Elements of Life

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Famous for his many contributions to the global dance community both as a solo artist and as one half of legendary duo Masters at Work, Louie Vega's newest full-length piece is further evidence of his boundary-breaking musical genius. Exploring, dissecting and fusing musical genres like Bossanova/Samba, African Jazz, Salsa and Soca, and languages like English, Spanish, Cape Verdian, Yoruban and French, Elements of Life creates a gorgeous musical collage.

Elements of Life's uplifting message is most notable on the single, "Brand New Day" - created with pioneering underground music duo Blaze (Kevin Hedge and Josh Milan). The featured artists on the album are seasoned singer/songwriter/guitarist Raúl Midón and rising superstar, Anané. . On this album, Anané expresses herself in her native Cape Verdian language, English, and French on bossa-flavored cuts "Nos Vida (Our Life)" and "Ma Mi Mama (With My Mommy)", as well as in the sexy spoken word collaboration with Dimitri From Paris on "Mon Amour (My Love)." and Ursula Rucker on "Journey’s Prelude".

Tiësto sticks to his guns on a new album of original compositions that follows 2004's Just Be. Elements of Life strikes a satisfying balance between inventive vocal tracks and signature trance stormers: "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," "Driving to Heaven," and "Bright Morning Star" all glow with the Dutchman's epic sound, one that is simultaneously haunting and uplifting. On the vocal side, the soaring energy of "Break My Fall," which features BT on vocals, will not disappoint fans of the duo's prior work on "Just Be" and other collaborations. To be sure, there are a number of less convincing pieces as well: "Dance4Life" with Faithless's Maxi Jazz falls flat, and the lyrics of "Can You Feel Me" prove that the genre's reputation for banal wordsmithing is not entirely undeserved. For the most part, however, these weaker moments are outweighed by the stronger tracks. Principal among these is undoubtedly "Sweet Things"--in which Charlotte Martin's vocal high-wire act is complemented by some exceptional programming--a track that is sure to receive a great many spins by DJs around the globe and yet further proof that when it comes to bringing alive the female voice for the dancefloor, Tiësto remains without equal. All in all, it's a safe bet that many of Tiësto's Elements will be making their way into DJ crates and MP3 players alike. --Brent Kallmer

5 out of 5 stars This is what I call Trance! .......2007-07-29

Dont listen to the bad reviews, theyre not right. Elements of Life is a wonderful record, full of energy, high beats, electro sounds and very beautiful vocals. The singles DANCE4LIFE, IN THE DARK & BREAK MY FALL are amazing. The remixes to those singles are incredible as well. the vocals on BREAK MY FALL are BTs, same guy who sang on LOVE COMES AGAIN. The vocal tracks SWEET THINGS & EVERYTHING are great tracks as well. TEN SECONDS BEFORE SUNRISE is a great starter to the the album and CARPE NOCTUM is TRAFFIC part 2. ELEMENTS OF LIFE is a great track to finish off the album as well. When I first downloaded this album I thought it wasnt as good as past Tiesto records but when I decided to give it a chance and actually started to listen to the whole album I loved it and ran to my local record store and bought it right away. Now its part of my work out, its always on my ipod and always in my car. Totally love it, go for it and enjoy! Cant wait to see Tiesto live with his Elements of Life tour!

We rated this album.... as part of a camp project at St. Ives Camp near New York City. We did a poll to choose everyone's favorite album of the summer.... and the winner .... is an album called + EURO CLUB HITS VOL. 1 + which is downloadable from iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, etc...... (it's not on Amazon yet)......it was a close race between many albums.... everyone in the camp (200+ kids!) is now going to vote again on Amazon & iTunes... and please add your vote also!! Thanks!

TIESTO, THE IDIOT, THE FOOL, THE ONE WHO POISONS THE NAME OF TRANCE. I FEEL SORRY FOR HIM FOR SUCKING SO MUCH. WHY CAN'T HE JUST DIE IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT OR GET CANCER- THAT WAY ATLEAST WE WOULD NOT HEAR FROM HIM AGAIN. HE SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR GIVING TRANCE AN UNDESERVED REPUTATION. if you want some fine music buy asot 2006, DEEP TRANCE by water music records or george acosta "lost world" their are many more but there are three good cd's right there.

2 out of 5 stars old tiesto.......2007-07-18

I am kinda disappointed in this cd I like the old tiesto way better than this stuff. Hopefully his next cd rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Tiësto is Tiësto.......2007-07-11

After Just Be, I didn't have too high expectations of this album, even though I did like Just Be. This album doesn't have slow tracks, the vocal performances are just great. All songs fit his style and a couple of them may remind you his first hits.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT .......2007-01-18

A must-buy - it's a perfect balanced mix of electronica and house. A few cuts blend Midon's vocals perfectly. Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars GENIUS AT WORK...!.......2005-08-10

A rich mix of his unbeatable garage songs, South American enriched house and real latin flavours, it collects previous 12" only classics such as "Brand New Day" and the title track, much of Louie's Vega Records output and loads of new music. The album features an unrivaled group of friends, from New Jersey garage supremos Blaze, singer / guitarist Raul Midon and Louie's wife Anane plus a host of players.
Another great and beautiful record, if you feel connected with Latin House music, there is a perfect example here, Elements of Life, keeps the dancefloor in mind, but moves far beyond it. He created with a nine-piece band and vocalists, including Ursula Rucker, Anane, Blaze with his fantastic "Elements of Life" in original 12" extended version, Jose Luis Pardo from "Los Amigos Invisibles" (Caracas FOREVER!!!), Raul Midon and salsa sensation Domingo Quinones (who sings a tribute to Vega's late uncle, former salsa star Hector Lavoe). The song Elements of Life was created years ago and then he created a whole album out of that sound. This album is a little deeper, that reflects more spiritualism, unifying cultures and basically celebrates life. Precious, really wonderful.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesomely superb!.......2004-11-13

This one on the best mixed CD's incorporating a buffet of musicial ecstacies. Louie, you have out done yourself once again. Very proud to play this cd for all my non-house-head friends. They have no choice but to embrace the universal soul and spirit of this music. Always a New Yorker in the House!!

3 out of 5 stars 'Elements' lacks Fire.......2004-07-22

As a longtime Louie fan, I keep wanting to give this CD the benefit of a doubt but finally parted ways with it much like an old girlfriend you keep trying to come back to. For anyone interested, it lies along the I-4 corridor along the outskirts of Orlando. Amidst all the hype, I was filled with anticipation about this new product that Louie was about to deliver and the ethereal title, "Elements of Life" added to the excitement. I
had been hearing Brand New Day & Elements of Life on cable radio and although not taken aback by either of the two, thought that the album was sure to be filled with gems the likes of which we hadn't heard since River Ocean, the Bounce or Nuyorican Soul. Unfortunately, that was not to be the case. In a nutshell, as with most of the House music out there, these tracks lack balls w/the exception of the Salsa based Quimbombo & 2 tribal chants Sunshine and Canto a Chango. The single Elements of Life along with the other silly Brazilian influenced pieces are 5-10 years late and his "muse", aka new wife is definitely no India.

Where is the rawness, verve, attitude that dominated MAW? Is this what happens when house artists begin their crossover trek? A peer of mine stated House was not meant for the masses, it was our thing. Once that 'our thing' was lost, so was the soul of House. Another dispels that notion and says that the true element missing from this CD is Kenny D. Nevertheless, @$10-15 I say less hype and more "Voice Inside of Me"!

For those wanting to join my despair, if you see any glitter in the road it's not gold but rather the abandonment of mediocre House CD's... such is life - Peace.

5 out of 5 stars The Blessed One..........2004-04-12

Mr. Vega is INCREDIBLE! A GENIUS, The Miles Davis of Dance Music, and an AMAZING DJ/Producer...He and his other half Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez have created some of the classiest, sophisticated and stylish music that could only come from New York. Some of the people he has worked with include: Luther Vandross, Kenny Lattimore, Stephanie Mills, India, George Benson, Dave Valentin, Roy Ayers, Jocelyn Brown, Pattie Austin, James Ingram, BeBe Winans, and so on and on...Let me tell you right now that if your collection does not also include.."Nuyorican Soul - CD", "Masters at Work - 10th Anniversary - Part 1 - 1990-1995 -CD"& "Masters at Work - 10th Anniversary - Part 2- 1996-2000 CD" then I must tell you right now that your collection is missing something really, really special. Peace...Virgil

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs ever.......2005-05-19

This is hot stuff. On my top ten list ever since it came out. The 5 elements (alas without David Gilmore) in splendid form. And David Murray gives it just the little extra. One of the best versions of "Round Midnight" ever recorded. Dense, intense, and plenty of groove.

    4 out of 5 stars blown away!.......2000-07-16

well what can i say, this CD is just... everything Coleman mixes is here his free form jazz-funk with his hiphop background, for our pleasure. particularly enjoyable on the 5th and 6th track, a definite getit album!

3 out of 5 stars better after repeated listenings.......2000-05-06

I didn't care for this cd at first, particuliarly the funk tinged bass and the final track, a mixing of rap and jazz which I found quite disappointing. However upon further listeing there is some interesting horn work going on here and much of the music is improvised. Also the guest appearance by David Murray is a definite plus. Overall, worth a listen.

    3 out of 5 stars worth a listen.......2000-04-28

Hated this when I first heard it, primarily because the funky bass lines don't appeal to me. However upon subsequent listenings there is some interesting horn work going on here and David Murrays guest appearance is a definite plus. The band seems at ease and carefree improvising with integrity. Low point of album is the destable "Im Burnin UP(Fire Theme)" which is a hideous amalgamation of rap and jazz two generes that in my mind don't mix and should never mix. Overall worth a listen.

    5 out of 5 stars Unflippingbelievable!.......2000-02-06

The mixed-meter final cut, with David Murray blowing the end off his horn and amazing rappers, is worth a million. Some of the best outside playing since the Sixties, but with uncanny discipline and energy. Drop what you're doing and buy a copy right now. You'll thank me!

5 out of 5 stars Ecclectic and Serene.......2002-09-17

John Gentry Tennyson is my half-brother, and just the most talented jazz pianist to hit the US in a decade. He takes his music directly to heart, and expresses his feelings and emotions thru every note. Sometimes I feel and think he is too serious, but his complexity and depth to his music gives credence to his love for his music.
I wish him well, love him very much as my brother, and hope everyone will look forward to an upcoming 3rd CD from him soon.
Since he travels all over the US and Europe, it's very rare that we get to meet up in the same city, but he will always be my little brother, and the sweetest guy in the World.

listening to this CD, I am transported from my living room or car, to some small town in Sicily, walking down cobblestone streets. It evokes emotions from all extremes and takes you on a different journey from one track to the next. Where did this artist come from. He is amazing.

I gess their is not mush point saying how good this album is, as it is so old and who would want a copy now, if they can even find one, plus who is e o l anyway.

        4 out of 5 stars It's alright.....standard, average R&B.......2004-09-18

Elements of Life came at a time when the R&B market was flooded with R&B groups, so of course they didn't get as much attention as I thought they should have. But, I figured that when I saw their video for "Sweet Love" that I had to get the album.

The album is actually pretty good. It's not totally exceptional, but it actually has its ups and downs. The aforementioned "Sweet Love" is a very good remake of the classic Anita Baker. Not too many people can remake a song and have it sound good, but EOL did that and put their own little spin on it and didn't make it a copy. I was surprised by how good they sounded.

There are a few songs that will get your head bopping. "Love the Way" has a tight beat with a guest rap from fairly-unknown Shelene. But, it's still enjoyable and listenable. "All I Need Is Your Love" is self-explanatory, but it's definitely a good song.

Some of the slower songs fare well here. "Gift of Love" is by far my favorite song on the album, with some nice, strong leads, and nice harmonies. Also worth mentioning is "I Fall So Deep" with its lush harmonies and "Not Afraid to Love", with its powerful delivery, soothing lyrics, and beautiful production. Also, "On My Mind" is a lovely interlude, though I wish it was a full song. And "Boulevard" is a nice acappella song with some serious harmony reminiscent of the old doo-wop groups of the 50s and 60s.

I think that I don't like this album too much is that it's a bit too ballad-heavy, and they mostly sound like something we have heard before. The production on some of the ballads are less than stellar, and it takes away from the guys' vocals, which seem to always be on point. I think that someone thought the album would succeed purely on the guys' voices, and although it mostly worked for Boyz II Men, it doesn't necessarily work for someone relatively unknown.

I would have loved for EOL to release another album so that I can see what they are all about and if they could make it through the sophomore jinx....but, of course, RCA folded and who knows where these brothers are. Hopefully, they can get another album out and actually promote themselves fully. They have the voices to really be something!!

I didnt realize other folks had heard of EOL. I remember hearing a song or two of theirs. I went and got the CD and a few days after that.

Seriously its not something to sleep on "Freaky Tonight". I love that one. Also "Make Sure Your Right" is nice as well. we all know about "Sweet Love". But EOL handles it well regardless.

I wish they'd do another album. But as it stands. I'm glad i bought this when i did.

        EOL for life!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Elements Of Life.....Essential!!!.......2001-12-05

This is a group that I had never heard of until "accidentally" borrowing the CD from a friend. It was so good that my brother from Atlanta "accidentally" borrowed it from me! The group has unmatched harmony! The quality is that of a group which has been singing for at least 10 or more years. I'm recommending this CD to all lovers! If you get it, your love life will explode. Without it, well, you'll continue to have the "average, run of the mill" love life. Take my word for it! It's just that good!

4 out of 5 stars On the DL this album is off the chain.......1999-08-18

People may never hear of this group, but they are just as good as any other r&b group out there today. They can hang with Blackstreet, Dru Hill, 112 etc... If your looking for another group to complete your r&b collection.. check out Elements of life.... on da real
