A band that bleeds hipster chic, feeding funky arrangements through a labyrinth of almost irritatingly cool samples, Pepe Deluxe are nothing if not the epitome of contemporary (or is that temporary?) fashion. Like fellow cool cats Dimitri from Paris and especially the Dutch duo Arling and Cameron, this band revels in the irony of pop culture and a glib embrace of retro-sounding grooves. Unlike those artists, however, Pepe Deluxe have a tendency to let their imaginations prevent them from focusing on cohesive music and instead favor the trendy pastiche. Still, the three band members do have an adventurous ear for these kinds of dance floor mish-mashes, mixing flashes of scratch and gut-bucket beats with a compelling cornucopia of whacked-out sound effects. Some songs work this formula to satisfying conclusions, like when the slow-burning "Beat Experience" spreads a fat, lush synthesizer over an acoustic piano track and a hypnotic spoken-word ramble. Other songs require a bit more patience; the endlessly loopy feel of songs like "Tour de Force" can inspire virulent flashes of irritation. Still, the overall experience, despite the self-conscious nature of Pepe's sound, is an interesting one and it can be intensely enjoyable (in small doses, anyway). --Matthew Cooke

This volume of Amazing Grace is a fairly good cd, but if you are looking for more then I would recommend Volume 1 or Volume 3 over Volume 2.

Classic - Hold the Chills.......2006-06-25

This is a fine collection of mostly classical themes.
Some of them have nice creepy moments, but on the whole, it's just some solid music. Not something to buy if you want really "spooky" music, but worthwhile for some interesting listening.

Packed with creepy stuff.......2000-12-16

This is an awesome album. It starts off with thunder crashing, running footsteps, a gate creaking, the wind howling, a cat screeching, a door opening, a woman crying that she needs help....and then SCREAMING! And then straight into track 2, the overture to 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Wow! The rest of the cd also features 'creepy' music from various sources, such as Alfred Hitchcock films, like Psycho, various classic works like Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Night on Bald Mountain', and also some other creepy sound effects. A good album not only for Halloween but I dare you to listen to it during a dark night with a thunderstorm raging outside.

A real work-out for your system.............1999-12-11

I've owned the "Chiller" CD since it's release in '89. At the time, I was working for a local Audio/Video/Music dealer, and was looking for 'demo' CD's containing not necessarily heavy bass, but ones displaying incredible dynamic range, and sharp transient peaks. I already owned a copy of "Time Warp", also on Telarc, and was intrigued when I read about "Chiller. Needless to say, I was extremely pleased with this disc. Not only did I get a disc containing some great treatments of classics, but the re-make of the "Psycho" suite is wonderful (the shower sequence is very faithful to the original)! A word of warning.....the dynamic range of this disc is not to be underestimated.....I drove an older amplifier into thermal shutdown VERY quickly with track #1. I haven't tried it since I've upgraded my home system....hmmm....might have to scare the neighbors tonight (or at least rattle a few dental fillings)!

This CD contains tons of great classic Halloween tunes. Even though the names might sound unfamiliar, you probably know most of the music on here through cultural osmosis. Heck, it's worth it just for "Funeral March of a Marionette" (the Alfred Hitchcock show theme.)

I grew up watching him playing the SnowMan in "smokey and the bandit" and the songs of that movie grew on me so much i love them to this very day!

Unfortunalty only one from that movie appears on this album "East bound and down" but from that i took a gamble on seeing if any of his other work outside of that movie was any good, and i was pleased with the result!

These songs are great, if your into this sound and brand, then this sure is a great album to have! just too bad it didnt contain the songs from "smokey and the bandit"

but still the only country and western muso i like!

Jerry Reed's a comic, but don't ever forget he is a fine guitarist first and foremost. Not just funny lyrics here. Lots of great licks to enjoy, too.

More than just "East Bound and Down".......2001-11-06

Jerry Reed, known to many as the hillbilly in the semi in "Smokey and the Bandit", had a pile of forgotten hits, which are masterfully laid out on this album. "East Bound..." is great, and "She Got the Goldmine" is a classic, but check out "Amos Moses", about an amputee beating up alligators, or "The Bird" (somebody get me a BB gun!). Laugh your butt off, and just for giggles, notice how many songs contain the phrase "contempt of court"..... "Super Hits" series are generally awfully good compilations, and I also recommend those by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Geroge Jones. Moo.

Count me among those mentioned in an earlier post that are just discovering Jerry Reed. Not that I have't seen him before, mind you. I knew him from the Smokey and the Bandit movies, and purchased this cd because of the song, "East Bound and Down." Let me say, "Wow". This guy's work is amazing, and I DEFINITELY will be buying more of his stuff in the future. The song's are comedic, full of beat and talent, and downright hard to beat. The man can fly on a guitar, and his vocals put you in the mood of the song. Get this one as soon as you can. You won't be sorry.

An infernite for Inferno.......2004-07-06

My opinion of this album may be biased, as I -am- a member their cult, an infernite to be precise. This was the first album I owned of World/Inferno and listened to it non-stop for over a month (when I got "Just the best party"). After seeing them for the first time in Cambridge MA I fell in love with the 'cabarete punk' sound. The nine piece band flows beautifully together. The sound ranges from the angstful "Tatoos Fade" to the bouncingly fun "Ich Errinere Mich an Weimar". I strongly recommend Just the Best Party, as it's just the best album, as well as their live album creatively entitled "Live at Northsix". Though nothing compares to their lives shows. Clowns Must Stand.

The east coast "Super Punk Sound".......2004-04-26

A combination of punk, pop, bouncing beats and Latin music are at the heart of the World/Inferno Friendship Society's "East Coast Super Sound Punk of Today." Try saying all that five times fast. But despite the odd title, this is a relentlessly fun and engaging album -- part salsa, part ska, part rock, part pop.

Fast-strumming electric guitars open the catchy "Tattoos Fade," and yowling-rock "The Models And The Mannequins." Other highlights include the shimmying "Glamour Ghouls," the shout-and-percussion-filled "Our Candidate," and the salsa-drenched "Jeffrey Lee." Residents of California, however, may be a bit put off by "All Of California And Everyone Who Lives There Stinks," but just get past the title.

Dark humor and sly fun are mixed in equal parts here -- just when you think one is going to kick in, the other jumps in your way. It's kind of anarchic, but in a good, fun way, like a formal brass band that has decided to dirty-dance in the streets. It has a sinister carnival sound -- menacing, but with a big grin.

The instrumentation is a beautiful thing. The guitar work can become a bit repetitive (didn't I hear that riff earlier on the album?), but the spirit is original from one song to the next. Pounding pianos, horns, organs, and caffeine-kick percussion. The carnival sound comes across in the lyrics, and they only just dodge being cheesy. Instead, they're cheesy in a fun way. ("Our youth like wax drips down/in puddles around our legs")

The carnival mentality elevates "East Coast Super Sound Punk of Today"'s mishmash of influences, from gospel to ska. It's fun, it's strange, it's catchy, it's stark raving mad, it's brilliant and it's recommended.

the secret is out.......2003-09-28

World/Inferno has been around for some time, and I'm glad that their fame is catching up. I'm not part of their cult, which is a really interesting thing to see, but I really do enjoy seeing them. I think they're an amazing band, and this is an excellent cd. No matter what type of music you listen to, this band will grasp your attention.

Play this cd in your friend's basement at a party and dance drunkenly (or sober) and it is the time of your life. If you love this cd, you will love World Inferno live (and vice versa). It's full of energy, it's amazing.

This could be background music the to any movie, television series or commercial from the 50's and early 60's. It grows on you. A "Baby Boomer's" delight.

Finally, a stateside reissue of the seminal cocktail culture composer Bob Thompson's landmark lounge album, The Sound of Speed, has been released on CD courtesy of those pop culture archeologists at Dionysus, and the tireless efforts of Thompson's son, Spenser. The brilliant Thompson, a contemporary of such celebrated and better known RCA mood music magicians like Juan Garcia Esquivel and Henry Mancini, is long overdue for popular and critical re-discovery, and this crucially cool LP is a perfect launching pad for this revival.

Recorded in Rome in 1960, The Sound of Speed may seem relatively syrupy in our current culture of hyper-frenetic bass beats and pulse-pounding urban rhythms, but this music hails from a totally different context and era: The Space Age, when rest and relaxation were as much a part of our perceived future as electronically enhanced convenience. While Bob Thompson was at the peak of his powers, a lifestyle of luxury was promised for all, from the stay-at-home mom to the working stiff to the corporate climber. The soothing, stirring orchestration on this collection conveys both inspiration and intoxication. Each track is devoted to a different mode of transportation, most incorporating (or "sampling") the actual mechanical sounds of the object in musical question.

The soaring rhapsody of "Star Fire" (Jet Plane) and the bouncy lushness of "Early-Bird Whirly-Bird" (Helicopter) have been heard before on lounge compilations, but the rest of the dozen tunes here will be beautiful new music to the lucky listener's ears. From the continental coolness of "La Vespa" (Motor Scooter) to the dreamy drama of "Sub-Manhattan Blues" (Subway Train) to the aquatic aural atmosphere of "Sea-Spray" (Speed Boats) to the cosmic blast of "Count Down" (Missile), Bob Thompson will take you for one wild, wondrous ride. The destination for each traveler is the same: the sanctuary of your own sonically soused soul.

Along with the original cover and liner notes, the CD package also includes excerpts from an interview yours truly did with Bob for the Fall 2002 issue of ATOMIC Magazine, in which he humbly acknowledges the resurgence of interest in his music with bemused appreciation. Here's to you, Mr. Thompson: cheers, and thanks for the bright, shiny, brand new musical memories. The 21st Century welcomes you!
