Four stars just for the Gun Club cover of SEX BEAT!.......2005-05-19

Honestly, I haven't heard the whole album yet but I got the single for their cool electro-gothic remake of THE GUN CLUB's classic early 80s swamp-rockabilly stomp SEX BEAT - a likely candidate for my favorite song EVER! While not reaching the brilliance of the original (how could you?), the Swordsmen don't try to copy the song - instead, they invest it with an astmopheric, almost menacing electro-tech vibe, coupled with Bauhaus-type vocals and a rumbling deep bass below - it works a charm, and makes me want to hear the rest. Long live JEFFREY LEE PIERCE AND GUN CLUB! RIP.

someone asked "Why can't they stick to IDM and leave the singing&Punk rock to bands?"
well, because!
because this is not your average punk band. it is people who have been through dance, DJing, AND bands, and decided to do something that mirrors their stance in 2005, instead of drowning in the IDM that starts to smell really rotten now.
i respect them for that.

Why can't they stick to IDM and leave the singing&Punk rock to bands? The production is the best, but unless you like a psuedo Nick Cave crooner going to town, then get the earlier stuff.
O, and the new Warp single just sucks; a real laugh for $.

Psychadelic For The Mentally Starved Fan.......2004-06-22

I must say this album is one of the finest records to come out of the Warp label in years. The live instrument sound on this album is superb. The psychadelic bass sound achieved is truly noteworthy. I felt nostalgic about all of my old Bauhaus records upon first listen. The synth sounds are never overused. The jangly guitars remind me of that post punk sound I've grown to love. Is that some fuzz guitar or what? The vocals remind me of Love & Rockets Ash (thats a damn good thing!!). I have been starved for something different ever since the saturation of software synths & plug-ins filled records. No 4 to the floor here. No laptronica either!! This album has not left my CD player in days. This album has a darker edge that makes it stand out in a crowd of imitators. Whatever they did in the studio has paid off. This album is making me smile. I'm glad I bought it. You should do the same. If Franz Ferdinand's album is too pop for you this will fill the void nicely. However, I love Franz Ferdinand. I love this album too.

Top league atmospherics with a rocking drive..........2004-06-05

Most of the really great albums i've heard this year have been from some rather "unlikely" candidates: Trans Am, Syntax, Ascii Disko, Saasfe, to name a mere few.
But this album from the Two Lone Swordsmen probably tops the lot simply because, musically speaking, it's heavily packed with cool ideas and great atmospheres.
To keep it short, this is a very inspired moment of genius. Particularly the mix of this album is intriguing: it reminds a lot of the alterbative rock scene of the 80s (especially the ultracool guitar and bass riffs) but the trick is actually at the beats which give the album a dark and ominous aura.

One telling track, "Sex beat", an irresistible cover version from the classic song from Gun in the 80s is characteristic in a way, but then again every single song on this LP doesn't fall below a certain level of quality. Quality? There is no filler material in "From the Double Gone Chapel", it's as simple as that.

The lyrics follow the lead as well, vying in bizzarity with the music.
This is not only a "safe buy" but an absolutely essential release for those interested in those undiscovered gems that every musical year keeps in store. One of the top albums of 2004.
