Editorial Reviews
Jephté's solo career was launched in 1994, with the release of his first hit single "Onè Respè." His next hit single, "The Prayer (Priyè- a)," found its way into DJ rotations around the world, emerging from New York clubs like Body and Soul, "Little" Louie Vega's Dance Ritual, The Shelter and Brooklyn's Bang the Party as an instant underground success. This success was cemented with a stunning performance by Jephté Guillaume and the Tet Kale Orkestra at Body & Soul's Central Park Summerstage celebration in the summer of 1999. His critically acclaimed self-produced debut album "Voyage of Dreams" was released to universal praise and astonishment, following the international success of several 12" singles for Spiritual Life Music, which helped to establish the label as a global musical force to be reckoned with. And his work has already appeared on a host of compilations on labels such as Nuphonic, Island/Hannibal, React, JVC Japan, Wave (Body & Soul compilation Volume 1 & 2), Sony/Rhythmix France (Trip do Brasil I & II), Avex/Japan, Polygram/Motor, Chrysalis/EMI France, Virgin/France, Life Line/Japan and Flower/Japan.
The many releases of Jephté (including "Love Light" & "Rhythm of the Rain") are filled with substantial themes of struggle and liberation, but driven by the elements that make us dance: drum loaded tracks, and lots of live bass. Enticing keyboard melodies, seamless flute riffs, supernatural vocals, and the occasional flamenco-like guitar seem to emerge naturally from his festive rhythms. The result is a new sound - one that integrates a revolutionary Haitian spirit with an electronic groove for the technologically astute.
Jephté has spent the last few years on the club circuit, making his mark on the electronica movement. A sought-after bassist and multi-instrumentalist who has played with a wide range of major artists from R&B (Groove Theory),nu-soul (Mary J. Blige), Hip-Hop (Refugee All-Stars Band, Slick Rick), Acid Jazz (Abstract Truth), Pop (98 degrees, No Mercy, Sting & Jermaine Jackson), Haitian Raggamuffin (Papa Jube), French Reggae (Tonton David), French Hip-Hop Reggae (Real Kila), and Gospel (Timothy Wright, The Daughtry Singers of the House of the Lord from Brooklyn), he is obviously serious when he says, "Wherever there is music, I am there."
Born in Haiti, but uprooted to Brooklyn with his family during the Duvalier regime, Jephté Guillaume is a unique addition to the trajectory of Haitian musicians such as Boukman Eksperyans, whose music transforms Vodun spirituality and African ancestry into something universally understood. "Everywhere go, people ask me about the spirituality in my music - they may not know Kreyol, but they sing along." True to his roots, Jephte's lyrics come from Haitian folk and devotional chants, offering praise to the ancestors and calling for the listeners to get up and connect to their spiritual homes. Like Nigeria's Fela Kuti and Cameroon's Manu Dibango did in their ways for their cultures, Jephté Guillaume does for his by building a bridge between American Soul, Jazz, and music traditions that come directly from the Haitian experience. "The Haitian drums are everywhere, just like the Spirits themselves," he says. It is these Spirits who pervade the Tet Kale sound.
The infectious mixture of diverse elements in Jephté Guillaume's music comes as no surprise, when one looks at his eclectic career. He is known within the Haitian community as a former founding member of the renowned roots-rock band Rara Machine, which toured worldwide. While in the U.S., he has developed a committed international dance audience, released his own vibrant recordings as well as produced successful remixes for a diverse collection of artists including Amel Larrieux, Clara Moreno, Pushim, Toni Braxton, Wild Magnolias, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Calyn and Glen Scott.
Product Description
"Voyage Of Dreams", produced by Jephté Guillaume, provides a delicate balance between modern rhythms & expressions with the traditional ancestral elements of Jephté's Afro-Hatian-Latin heritage. A musical ambassador for the spiritual messages of both the Haitian revolution-reconstruction & the New York diaspora of today, Jephté embodies in his music the body & soul of Haiti - his songs, all sung in Haitian Kreyol, often take the form of incantations to a superior being (The Prayer) & renew the ancient beliefs of Vodou. This album is a concept album in its theme & structure, awashed in images of displacement, travel & the search for unity and spiritual fufillment. Jephté's songs offer prayers, ask for spiritual guidance from the elders, challenge the madness of oppression & misery, and offer the hope embodied in images of home, family, country & liberation. But anchoring almost all of this is the persistant beat - the groove - to inspire dance. The most powerful influence of Vodou on Jephté's music is the realization that the most profound questions & the most soul-wrenching quests need not be divorced from the joy of dancing. In a world where almost everyone seems to be in motion, where everyone seems to be a migrant or a traveller, and where families are seperated by oceans, Jephté's quest may just be our own....

Legendary soprano Rosa Ponselle recalled these sessions taped by RCA in her Baltimore home as the only time she enjoyed making records. Fourteen years after her abrupt retirement from opera, her voluptuous instrument (ruby red in the '39 Victors and now tinged with purple) soars to better advantage in the amplitude of her spacious music room than within the cramped confines of the recording studio. Whether in Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Mozart, or Tosti songs, or chestnuts like "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes," the vocalism is always informed by Ponselle's musical intelligence and sense of style. Romophone brings together all the material from these home sessions, including 75 minutes of music not issued by RCA, plus a promotional interview that reveals a warm, down-to-earth persona quite different from your typical diva stereotype. Ponselle fans need no encouragement to acquire this set. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Revealing.......2004-12-28
What we do experience, and mostly because we have no arias from her great roles to listen to, is the Ponselle way with a song. She just seemed to embrace a song and make it her own. Her interpretation may be enjoyable to you, you may find other singers you like better, but her interpretation is NEVER common and without validity. Each piece is truly her own stamped completely with her emotional and vocal understanding of the text and the music.
That brings me to the diction part of the recording. Her RRRRRR (rolled R, or tongue trill by some) is very pronounced and now days may be seen as tasteless. However, it was the way things were sung then, and not just in Italian (even English actors rolled their R's beyond belief at that time). Personally, the well pronouced rolled R has never bothered me whatever, and in a way, I expect to hear it when singers are singing opera. It is so played down now days, one is sometimes completely unaware an R was even said. Ponselle's diction is incredible, and I don't just say that. Each and every word is completely understandable, even in English (which is crystle clear). It seems that was a common trait back in her day, for in many recordings of that time and earlier that I have the singers are exceptionally clear with their diction (even the Met manager, former singer, Edward Johnson is so clear while singing English -- a collection of Canadian songs -- one is stunned that the poor recordings quality didn't just eat up the words). Perhaps such singers as Renee Flemming and all the other greats of today should play some Ponselle recordings and learn what diction is all about.
These recordings, though made long after her retirement, are still a great testiment as to what she was like as a singer, for they give us all the greatness that was hers. It makes people like me, who were born after she retired (though quite a while before she died, as I remember her well on live from the met broadcasts on the radio Saturday afternoons) wish we could go back in time and hear some real singing.
In addition to the music, we have some interviews with Ruby Mercer, which are a real delight to listen to. No wonder people like Sills have nothing but great memories working with Ponselle. She is truly well grounded. She knows her contribution to the world of music for exactly what it is. There is no false modesty, nor is there any "high mindedness about self." We have a very down to earth person talking about things, even why she chose some of the music she did, in a very down to earth way.
I recommend the set to anyone who loves to hear great singing, even if it would have more appeal to collectors than average people. It is well recorded, and the sound is excellent. It is a treasure to have on any record shelf.

An EMI house conductor with a devoted cult following.......2005-11-22
In fact, I would rate this set as one of the poorer compilations in the whole series. The big works here are a live Tchaikovsky Fifth with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra (stereo, 1967) and a less well recorded Brahms Fourth with the Czech Phil. (stereo, 1965). Neither strikes me as anything but ordinary, or worth salvaging, really, despite their honest, sober ways. Neither orchestra sounds at its best. Nor are the minor works, such as a cautious Benevenuto Cellini Over. and a decent enough Mendelssohn Calm Sea and Happy Voyage Over., anything notable.
The happiest item is the Capriccio Italien that wraps up CD 2, a 1958 studio recording with the Philharmonia. It is fresh and lively, without a trace of bombast or fakery. I liked it better than anything else here, but one bright performance can't save the dullness of the rest. Overall, this is a perfect set to keep around in case somebody claims that Kletzki was great just becasue his records are out of print.
Great Conductors of 20th Century= Best Reissues of the 21st.......2003-03-29
This particular CD, Volume 20, features the great Paul Kletzki, a conductor who is woefully underrepresented on CD at the present time. (His wonderful recordings of Sibelius, Prokofiev, Beethoven, and others are currently unavailable -- in fact the only decent recordings of his that are in print is the Chopin Piano Concerto with Pollini, and only a couple of Mahler discs!) As the track information is not abundantly clear above, allow me to mention that these two discs feature memorable stereo performances of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony and Capriccio Italien, Brahms' 4th Symphony, 3 of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, an excerpt from Schubert's ballet "Rosamunde," and a Wagner song. There are also two mono performances from the early 50s --Berlioz's "Benvenuto Cellini" Overture and Mendelssohn's "Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage" Overture. Kletzki, who was probably best associated with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic, also performs here with Bavarian RSO, Royal Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, and Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Francaise.
Whether you are a serious collector of classical music or a beginner, the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" has something for everyone. If the prized, rare performances previously unreleased on CD (or ever!) doesn't excite you, then use this as an opportunity to check out one of the greatest conductors ever recorded. Chances are, since stores are offering increasingly homogenized classical music sections, this conductor isn't even in your collection. And that would truly be a shame.

Voodoo House Rules!.......2001-04-10
Jephte was instrumental in establishing both Spiritual Life Music (the label owned by DJ/Producer/Remixer Joaquin "Joe" Claussell), as well as the "Body & Soul" sound, a deep mix of worldbeat, Garage, disco, House, Jazz and Soul which has become identified with the New York Sunday evening party of the same name. Jephte's performance with the Tet Kale Orkestra at 1999's Body & Soul party in Central Park was one of the musical highlights of the summer.
This album represents the best of deep house and world-influenced dance music over the past 5 years. Already hailed as a classic the world over. Don't sleep!
Jephte continues the vibe with the upcoming release of material on his new label, Tet Kale Records, and the (world) beat goes on!
