Dirty Dancing

Editorial Reviews

From URB Magazine
From the clean and pristine digital massage of "Make Up Your Mind," the cool lament of electro-love gone awry that opens Dirty Dancing, it's readily evident that Swayzak have come to play. Having already had a subtle but instrumental hand in the development of the sound currently being touted as "tech-house," James Taylor and David Brown have quietly (but ambitiously) developed into producers with real vision.

Dirty Dancing finds the duo flying back to the future, evidenced by songs like the monotone New Wave of "In the Car Crash" (hey — Gary Numan called and he wants his track back!). But it's that very punk rock-gone-underground-dance spirit that separates Swayzak's latest from the more rudimentary electro-art pack. "I Dance Alone" goes even deeper into the lonely trench-coat crowd of the late '80s, with Detroit godhead Adult.'s Nicola Kuperus laying down the law on the mic. Old-school goths will be crying beneath their capes for this baby. "The Punk Era" remembers the early days of Factory records and writing poetry to New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies. "Take My Hand" re-runs nostalgic reels of Depeche Mode when Vince Clarke was still in the band. But amid all of this looking back to move forward, new ideas are rapidly gestating.

Mining the classic tech-house (as derived from the Kraftwerk theorem) blueprint for the last track, "Ping Pong," Swayzak's undeniable might has the potential of being a vital bridge in the gap between the more cerebral dance floors, electro-clash hype and the seeds of a pop-culture paradigm shift. Imagine that.

If film and music fans sometimes wonder why soundtracks are often little more than pastiches of past pop hits and chart flavors of the moment, it's largely due to the blockbuster success of releases like this collection from 1987's surprise Patrcik Swayze/Jennifer Grey romantic hit. The film's retro-romantic concerns came shrewdly wrapped in a (largely manufactured) dance craze conceit tailor-made for such pop chestnuts as the Ronettes' "Be My Baby," the Zodiacs' "Stay," and the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Night." Mickey and Sylvia once again argued that "Love Is Strange"--if not quite as strained as Swayze's own attempt at balladry, "She's Like the Wind." Eric Carmen's "Hungry Eyes" showcased the former Raspberries leader to good effect, but the real soundtrack sweepstakes winner here was the Jennifer Warnes/Bill Medley duet "(I've Had) The Time of My Life." That performance not only won the Best Original Song Oscar the following year, but became one of the era's most performed songs and a ubiquitous radio staple. --Jerry McCulley

The Vestron film DIRTY DANCING is already twenty years old,in the aspect of production. August 14 marks the twentieth anniversary of its theatrical release. This CD features at least most of the material from the two soundtrack albums, including MORE DIRTY DANCING. The most memorable track,of course,is the Bill Medley/Jennifer Warnes duet (I'VE HAD THE)TIME OF MY LIFE. For more information, chack my review of the DIRTY DANCING soundtrack CD.

Album Description

Set against the decadent glamour and escalating danger of revolution-eve Cuba, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights re-imagines the 1987 film phenomenon from an exciting new perspective. Havana Nights tells a timeless story of a young woman's discovery of love, sensuality and independence - but with a sizzling style and rhythm all its own. In planning this new chapter in a beloved franchise, Artisan Entertainment and Miramax Films have put together a team of creative dynamos from the worlds of film, music and dance. Among them: maverick independent producer Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting); executive producer Sarah Green (Frida); Academy Award. winning screenwriter Ron Bass (Rain Man, My Best Friend's Wedding); director Guy Ferland; screenwriter Pamela Gray (A Walk on the Moon); choreographer Joanne Jansen; music industry legend Clive Davis, whose hot J Records imprint will release the soundtrack; acclaimed actor Diego Luna, a rising star following his performance in the sexy sensation Y Tu Mama Tambiin; and, in what promises to be a breakout role, gifted young actress Romola Garai (recently seen in Nicholas Nickleby). The resulting film is certain to give audiences - from newcomers to those who cherish the first Dirty Dancing - the time of their lives, and then some!

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Dancing - Havan Nights Soundtrack.......2007-04-07

Purchased for my daughter and myself after seeing the film. It is a lively mix of sultry, sensual salsa music which gets the feet moving and the singing and body going too! Exciting! Motivating! Fun! Not just for latin music lovers but for people who love life and enjoy being ALIVE!!!!!
Right up there with Otmar Liebert with Nouveau Flamenco and The Gypsy Kings to get the juices flowing and the body grooving to the music! We love it!

2 out of 5 stars not good.......2007-03-13

These songs are cheesy and not even close to good latin dance music

5 out of 5 stars Let the rhythm take you away.......2007-03-08

Was your foot tapping as your watched the movie? Even if you didn't like the film buy this CD and let the lating rhythm take you away.

5 out of 5 stars Havana Nights.......2007-02-08

I did not care for the movie Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights but the soundtrack is AMAZING. It has everything from slow dancing to fast step dancing type of music. I would tell anyone who loves Latin music that this soundtrack is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Very Impressive.......2007-01-27

I was very impressed with this CD. When I watched the Havana Nights, the thing that captivated me was the MUSIC. This soundtrack had all of the best songs from the movie in it! My favorites:

-Dance Like This
-Satellite (both versions)

But it is hard to pick favorites, because all the songs are good. If you found yourself wanting to get up and dance when you heard the music in this movie - DEFINITELY buy the soundtrack. It'll be a great addition to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars This completes the collection of this OST!.......2007-01-26

Now I finally have the second CD of this soundtrack! Even if I wasn't able to have the 2 cd album, this is more than enough. Anyway, the separate cds still contain the same number of songs. Nice to listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars What I was waiting for . . ........2005-02-18

I bought the first album expecting to hear all the great music and was very disappointed. When I then saw this one in the store, I was very excited because it had all the music that I was expecting to be on the first cd. I'm so glad they made this one too. I highly recommend buying this cd if you want to hear all of the great music from the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2004-12-10

Unless you're from Brain(less)tree, Mass.you'll probably like most of the tunes on this package, the ones with real feeling. For one who was there when these songs were originally popular, I can tell you they evoke real memories of the time. They catch the early 60s' mindset. Forty years after "Cry to Me", Solomon Burke was still recording and making appearances. Why they left this song out on the initial album is beyond me. It played as Johnny and Baby first made love, a significant turn in the movie. "Some Kind of Wonderful" (not to be confused with a song by Grank Funk Railroad of the same name) was popular a couple of years before the movie's timeframe. "Wipeout" was a new song that summer, liked by all the teens. "Do you Love Me?" was a recent hit and upon its use in the movie inspired the aging Contours to go on tour again. If they had included "Hey, Baby" from 1962 (with Texas bluesman Delbert McClinton on the background blues harp)and the song apparently written for the movie and done by Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers and Jennifer Warnes, the other songs could have been done away with. Don't let any negative review from an unhip, inhibited reviewer with a banned-in-Boston hangup influence you. This is one you'll want to have. Shortly after Baby and Johnny's summer, JFK was killed in Dallas, then came the Beatles and the end of an era.

5 out of 5 stars And to think they almost left these songs out.......2003-07-12

More Dirty Dancing released in early 1988 was the better release from the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack most of the good songs in the movie are on this soundtrack not original is good but how could they leave out these jewels. Everybody who loves this movie should have both albums.

5 out of 5 stars these needed to be added!.......2003-01-08

if these songs weren't added all together on another soundtrack, that would've been a travesty! the movie is full of great songs and it was crazy that these weren't on the first soundtrack... maybe they weren't expecting it to do so well. People who don't even like the movie so much seem to love the soundtrack anyway

5 out of 5 stars Better Than the Original.......2006-07-19

"Ultimate Dirty Dancing" is what the Dirty Dancing soundtrack should have ALWAYS been: ON A SINGLE CD!!! I had both the original soundtrack recording AND "More Dirty Dancing", but they were starting to show the effects of age and over-playing. The remastered soundtrack sounds just as amazing and enjoyable as it did when I first saw the film on its' opening day so many years ago. This is a perfect companion to the DVD and I recommend BOTH to anyone who loves the movie!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Dirty Dancing.......2006-03-18

I loved this movie the moment I first saw it and I loved the soundtrack even more. The great thing about this CD is it has every last song on it, from beginning to end. Including Kellermans anthem and the instermental part of "I've had the time of my life".

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Dirty Dancing: Ultimate to your Collection.......2006-01-18

I purchased this album in 2005, lost it in Hurricane Katrina, but I loved it so much that I want to buy it again. If you enjoyed Dirty Dancing and are a fan of what I like to call "new-age oldies" from the 60's and 70's, I encourage you to buy this collection. These are timeless classics you can dance and daydream to.. Your feet are gonna move and your mind is gonna flutter! This is essential to a collection of related genres. Generations to come are going to watch and love Dirty Dancing.. I don't think the film, or the music that gave it such heat, is ever going to sizzle out.

4 out of 5 stars Sony/BMG. Come on, it could be better........2006-01-04

O.k fine, better than the original CD from 1987. But why is not included the Dance Mix of the song 'Yes' by Merry Clayton ?, which is mixed by John 'Jellybean' Benitez and is extremely hard to find on CD. Sony/BMG Great Job Guys!!!...as usual something is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD-it's like watching the movie!!.......2005-08-19

This is the ONLY Dirty Dancing CD that has all the songs from the hit movie. An added bonus is they are sequenced in the order that they appear in the film. So if you are a big fan of the movie, just listening to the music you can remember each scene. In all there are 26 wonderful tracks. Great edition to any Dirty Dancing collection and a must have to go with the new Ultimate Edition DVD. The version I have is the 'Hyper CD' which has some extra features that are accessed with your computer's DVD player.

The Dirty Dancing Live in Concert CD delivers an exciting mix of pop and rock selections from the film of the same name. Singer-songwriter Eric Carmen is excellent in his presentation of Hungry Eyes, Make Me Lose Control and Almost Paradise. His live performance is stunning and his voice is top-notch. The other performers, including Merry Clayton and Bill Medley also do a fine job.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1998-11-26

Recorded Live at The Greek Theatre, this album is a hidden jewel. Merry Clayton (who sang backup on the Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter) is a dynamic singer and performer. The songs 'Overload' and "Steamroller Blues' are real, from the heart, rockers. Also included in this album is the song 'Cry to me', from the scene in the cabin when the two main characters first make love in the movie. All music is played by "The Contours", the original Dirty Dancin' band. Eric Carmen's 3 best songs ever, 'Make Me Lose Control', 'Almost Paradise', and 'Hungry Eyes' have that extra "live" excitement to them. This is a great album and a hidden jewel!!! Enjoy!!!

        4 out of 5 stars Minimal tech-electro-clash-house-stuff.......2003-03-26

Sometimes thing are hard to label, Swayzak is hard to label, it's not techno, it's certainly not house, it's not ambient, it's not electro it's whatever. It is however very minimal clear cut tech, with a hint of electro (80's) and even goth (track #3)

I have to be honest, I never was a big Swayzak fan but this album it just excellent, every track is a mini electro diamond. It's excellent stuff you want to play after you got home from a night out but still have an hour of energy left.

Go get it, this probably will be a classic

4 out of 5 stars Like a flashback into the future.........2002-11-27

In the European electronic/dance scene rediscovering the 80s is no longer news (you havent heard of "electroclash"? You should..)..
Swayzak tread older grounds in a very refreshing way in this album.."In the car crash" will revive the fondest memories of your 80's electrogoth days , and if you werent existent back then no worries, it will break you into a sound you'll find hard to resist.
This album is by no means a monotonous affair of retro-sounding synthies. It shifts with ease from innofensive techno to trip hop and thrusts back forward to tracks that pay hommage to Anne Clark.
Curiously enough for such an album there are no fillers. Instead, the whole thing is an honest effort to keep the music interesting and flowing. Swayzak are a proposition that will smoothly fit in an alternative club as well as a mainstream dance club. And that, i think, says it and sums it up all. Nice, very nice indeed.

4 out of 5 stars HEY PATRICK... MOVE TO THIS!!!.......2002-11-09

It's been two years since Swayzak gaves us Himawari and Dirty Dancing ( title taking from Patrick Swayze one hit movie Dirty Dancing and still continue in the mock of the actor, I will assume) comes as the big brother of any musical genre out there. Brave new musical steps are combined with classic Swayzak sounds to bring a combo of 80's style synths, electropop and minimal house. Tracks like... Make up your mind, In the car crash, I dance Alone & Half way to yesterday, bring a more friendly dance oriented feeling to the album and it's less cold and dark as the previous ones. I really enjoy it indeed!

4 out of 5 stars Strangely affecting electro-house..........2002-11-04

Great stuff from former minimalistic tech-house masters now dabbling in the nu-electro scene. Better than the last album, Swayzak really turns the heat up in a track in its last 2:00 or 3:00 minutes; so if your not satisfied with the first minute or so of the song: just wait, the surprises are coming. The tracks here cover many styles so the album never gets monotonous. Plenty of good guest performances, especially from the girl in Adult in "I Dance Alone". Progressive and original. Recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars flashback: 1982.......2002-10-26

even the title of swayzak's third full length offering is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the 80s. this time around swayzak has almost completely abandoned thier minimalistic tech-house grooves for an disc full of electro style songs . . . yes, songs. all but three tracks are vocal driven and 'dirty dancing' comes across as a full fledged electro-pop disc. now, as a person who was a teenager during the 80s new wave movement, the recent revival of 80s electro synth-pop (miss kittin & the hacker, adult, ladytron) is cute and kitschy yet somewhat tired all at the same time. but this is swayzak we're talking about and they breathe new life into the already tired genre of electro. although it's not immediately accessible as earlier works, diehard swayzak fans will still be able to dig deep and appreciate the tightly structured, deeply rhythmic tracks offered up here.

`make up your mind' opens the disc and starts off sounding like a typical swayzak vocal track: dreamy female vocals, deep dubby bass, synth effects and 4-on-the-floor beats. Then about a minute into the track it takes on a Heaven 17-ish spin and ends up sounding like an 80s new wave song. Even the lyrics ("You're going out with her tonight and that's not good."), about an open relationship gone bad, are 80s inspired.

'in the car crash' is Front 242 industrial from the driving (no pun intended) percussive beats to the processed Richard 23-ish vocals and morbidly twisted lyrics. it's kind of a love song gone bad. a guy dying in a car crash thinking only of his girlfriend.

'celcius', the first instrumental track, is a green album Orbital sound a-like. close your eyes and you'll be hard pressed to tell if it's Orbital or swayzak you're listening to.

'i dance alone' (my personal favorite) is more industrial strength dance music. yet its hyper-drive percussion and synthesizer reminds me of the darker 80s industrial artists like Borghesia or A Split Second.

'the punk era', the second instrumental track, starts off a bit cheesy until it veers off into pure late night trance with it's vocal refrain "get up" inspiring you to get up and dance.

'sob 1' is the only track that's close to past swayzak. a hauntingly beautiful deep house track until four minutes in it turns into industrial trance. then clair deitrich croons in french over the beats and i swear it veers off into stereolab territory. i kid you not!

'ping pong' is swayzak's kraftwerk tribute. steady 4/4 beats and kraftwerk-esque vocals saying "Ping . . . Pong". A wonderful close to a suprisingly wonderful disc.

although this is a radical departure in what swayzak fans have grown to know, love and expect from this talented duo 'dirty dancing', albeit a bit commercial, is swayzak in top form. A must have for swayzak or electro loving fans.
