Essential Afrobeat

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Afrobeat is the energetic, funk-fuelled, drum-led sound that exploded in the ‘70s and refuses to go away. Initially created by Fela Kuti and his Africa 70 band, the sound owes much to funk and soul and in particular James Brown’s prolific early ‘70s funky workouts with The J.B.’s.

Dele Sosimi, the compiler for Essential Afrobeat, worked with Fela Kuti as his musical director for a period of time. He now creates music all over the world, spreading the Afrobeat message. He has included classic tracks from all the essential Afrobeat players, including Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti, Tony Allen, Orlando Julius, Hugh Masekela, Salif Keita, plus more modern takes on the genre from Fatboy Slim, DJ Food, MAW, and !KNUF.
