Orbus Terrarum

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
The Orb's third full-length studio album states its intention with its title: where their first two records had explored the outer cosmos of dance music, Terrarum is an earthier, less spacy ambient record, more devoted to mapping the sounds at hand. It goes to extremes to avoid the hooks of their early work, and there's barely even a hint of dance beats. When they do appear, they're mutated, bassy, more to pass through the body than to move to. Considered as music to "listen to," it's mostly pretty dull (though the 17-minute "Slug Dub" is worthy of the Augustus Pablo records and stoned realizations that inspired it). But then Orbus isn't meant to reward attention--it's an album to sit down and dream to. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars A Seperate Orbit.......2007-01-10

I started with this Orb, and went on to others. This favorite leaves the others behind, in my cd case. Something to note about The Orb; it knows how to inject crazy, and sometimes charming humor in a way that causes you to laugh out of surprise in the midst of your reverie.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Opiate.......2006-08-25

This is by far the best Orb disc, and my 'most played' album ever, by far. There is something magical about this disc, as some members have attempted to explain.
It hits you, it fills you, and it moves you. I remember listening to this in college and having many odd experiences. Listening to this album, while sleeping, will also give you the most vivid dreams imaginable. Its music that truly escapes, transcends, and numbs you. Clear your mind of all and have a listen, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Orbs true labour of love.......2006-03-13

This sounds like their most detailed work..Every track is completely solid, there is no orb filler to be found on this album..An earnest attempt by the artist to be taken more seriously as one, although it would later be found that Patterson is the last artist who would want to continue the seriousness that was this album...Despite the last song having the voice of a drugged out slug telling an almost indecipherible childrens tale in between beats, the music is about the most mature orb have ever put out, that track in particualr being a spellbinding display of overlapping dub beat programming, but on the whole carving out an extremely natural, different direction on every single track, taking electronic, especially Orb, to a classier, less labled place.

Pure mastery of the Orbs own sound is what this record is. Pomme Fritz touches the same vein. If you have followed the Orb and have enjoyed their progress up to this records point then you should be blown away. I view this as the Orbs opus. Huge dub basslines, dub delay all masterfully executed. A pure joy to listen to. Paterson is a hero if not electronic god.

plateau is the most beautiful song ever written - period. slug dub is very amusing and sometimes funny. this should be the next album that you purchase.
