Mark Stewart was the lead vocalist and revolutionary sloganeer behind the Pop Group, now cited as one of the most influential post-punk bands. In the 1980's and thru the 1990's he went on to form Mark Stewart and The Mafia releasing a range of heavily politicised, boundary-pushing albums fusing electronic, dub, twisted disco, and industrial strength hip-hop into a unique ground breaking sound. Curated by Mark Stewart, 'Kiss The Future' is a mixture of new material (with new collaborators such as The Bug, Sanjay T), classic material from the legendary Pop Group 'We Are All Prostitutes', 'We Are Time', 'She's Beyond Good And Evil', as well as Stewart's groundbreaking solo work from the 1980's to the present day with the legendary Sugarhill Records/Tommy Boy rhythm section (as The Mafia) along with producer Adrian Sherwood (On U Sound). For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

While maybe not perfect, this gives you a pretty good idea of what mark stewart has been making over some decades. It starts with stuff from his Pop Group period and moves well into the Mark Stewart and Maffia stuff that I prefer.

this completely blew me away. i;ve never been a on u sound or mark stewart completist . for me this hits the best dub moments of stewart's career. i've read reviews that say this isn't complete enough. how could it be, stewart's been around awhile. still, the dubbed out tracks on here make you realize the dub genius of adrian sherwood and mark stewart. the pop group really updated dub in the era of the late 70's. stewart continued and continues to break ground in the area of distorted-in your face- dub productions. from track 1 - 12 i had a huge smile on my face!

      While so many Irish bands content themselves with the label "Celtic" and try to prove how fast they can play, Providence aims for the heart of a tune or song. In many ways, they're a throwback to the Bothy Band and Planxty, as well as the heyday of the Irish folk revival, but their retro style is also thoroughly refreshing. The accordion, whistle, and fiddle interweave beautifully on pieces such as "The Providence Reel/Roscommon Reel/Fred Finn's," creating a tapestry that highlights the nuances and delights of the melodies rather than focusing attention on the individual musicians. Singer Joan McDermott brings a luminous quality to songs like the majestic "The Jolly Young Ploughboy" and the lovely "Se Fath Mo Bhuartha" while the instrumentalists offer full but unobtrusive backing. To crown it all, they close with a live track, "Music in the Glen/Sean Sa Cheo"--recorded, ironically, in Scotland--that shows how their studio flair translates perfectly to the stage.             With a Breeders-like minimalism SSKHKH lullaby us through near-campy hard rock. The lyrics are poetic and can be weird. Are they weird on purpose? It's anybody's guess. These are kind of cute, kind of emotional, mostly arranged, seldom experimental, incredible little songs.
