Dancing Drums

Badmarsh & Shri are that rarest of dance outfits--they're actually better live than on wax. That might be because DJ-programmer Badmarsh and instrumentalist Shri bring another vocalist and percussionist on the road with them, but it's more likely that their sound--an exceedingly organic blend of dance-floor beats and Indian sounds (tabla, flute)--really comes alive in a club. None of that should imply that Dancing Drums is a sterile listen; rather, the enveloping sounds, the funky bass lines, and the use of a lot of sound loops make the album a relaxing experience--but one with a beat, too. Unlike Asian Dub Foundation, another group that brings the sounds and rhythms of the Asian subcontinent into the clubs, Badmarsh & Shri aren't out to dazzle you--sometimes you even get the feeling that they think that would be too easy--but if you listen deeply, you'll be moved just the same. --Randy Silver

2 out of 5 stars nice beats but too boring.......2007-02-12

what drives me crazy is the music being looped over and over.. good beats if ur into drum and bass.

5 out of 5 stars for the fans of nitin sawhney.......2002-12-22

nice music for lover of drum and bass and indian music influences , some traks sounds like nitin sawhney style

2 out of 5 stars Could have been a great CD.......2002-05-25

It's too bad that this composition is overwhelmed by an overbearing, unimaginative, tired drum loop that completely drowns out an otherwise decent jam of Indian music.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty good background music.......2002-02-14

Pretty good CD for background music, but some of the bass lines are a little cheesy.

5 out of 5 stars incredible layering of wonderful sounds.......2001-11-01

This is exactly what i'm looking for in music. I have always loved the sound of the various South Asian percussion instruments that they use in this album, and have various CDs of Tabla and Raga music that I love for this reason. Additionally, I'm an electronica fan, with special interest in music with thick textures. This is that...excellent combination of natural sounds and layering that you can feel. They have a unique take on the South Asian style of vocal percussion (something that has always fascinated me) in 130 steps. If you like drum and bass this is an excellent interesting outpocketing of the genre. Perhaps what I like best about this is that the music is much more original and textured than the other forms of "Asian Underground", techno layered on Asian sounds, usually South Asian and Indian.

      Album Description

TURKU's third full-length CD, Ozlem, evolved over a period of four years, following the release of "Nomads of the Silk Road" in 2000. The title track, Ozlem, was concieved by Ted Monnich at an annual Pennsylvania festival, Pennsic 29. Ted and Farzad composed its passionate arrangement, in a Tashkent hotel, while on tour in Uzbekistan in 2001, only a week before the World Trade Center disaster.

In the following years TURKU worked through the album's songs and arrangements while touring across North America. The resulting collection of songs is rememiscent of "Alley of Istanbul's," their first album, energy. Ozlem is heavy on Turkish melodies that speak to and inspire the soul. The word "Ozlem" in Turkish means "longing." The intensity and emotions of this album shine forth through its songs, eliciting a miriad of emotional responses from the listener. One thing is certain with TURKU, however. When they play, no one can ever sit still.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the average listener.......2002-09-26

Rypdal led a blistering rock trio through the 90s while at the same time writing symphonies and concertos. The two meet here with mixed, thought mostly good, results. Don't expect the ordinary and you won't be disappointed.
The CD opens with a fun, accessible tune by the trio but quickly moves thorough a dense atmospheric piece and when the strings come in they are used both to blend and contrast the guitar trio parts.
The title tune is a marvelous, brooding, granitic blend of strings and guitar. "But on the other hand" slowly builds such a palpable tension between strings and percussion that you'll probably need a minute to recover when it's over.
"One for the roadrunner" is a searing, free style guitar.
In between are pieces where the trio and strings dance, thrust and parry. Rypdal's unique guitar sings (and occasionally screams) throughout.

        3 out of 5 stars Excessively weird.......2000-01-04

This is pretty weird. Terje Rypdal is the composer and electric guitarist, along with drummer, bassist and strings trio. There are two or three decent tracks on here, notably Dancing Without Reindeers and Blue Angel, but the others, I'm afraid, are too weird to be pleasant. I respect Rypdal, and I'm in no doubt that this is highly artistic work, but It's too far out, mostly.
