Ed Rush & Optical are two of the best known DJ/producers in the drum ‘n’ bass, and dance music scene. Before the two created the now legendary Virus label, they had already made quite a name for themselves – while Optical was engineering for Grooverider, Goldie, and Jumping Jack Frost, Ed Rush was releasing materials for seminal labels such as No-U-Turn and Prototype.

They have DJ’d in virtually every corner of the globe, and done remixes for top producers like Josh Wink, Reprazent, and most recently Candi Staton’s "You’ve Got the Love," the song that was featured on HBO’s hit series Sex and the City. They’ve also appeared on many of the biggest drum ‘n’ bass labels including Prototype, V Recordings and the legendary Metalheadz. Their first artist album Wormhole is widely regarded as the best drum ‘n’ bass album of all time.

Nirvana may have been the biggest thing in the music world in the early '90s, but the trio maintained an uncommon devotion to core fans who knew them when they were still sleeping in a van. Fending off the adoration of punk-rock dabblers in the media and their audience while simultaneously welcoming stalwart underground-music supporters, Kurt Cobain did things on his own terms--until it all came crashing down. A decade after Cobain's 1994 suicide and the band's demise, With the Lights Out remains true to the ethos that defined the band and the alt-rock revolution that rose and fell with them.

Eschewing the standard hits-sprinkled-with-rarities mix, this lovingly compiled three-CD, one-DVD collection is made up almost entirely of previously unreleased selections. The handful of previously heard tracks are obscurities along the lines of the group's cover of "Here She Comes Now," recorded for a 1990 indie-rock tribute to the Velvet Underground. But it's not the B-sides and compilation oddities that define this idiosyncratic set; rather, its spirit is captured in the bedroom demos, radio performances, and sloppy amateur video recordings that catch Cobain and cohorts developing from just another punk- and metal-inspired bunch of grunge rockers pounding away in the bass player's mom's living room into a band that defined an era. --Steven Stolder

Album Description

The box set spans Nirvana's entire career, from a recording of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" at the band's first show in 1987 to solo acoustic performances from singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain in 1994. With The Lights Out features a 60-page color booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and writer Neil Strauss. The three CDs, arranged largely chronologically contains home and rehearsal demos, including for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (whose lyric "With the lights out" provides the set's title), "Rape Me," "Heart Shaped Box" and a trio penned by legendary bluesman Leadbelly. Heard in the 12 previously unreleased solo acoustic tracks are such gems as "All Apologies," "Lithium" and "Sliver." Six previously unreleased radio performances range from "Anorexorcist" in 1987 to "Dumb" in 1991 (two years before it was on 1993's In Utero). Along with the remaining debuts are a handful of earlier issued, though rare, b-sides and demos as well as the original Butch Vig mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Highlighted on the With The Lights Out DVD is a previously unreleased video of nine songs performed in 1988 at bassist Krist Novoselic's mother's house in Aberdeen, Washington; the rare "In Bloom" Sub Pop music video, and 10 never-before-seen live performances. Noteworthy among them are debut renditions of "Pennyroyal Tea", "Smells Like Teen Spirit" both from early 1991. Also premiering is an unlikely performance of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "Seasons In The Sun" shot at a Rio de Janeiro studio.

This collection of Nirvana's greatest music follows the band from their beginning to end. This is a must own for anyone who likes nirvana.

Rare Nirvana.......2007-06-19

This was the Box Set that Nirvana fans had been waiting for. With it's release they were not disappointed. The Box Set is arranged chronologically, with demos, song outtakes, and studio mixes from Nirvana's career. My personal highlights include the Leadbelly cover Ain't It a Shame, the Nevermind Outakes of Old Age and Verse, Chorus Verse, and the last demo ever recorded by Cobain called Do Re Mi. Some of this makes you realize that some of Cobain's strongest work was never released. Old Age had top 40 potential if it would have been completed. Do Re Mi has a beautiful melody and beatleesque tone. My only regret is that some of the demos did not belong on here due to their roughness. This space might have been better filled perhaps with Nirvana's radio performances or concert performances. The DVD also contained rare Nirvana footage. However, I was disappointed it didn't contain more of Nirvana's T.V. performances or scenes from their In Utero tour. Overall this is a great resource for any Nirvana fan who wants to dig deeper into this band.

Incredible for sheer variety.......2007-05-06

I like the demos a lot, I am a songwriter myself and they remind me that even Kurt Cobain figured out his songs on his own. As far as some having a problem with no b sides, most of the B sides you wanted are on this! Including D-7, Even In His Youth, I Hate Myself And I Want To Die, Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol, Marigold, Moist Vagina, Curmudgeon, Verse Chorus Verse, Aneurysm, with the only missing songs being Spank Thru and You Know You're Right (Which I'll admit is no good that the only way you can have that song is by buying the greatest hits collection). In the Butch Vig Teen Spirit Version the guitar sounds much more like the guitars of Garbage (Vig's band) than the raw visceral guitar on the Nevermind recording.

While a B side collection would be an excellent companion piece to the Greatest Hits collection and it would be great if the company would make one, these are now probably my favorite Nirvana discs I own for the sheer rawness of the recordings. Nirvana was a big fan of minimalism, and while I do not like every track, the Sage covers, Sappy, Oh The Guilt, the Here She Comes Now cover, and the White Lace And Strange cover (Proving once and for all that Cobain could actually play guitar), are some of my favorite Nirvana tracks ever.

Stellar Collection Of Rarities In High-Quality Sound . . ........2007-05-04

this says it best. three discs of previously hard-to-find Nirvana b-sides
and rarities all mastered in high-quality sound. most of these tracks were
only available on the Outcesticide releases in the '90s (with poor sound quality and terribly overpriced). at the time, this is the only access we
had to any Nirvana material of this type. most of us could not get enough of this band back in the day, so we would pay whatever we had to get it.
the first three discs are a collection of live, b-side and rare tracks in chronological order (for the most part) and the fourth disc is a DVD of
the band in December 1988 (with former drummer Chad Channing) practicing
at Chris Novoselic's house (bet his mother wasn't happy) with a Sub Pop video of "In Bloom" and other greatness. i have owned this for over two
years now, and at least one of these discs rarely ever leave my CD changer. very enjoyable. if you're even a moderate fan, get this, it is worth it !!!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

If you like Hank Jr. and Sr., Dwight Yoakam, etc you will love this collection. George Strait is one of the most diverse, talented and soulful of our contemporary country singers. This is a superb and well-rounded look at this wonderful artist. This collection and his CD Honkytonkin are my all-time George Strait favorites. Additionally, this box set is a a real bargain.

4 CD's of absolutely outstanding music, by a Living Legend. Here's a voice that has stuck with the traditional country formula since the late 1970's through the boy-band trash of Nashville today. George took the straight forward Honky Tonk approach of Lefty and Carl Smith, and combined them with a modern Western Swing that has made him one of the few distinctive voices remaining in Country Music. This box set is superbly recorded and I cannot imagine a better sound. I am partial to the first disc, and especially the first few "obscure" numbers of the 1970's....but, the 2d & 3d discs' coverage of Mr Strait during Country's late heydey (the late-80's) are every bit as good. You owe it to yourself to get this one; it's complete, and best of all, it's very affordable. A+

Just like my title says, this box includes EVERYTHING worth listening to from every album till his 1983 "Easy Come Easy Go" album and more (With the exception of the Christmas album). I believe it includes everything which ranked #70 up and and some that never ranked at all, and tops it off with maybe 6 unreleased songs. Two of which became top 5 hits, and one being a duet with the man himself, Frank Sinatra. And also includes a nice little book with info about the songs among other things. Well worth the price for everything you get.

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Another Great Live Document.......2007-04-24

This 4 cd set is superbly recorded and the band is fearless. It is also poignant, as this was the last overseas tour that Pigpen played. Listen to him perform here, and you'd never know.

"Some Folks Look For Answers, Others Look For Fights...".......2006-03-25

Steppin' Out (along with Hundred Year Hall) is probably the greatest example of how powerful the Dead were in 1972. This set contains, in my opinion, the greatest Dead lineup, minus Mickey Hart.

What is actually great about this set is that fans of the early Live/Dead era stuff or fans of the Post-Pigpen years will get the best of both worlds, here. You get Pigpen's B3 organ, Soulful Voice and astounding harp blowing wrapped up with Keith Godcheaux's stinging grand piano (he used the Helpinstill piano pickup system, that's why the piano always had somewhat of an electric feel to it, which you couldn't get with microphones; piano players and/or Helpinstill enthusiasts, take note).

Steppin' Out contains so many definitive Dead moments that were never released. Disc 1 and 2 contain superb performances of the shorter songs, especially "Greatest Story Ever Told", "Deal", "Black-Throated Wind", and "Playing In The Band". Speaking of "Playing In The Band", I really think that this is the best version that the Dead had ever done of the song. I really don't think that any hour-long jams that this song bookended after 1974 really captured the essence of the song, as well as this version does.

Speaking of hour-long jams, the "Truckin'-Drums-The Other One-El Paso-The Other One-Wharf Rat" jam on Disc 3 is the true defining moment of this set. However, "Dark Star-Sugar Magnolia-Caution (Don't Stop On The Tracks)" on disc 4 is just as deserving of the same title. But the only problem I have with it is that Donna Jean Godcheaux doesn't get up and harmonize on the "Sunshine Daydream" section with Bob Weir. She did that so well when you heard it on "Europe '72" (although I read that Donna's part was later added during studio overbuds for "Europe '72", so that answers my question). After mayhem of "Caution", Disc 4 and the entire experience in general, ends with the best closing song ever imaginable, "Brokedown Palace". It just sums up everything that has been experienced throughout the duration of the set.

Getting down to the musicians, Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh's lead guitar-bass guitar interplay has never been performed so well, especially in the cerebral modal crosstalk throughout "The Other One" and "Dark Star". Whenever Jerry plays low notes on guitar or Phil plays high notes on bass, they sound so similar, it's almost impossible to tell them apart. Bob Weir's solid rhythm guitar has never sounded so rich and full and hasn't since (during the tune up between "Ramble On Rose" and "Black-Throated Wind", he plays the opening guitar lick from "Weather Report Prelude", which makes you wonder what other things they may have needed these tapes for). Billy Kreutzmann's drumming is just so solid , especially on "Drums" where he rings in "The Other One" in true rhythmic splendor. Along with Kreutzmann, McKernan's random moments of backup percussion (tambourine [audible on "Deal", "Jack Straw", "Wharf Rat", and "Black Throated Wind"] maracas/shakers ["Sugar Magnolia", and "Playing In The Band"], guiro ["Uncle John's Band"]) really does at least make up for parts that were originally played by Mickey Hart in the studio. Still the double drumset crosstalk is sadly absent, and in a way was never the same again after Hart's departure and return, being that both Hart and Kruetzmann changed their drum sounds and styles radically after 1972.

Basically to summarize, any body who even likes the Dead a little bit, should get this set just to here really good live versions of their short songs, but any devoted Dead fanatic who followed the band in it's later years, but couldn't get over to England in time for the recordings of these shows (or you weren't born yet), should get this for the metaphysical/psychological rush of musical mayhem that is the jams, that encapsulate the ends of discs 2, 3, and 4.

The Dead sound very powerful, yet very natural. In later years, they would expand their stage setup with so much percussion equipment and amplifiers that the music seemed to become less original and astounding. This is why, in many respects, this was The Dead at their pinnacle, with Pigpen on his way out and Keith and Donna on their way in. Pretty much the only thing that could've made this better would've been a surprise appearance by Mickey Hart, but unfortunately that was never to be (at least with Pigpen still in the group).

So please, do yourself a favor and buy the album. I promise that a fan of The Dead on any level will love it.

Greatness.......2005-08-10

Judging solely on the basis of DARK STAR, Steppin' Out
is a no-brainer 5 stars. If you program for Dark Star plus
the two OTHER ONE tracks, you have a full hour of brilliant
jamming with a bare minimum of vocals. Now you may wonder,
the Rockin' The Rhein release, ALSO from 1972, ALSO has a
long DARK STAR that is over-the-top fantastic; so the question
becomes: is the 1972 Steppin' Out DARK STAR different enough from the 1972 Rockin' The Rhein DARK STAR to justify purchase?
Hell yes!!! In fact, it's COMPLETELY different! To my ears,
Jerry's guitar tone throughout Steppin' Out has a much sharper tone to it...I'm guessing it's because he was using a Stratocaster
guitar? Anyway, the long DARK STAR tracks on Steppin' Out and
Rockin' The Rhein are very different jams...both GREAT.
Also, if you search around, Steppin' Out has some definitive
vocal tracks as well...Sugaree, Deal, Ramble On Rose, Comes A Time, Brokedown Palace, etc., and after all, I believe it's best to buy Grateful Dead CDs for favored "definitive" tracks you program for, rather than playing the CDs from start to finish. Incidentally, Steppin' Out has some cool pictures in the little book. No "touch of gray" in Jerry's hair here!

Good set... but certainly not perfect. .......2005-03-28

I bought this 4 CD set because I was curious about the early 1972 era of the dead and Europe '72 didn't quite satisfy me. While many people give it loads of praise and it was a fairly good album considering the time it was made (hour-long jams just don't fit onto vinyl), current stereo technology has progressed to the point where a set like this is probably a better buy.

I must say that there is truly something for every kind of Dead fan on here. Fans of "good old rock 'n roll" will find plenty of what they want on here, as will people who like long, spaced-out jams and casual listeners who want to hear popular songs such as "Uncle John's Band" and "Sugar Magnolia." As a general rule, this CD's get more interesting as they increase in number; disc 1 is mostly short rock songs, while disc 4 is a transcendant voyage through one's inner psyche that is up there with Live/Dead and Anthem of the Sun as my favorite disc of Grateful Dead material in my collection.

Probably the most interesting musical ideas on this set are presented by the two keyboardists: Keith and Pigpen. By this time, Keith is fully integrated into the band's sound; sometimes, he can sound so dominant that I wonder why Pigpen isn't back home, nursing his health. Then the band launches into one of Mr. McKerman's songs or the organ kicks in with a funky groove and I realize just how important he is to the group. His finest moments appear on disc 4. "The Stranger" is arguably the finest song he ever sang, featuring some incredible lyrics and a great solo from Jerry. It would have been a great substitution for the somewhat lackluster "You Win Again" and "Ramble on Rose" on Europe '72. The "Caution" on here is probably the strongest jam I've herd from the Dead at this point, perhaps excepting the "Dark Star" on Live/Dead. Every band member gets a chance to shine and contribute to the sinister brew that follows an extremely high-energy "Sunshine Daydream," with screams from Bob Weir and Pigpen to drive up the intensity. At one point, the dying maniac in the cowboy hat sings a line as he plays the same melody on the organ... which is probably the highlight of the entire jam. Just as the song fades out, angry and distorted guitar breaks the silence, prompting two more minutes of additional jamming. THIS is what chaos sounds like. THIS is the sound of war, of panic and confusion, of lost souls heading to their doom and screaming in pain.

Needless to say, the entire set isn't nearly as intense or even as interesting. Quite frankly, some songs ("Sugaree," "Mexicali Blues," "Deal") sound quite boring to these ears. Perhaps that's why I'm giving this four stars; although there are some great recordings on here, a three disc set would serve the same purpose only without the occational track you have to skip. Were I reviewing the downloadable version of this on the iTunes music store, which is about ten dollars cheaper, I might decide to go for the full five stars.... however, this is the physical copy and is thus priced differently (although you do get a nice color booklet with an essay and pictures of the band). I reccomend this for people who already like the Dead and are interested in what REALLY went on in Europe in 1972. As I mentioned earlier, any kind of Dead listener will find something to like about this, although probably not the whole thing.

Very Good Recording.......2005-03-05

This is a great era in the Dead's music as we all know. If your a fan of the Godchaux's then get this now if you dont have it already! I personally like the dead before Keith and (mainly) Donna came on board, but this 4-disc release is generally pretty damn good. Most of their poppy short songs are on discs 1 and 2 (the Playing in the Band is only 10 minutes but we have to remember this is when PITB was still relatively new/young) You will find most (notice I said most) of their jamming on discs 3 and 4. The sound quality on this release is excellent.

I won't go on picking apart each and every song, so go out and buy it and find out for yourself how good this release is. I definately would recommend this over Europe '72 because A. You get twice as much music, B. You get way better songs included on this release, and C. this IS europe (well, england) in the year 1972! You will pretty much find the same quality in this 4-disc set and much more than in Europe '72.

Don't even hesitate, this is definately a worthy collection to be put in your collection.

Not what I expected. I only like 2 songs on the whole disk. I'm gonna try to give it to my son. Maybe he'll enjoy it from a younger prospective. No reflection on the shopping experience. Quick delivery and service. Wish I could exchange it for another CD though.

I love this CD and yes it is very different but it is his style and that is what drew some people to him.... I do believe that Tonex is anointed for such a time as this.. alot of things that he preaches or sings about.. some people just choose to glaze over like its okay or non-existent... so yes I applaud his spiritual boldness to step OUT THE BOX and tackle what others chose to overlook to avoid losing friends or even in some cases their congregation.. I think that that those who are speaking negatively about him should try and look past his sound and appearance and listen to the lyrics... which they all hold truth... A lot of people are used to the "old time way" but that era is over.... we have new issues.. and even worse strongholds that are affecting our society today.. and we need more people like him who are not afraid to speak out against such things... I've seen him sing live and I've heard him preach and I have nothing negative to say about him... futhermore I dont think that we should try and bash him or try to weigh out his anointing or spirituality... that is srictly between him and God... everyone has their kinks to iron out so who are we to judge and say who has this much anointing and who doesnt.. I agree with the last reviewer who says that they hope that he takes care of his personal issues and hit us with a strong come back... I believe that he is and will continue to be a great assest to our generation today..

This is one of the most amazing albums I have ever heard. There is so much substance and power and anointing in this album, it's a bit scarry. I truly hope and pray that his personal issues will work out and he will come back to the game better and more anointed than ever.

3 songs out of the double cd that are worth listening to. I'm going to give it away, it's to radical, yokes wont be destroyed, people are going to be confused. It doesn't bless your spirit. We need something to bring us back to God, with all these people killing babies, and killing each other we need good news and God music.

His Annointing Requires Liberated Saints!!!.......2006-02-05

Tonex has a very free spirit. Those who believe that he goes over board or does a little too much are those who are still living on the "STONE AGE!" This is a new generation with new demons and new blue prints. They way the enemy tempted the older saints is not the way he is tempting us today. He's coming harder and more powerful than ever before. It's time out for tradition or church as usual because you can rest assure that Satan is not rising up against us with fornication as usual, drugs as usual, homosexuality as usual, rebellion as usual, even hypocritical and judgemental as usual. We can't continue to fight the devil and his boys with their new strategies with our traditional tactics. Our praise needs to be free. If dressing a little outside the church satisfaction is what it takes to bring them in then let's do what we have to do to get the lost souls in and THEN once we have them home we can begin the healing process and start to impart to them what being saved is all about but they have get in the door first. By Any Means Necessary. And if we feel that someone is doing something inappropriate than we need to incourage whoever it may be to maybe do it a little differently not discourage them because WE FEEL it's wrong. We all have our ways of praising God. There is no where in the Bible that states HOW He want us to bless Him and praise Him...He just wants us to do it. Basically you have to have a radical praise to understand a radical praiser.(it takes one to know one) Also take into consideration what his past may have been. We don't know ALL that he had to overcome and there may still be strongholds on him that through his RIDICAL PRAISE are being broken off him so that he can be as free as possible. We "christians" need to learn not to point the finger or bad mouth everything that we don't understand. Everything that God may give someone is not for everyone to understand.(what God has for me it is for me) If you are a rdical saint with a radical praise, if you are ready to break out of tradition and tear down the walls of the church, if you are ready to experience a greater more powerful demension in the spirit realm, even if you are craving for a new way to worship the Lord...this CD is for you. (Tonex, keep on doing what you're doing because you do it well. Get all that God has for you. Continue to do everything you do for the Lord so He will get the glory in all that you do. If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30

Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.

Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.

A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24

Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.
