    5 out of 5 stars Hot..........2007-04-15

Hot is not only a word that I use to personally describe one of my favorite artists-Jesse Johnson, but it is also a word I use to describe his sophomore effort Shockadelica (a title he came up with-NOT Prince, as was and probably still is believed). Mr. Johnson proves himself as a producer, song writer, arranger, musician, etc. on this album-even more so than on his first release. Even with this album, there was still the comparisions between he and Prince. And while some songs, in particular, "Addicttion" and "Burn You Up" sound like songs Prince would have composed, the vast majority of the album tends to veer away from this similarity. The song "Crazay" is an homage to old school funk-so it is very fitting that the legendary Sly Stone makes an appearance on this single. The song "A Better Way" is a blues-tinged track that showcases not only Mr. Johnson's guitar skills, but also his songwriting ability. It also gives a glimpse of the type of composition that would appear on his "Bare My Naked Soul"(1996)album. The acoustic "Black In America" is a well written reflection of the black experience in America. Other highlights include the hypnotic "Tonite", the danceable "She (I Can't Resist)", the reworked Pepe Willie song, "Do Yourself A Favor", "Baby Let's Kiss" and "Change Your Mind".

I believe with Shockadelica, Mr. Johnson was beginning his evolution as an artist. An evolution that would come to fruition on his 1996 "Bare My Naked Soul" release.

5 out of 5 stars His best solo album, psychedelic, blusey pop........2004-06-03

This is where Jesse found his sound between the plantive folk of "Black in America" to the slow blues numbers to the collaboration with Sly Stone on "Craazy" to the black pop of"Do Yourself a Favor" Johnson found his sound and his best songwriting and guitar playing album. Prince would do him one better with the groundbreaking "Sign O the Times" released 6 months later (Jesse's album came out in october 86)but put these albums together and what you see is a commitment to Black Music 's greatest traditions Musicianship and craft.

4 out of 5 stars More Like Princadelica.......2002-08-17

It took a while for Jesse to find himself. After leaving The Time, he released the synth driven "Jesse Johnson's Revue" and followed it up with this second Prince sound-a-like set. (Prince liked the title of this album so much he delivered a classic song using the same title). But Jesse's true calling and musical background came from Chicago Blues and Stax style R & B. It wasn't until his hard to find third album, "Every Shade of Love", that his musical greatness became truly evident. In my estimation "Shockadelica" can be viewed as a transitional album from the typical Minneapolis Sound Johnson performed with The Time to his own voice/guitar-based style. You can hear percursors of that sound here in A Better Way where Jesse "stands up and testifies" with his guitar. Further highlights include the welcome return of 60's & 70's icon Sly Stone on the duet Crazay. Baby Let's Kiss is a funk work out anthem and the acoustic Black In America demonstrates that Jesse has more going on than just a pink fashion sense. However, She(featuring gritty guitar work) and Burn You Up are basically the same song and the album would have been stronger with only one. Alernative extended versions of some of the songs on "Shockadelica" can be found on the Highly Recommended Jesse Johnson Ultimate Collection, where Johnson's guitar pyrotechnics really explode.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Azz Wine, But The CD Kept Skipping on Time.......2002-01-18

Jesse Johnson is the man, and I would like to hear his voice if the CD would stop skipping, of course that is how I got it, person said it was like new, but I should have known, without a cover, it was not like new. Anything that says "like new", and the price is under $7.00, they are lying.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Duff track to be found.......2000-09-05

Like most people that reviewed this CD, I first heard it during the "Purle Reign" of prince in the Mideighties. Even then, Prince was releasing Albums that were 50% genius and 50% trash. Then along came Jessie with Shockadelica. Its one of those rare albums which contains no fillers, every track being a classic. The only problem ( and its not really a problem for me ) is that the production does now sound a little dated, and it does sound a little too princey. Having said that, if prince had released this album in his hayday, it would have probably outsold Purple Rain ( Not really, but I'm exaggerating to make a point!! ) Go and buy it NOW!
