Titan were huge in their native Mexico at the start of 2000 but little known elsewhere. Blending a mixture of horn-driven acid-jazz with the funkier end of big beat, Elevator is a kaleidoscopic foot-tapper just right for summer days and tequila-fueled nights. With production credits that include Craig Borrell and Ross Harris (Dust Brothers, Beck) as well as Michael Franti (Disposable Heroes), these are no ordinary grooves. Opener "1, 2, 3, 4" is B-52s for the chemical generation, while "Corazon" combines squelchy Hammond organs, vocals reminiscent of Sergio Mendes's "Brasil '66," and the head-nodding spirit of the Wiseguys onto one track. The album also includes Titan's signature piece, an inspired interpretation of the theme to the '70s cop show Starsky & Hutch. "Cum on Feel the Noize" is a more literal cover, but elsewhere on this retro-heavy collection, the ghost of Huggy Bear looms large and proud. --Paul Tierney

Hot Hot Heat hail from Victoria, B.C., a town best known for imitating the queen's England in the service of tourism. But never fear: the high teas and manicured gardens are all well and good, this band knows that bad manners are what rock is all about. Case in point, the song "Goodnight Goodnight," in which a former girlfriend learns "you're embarrassing me, you're embarrassing you...this isn't goodnight, this is goodbye." There's nothing quite so much fun as a good dis song, and the Heat keeps the fun going on their newest album, Elevator. Virtually every track on the CD is short and sweet with plenty of energetic, poppy goodness. Standouts include "Ladies and Gentleman" (another semiburn: "everybody's got the same story--we never wanted him here, he showed up anyway."), "Middle of Nowhere," "Soldier in a Box"--well, I'll stop before I list them all. --Leah Weathersby

Album Description

Hot Hot Heat has scorched the college charts and warmed the hearts of critics with its most recent pair of indie albums. Now Canada's top Modern Rock outfit makes its major-label debut with Elevator, produced by Dave Sardy. With Elevator, Hot Hot Heat is on its way to the top with an album that, keeping with superstition, purposefully has no 13th track.

4 out of 5 stars better than the first..........2006-10-31

Hot Hot Heat is one of the few new bands to pique my interest. Their first release was decent, but "Elevator" is even better. Great tunes, drums and guitars - and, of course, Steve Bays' yelping vocals. There's only three songs I really don't care for - "Pickin' It Up", "Soldier In A Box" and "Shame On You". Looking forward to the next CD!

5 out of 5 stars The higher you go! .......2006-07-28

Energy=Hot Hot Heat! this album is full of it, though not just in the album as well as on the stage these four performers pour their hearts out to you and sweat as the play their instruments. With catchy melodies thougout the album, though fast that you have to look at the lyrics to see what exactly he says, you'll be sure to enjoy this alternative' dance album that makes any kid that thinks he/she is to cool to dance, Dance!!, that is all Hot Hot Heat makes you want to dance, besides that, they also have other songs like "elevator" and "jingle jangle" to tone down the album. This whole album comes from all of the emotions of a gone band member, but newly found one, being a great addition, and being in love. So to dance and sing get this album.

5 out of 5 stars elevator.......2006-07-15

Elevator is indeed a good album, but I admit it does lack in some areas. The standout songs are Running Out Of Time, Goodnight Goodnight, Island of the Honest Man, Middle of Nowhere, and Shame on You. This album, although sounding like a lot of familiar rock, has this certian edge that only Hot Hot Heat has. But, you have to remember, this was made during a hard period for the band--when a former member left. Overall, though, I do reccomend buying it.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-07-10

This album is amazing. I got into them after hearing one of their songs, then buying the album. At first I thought they kind of sounded like the Beatles. They have kind of an older sound. 60s to 80s.
I recommend listening to "soldier in a box", "island of the honest man", and definitely "middle of nowhere".

5 out of 5 stars elevator review.......2006-07-06

As if Make Up The Breakdown wasn't good enough already, Hot Hot Heat's follow up to it is just as amazing. All the songs are really catchy, with witty lyrics and great choruses. They start the album off with "Running out of Time" a totally high energy and incredibly fun song. For a change of pace, "Jingle Jangle" and "Elevator" are a little slower. And all the other songs like "You Owe Me an IOU", "Island of the Honest Man", and "Goodnight, Goodnight" are all really fun to dance to. Great album!

5 out of 5 stars C'mon Feel The Noise.......2002-12-03

White hot guitars, great samples, and a sound that goes from surf to funk by way of Tijuana and 70s cheese-rock while the beats crush you to a pulp. Plus almost nobody knows about them. I would love to see them live.

4 out of 5 stars The Future.......2002-07-19

This album is great, after years of working in the undergorund area doing live-gigs, they decide to release an album, it has so many musical fusions It' just way too cool... It's a shame they haven't released a new one, don't know if they will since one of the members of the band is currently (jul/2002) working with a band called "Moderato", don't know what the future has in store for this band, but this CD is a proof of what could have been a great career for an excelent band.

4 out of 5 stars Serious sounds of mexican electronica.......2002-04-04

I had the feeling that the group was carefully keeping an eye and ear on each and everyone of the tracks to make sure not to sound or make something that is already done, but, Plastilina Mosh was already there. The cd is fun to listen to and it deserves for you to give a try. I'm sure it will become one of favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Promete, pero se queda corto.......2002-02-20

3 out of 5 stars Good Safe Music........2002-02-01

Staraight out of Mexico City's thriving club scene come the hugely popular Titan. You mostly cannot tell form their music that they are Mexican except from a few vocal samples here and there. Their music is pretty undark and well produced but i feel that its all been done before. Everything seems to be done by the book. Please dont get me wrong, this is not a bad cd...but i am afraid i only will be able to like it i will never love it. That being said this Cd does have its high points...."1 2 3 4" is a great track whth superfast sufer rock styled beats and catchy guitar samples. "Corazon" is another great track with a chorus that is quiet addictive...in fact this track is also on the soundtrack to "Amores Perros" (hope i spelt that right)..a Mexican film about underground dog fighting..very very cool film, watch it if you can get your hands on it. "Battle Love" is a fast pace big beat extravangaza ..the most interesting part about this tarck is the vocal sample that they used..its from a cheezy 80's indian bubblegum film. Thas is an excillent touch and that atleast for me is the high point of hte CD. Rest of the CD flows pretty smooth whithout any dissapointing moments but there are no extactic moments either. Titan have tried to capture the beauty of retro style which they have been pretty much successful in doing butin the process have pushed their music into the generic rather than the name brand section. This Cd is a great party Cd but i wont recomend for any other porpose. Plastillina Mosh (also form mexcico) make similar styled music but they are of a slightly higher order....check them out.

Product Description

The long awaited freshman solo from one of the Pacific Northwest’s most gifted MC’s. Many know Othello from the Lojique release, “Language Arts” that debuted on Syntax in 2002. Some of you even remember him on his first label recording on the Sackcloth Fashion produced Fashion Expo project, where the song he was on made it all the way to the big screen in, “It Runs In The Family” starring Michael Douglas. Or maybe it was his appearances on Acts29, Night Owls, and even John Rueben’s second album that caught your attention. Either way this album has a soulful, jazzy, feel good hip hop vibe the way hip hop should sound! RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE: Lightheaded, Lojique, RedCloud, MG! The Visionary, Mos Def.

5 out of 5 stars Double O is no joke.......2006-06-12

I found out about Othello while actually listening to his fellow group member Braille. I then found out Braille was in a group with Othello and Ohmega Watts and gave their group album a clear listen and literally could not beleive how incredible it was. Then I respected each induvidual artist and from begining to end "Elevator Music" is indeed unbeleivable. Featuring present group members and members from his old group "Lojique," this CD is a must buy. Also if you enjoy Othello, it is almost 100% positive you will enjoy the group Lightheaded and each solo artist as well. Good listening. Peace yall.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Release.......2006-01-13

Gotta admit - I love the last review - the visual is awesome... Mona Lisa with gold chains over Sean John, rayban shades and a cap to the side! :) On that note, Jaffa is David Kakon, a very talented keyboardist/piano player from Canada. This release is actually a bit older now since it was released back in 2000 off of the Stereo Deluxe label out of Germany (think Mo Horizons or the "Bassic Instinct" compilations series). Knowing the label from that time, it fit in pretty well with their style or even Om's music (King Kooba, Soulstice, etc.)

Most recognizeable on this one is "Elevator". It's a cut that's been around for quite a while now, from Brazilectro to casual lounges, and it's been remixed and cut up dozens of times by some of the best electronica and nu-jazz. It has neat keys and a very reminiscent vibe that makes it a cross cultural success. Another popular track here is "Sneakin'". Personally, I dig the original that's sans the Erika Baduesque vocals singing Billie Holiday's classic track. The beat on it's fresh and the keys give the song a real nightlife feel. But those are the only cuts that snatched my attention. The album does have a cool, sexy feel to it but joking aside there is a point to what someone else said about the useless vocal samples in this - they just weren't really necessary and the cuts would've been better served without them. But I bump up the rating a bit because you do have both versions of "Sneakin'" here two different remixes to "Elevator", as interpreted by Fila Brazilia and the Herbaliser.

I would recommend this to anyone that's a fan of the Stereo Deluxe sound from 1999-2001. But it wasn't an album that I could play without fast-forwarding and admittedly, of the 11 tracks, there were really only 8 unique songs; the top two tracks are available on far superior compilations. In fact, the versions of "Elevator" I prefer is the jazzed up remix by Nicola Conte found on "Get Into the Martinin Mood" and "Feeling Good vl 1" and the live inspired one found on Brazilectro 2. I've had this one for quite a while now but found it tough to review mainly because of those reasons. Still, it's a solid release. If you're a fan of King Kooba's "Newfoundfunk", Moodorama's work, Mo Horizon's "Come Touch the Sun", you'll probably dig this and vice versa.

1 out of 5 stars Why the silly vocals?.......2005-04-13

The music is very good. Too bad it is ruined by intermittent generic spoken vocal nonsense, e.g., "We gonna have a good time!!" and "In the beginning, the player plays...", yadda yadda. Why?? Upon hearing these, are we supposed to be so overcome with euphoria such that we are compelled to respond out loud with "Word!" and "Yeah, baby!"? The music is, in my opinion, good enough to stand by itself without the overly enthusiastic, oh-so-groovy, feel-good (read: gay) vocal pronouncements mixed in, but alas, the music is ruined. Imagine if van Gogh painted the Mona Lisa, then added a big hunk of 'bling' dangling around her neck.

5 out of 5 stars Up and Coming.......2001-08-13

Jaffa is a young and upcoming artist that I sincerly hopes gets the recognition, press and fame he deserves. "Elevator" is a sweet album. Yes, like others have stated it does compare to Thievery Corporation and I would even include Slide Five (I wish they never broke up). Jaffa takes you on a wonderful lounge trip that may leave you feeling very relaxed and free. Most of the time there are a few "stand out" tracks on an album that make you decide if the album is worth picking up or not. Even though this is his first album and I run into very few people that have heard of him, I recommend this album to everyone! You won't be disappointed...trust me.

3 out of 5 stars Softcore muzac.......2001-08-13

Somewhere between mid tempo and down tempo Jaffa has found an audience for his airy sythns that go on without hardly any attention being given to the music. His use of organ and keyboards, coupled with programmed music is there, lingering and drifting off on puffy clouds, like a ballon in the sky going straight up but getting nowhere. This is music for a beautiful day, the kind that doesn't really exist except in the movies. A real beautiful day is constantly in flux, even a tranquil park has it's own chaos with children yelling and cars driving by. The textures are void of any feeling, just barely audible forays into slightly changing patterns never stirring far off the safe path. This is a walk through the park with eyes straight ahead not noticing one's surroundings. It is pleasant music for Jaffa's utopian vision where droning music is the national anthem. Do we really need three versions of the title track? If they were dramatically different I'd say yes, otherwise it sounds like material being streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeched. Don't get me wrong this isn't a bad CD it just isn't that good. "Lazywalker" begins to groove but eventually becomes lost in a sea of banality, too bad as it starts out fresh drawing interest from the gravely voiced sample. The CD has it's moments of creativity, like the oddly misplaced "Star67" with it's funny phone conversation("Is your wife there?") and the vocalized("God bless the child")version of "Sneakin." I say oddly misplaced because it doesn't fit into the light airy themes on the other tracks. Actually I preferred these two tracks to others because they draw a reaction as oppossed to a passive listening experience. I'd recommend this CD for a quite starless night when music is inconsequential, along with a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

5 out of 5 stars music for chilling out.......2001-06-05

i dont care about the comparisons to other groups [theivery corp, K&D, etc..] I have heard a LOT of electronic lounge and downbeat, and this, simply put, is one of the most colorful selections of the type. the melodies are thick and the basslines are dope. the album [sans the 3 remixes at the end] has a beautiful arc that takes the listener on a sexy journey.

5 out of 5 stars Snappy Songs.......2007-01-09

We were lucky enough to see Rick Charette perform this summer and were suprised at how appealing his American style songs were to our UK style 4 year old.
This CD has loads of catchy tunes with easy words that will get you singing along in no time.
A great compilation!

5 out of 5 stars Kids love it!.......2006-08-03

One of the great collections from Rick Charette. Very fun and engaging. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-07-10

I am a 44 year old Grandma of a wonderful 2 year old...My son grew up on Rick Charette in Maine...and now I am buying this CD for his son. Ricks music is ageless and wonderful and I can't wait to see my 25 year olds face when I pop this in for his son to hear. Generation after generation Rick Charette will live on in our family.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Kids Songs.......2002-06-26

I am now 16 years old and a junior in highschool and I live in New Hampshire, and I grew up listening to Rick Charette, I guess Im missing the little kidness in me so I decided to search out the tapes and an old fashioned cassette player and tonight Ive listened to 4 rick charette tapes. In 1992 I got the privilage of seeing Rick Charette in concert. Not only seeing him, meeting him, and DANCING ON STAGE WITH HIM because my Dad played "Al The ALligator". Just thought Id share how kewl and awesome he is. PS- Sadly I still remember EVERY word!

5 out of 5 stars Truly wonderful children's music!.......2000-03-15

I grew up in Rick's hometown of Windham, Maine and had the pleasure of knowing he and his family well. He is a remarkable man and great musician. He really loves children and is a great role-model. I had all of his tapes when I was young and still enjoy them. Rick's music is one of the things from my childhood that I have the fondest of memories of. I HIGHLY reccomend his cd's for all children!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Far from essential.......2004-05-10

This cd is an ok debut, but there isn't enough pzazz! They should try and be a little more spontaious and solo, and trade with each other. Overall the music would qualify as easy listenin' lounge, and in it's own cheezy way, it is wahat is promised in the title of teh album. Skip this one, and try thier 2nd album, if they ever release one.

2 out of 5 stars The rhythm, and the swinging feel..........2003-12-02

I feel guilty enough giving this CD 2 stars because I don't want to discourage the artists! I'm trying to be as diplomatic as possible. The things I enjoy most about the music are the innovative percussion, long 5-7 minute compositions, abstract structures, and style variability. Their attempts at being soulful have succeeded.

It's normal that the percussion should be so good, as Roland Appel, a founding member of Fauna Flash and producer of the "New Sounds of Jazz" series, must have been a percussionist in his previous life. I wish more DJs could have as high of an appreciation of quality percussion as Mr. Appel does.

However, like the "New Sounds in Jazz" volumes, Fauna Flash's "Fusion" (+ remixes), as well as Truby Trio's previous "DJ Kicks", this CD just does not have enough great moments (in my honest personal opinion) that would allow me to give it, say 3 stars.

Don't get me wrong, when the T-Trio is on, it's really on. They've produced some really great tracks here: Universal Love, Runnin', Alegre 2003, Make a Move, Bad Luck, to name my favorites. However, the rest of the CD makes a huge drop-off in quality from the above-mentioned tracks. I feel that the remainder is quite an inferior product and can be quite unlistenable and boring for me, although still better than a lot of garbage out there.

While "The Rhythm" (Parts 1 + 2) contains the best sample on the entire CD, it's too bad that TT couldn't do more with it than just an intro and outro. The sample of the guy's voice repeating the lines (see title of my review) is so annoying.

But, seeing that some of the tracks are quite excellent and that no one can deny the talent of these guys, I just find my favorite tracks and make my own compilation. That's what I've done with the "New Sounds" series, as well as the previous Fauna Flash material. The result is 175 minutes across 3 CDs of great music that people love when I play it at my private parties.

My advice to Truby Trio would be to keep putting out music, and try to find an executive producer that could help with many of the rough spots. The talent is there, but it's not clicking yet for a larger audience. The Compost label is a great start, though.

Finally, I'm hoping for a new Fauna Flash CD - How about something produced outside of the confines of Munich this time, like Berlin, Paris, or Amsterdam? Get some fresh air.

What a great album. Should you be feeling low or angry pop this in and it shout cheer you up. The main theme here is Latin bossanova, while "A Festa" adds a junglish beat. "Bad luck" (featuring Joseph Malik) is a chill soulful tune with the lyric "Bad luck be my only friend, knew him since ever I was 10, told me I supposed to be, blind muthaf*cka now I can see" I reccommend this album to everyone:)

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Stormer!!.......2003-06-14

Nothing short of astonishing, this has got to be one of the top artist debut's of the year!! Lots of different flavors, from latinesque dancefloor workouts, to more dubbed out - head nod inducing steppers, this is gonna be in my crate for a long, long time!! Favourite track at the moment is the apparently now classic - "A Go-Go." Highly recommended!! Truby Trio running 'tings in 2003!!!

4 out of 5 stars Took me back.......2007-01-06

I remember eagerly staying awake for the premier of this series when I was nine and being glued to the screen. This CD awoke lots of memories, all of them good. It's got me humming the old tunes all over again.

The CD took a small hit in my view as I actually prefer the original version of the opening them to the slightly different arrangement found here, but the rest of the tracks are more than fine. If you at all like the original version of Galactica, I think you would find it hard to go wrong with this.

3 out of 5 stars Great Score, But Bad Remaster.......2005-09-02

I would give 5 stars for excellent music, but have to give only 3 stars for a terrible remaster. It sounds like someone turned the Treble all the way up and turned the Bass down to zero! It has a very thin, metalic sound to it. Also, the reverb is way over done, as the other reviewers have mentioned. It's to the point where things are so blended together that you can't distinguish the individual instruments. My original vinyl record is better sound quality then this (if you overlook the clicks or pops). I would recommend the June 29, 1999 re-recording with Stu and the Royal Orchestra over this one. On the re-recording the horns blast through loud and clear and the bass blows you out of your seat. You can hear every instrument very clearly as if you are sitting right in front of the orchestra. The music is fantastic and I think the Battlestar Galactica theme is one of the best ever written. Also, the Exploration theme and Base Star (Imperious Leader) theme are amazing.

4 out of 5 stars At last...........2005-06-10

It's strange-- just a few days ago, I was rifing through some old stuff from my childhood (old toys, a pile of very old Starlog Magazines)and noticed an ad in a Starlog for this in its old LP format, back when the show was actually on-air. I remember being a little kid and wishing I could send in for it.

Well, fast forward to yesterday, and I'm rifing through various cd soundtracks in my local cd/dvd wherehouse/bonanza/free-for-all store, and there it was. And by God, it was in cd format! And yes, it was ORIGINAL! Not re-performed by some Scottish Orchestra a couple of years ago! Immediately, it was in my greedy hands, helplessly going along with me to my home.

First off, this cd has liner notes. It's not just flimsy repros of the front and back of the old LP. Glen Larson, Stu Phillips, and Richard Hatch all pitch in with recollections about the show, with Phillips's being the most memorable (John Williams coming by to listen to the theme to see if any Star Wars was in there, in case Lucasfilm wanted to sue).

The sound quality is great, no hiss or tininess. The only gripe I have is that the strings sound a little too "smooth." Don't know if that makes sense, but they sound a little too reverbed, concert-hallish. But hey, if that's all I can come up with to complain, then this is a winner!

Relive the memories, in a format that you can play again and again!

5 out of 5 stars Twenty-six years on, it still stirs the blood!.......2004-11-22

Some people may think of Battlestar Galactica as a hokey show that sums up the era of disco, I don't happen to be one of them however!

One thing most people can agree on whether they be a fan or not, is that the theme to Battlestar Galactica is one of the most memorable of TV themes!

Here you get the pieces that went with the first episode that was broadcast - Saga of a Star World, but many of the themes pop up again further along in the series.

The score is a big score for TV, played by the LA Philharmonic no less, and in my humble opinion, composer Stu Phillips's finest work.

5 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack.......2004-08-10

If I was asked who has the best soundtrack,Galactica or Star Wars,it would be a tie.I especially like the track Red Nova on the Galactica soundtrack.I listen to samples of the new Galactica soundtrack and so far so good. There is a question being asked about the rivalry between the two sci-fi epics of Galactica and Star Wars. When it comes to the music, both are good. Now if George Lucas could come up with better material of what he used in the Phantom Menance and Attack of the Clones and The space battles between the Colinial Empire and the Cylons increases in the future episodes.

Album Description

The Mood Elevator's second album, Married Alive, sounds a lot like a Brendan Benson record. Maybe that's because the dude is all over the record. He's on drums, co-writes a bunch of songs, does background vocals, plays guitar, and produces the album. He and Mood Elevator's main man, Chris Plum, were pals in high school, and Plum is a member of Benson's backing band, the Wellfed Boys. As are all the members of the Mood Elevator. On Married Alive they mine the same rich rock territory that Benson does: '70s power pop, glam rock, new wave, and hard rock with lots of loud guitars married to big hooks involving vocal harmonies, lots of inventive arrangements, and lots of care in the sound of the record. The sound they get is live, powerful, hard-rocking, and reminiscent of the Romantics if they were smarter and Todd Rundgren if he were dumber. The overall lyrical theme of the record can be summed up by the large print in the liner notes: love breaks your heart are the words, and songs like the rocked-out "Boycott," the angular "Guilty," and the pounding "Best Kept Secret" detail the breaking of Plum's heart, heartbreakingly no less. Modern power pop wouldn't have the somewhat deserved reputation of being a pretty lame impersonation of the past if all the records were as good as this one. Fans of Benson should get Married Alive ASAP, while fans of pop full of power, brains, and hooks shouldn't be too far behind. — Tim Sendra

Just heard "Boycott" on Live 365 Power Pop Radio. Wow. I don't know if they're better than that song, but Jebus, that song is bad. It took a few years offa my life expectancy.

Just.... bad.

4 out of 5 stars Detroit's "Best Kept Secret".......2003-09-30

Second release from Detoit's Mood Elevator. Shying away from The Motor City's tired Garage sound. This record is full of catchy Power-Pop-Rock that brings to mind some of the 70's best sounds (Cheap Trick, Big Star, The Records).

Practically a concept album on Romance and Marriage , this record makes you want to run wild looking for chicks one moment and settle down for a quiet evening with your best girl the next.

Highlights include "Best Kept Secret", "Beginner's Luck, "Long Hard Look".

5 out of 5 stars Three more weeks........2004-09-27

I love this album. The songs are catchy, smart and beautifully written (recalling Sebadoh or Nick Drake at times), and an overall vibe prevails that's hard to explain...an ethereal, almost nostalgic sadness that's completely overwhelming. Falling asleep to this record is a beautiful and frightening experience. Find a copy if you can.

5 out of 5 stars Like Nothing Else.......2002-05-24

Elevator's music is so beautiful, dramatic, catchy, addictive, and strange that it's almost unbelievable that more people don't know about them. "Elevator Parts 1-3" is a compilation of the first two elevator albums, plus some newer material. Each song is wildly different from the last, with sounds that range from fuzzed out guitar to perfect casio pop, but words fail to describe the feeling of listening to them. Get this album and listen to the best band no one knows about.
