Perfect for a Dora fan.......2007-05-19

This CD keeps my daughter happy in the car when nothing else will. She LOVES it. It has over 40 songs, though some are very short. It can be annoying for adults, but I would rather listen to the CD than my daughter crying. Recommended for Dora fans.

Music to my daughters ears, but not mine!.......2007-05-13

I bought this CD together with Diego's Animal Jamboree. After listening to both, i'm so disappointed with the Dora CD, coz the songs are way too short and lyrics are somewhat meaningless.

Although i dislike this CD, i can't say the same for my 3YO daughter who seems to like the music. Then again, it's probably because she could relate the songs to segments of the show.

I would recommend it to all young Dora fans, but for parents, don't set your expectations too high or you'll be disappointed.

My 2 year old watches Dora everyday. She was so surprised Christmas morning when she opened her "Dora Songs" and we put it in the CD player. She sings along and dances with just about all of the 40 songs. They sound just they way they do on the show. Any child who is a Dora fan is sure to love this collection.

My two year old loves this CD. Great at keeping her busy without TV! It's adorable and has lots of music preschool children will enjoy. Recommended.

Vamonos a la Fiesta.......2006-10-24

A lot of good points, a couple of bad. First, the compilation has a great selection of songs that all fit in with the dance party theme and it makes you want to get up and dance. The songs are great, especially Oye Como Va, We Got The Beat, We Are Family, and La Bamba.

The problems with this cd is that it's retailed too expensive for a 30 minute disc, though it does have a bonus music video to show you that everyone can dance. It also has a bit too much talking on it. Understandably, this is targeted at preschoolers and the shouted encouragement to get up and dance or sing is good, but sometimes tend to overtake the music.

The real only major fault is the tone of Dora's singing. Shrill, thin, a squeaky grating tone that is quite irritating.

However, thumbs up to Boots' voice - lovely! Backpack sings quite well also. Dora's voice is nails on the chalkboard....

FIESTA AT HOME.......2006-07-10

My Daughter Loves this CD! And it is truly brilliant to have a CD of music that she loves from start to finish (no need to skip songs) and all the while I don't mind hearing it either - they are classic party tunes rather than over the top kids songs that get annoying.
A wonderful album for any little dancer!

I was also looking for "jungle" music for a kids party and this was perfect -- lots of loud roars and very active. The tracks (one for each animal) are very short but the kids liked the constant switching to a new animal.

A Great First Buy on Ralph Vaughan Williams........2007-06-05

Up until recently, I was only vaguely familiar with the music of British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. After reading the reviews and noticing the lower than usual price for this set, I thought I'd give it a listen. I'm definitely glad I did as this is some very beautiful music indeed.
All nine of Vaughan William's symphonies are included here along with four bonus pieces, the Concerto Accademico for Violin, the Bass Tuba Concerto, "Three Portraits from the England of Elizabeth" and the overture for the stage play "The Wasps".
Conductor Andre Previn definitely brings these works to life in a mighty way. The "Sea Symphony" is a real standout with its beautiful choral arrangements and orchestrations. Other standouts are the "Pastoral" third symphony and the dramatic Stravinsky-esque fourth symphony.
Indeed, all of the music here is something special and I'm very satisfied to have this set as my introduction to the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Like other reviewers have stated here, this is definitely a must-have collection and I can't think of a better way to start a Vaughan Williams library than with this.

A small footnote: After listening to the first movement of "A Sea Symphony", it may be quite possible that John Lennon sampled a small section of it for "Revolution 9" on the Beatles' White Album. The section in question occurs roughly 12 minutes into the first movement. It's very brief but it immediately stuck out once it was heard.

Vaughan Williams' wonderful music at last..........2007-04-21

Ralph Vaughan Williams was in my opinion one of the very greatest composers of music. Never content with what he had just written, but nevertheless staunch in his principles, over his lifetime he created a series of amazingly vital and original pieces. I could write many pages about these works, so will just say a little about my favorite of all, the incredible Symphony No 8 in D minor. Written at the extraordinary age of 86, the sheer musical inventiveness of this truly unbelievable piece is without equal and I include here all the "great" classical composers such as Beethoven, Brahms and the like. The first movement "Variations in search of a theme" is serious, thought-provoking and modern, yet unmistakably RVW. Its one of the most original first movements ever written ( owing nothing whatsoever to the classical tradition) and though asking more questions than it answers, is a movement even if you have never listened to any of RVWs music before demands attention and absolutely requires you to listen more. The second movement "Cavatina" is one of the most ghostly-beautiful slow movements ever written. The only thing I can really compare it with is RVWs own "The Lark Ascending" though for me this is a far more complex and challenging piece. I have listened to Barber's famous " Adagio for Strings", written at about the same time as this,and for me, this is an even greater and more moving piece - well Barber hadn't written the so-called "Pastoral" Symphony for practice had he ? The third movement is a typically gruff RVW scherzo. I can just see the old geezer galumphing round his garden complaining about his musicians, modern taxation, life in general... It's really funny and whenever can you say that of Mozart, Beethoven , Brahms and company...?The fourth movement is is ...how on earth do you describe this absolutely extraordinary finale. Part village band, part religious apotheosis, this is music truly not of the everyday earth which we inhabit, but something much more glorious, more astonishing... In this movement RVW uses just about every musical instrument known to man - he must have had enormous fun composing it... but the first entry of the celeste is the moment you all need to listen for.

André Previn has chosen some of the very finest of RVWs works to record on this set and for me this is his greatest testament as a conductor. His sheer (and somewhat amazing in itself as a jazz musician) love for RVWs music comes out tops here. A great recording and an absolutely tremendous bargain.

Previn & Vaughan Williams: An Excellent Coupling.......2007-01-10

I have some of these recordings on RCA Red Seal LPs from the late 1960's. I think it is one the best of three symphony cycles in my possession. The other two are Colin Davis/Sibelius and Herbert Blomstedt/Nielsen. Some of my RVW LPs are Adrian Boult and some are Andre Previn. I prefer Previn. Previn really digs into this music. My three favorites: #2 (London), #3 (Pastoral) and #5. It gives me goose bumps being able to listen to them without rice krispies in the background. Kudos to RCA for re-releasing these gems.

Can't get any better.......2004-07-19

If you've ever thought of getting all of the RVW symphonies but haven't, because of cost or what not, there are no more excuses. This is the best set ever. Previn and the LSO had a magical relationship 30 years ago, and no one has ever done these symphonies better. If you find some of them tough nuts to crack, don't worry; RVW isn't easy music, but it is well worth it. It's not supposed to be simple. The only caveat: analog sound. Now RCA was capable of great sound in the 1970's, and the sound is frankly better than the newer RCA series with Slatkin. But if superb digital sound is paramount, you won't go wrong with Handley's set with Liverpool. It's another top notch cycle. Still, I rate Previn tops in this music. RCA is to be commended for releasing this set, as well as the others in the series...check them out!

Comprehensive and Impressive Collection.......2004-04-07

Listen to the bold beginning of Ralph Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony, and you've captured the essence of VW at his best. This is the first of 9 symphonies by a composer who is surely England's greatest Symphonist. His essays in the form span the first half of the twentieth century, but include few of its radical elements. Vaughan Williams was a traditionalist throughout, and surely it was that conservative outlook that drew him to the symphonic form in the first place.

Listening to his second symphony, A London Symphony, one hears typical Vaughan Williams-almost entirely melodic in its conception, with lots of diatonic, modal or pentatonic writing, and a touch of chromatic harmony to flavour the melody. It's beautiful, and the music spans a wide emotional gamut from intense introspection to joyous celebration. Only in the 4th Symphony does VW really open himself to a more contrapuntal and dissonant style, and the consequence is that the composition becomes quite reminiscent of Prokofiev or Schostakovich, the two other great Symphonists of the time. Following the 5th Symphony, however, I feel that VW's artistic output suffers. The later pieces, with the exception of the 7th Symphony, Sinfonia Antarctica-based on music he'd composed for the film Scott of the Antarctic--lack the vigor and excitement of the earlier works. They're more introspective, perhaps as befits an older composer, but they don't speak to me as strongly as, say, the later symphonies of Mahler or Schostakovich. Perhaps it is that VW was resistant to change in his basic musical outlook, but by the 1950's, the diatonic/pentatonic ideas he frequented had become increasingly irrelevant. That VW was brilliant and a master craftsman is unquestionable, but he seemed to need new fuel for his compositional fires and was unwilling to consider the atonality of Schoenberg and his followers, the rhythmic vitality of Stravinsky and Bartok, or even the orchestral colours and dramatic juxtapositions of Gustav Mahler. There are still many moments of brilliance, but as a whole the later works move me less.

All of the performances by Andre Previn and the London symphony Orchestra are superb-no one plays this music better. With 9 Symphonies and four other orchestral works-the Concerto Accademico, the Tuba Concerto, the Wasps Overture, and Three Portraits from The England of Elisabeth-this collection is packed with value, and I can scarcely do it justice in the limited room I have. While the Concerto Accademico seems aptly titled and not terribly engaging, the Three Portraits are a gem of VW's work for television. Its worth the price for the first two symphonies and the Sinfonia Antarctica alone, everything else is just gravy--or perhaps I should say, baked beans on toast! All in all, a terrific deal.

Except for a handful of titles, the Nonesuch Explorer imprint has languished in undeserved oblivion for more than 20 years, so the gradual reissue of the entire series on CD constitutes an event of unparalleled importance. The present album was recorded by Paul Berliner and reveals the mbira, a simple thumb piano made of metal keys attached to a board, as an instrument capable of infinite possibilities. In the hands of a master player, it creates hypnotic, repetitive webs of melody, usually accompanied by shifting vocal patterns and hissing hosho shakers. The late Dr. Dumisani Abraham Maraire, a world-renowned performer and educator, is heard with his brother Nkosana Arthur Maraire on voice and percussion, plus Sukutai Laura Choira, a huge-voiced powerhouse of a female singer. Their energized austerity and interwoven triple rhythms often recall the works of Philip Glass and other classical minimalists, but in a more primal, outwardly directed incarnation. --Christina Roden

There are several excellent Shona Mbira recordings in the Nonesuch Explorer catalog, but if you had to pick just one, this is the one to get. The ensembles play (and sing!) with an exuberance that makes this disc an extraordinarily satisfying, enjoyable listen. The rich, melodic vocal content and intriguing percussion enhance the soothing, undulating quality of the mbira. The selections found on this album vary widely in terms of tempo, dynamics, instrumentation and vocal style, making this a title with enormous replay value. This is high art; five stars are simply not enough!

One of my favorite albums.......2007-06-17

I owned this work on vinyl long ago and recently became reacquainted with it on CD. Although many people might find the sound of the shakuhachi flute piercing and off-putting, I find that listening to this album evokes an intense emotional response. I'm not an especially spiritual or maudlin type, but this music is remarkable in its ability to transport me. Hope it does the same for you.

The shakuhachi artist on this CD is Yamaguchi Goro.......2007-04-20

Although the artist attribution on this page is Kochachiro Miyata, a great shakuhachi master musician, these recordings are actually by the late Yamaguchi Goro, a musician and master instrumentalist whose importance in traditional Japanese shakuhachi music in the 20th century cannot be overstated.

This is the first CD issue of the legendary recordings which comprised this LP version of Nonesuch's Explorer series of the late 1960/early 70s. Album Description

Bali's most popular ensemble is still the large gamelan gong, consisting of 25 to 30 musicians. The principal melody instruments are metallophones, xylophone-like instruments with bronze keys. Sets of small, tuned gong kettles provide melodic ornaments, while the penetrating bass tones of great gongs punctuate larger phrases. Clashing cymbals add to the overall glitter. A flute or stringed instrument sweetens the melody. The entire structure is supported by two drummers, who create the crucial rhythmic underpinning. The kecak is uniquely Balinese. The rhythmic interlocking "tjak-tjak-tjak-tjak," chanted by a large group of male voices, originated as the accompaniment to an ancient trance dance. It is a performance of the Ramayana, where the monkey hordes come to the aid of King Rama in his battle with the evil King Rawana. The 80 members of the Sekaha Ganda Sari are heard in this kecak performance.

Unbelievable music.......2006-10-05

I owned this recording on the original LP and am very impressed with the remastering done here. The kecak is much cleaner and more distinct without losing any of its power. Those who have not heard this music, especially the Ramayana monkey chant, are in a for a huge treat.

When this set--part of the Nonesuch Explorer Series--was first released, Hamza El Din had already headlined at the Newport Folk Festival and Woodstock and released an album on the Vanguard label. But this was the one that put him on the map, bringing his oud (Arab lute,) tar (an ancient frame drum), and plaintive vocals to a much wider audience. Born in 1929, El Din has dedicated his life to the music of his ancestral homeland of Nubia, much of which now lies underwater in the shadow of the Aswan Dam. The title track, a 21-minute meditation based on the creaking, rhythmic sounds of a wooden water wheel, later became his signature work. Despite the unadorned simplicity of his forces, El Din evokes centuries of laboring agrarian workers. He later re-recorded the piece several times, including a version with the Kronos Quartet, but he has never quite duplicated the tidal ebb-and-flow of the original performance. --Christina Roden

in an attempt to expand my musical horizions, i have been buying cds in the Explorer Series. This is one of my favorites. It is very mellow and very powerful, it comes highly recommended.

Hard to put your finger on........2002-10-31

After hearing a review of the Explorer series on NPR, I decided to look at the CDs and this is the one I chose to order. I was not disappointed. It is a very mellow CD that is quite unlike anything else in my collection. Listening to it is almost like meditating...a religious experience.

Nubia Revisted.......2002-10-15

This recently re-released CD, formerly available under the title "Escalay: the Water Wheel" features three of Hamza el-Din's greatest performances. Drawing firmly upon his lively and exotic Nubian background, Hamza weaves it together with his natural gift for playing the oud (an istrument of Arab rather than Nubian origin). This CD is unlike anything you have ever heard before. Although there are many similarities with other Middle Eastern and African styles (due to shared history and cultures from Egypt to Ethiopia) it is still unique and beautiful. Check it out.
