Blast off with one of the true cult classic albums of the '70s! After woodshedding in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area during the '60s (and recording with high school buddy T-Bone Burnett), Scott Fraser, David Bullock, Phil White and Brett Wilson landed as Space Opera in New York, where the already-legendary Clive Davis offered to sign them on Columbia. Much to the music biz's amazement, they turned him down, opting for more creative control by signing with Epic's Canadian arm, for whom they recorded this excellent but little-promoted album in 1972. An inspired blend of Frank Zappa, the Band, Steely Dan and especially the Byrds, this record is still talked about in hushed tones by 12-string guitarists, as Scott Fraser's unique tuning technique (each string-pair is tuned to 5ths instead of octaves) resulted in a truly monumental sound. Add to that their ample harmonies, and you can hear why Space Opera is considered by some to be the Byrds' natural heirs, or at least their prog-rock! cousins! This is an awesome collection of unsettling melodies from the masters, not just some horror movie themes (though it does have some Psyco). You will end up playing a round of "Where have I heard that score before?" because these melodies are very iconic.
The only complaint is that the track listing is somewhat occult. One has to use amazon.com's track listings and fill in the numbers.
Still, this is a great buy!!

I would like to begin my review of this wonderful CD by stating that I am not a "kid." (unless you consider a 14-year-old to still be a child) I am, however, too lazy too start a new Amazon.com account before typing about this great CD.

Now then... In my eyes, this CD recieved 5 stars because of (what else!) the music. The quality of the music to be more specific. The sound of it was great and the selection of the pieces was pure genius. My personal favorite would have to be a three-way tie between Bach's Toccata and Fugue, Dukas' Sorceror's Apprentice, and Stravinsky's The Right of Spring.

I will leave you tonight with one final thought... Is it just me, or are most of the pieces from "Fantasia"? At least 7 (!) of the pieces are from that age-old classic. I think it's funny that they are on a collection such as "The Most Frightening Music in the Universe". And could the cover art be any worse?!

All in all it is a great CD to add to any collection. (and cheap!) Thanks!

This cd is a little different from most. Let me explain! This cd has a great mixture of several types of music. This cd features popular, classical, sacred, and wedding music. What a treat it is to have all these beautuful songs together on one cd.

The main concern I have for this cd is the fact that some of the arrangements were not up to par. As you will see, all songs are not ideal for harp arrangements. I liked about half of the songs performed on this cd. I feel like the song selection could have been a little bit better. If that had happened, I think this would have been an outstanding cd.

Actually, there was a 2001 release of new material from Space Opera. It's available on their website. If you like the original release, I think you might like this one as well. I'll admit I'm a bit prejudiced, as I engineered and played keys on the new release, and remastered the old one for Collector's Choice. BTW, for all their West Coast influences, the band is from Fort Worth, Tx. Two of the four original members have passed away, Brett Wilson(drums) about 2 years ago, and Scott Fraser(guitars, vocals, and writer) in September. And, yes, I was a fan long before I met or worked with the guys.

I used to see this album in record bins in the NY/NJ area but I never bought it. However the group's name and the artwork always left me curious as how this was musically. Collector's Choice cleared up the mystery by releasing this on cd in 2004. What a stunning work! Why this wasn't on regular rotation with the playlists of New York FM stations is even more of a mystery. Guitar fans will find nirvana here is the riveting interplay of the 6 & 12 string workouts,sometimes overdubbed to the level of frenzy on tracks like "Holy River" and the closer "Over and Over". This is not the only calling card as there are fine melodies and excellent vocal harmonies throughout. Comparisons to the Byrds are valid, but Space Opera is no CLONE! The country influence is seamlessly blended into the music, making it unique enough that it could hardly be compared to the country rock of its era. Too bad I never got to see them live; even more of a pity that this was their only release. I guess the old saying "leave 'em wanting more" more than applies here. Don't miss this one!

The increadable thing about Space Opera is how easy the music fits into the early '70s time frame. I never heard the album back then - but I should have. The music is like finding some lost high school or college record you somehow did not know about. You put it on and think, how did I miss this?
Yes, it is kind of like the Byrds, or Buffalo Springfield, but Space Opera is not a knock off group. They have their own unique sound. And it is very good.
What if Buffalo Springfield had put out only one album, then disbanded, with its members no longer in the music business? It would be a great album, but really hard to find. And it would be a sound unique to the time. If you enjoy the better music from the early 70's, Space Opera is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Seven Miles High!.......2004-08-11

This is a nice reissue of this lost classic from 1972. Don't be fooled by the title though. There is very little outer space exploration going on here. If you are thinking Pink Floyd or Hawkwind, you may be dissapointed. This record has more in common with some of the Byrds more progressive and experimental stuff but it doesn't quite reach the heights acheived by Roger McGuinn and company.



This is basically a west coast country rock effort. It belongs alongside Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills & Nash, Poco, early Neil Young, Flying Burrito Brothers and early Eagles records. Space Opera differs from those bands in that their song structures are not as tight. They pursue a looser jam style of rock that might be compared to Yes or King Crimson. So I guess you could call this "West Coast Prog Country-Rock." There are lots of nice CSN vocal harmonies and 12 string guitar explorations that are heavily Byrds influenced. And lots of freakout jams that sound like Frank Zappa just joined Crazy Horse. It all amounts to a very interesting combination and kind of a missing link between a lot of the aforementioned bands.



This CD will be appreciated by collectors and cutout bin diggers like myself. The one drawback I would mention is that the songwriting is a little weak and the lyrics are not the best. Sound quality is excellent. Another nice reissue by Collector's Choice. This label may soon give Rhino a run for its money.

I remember my earliest musical influences as a child was classical and baroque music. I grew up listening to Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, and so on. I always found the music to be very soothing and relaxing to listen to. Two decades later, I still love listening to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Pachelbel, and Vivaldi to name a few.

One of my favorite classical compilations that I still listen to is a compilation of wedding music called "Musiques Nuptiales". I bought this cd solely for the music, not because of any impending nuptials (which I have no desire). This cd has all of my favorite classical/baroque movements ranging from Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" to Vivaldi's "Concerto No. 1" (taken from the spring section of the timeless "The Four Seasons"). I just love Purcell's "Trumpet Voluntary" with the brass section. It is vibrant and full of energy. Of course I can never tire of listening to the emotionally moving sounds of Pachebel's "Canon in D Major". I never tire of listening to this song. The melodies really moves me to tears. I also love Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring". It is a beautiful song that simply takes my breathe away. "Concerto No. 1" is another personal favorite movement. Taken from the spring section of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons", everytime I listen to this song I envision springtime. I can see the birds chirping and flowers blooming.

The only weakness to this album is that I didn't think it was necessary to have two versions of Wagner's "Wedding March" and Mendelssohn's "Wedding March". I definitely preferred the orchestral versions over the organ versions. Then again this cd is called wedding music and probably offered two different versions of each song for the couple to choose during their ceremony. Otherwise, great compilation of the most beautiful classical and baroque music. It never ceases to amaze me how this music still manages to hold up in a world filled with disposable trends.

3 out of 5 stars Pomp and Circumstance still has it's place!.......2007-04-20

As a professional wedding organist, I play what the bride wants (within reason). That could mean the old war-horse from the 70s, Paul Stookey's "Wedding Song," or a more modern love song like the O'Neill Brothers are known for playing. I still get requests for Wagner and Mendelssohn and expect I always will. But I have played "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for a postlude and got rave reviews! I've also played "Moonlight Sonata" by request, which I personally found a bit dark and dreary for a wedding. The important thing at the ceremony is that love is celebrated and people have a good time. It doesn't matter what type of music you use. But back to the topic--this CD. Marie-Claire Alain (who I've seen in concert) is an old school artist, very respected in the concert world. The recording is not the highest fidelity, but the selections are fairly representative of the classical repertoire. If you can hire a trumpeter for the Charpentier "Te Deum" (Track 1), do it! It's regal.

To the lady from New Zealand. I understand you may not like this style of music but that does not mean you should say that people who do like it have no taste. This is NOT music for a small intimate wedding. I agree with that. However, this music is wonderful for large weddings in large churches with large organs. Just like quiet, romantic music for a small intimate wedding will bring the sweet "aww" from your attendees, this music will bring goose-bumps. That being said, this recording gets 4 stars simply because the quality of the recording is not the best of these pieces. Enjoy this music that never goes out of style.

I'm sorry, but brides in 2000 are a little less pompous than this. For those that are, please excuse me. This music is unimaginative, unromantic and certainly creates an air of sterility and formality - if that's your thing, go for it, but my upcoming marriage is about love, intimacy and romance and this CD is NOT for us.

    - especially the Walzt-Gavottte is playfull and summes of live and fun - a bit Childrens Corner here. But some of the pieces are very etniclike and can be foreign to listen to. Though - it sounds interesting.

    When the Tomita music hit the popular music stores in the early 1970's, synthesizers had been used, for the most part, as substitution for the "real" instruments. Isao Tomita's vibrant, truly musical use of his instrument reversed that erroneous impression for all who heard him. In the album, Extraterrestrial Classics, one is treated to the wild cacaphony of voices in the Mos Eisley Cantina and soothed with the crystalline spell of Claire de Lune. The music is sublime and silly, truly fantasy music for all ages. My children grew up on it, and my first old vinyl record was pilfered by a 9th grade student one day early in the 1990's. I am purchasing the old fantasy on a new CD just for myself....and because teaching a unit on wave motion, sound and music isn't complete without Tomita!

    This updated version of the Odyssey by a core member of Einsturzende Neubauten and Andreas Ammer echoes of great space psychodelic music (David Bowie's Space Oddity, anyone? And also echoes of one-hit-wonder Peter Schilling's Major Tom) and has wonderful spoken bits, tying the tracks together into a cohesive adventure (a-la Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.) Of all of Einheit's side projects, this one and Radio Inferno make perfect bookends worth repeated listening.
