talent, but in his fans as well. From what I hear, the problem with the CD was limited to my copy so PLEASE, do not let that stop you from BUYING THIS CD. It is amazing. Another review on this page calls Beyond the Pale a career album. That pretty much sums it up. You can compare the sound with as many artist as you'd like, but the songs from Beyond the Pale are beyond compare. Look At You Now,Bone Tired, I Wanted To, and of course Speed Rack are just wonderful little gems waiting to be discovered. Do yourself a favor, discover them now. Albums like this don't come around very often, nor do artist. And in my opinion, nor do managers.

5 out of 5 stars A career album. NO PROBLEM WITH THE CD IN USA!.......1999-09-18

I was anxious to hear this album as I have Bruce's debut solo CD "The Wheels Roll." "The Wheels Roll" is an excellent album, but I think "Beyond The Pale" places Bruce among the ranks of the truly great American singer-songwriters. There is not a bad cut on the album. I have read reviews comparing Bruce to Bob Dylan, The Wallflowers and Guy Clark, but make no mistake, his is an original voice. The songs are very literate, and the production is flawless. This is an album you can listen to again and again. Some favorite cuts: I Wanted To, Look At You Now, and Running Out Of Light. This is an artist working at the height of his powers. Incidentally, I read the review of the CD from the guy in Tokyo and I had to wonder if he had purchased a bootleg copy. I have no problem with my CD, and neither does a friend that I recommended it to. I highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but the cd's are faulty.......1999-09-13

This is a great album. Years ago I bought Hearts and Minds on CD and thought I had discovered the next BIG thing. Soon after I saw that Andy York was playing with Mellencamp, and I wondered what happened to Mr. Henderson. I read about this CD and couldn't wait to hear it, and I will tell you, it's been a long time since I first heard this guy, but the wait was worth it. Beyond the Pale is just amazing. The first song is nothing more than a friend telling you about his weekend, sung (spoken) just the way you would expect to hear it in real life. Not so much a conquest, as two people NEEDING to be together. Nothing more and nothing less. What follows is truly one of the finest songs ever written to a past love SPEED RACK. This song was included on the Hearts and Minds CD and I loved it then and now in this stripped down version, it's even more powerful, letting the singer's bitterness and saddness towards an ex girlfriend get the better of him. Bruce sings it like a raw nerve, ever arrow fired in the ex's direction comes back to the singer himself. Powerful stuff, but played well and sung with the voice of a man who has lived these songs. There are tons of other songs on this CD that deserve mention, LOOK AT YOU NOW, being the first to come to mind, but there is a more urgent matter to discuss. The CD is faulty. The volume drops in and out in various places on almost all of the songs. I took the first copy back to the store and had to wait a few weeks for them to replace it (I live in Japan so it took awhile) and when I played the new one it was also defective, with the drop out in all the same places (most noticable on the first five songs) However, as annoying as this problem is, it should and does not reflect on the songs or talent of this artist. Get this CD, it is a worth the price, even if you can't find a non-defective copy.
