True Texas style swing. Buy it and start dancin'. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Country Swing at its very best!!!.......2007-01-16

Asleep at the wheel scores big time, again! If ever there was group that could begin to fill the shoes of old time country swing, AATW would have to be right there at the top of the heap, without a doubt. If you like good swing & good fiddle, this CD is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Under the X in Texas.......2007-01-11

Anything by Bob Wills is high on our list, and nobody does Bob better than Asleep at the Wheel. Great compilation of some of the greats of the greats.

5 out of 5 stars Good compilation.......2002-11-06

Swing Time is a good compilation of some of the best songs from three other albums: 10, Western Standard Time, and their out-of-print 1974 Epic self-titled album. It's hard for an individual to put together a representative "best of" collection for a group like Asleep At The Wheel because they've jumped around from one label to the next, and the labels certainly wouldn't want to cooperate with each other. This is a good pick to represent the best of their work for Sony/Epic, if you don't want to collect all their recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Only 80% good........2001-12-01

Some good stuff (especially "House of Blue Lights"), but there are better covers of "San Antonio Rose", "Walkin' the Floor Over You", and especially "Hot Rod Lincoln" (by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen ,almost as good as the original) out there.

3 out of 5 stars Western Standard Time.......2006-07-23

Asleep at the Wheel has been one three favorite bands since the late '70's. I still follow them closely today.

I think though that their best music was in their early years. When their female singer, Chris, O'Connell, left the band I think that they lost something vital to their sound. I'd strongly suggest that anybody interested in this band look at their earlier efforts like 'Texas Gold", 'The Wheel', 'Collision Course', and 'Wheelin' and Dealin'.

That said, 'Western Standard Time' is my favorite of the post-Chris O'Connell albums. Most of the album consists of highly competent covers of old Country and Rockabilly classics such as 'Don't Let Go', 'The House of Blue Lights' and 'Hot Rod Lincoln'.

The album kicks off with a swinging version of 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' that is, in my opinion, worth the price of the album all by itself. A couple of other higlights are their version of the Bob Wills classic, 'That's What I Like about the South' and 'Walk on By'.

In conclusion, I'd say that if you know and love Asleep at the Wheel, this would be a worthy addition to your collection. If you're new to the band, you'd do better to purchase one of the albums I mentioned above.

4 out of 5 stars Son, you gonna drive me to drinkin'.......2004-02-22

This album by western swing band Asleep At The Wheel is an all covers album. If you think that modern country music doesn't sound "country" enough, you should enjoy this album. Asleep At The Wheel play in a style to similar to Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. In face, two of the songs here were first popularized by Bob Wills. That's not to say that Asleep At The Wheel is derivative, because they manage to come up with unique arrangements for the songs. The only real criticism I have is that at 32 minutes long, it's on the short side. But at least you get Willie Nelson as a bonus on "Chatanooga Choo Choo".

5 out of 5 stars Great western swing from Ray and the boys.......2002-11-23

Ray and the boys have been recording western swing music for around thirty years now, keeping the music alive even when no other singers and bands were interested.

This particular album was recorded in 1988 and features many great covers. The band's particular style ensures that you won't ever mistake Asleep at the Wheel's covers for other versions of the same songs.

The set opens with a sensational version of Glenn Miller's Chattanooga choo choo, in which Ray duets with Willie Nelson. Other great covers include Hot rod Lincoln (a song I always associate with Commander Cody, though I believe Johnny Bond was the original singer), That's what I like about the south (Phil Harris), Walk on by (Leroy van Dyke), That lucky old sun (Frankie Laine), San Antonio rose (Bob Wills), Sugarfoot rag (Red Foley) and Walking the floor over you (Ernest Tubb). Indeed, all the tracks are of a very high quality.

Those of you who recognise these names will know that most of the songs originate from the 1940's, generally regarded as the golden age of western swing. This album and others by Askeep at the wheel prove that the songs and the style are still very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars relaxing swing music.......2001-08-09

CD has some nostalgia and timeless music. Well done swing music to relax to. Others who here it always ask who is the artist and name of CD. Must be heard to be truly appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Tons Of Swingin' Fun.......2000-03-12

If you only need one AATW album, this is the one. Or if you're just starting to put together a collection of their great music, this is definitely a good starting album. As is the case with all their albums, every cut is a winner. Whether their own material or remakes of classics, these guys know how to swing & party!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Yes,but it's not the soundtrack to the book!.......2007-07-11

Everybody here thinks the music on the Robert Berry CD is the soundtrack to the book series The Wheel of Time.
NO!It's the soundtrack to the PC game from 1998 with the same name!
I happen to have both and I can confirm the music is basically the same.
So my guess is the makers of the PC game asked Berry to record the music for the game and some stuff got left out.
He decided to record some tracks with members from Celt Rock group Tempest (great band!) to make it complete/some money.
Sure the album isn't great but there's some nice tracks anyway.

Nod bad.Not great.

1 out of 5 stars Gleemen do not use synthesizers.......2006-08-23

None of these songs are particularly inspired, and as other reviewers have mentioned, it was way too modern for the tone of the books. Electronic instruments and 80's-style power ballads have no place in fantasy universes.

Should've gone with a Knight's Tale format if he wanted to make it modern. At least you can giggle along to the fact that it would suggest it KNOWS it's inappropriate.

Besides, who hasn't read the massive One Power battles with "Rock You Like A Hurricane" in the back of their mind?!

5 out of 5 stars It IS good!.......2006-08-17

I HAD to own this CD once I realised there was one. I have rather alot of reviews that say it doesn't go well w/ the books. In a few of the songs it doesn't go but most of them do. The male vocals could use a bit of work, they are not horrible, but they aren't what you would buy the soundtrack for either! They female vocals on the other hand are much better. She really sings well on the CD, but again they could use somework. I could sit and listen to this w/out reading the books, but I could also read the books. I think that the songs go well w/ the books because the books have a modern day feel to them as well as a medieval feel. As well for not being able to afford a profesional concert band he did really well on the instraments he chose. I think it is good that he incorprated modern day instraments as is really shows the attitude of the books. This CD is worth buying is you like this kind of music and/or you love the fantisy world that Robert Jorden has created!

2 out of 5 stars Good music, but not Wheel of Time..........2006-01-25

I tell you first that I only heard the clips on this page. Then, I thinks it's very good music, but it sounds like it would have been better for Halo or Emperor: Battle for Dune, it's somewhat epic but too much artificial, mechanized for a fantasy saga where the newest technology is a crossbow... Buy it if you like the music, but if you are looking for something to hear while you read the books buy LOTR sondtrack.

1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2006-01-25

Maybe the artist should have glanced at the cover on one of the books before starting this, reading one or two couldn't have hurt either.

I may be wrong on the artist's goal, but due to the fact that the music fits in not at all with the books it appears that he wished to cash in on a big name, and this was it.

Even modern instruments would have been OK, but electric keyboard? come on!!!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE VOICE OF ENIGMA........2005-11-22

i've had this cd for several years now. and its as enjoyable now as it was at first. of course in the states sandra is really only heard as the female voice of enigma. but those of us lucky enough to know her as just sandra have enjoyed years of great pop songs that defined the 80's. her old songs remind me of my summers in greece (where she was huge), growing up.

this "comeback" cd is a masterpeice. it contains some of her best songs. such as "forgive me", "forever", "footprints", and the depeche mode cover, "freelove". (they're all f songs?!?!). as well as talk tal's classic, "such a shame".

this album is her most "enigma" sounding. so if your a fan of enigma, but new to sandra, then this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars The Wheel of 'Success'.......2005-11-22

Sandra Cretu is probably mostly known in the United States as 'the voice of Enigma' or Mrs. Cretu, the wife of the brilliant Romanian-German producer Michael Cretu (the inventor of Enigma, known for "Sadeness", "Mea Culpa", "Return to Innocence", "T.N.T. for the Brain", etc.) However, before lending her seductive voice to her husband's enigmatic project, Mrs. Cretu thrived on the success of her solo career, which includes some of the best of 1980's retro-dance hits; "Maria Magdalena", "In the Heat of the Night", "Secret Land" and "Everlasting Love" were all great hits that catapulted Sandra into the Madonna-esque universe of German dance music. Nevertheless, her '80's music, though excellent in its own right, leaves no significant imprint on this blockbuster of an album. "The Wheel of Time" (2002) is a production love child of husband Michael Cretu and fellow Enigma pal, Jens Gad. Although reminiscent of some of Enigma's sounds, the album is mostly an experimentation in contemporary European dance culture. By any means NOT a euro-pop album, or a trance/techno venture, "The Wheel of Time" is a darker breed of dance that stands virtually independent of any dance-type category you might be tempted to put it in. Simply speaking, it is its own category. And with the assistance of her genius spouse, this is - by no doubt - a real Cretu gem....
        1) forgive me (9/10) great opener; sets a great tone for the rest of the album.
        2) footprints (9/10) sounds a lot like Enigma, very strong production.
        3) motivation (10/10) this one will warm up your soul; very inspirational, uplifting lyrics (and sound)
        4) i close my eyes (10/10) great ballad; it almost seems to take you take you somewhere....and it is a very pleasant place...
        5) perfect touch (10/10) one of my favorites, i love her voice, the production and the tribal chants in the background; this should have been a single.
        6) silent running (9/10) a very nice rendition of a well known cover.
        7) such a shame (10/10) another favorite; this one will make you want to dance.
        8) now! (9/10) another uplifting song, this one is a duet with her hubby.
        9) free love (10/10) a cover of the Depeche Mode (2001) song of the same name; dare I say better than the original?? : )
        10) forever (7/10) the weakest track, yet still a gem, (another ballad)
        11) the wheel of time (10/10) I love this one, kind of dark, but a very strong closing for the album.....you will love it (also reminiscent of Enigma)

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2005-09-25

Sandra has been quite discreet lately, but she still makes wonderful albums. The ballad "I Close My Yes" is her favorite... and mine as well!

        5 out of 5 stars awesome .......2005-05-07

this is a wonderfull album; it has not just sandra's nice voice but also engima's flavor. the best song on the album is the title track, the wheel of time; it has a very creative beat, nice lyrics and a 21st century music sound. the next best song is such a shame.

1 out of 5 stars the greatest disappointment.......2004-02-29

I bought this CD, and when I heard this der'mo, I got very sad.
What happened to Sandra (and her yobar')?

This CD is one of her worst albums.

You should buy her albums 1985, 1988, 1992 and 1995 (if you wish to listen to her good songs).

If you are NOT her fan, then you may buy this CD (and not to buy her other albums, because those CDs and this CD are not the same thing).
