Originally released in 1984, four years after John Lennon's death, Milk & Honey is probably best thought of as a companion piece to the better-known Double Fantasy. Like Double Fantasy, Milk & Honey contains equal but separate contributions from Lennon and Ono: lashings of dreadful, self-indulgent arty noodling (mostly, but not exclusively, Ono's) interspersed with sharp, pugnacious songwriting (mostly, but not exclusively, Lennon's). The subject matter throughout is the one that preoccupies all of Lennon and Ono's collaborations, namely themselves and each other. This is, very occasionally, undeniably touching. It is much more often as cringe-inducing as overhearing cooing lovers on a bus--Lennon and Ono always believed that we could never have too much information. The best moments here are those infrequent ones when Lennon directs his gaze somewhere other than at the adoring eyes of Ono--notably the exuberant "Nobody Told Me." The extra tracks on this new edition are three new paeans to themselves by Lennon and Ono, and an interview with the pair recorded shortly before Lennon's death, in which he reiterates his subscription to the philosophy of absurd, naive utopianism that tends to make obvious sense to people rich enough to do as they please. --Andrew Mueller

5 out of 5 stars Lennon's swan song delightfully delivers!.......2007-01-23

These songs, the remainder from 1980's "Double Fantasy" sessions deliver a sharp and delightful musical punch. While they aren't as "slick" as "Double Fanatasy" (John had planned to double track his vocals after Christmas, 1980), tracks such as "Nobody Told Me" , "I Don't Want to Face It" and "Steppin Out" are John at his rock and roll best. Songs such as the reggae-influenced "Borrowed Time" and the tropical island-drenched "Forgive Me" are wonderful and offer a glmpse of the great music that was to come..... In addition, Yoko's "You're The One" is a classic "Walking On Thin Ice" esqe recording---and this remastered edition features John's "lead" vocal on Yoko's "Every Man Has a Woman" (as a bonus track). I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Double Fantasy, Pt. 2.......2006-05-30

Milk and Honey was recorded (mostly) at the same time as Double Fantasy. However, as with most posthumous recordings, listeners never really know if Milk and Honey would have appeared as we have it now. Would tracks have been removed/added? Would John have added a couple more guitar tracks, harmony lines, lyrics, etc.? Would John and Yoko abandon the dialogue-style running order of Double Fantasy?

We'll never know. The same problem has been addressed in response to albums such as Jimi Hendrix's First Rays of the New Rising Sun. Though it's hard to avoid imagining what could've been had Lennon lived to continue his late-career renaissance, Milk and Honey is a rather nice document of what was going on just before his death. And it's a pretty good album on its own terms, too.

It's certainly rougher than Double Fantasy, but this is actually a good thing, as that album often sounds a little overproduced in retrospect. And thank God they left in those little snippets of John talking in the studio - it's nice as a look into the man's wonderful personality. And, in general, Lennon's music is pretty damn good, too, especially on "Nobody Told Me," "Borrowed Time," and "Grow Old With Me." His only throwaway is "(Forgive Me) My Little Flower Princess," and considering the limited amount of Lennon material out there, it's nice to have anyway. However, it shares a glaring flaw with Double Fantasy.

Yoko Ono's songs just don't match up with Lennon's. It's not only in singing talent or songwriting - her style often disrupts Lennon's more powerful themes and music. Now, I'm not one for Yoko-bashing (in particular, I thought an earlier review that resorted to childish name-calling was positively vicious and tasteless), but I also don't believe she was as talented as her husband. At the very least, one must admit that her music feels much less powerful than Lennon's. Personally, I think that the Lennons should have done something along the lines of their Plastic Ono Band albums, in which they were both given an entire LP's running time to express themselves. They could've even packaged both their albums together. The sentiment behind Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey was nice, but for the sake of the music, it should not have used the John-Yoko dialogue style.

Nevertheless, Lennon's talent shines brightly on the strongest numbers. Casual fans may not find Milk and Honey that rewarding, because it only has a couple of stone-cold classics. But for true Lennon fans, it's indispensable as both a window into the man and his music.

3 out of 5 stars "peak master" is not enough.......2005-09-10

As I like to say; Many, many "moons" ago I have bought this CD, expecting to enjoy listening to it digitally remastered... But...
Like I said in the title, it is not enough to use "peak master". You have to know how to use it. In case of this particular item somebody gained the track and cut the level with something like peak master on 0 dB. Personally I think that some kind of a low quality limiter was used in this case.
Dear messers (whoever is the one responsible for this), thanks to your unqualified usage of equipment or software, we have the honor of listening to another TECHNICALLY INCORRECT CD.
Epilog:
1. John's voice, as well as some instruments is clipping from time to time (you can hear light distortions).
2. On the third track "I Don't Wanna Face It", from approx. 2:42 you can hear one continuous crackling sound, which comes as a side effect of gaining the sound and then cutting it with limiter.
The same thing happened with Double Fantasy, which is not the case with Imagine and Rock 'n' Roll. Naturally I'm talking about Remastered items. It is sad, however to destroy such a wonderful music. Pay attention next time Mr. or Mrs. So and So.

2 out of 5 stars I Don't Want To Face It, no no no no.......2005-01-28

Have I ever listened to this all the way through? I suppose I have, once or twice. "Nobody Told Me" knocked me out when I first heard it. But the final creative outpouring of the Lennons ("diarhea of creativity", John called it in his final interview) doesn't hold much attraction for me anymore--and not because of Yoko, either (not in particular, anyway). It's too much personal myth-making, too self-centered. I hope to someday understand this period of their lives better than I do now. Meantime, anyone want to buy my copy of the record? Near-mint condition!

5 out of 5 stars Yoko did well 2 polish up this album after lennons death........2004-08-26

On dec 8 1980 john lennon was shot in the archway to his luxury Dakota apartments on west 72nd street N.Y city.
He and his wife Yoko ono had just put out their l8test album together called double fantasy, which featured songsabout their new family life in nyc.
Four years after lennons death Yoko ono released this "album" milk and honey, which consists of songs that lennon made as demos during the double fantasy sessions, and throught 1980.Yoko adds 7 of her own songs , six recorded after lennons death.
stepping out and sleepless night are gr8 openers for the album, both being my 2 favourite. I dont wanna face it is also a good song, but dont be scared is my least favourite yoko song on the album. Nobedy told me was a hit in 1984 but in my opinion is a bit 2 repetitive but has a good beat and decent lyrics. O sanity is way too short, but still good. Borrowed time was also released by yoko in 1984 and was a hit, but also in my opinion is too repetitive. Yokos your hands is sung in half-japanise, half english, and has gd vibres. My little flower princess is a bit too unfinished a short for me, but still ok. Yokos beautiful 'let me count the ways', is a nice tune, sung well by yoko, as is (and interpritation) of Robert Brownings grow old along with me. youre the one is well sung by yoko with gd lyrics, and she has added johns version of 'every man has a woman who loves him'. Stepping out demo is good , and so is yokos demo of im moving on, which featured in their last album, double fantasy. and finally we hav the interview with john on the day he died, in which he talks about the influence paul mccartney and the beatles and yoko had on him, and his new family life. He was shot some 8 hours l8ter.... I recently visted n.y.c., and saw where john was shot, and went to the imagine circle in central park , near where i purchased this album.
On the back of the cd, it has a picture of j and y kissing, by the lake in central park.... i went to this spot on my trip in n.y.Inside the booklet it also features pictures of john and yoko in their favourite cafe, fortuna, and yoko adds a message , which was written in 1983, just before she put out the album....

Though written in the early 1950s and never previously recorded, Woody Guthrie's "Peace Call" provides a timely conclusion to this collection of politically pointed material. Trading verses with Texas troubadour Eliza Gilkyson on the pacifist anthem are kindred spirits Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Iris DeMent. Much of the rest of the album finds Gilkyson applying her vocal warmth and buoyant melodies to lyrics that probe the darker recesses of the human condition, from the terrorism evoked within the luminous "Tender Mercies" (with Gilkyson's son and daughter joining in harmony) to the revenge by a lifelong abuse victim in "Ballad of Yvonne Johnson" to the Shaker-style hymn of mankind's folly, "Milk and Honey." While Gilkyson brings a light touch to the album's weighty social concerns, the pop buoyancy of "Wonderland" and the rock & roller's ballad "Dark Side of Town" (with its Band-like horn arrangement) extend the album's range beyond topical broadsides. --Don McLeese

Album Description

An important new release with infectious and thought-provoking tracks and guest vocal appearances by PATTI GRIFFIN, MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER, IRIS DEMENT and SLAID CLEAVES!

"Land of Milk and Honey" is a collection of songs that are decidedly socio/political in nature. From the wake-up call to awareness of the current agenda of the "neo-cons" in "Hiway 9" to the "bugle call of peace" in Woody Guthrie's previously unrecorded and timely anti-war song "Peace Call", Eliza Gilkyson spares no punches. This is music for a generation that does not want to stand idly by while losing their dream for a quality of life they hold dear.

Gilkyson once again uses a sparse, edgy organic production, with her longtime teammates, producer Mark Hallman and a cast of some of the best players Austin has to offer, to convey her firm convictions and insight into today's world. Cameos include an enthusiastic Slaid Cleaves on "Hiway 9", and Jon Dee Graham and Stephen Bruton on the soulful "Dark Side of Town", an ode to their old friend and head of Eliza's production company, Al Ragle.

Especially touching is the mother's prayer, "Tender Mercies", with background harmonies by Eliza's son Cisco and daughter Delia. Gilkyson's lush and passionate voice wraps itself around the major themes of her generation, with topics ranging from the anti war movement, abusive relationships ("Ballad of Yvonne Johnson"), personal relationships ("Separated"), and coming to terms with the folly of man ("Milk and Honey"). There is even an old song written by her late father, folksinger Terry Gilkyson, that addresses the "great food chain of life" as Eliza puts it. But through all these weighty topics, Eliza never loses sight of her sense of wonder ("Wonderland") and her hopes for humanity.

The closing song, Guthrie's "Peace Call", was discovered in an old out-of-print songbook from the Guthrie archives while Eliza was on the road with the Woody Guthrie tribute tour last summer. Rendered by a team of like-minded songstresses Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Iris Dement, the song shows a solidarity of intention that truly conveys Guthrie's message of peace in times of war.

1 out of 5 stars Still a dippy hippy.......2007-05-27

From her early Lisa Gilkyson goofiness on being a "rainbow warrior" to her pacifist dopiness, a lovely voice is wasted. The melodies are sweet, and nice to the ear. Too bad she never grew up intellectually or morally.

5 out of 5 stars Land of Milk and Honey delivers.......2007-04-11

Eliza Gilkyson has become one of my favorite artists. Lyrically she is thoughtful and thorough. She edits until it is right. She has a creative gift for melody and song construction, and her voice is true and expressive.

That said, this release does use the human condition and social commentary as a recurring theme, and this makes it my favorite CD of hers. She has something to say, and she says it here - beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry.......2007-03-20

OK. Let's say it and be done with it: Much of Eliza Glkyson's "Land of Milk and Honey" is political. Personally, I don't have any problem with that. Besides, you can say things in verse that, perhaps, you cannot say otherwise. If someone has a problem with it, listen to "Highway 9", "Tender Mercies," and especially "Milk and Honey" for the poetry or the "other" point of view. Also note that "Peace Call" was written by Woodie Guthrie. Eliza Gilkyson is a folk singer. Folk singers sing about their times; they always have. With that in mind, listen to "Ballad of Yvonne Johnson"--Better yet, read the words while listening to the lyrics. Wow. There are golden nuggets spread throughout this CD, like "Not Lonely." It is appropriate to always listen to Eliza Gilkyson with the lyrics open in front of you. The words will touch you. The words may get under your skin. The words from "Land of Milk and Honey" may burn you. If they do, the poet has done her job.

1 out of 5 stars Upper-class airhead in new career move: racist politics........2006-10-24

The cover of the CD, which provided the inspiration for the album title and song according to the liner notes, shows an industrial wasteland created by communists in the former Soviet empire. The back cover shows a defaced billboard which mocks the United States of America and its position in the world. The contradiction provided by the juxtaposition of these images is lost on Gilkyson and shows the level of sophistication one might expect from someone with only a high school education like her. The opening song, "Hiway 9," uses the melody and tempo of a children's song to support a frivolous political commentary. This includes the racist attack that, Colin Powell, one of this country's greatest public servants, is "a white man hidden in a black man's skin." Charming, especially considering that Gilkyson's family comes from the Philadelphia Social Register. Things don't get much better from there with the usual puerile lyrics (Not Lonely, Wonderland, Separated) about longing for love and lust, which are getting a little odd coming from a 50 year old woman who has had more than her share of lovers. The third cut, "Dark Side of Town," is about one of her sister's innumerable boyfriends, a substance abuser who died recently of compications from Hep C. The album is dedicated to him at end of the liner notes. Great, that's inspiring to us all Eliza! The song Tender Mercies starts off with words of sympathy for a suicide bomber who kills Jews at an Israeli shopping mall. Once again, the deeper meaning of such an act is lost to Eliza. Elsewhere, the "Milk and Honey" track manages to be pompous and trite at the same time while attempting profundity, and a children's song from her father is included. The closing Woody Guthrie tune is far and away the best thing on the album. It harks back to a time when those on the political left and right in this country could unite to fight Woody's favorite enemy: facists. Too bad Gilkyson and her ilk don't even recognize the problem today, just like the isolationists in the 30s. As she says in "Milk and Honey" - "god's children....doomed to repeat history."

5 out of 5 stars Social depth, maturity..........2006-09-08

I especially appreciate the social depth to Eliza's latest music. She started thinking and asking questions long before many of us. In one week she is playing in a historic barn in rural Minnesota - I'll be there, full of gratitude and respect. Maybe if we lstened to more music like Tender Mercies, the world would be a more tender place. Paradise Hotel is an excellent follow-up. And a plug for a related and excellent undiscovered single...Say Goodbye to That...Leslie Nuchow.

On Dennis Brown's Milk and Honey, producer Flabba Holt strips reggae's modern dance-hall sound down to the simplest programmed rhythms, usually spiced up by an elementary keyboard hook. Far from hobbling Brown, this minimalism gives his velvety baritone more room to wander. The veteran vocalist fills the cuts with a dreamy hopefulness, whether he's singing about the political struggles of his fellow Jamaicans or his romantic intentions toward a sweet "Darling." He transforms the Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye" into Jamaican lovers rock, but the album's high point is Brown's own composition, "Caress Me Girl," which boasts an infectious melody and a vocal that drags vowels across the beat in the whispery moan of a man in heat. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars BRING FORTH REGGAE, DON'T STOP!.......2007-05-09

MILK & HONEY: I'm quite surprised to see that there's no review of MILK & HONEY posted to Amazon. One of Dennis Brown's last album releases before his premature passing in 1999, I suppose some might expect the veteran singer to be past his prime here. I really don't like to say this because I think that Dennis Brown is probably the greatest all-round reggae singer Jamaica has ever produced, but he definitely did put out some subpar material in the nineties. MILK & HONEY doesn't belong in that category, though, not even close to it. With Roots Radics founder Errol Holt sharing production duties, the one and only Mr. Brown rolls back the years and gives a masterclass in straight ahead roots reggae and lovers rock. Sure, most of the material is not original - neither the rhythms nor the lyrics - but Flabba's beautifully pared-down, bass-heavy production lights the touchpaper that sends the singer's powerful voice soaring into the stratosphere.

The cover of Clive Hunt's popular MILK & HONEY is pretty much the best of the many versions recorded over the years. Equally impressive is the gorgeous, affirmative THINGS IN LIFE. WISDOM is a high grade roots rocker, and there's also an effective do-over of the classic EASY (TAKE IT EASY). Closing out the album, The Jackson 5's NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE simply melts away like butter. My top pick though is the superb NEED A LITTLE LOVING - up and coming reggae singers take note because this is how you do a proper love song: keep it simple, and put some serious soul in it! Of course, it also helps if you're blessed with one of the greatest and most instantly recognisable voices in the business!

In short, this is a great record in spite of its very recent vintage, and ample evidence that you can never underestimate a true reggae legend like Dennis Brown.

5 out of 5 stars IN THE LAND OF "MILK AND HONEY"!!!.......2004-09-14

Aromabar is the German trio of Roland Hackl, Karin Steger, and Andreas Kinzl. Their release "Milk and Honey" is as smooth and sweet as its namesake, mixing styles of two-step, house, jazz, R&B and downtempo into a mess of beautiful songs. Steger's very sparce and seductive vocals compliment the well-produced music here without sounding intrusive. She croons with an almost non-chalance on tracks like "All That Loves May Live", "Try To Believe You", "Cupid and Orlando", "Voiceless Messenger" and "2 Perfect Loves." This is a great album, and yet another underrated group--but then, ebonically speaking--Them is the kinds that I likes!

The title of this CD, "Milk & Honey," accurately describes the lilting, lyrical vocals over jazzy, syncopated beats that make the pop-tinged songs sound smooth, sweet and delicious to your ears. Their unique style and superb lyrics made this CD a very pleasant surprise!
