Amazon.com essential recording

With popcorn acoustic guitars, trampoline fiddles, bumper-car bass lines, and caramel-coated sax, the Dave Matthews Band's major-label debut is like an evening at the fair. "The Best of What's Around" and "What Would You Say" swirl like the amusement-park ride on the album's cover, sweeping the exhilarated and lightheaded listener higher as the ride spins faster. "Satellite" glides breezily like the prettiest horse on the carousel, "Ants Marching" runs around hitting the bell with the sledgehammer and winning the largest stuffed animals at the target-range booths, and "Lover Lay Down" is the quietest moment on the disc--like the sun setting on a baby's sleeping, snow-cone-stained face collapsed on her daddy's shoulder. --Beth Massa

Vibrant, broadly accessible adult rock that features soaraway, acoustic-based melodies, intriguing fusion overtones (check the sax/violin interplay on "Dancing Nancies" and "Warehouse") and a vocalist as cool and poised as Sting. Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Words.......2007-06-01

This is the one cd that i can say is uttely amazing. No cd has had an effect on me like Dave matthews band's under the table and dreaming. Do not listen to the person before me who said the songs take time to grow on you. Only one or two but that is the same with any cd. still this is not just any cd... like the cover it is like an amusment park of an album. Dave explores more sounds on this cd than he does on any of his other cds including there dark Before These Crowded Streets. Dave's voice and the production are both top of the line and every song is crisp and breathtaking. This cd and its revolutionary sound could easily be classified as one of the best cds of the 90s. This cd always gets playing time when im chillin with friends.
This wild musical ride starts with The best of what's around possibly my favorite dave song to date it it is VERY CATCHY. The next is the radio-friendly what would you say which has some great hooks making it one of his greatest hits. Satellite has amazing acoustic guitar and is also a great song. Rhyme and Reason and typical sitution are phenaminal live but just as good on this cd. Dancing Nancies is another personal favorite of mine. Make sure to check it out on the live from central park cd. Ants Marching is the classic dave matthews song. it is an amazing song that pretty much sums up his style. Lover Lay Down is mellow and is the one song that takes time to grow on you. Nonetheless it is an incredible song and Dave does a great job in it. Jimi thing is very catchy also and they love to turn it into a jam in concert. Warehouse is also a concert jam and a great song. Pay for what you get is mellow but unforgettable another great vocal job by dave. #34 is a jam and it is a great way to sum up a breathtaking musical experience. If you are just getting into dave matthews band buy this cd, if you like dave but you dont have it you need to buy it. This is a great cd to listen to and an even better cd just to chill to.

5 out of 5 stars Love or Hate.......2006-12-27

Dave Matthews is like coconut. You either love it or hate it. The guy is a musical genius in my book. You have to listen to a song a few time for it grows on you.

5 out of 5 stars its' an emotionally pure sound.......2006-12-18

first things first. i've been a fan of dave ever since i first heard what would you say. I first owned this album on casette and later when I finally had a cd player i bought it. in my lifetime i've met people who either love him or hate him. I have never met a person who was in the middle. for those who don't like em i'm fine with that, but don't go on and say that he's lame and he sucks. I could say the same for some of the things you listen to, but I don't because it doesn't accomplish anything. If I said gwen stefani sucks you'd get all up in arms. (she doesn't suck, its just an example.) all I'm saying is that you just respect our opinions and we'll respect yours.

now to the album review. I've owned this album in form or another for 12 years. It is one of the only albums that I can listen too straight and not get bored, nor skip a track. from ths softness of satellite to the fast pace motion of ants marching this album really tunes in to all of your emotions. as a previous reviewer mentioned earlier this is dave matthews band at its purists. where they actually like to play music with each other. even now 12 years later they are still together. each band member has a staple on this album. that's all i gotta say.

5 out of 5 stars Its Never too Late to Review a Favorite.......2006-11-18

There is no good way to put this album into words magical enough to describe its sound. Under the Table and Dreaming is bar-none the most amazing CD I have ever purchased. Someone once asked me the question "If you had one album in hell that you had to listen to over and over what would it be?" Under the Table and Dreaming is that album. It is an album that has carried me through 10 years of life changing experiences: High School, College, World Travel, and now "the real world". There is no band in the world that has created a more intricately beautiful sound than DMB, and there is no band in the world that is so dear to my heart. DMB has given me the passion to follow music, and the passion to listen closely to music. If music flows through your soul, creates stunning scenes through your imagination, and you still don't own this album, then it is time, my friend, to buy Under The Table and Dreaming. It is an album that, to this day, remains ultimately my favorite piece of music; an album that I recommend to anyone who truly appreciates the art of sound.

5 out of 5 stars Either you like them or you don't.......2006-10-18

Hey guys, its very simple. They have a very unique sound. Either you like it or you don't. If you do, awesome, because you can take part in amazing nationwide tours almost biannually. People who like Dave Matthews don't s*** on the people that don't, so why do people that don't like him have to s*** on those that do. Grow up, if you don't like something than just don't listen to it. No one that listens to Dave Matthews is ever going to bring harm to you by listening to Dave Matthews, so please chill out.

Lizz Wright's sophomore release, Dreaming Wide Awake is a gorgeous, floating atmospheric journey. Her deep, rich alto, matched by a similarly incredible depth of emotion, makes for a beautiful, timeless record. Highlights include a bluegrass-tinged cover of Neil Young's "Old Man," a gorgeously sultry version of Joe Henry's "Stop" (better known as "Don't Tell Me," as covered by Madonna), and the Youngbloods' positivity-tipped "Get Together." But not all highlights are cover tunes. Wright, along with songwriter Jesse Harris and Toshi Reagon, created the achingly beautiful "Hit the Ground," while Chocolate Genius (a.k.a. Marc Anthony Thompson) scribed "Chasing Strange," and Wright penned the jazz-tinged title track on her own. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE!!.......2007-05-03

I heard the title track "Dreaming Wide Awake" on a local university FM station a few weeks ago, immediately ordered the CD, along with Ms Wright's first CD, "Salt", and have been listening to both of them constantly since receiving them. I play them together in a "random" mode on my player which allow the subtle differences of the two CDs to blend together to make a tremendous listening experience.

It would be difficult for me to pick a favorite song because there are several songs that I love and there are several types of songs to chose from. A truly fascinating collection of music with something for just about everyone and each song given her personal style. Both are truly remarkable albums that are musically adroit and lyrically captivating.

Please, don't miss these musical treasures, that will stand the test of time. I'll be playing these CDs for a long time. Truly remarkable musicianship by Ms Wright.

5 out of 5 stars Dreaming Wide Awake.......2007-04-02

I am very impressed with this release. This artist is new to me so I had no preconceived ideas of what to expect. Her voice is very smooth, womanly strong. She brings me back to the days of my youth when I was hearing more black women sing of more than the blues, songs of inspiration and happiness, black women voices were heard in a more positive way.

I really enjoy listening to this CD.

Experimental singer-songwriter Vienna Teng arrives at her ambitious third album at the peak of her considerable powers, with renowned producer/bassist Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux) providing a more textured and atmospheric landscape. Contributions from musicians Jay Bellerose (Paula Cole, Duncan Sheik), Carla Kihlstedt (Tom Waits), and Marc Orton (Bill Frisell) make Teng's piano-based, jazzy chamber-folk shiver with new intimacy. But at the core, she remains as seductive and transcendent as ever, even as lyrically she takes more of a storytelling approach. Marrying complex melodies and moody tones to captivating lyrics about fevered longings, unspoken truths, and uncharted suffering, the former software engineer pulls listeners into a secret, subterranean world that is often as murky and disturbing as it is wondrous. On "Whatever You Want," a dutiful "company man" and his perfect wife pull back the curtain to reveal a disquieting darkness. In "I Don't Feel So Well," an unbalanced woman issues a provocative warning to a potential lover ("I thought you should know before you fall"). And on "Now Three," delicate cello lines play off a nearly mystical lyric about prenatal knowing. Teng delivers all 11 offerings in a chillingly pure soprano, multitracking her own voice 32 times on the Hurricane Katrina-inspired (if also overlong and ponderous) "Pontchartrain" to achieve something reminiscent of a Latin liturgical piece. Not yet 28 and frighteningly gifted ("Lake Pontchartrain is haunted: Bones without names, photographs framed in reeds"), Teng seems to know your own soul better than you do--the exquisitely beautiful "Recessional," which inspires the album title, may make you rethink your whole life. The album's most uplifting and hopeful cut: "City Hall," inspired by San Francisco's decision in 2004 to recognize gay marriage. ("Ten years waiting for this moment of fate / When we say the words and sign our names / If they take it away someday / This beautiful thing won't change.") Count Dreaming Through the Noise among the "can't miss" records of 2006. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

One might call quitting a lucrative job as a software engineer for a life as a singer-songwriter a risky career move. Fortunately for Vienna Teng, it has paid off. Within two years of leaving her Silicon Valley career behind, 27-year-old Teng has appeared on the CBS Early Show, Late Night with David Letterman, and NPR, and has gained a large devoted fanbase through constant touring, selling 60,000 copies of her first two albums. Vienna Teng reaches a new musical pinnacle on her third album, and debut for Zoë/Rounder, 'Dreaming Through the Noise.' Producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux) provides Teng with the perfect setting for an unforgettable set of chamber-folk compositions, which showcase her sharp lyrical prowess as well as her skills as an accomplished pianist. The album's eleven original songs show both an amazing lyrical depth and a broad musical scope, which ranges from the perfect pop simplicity of "Whatever You Want" to the stunning musical tour de force of "Ponchartrain." Clearly her most ambitious work to date, 'Dreaming Through the Noise' confirms Vienna Teng as a brilliant young songwriter at the top of her craft.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and poetic.......2007-05-29

Wonderful CD. Perhaps not her strongest, but still definitely up there. I saw her at the Triple Door a week or so ago, and her voice carries beautifully in person and on disc.

My favorites on the track are "Blue Caravan" "Nothing Without You" and "Recessional".

4 out of 5 stars Probably her best yet.......2007-05-07

If you are looking for some melodic mellow music this is the CD for you. A few songs seemed out of place but overall this is a great CD if you are in the right mood.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing on CD and Live!.......2007-05-01

I recently had the privilege of experiencing Vienna Teng Live (April 27, 2007 in Moundridge Kansas). I've been a huge fan ever since I saw her on Letterman.

At the concert, even though not in the best of venues, Vienna was incredible. She didn't have impressive sound equipment, just a mic and a synthesizer. Her vocals were great and piano playing skills superb.

I realize I only had a small taste of her personality by conversing with her a few brief minutes after the concert, yet she seems very genuine and humble.

I highly recommend all three of her CDs but DEFINITELY GO SEE HER IN CONCERT!

5 out of 5 stars in a class of her own..........2007-03-02

If you've never heard of Vienna Teng before, don't let that fool you into thinking she must not be worth listening to. To the contrary, she may very well be one of the greatest treasures of American music to be found in this generation.
I came across this album by chance about 2 months ago. Took it home and have become more and more mesmerized by it. And, of course, this led me to go out and purchase her 2 previous recordings.
Vienna plays and sings with such grace. Her lyrics are well-thought-out, and as a result they penetrate the listener's mind and soul to a variety of desired effects. This album has, by far, the best instrumental arrangements out of her three recordings. There are wonderful uses of string ensembles along with some other unique combinations including accordion and mandolin.
I get the impression that there is an incredible mind behind the workings of a great album like this one. Vienna is an artist in the truest since of the word. She conveys her thoughts in a way that is not in anyway shallow, and yet is plainly accessible to a host of music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Only five stars because that's all I have.......2007-02-17

It's difficult and daunting to review a work of art as exquisite as this latest album by Vienna Teng. First, the aural persona: she sounds to me like a very sensitive, cerebral person chosing her words carefully and with utmost restraint from great depths of feeling; hence, the curious cognative tension between her immaculately tender voice and the torrent of emotions held in check. Another reviewer described the result thus: "you feel like she's sitting across a little table from you and leaning in and telling you a story." This is also true.

Next, the moods: "Blue Caravan" is filled with yearning, longing, and adventure. It reminds one of the steppes of Central Asia, or Scheherazade in a moment of candor. "Whatever you want," in contrast, makes a double entendre of cheerfulness: the company man and his wife are wired to gratify, but look forward to their liberation and revenge; the arrangement and orchestration are brilliant and fun. At the extreme opposite is "Pontchartrain," a piece so moving and grave, so emotionally harrowing, that few of the greatest musicians--perhaps Nina Simone--could carry it off. (I recommend listening to that one on headphones, alone or with someone who would understand.)

It's difficult to think of how this album could be more perfect than it is. It attempts much, and accomplishes it all. It occurred to me that I was actually observing the emergence of one of the very few great performers of our lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars From the heart-amid the storm.......2007-06-30

These songs are both for "regular" worship and for those times when the storms of life are raging. The song that never fails to touch me is "I Will Life My Eyes": worship of God when facing unclimbable mountains, raging storms, or inner pain too deep to share...

This isn't rose-colored-glasses faith. This is faith even when life is so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face.

Bebo Norman has created a much-needed album that breathes hope and peace, whether you are in a season of joy or a season of deep trial. His voice and stylings are perfect for an album such as this.

5 out of 5 stars Bebo Busts Out.......2007-06-18

I've been a Bebo fan since about 96 and have every album, including "The Fabric of Verse". This is his best since "Ten Thousand Days". It's different -- less acoustic -- than those early albums, but it represents the emergence into a new, more up-tempo, "rockier" sound that's proved elusive on the last three albums. In other words, what I feel he's been trying to do on "Try", "Myself When..." and "Big Blue Sky" he finally got it right here. The opening track sets a great tone, but that best ones to me are "Time Takes It's Toll" and "The Way We Mend". They are excellent songs that are as strong lyrically as they are musically. Catchy in a way that few of his songs since "Ten Thousand Days" have been. I highly recommend this album to any Bebo fan, and indeed any fan of good Christian pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Feed a starving heart!.......2007-05-24

I have been a Bebo fan since 'back in the day' when he used to do warm-up for Caedmon's Call in smallish college venues. This CD is outstanding. I find the outcome of the threefold strand of his lyrics, his music and his expression to be a rare triumph. In a day where most of contemporary Christian music is embarassingly anemic, predictable and repetitious, this CD is fresh and like water in the desert. It brings my spirit to LIFE.Bebo has obviously been through personal brokenness and this CD sounds to me like he channeled said struggle as a precious musical offering for fellow struggling sojourners.(Hmmmm...the broken alabaster jar of exquisite perfume comes to mind..)

4 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-05-14

This is the first time I listened to one of Bebo Norman's CD's--and I bought it for one song. So I have nothing to compare it with. I have njoyed this CD, but would probably not buy another.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry, Bebo........2007-04-06

I own all of Bebo Norman's CDs, and I LOVE all of them, except for this one. I bought it and listened to it once, and I hated it. It does not sound like Bebo. This sounds like Steven Curtis Chapman or Michael W. Smith or any of the other mass produced Christian/pop music artists. On all of his previous albums, even though he changed his sound slightly, it was still generally very acoustic and Bebo-ish. This album sounds nothing like his previous music. I was disappointed.

Sunset Rubdown's music is lo-fi, shell-shocked, dissonant, and very reminiscent of David Bowie/Brian Eno's post-apocalypse fixation, circa Station to Station. The images and music that singer Spencer Krug has put to tape tell of futility and disconnectedness through his warbled, pained singing--a style that almost distracts too much from the music. It's similar to the way that Conor Oberst's rawness sometimes overwhelms Bright Eyes. However, there are standouts like "I'm Sorry That I Sang on Your Hands That Have Been in the Grave," where a weirdly gorgeous meditation over a click-track coughs up a glimmering loneliness. On "The Men Are Called Horsemen There" glam and drama are dialed all the way up and mixed with a heavy Spectorian wall of sound. "Shut Up I Am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings" swirls with tension, then opens into an '80s New-Romantic sad dance party. Employing unusual instruments, off-kilter arrangements, and an all-around herky-jerky feel, the album is intriguing and unsettling, not unlike Krug's other projects, Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade. --Gabi Knight

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellenté!.......2007-07-09

I love this album. If you like Wolf Parade, then I highly recommend this album as its complement.

4 out of 5 stars Wolf Parade is radical..........2007-05-14

If you like wolf parade you'll like this album...I like spencer's voice, I don't know why but it reminds me of david bowie.

4 out of 5 stars More than a side project..........2007-03-27

I found out about this group the same way that many others most likely have: I listened to Wolf Parade, wanted more and realized that singer/songwriter/keyboardist Spencer Krug had another band.

That band is Sunset Rubdown and while it is quite different than Wolf Parade (it's softer and more musically sparse), it still contains the unmistakeable love-or-hate vocals that Krug supplies for both groups. But if you loved Krug's somewhat-strained delivery on Wolf Parade's Apologies to the Queen Mary then you'll likely enjoy this side project of his.

The album does need quite a few listens for it to really grow on you but I instantly loved such tracks as "Us Ones In Between" with it's cryptic and poetic lyrics and it's simple piano melody. "I'm Sorry I Sang On Your Hands That Have Been in the Grave" has a wonderfully eerie, carnival-like, music-box esque charm to it that makes it stand out from the rest of the album. And finally, "The Men Are Called Horsemen There" and "Snakes Got a Leg III" give the album its most musically intense moments.

I have to mention that Sunset Rubdown also has an LP and an EP that were released prior to this. I absolutely love the EP. I highly recommend trying to find it and if you do - buy it! It has 5 tracks and they are all fantastic. I especially love "Three Colours". While "A Day in the Graveyard" parts I and II are probably the two best songs written and recorded by the band.

5 out of 5 stars Rivals the Arcade Fire's "Funeral" in terms of beauty.......2007-01-09

Simply put, this is a beautiful album. For the longest time, the Arcade Fire's "Funeral" stood on its own as the most beautiful album in my collection. Sure, many albums have beautiful songs - even several beautiful songs, but no albums until "Shut up I Am Dreaming" have struck me as comparable to "Funeral", and that's saying a lot.

I'd now like to address the spotlight reviewer. Musicans/ artists (esp. good ones) create from their heart. Sometimes a lot of people like their contribution and they are recognized i.e., fame, and sometimes their contribution never catches on. However, it is insulting to insinuate that this is "music for the scenesters" like spencer championed them as his key demographic. I am 26 and far from a scenester kid, yet I enjoy this music very much. It's like insinuating that pink floyd made music for drug users. The fact that scenesters may (or may not) like this album is just a side-effect; scenesters weren't the impetus for its creation.

This is an album for anyone that appreciates a beautiful piece of work, be it a scenester, a stoner, or a conservative, etc.

5 out of 5 stars My top release of 2006.......2006-12-22

I cannot state more emphatically that Sunset Rubdowns album is my pick for album of the year, not just for how surprisingly good it is to anyone that enjoyed Wolf Parade's incredible debut but because it is simply inspiring from start to finish. As a whole this is the most delightful kind of album, the one you wish everyone's side-band would put out to keep the enthusiasm going. The fact that it will remain under almost everyone's radar is not entirely bad, as it leaves it open for discovery many, many years down the road.

The great irony of the Louvin Brothers, today considered by many the best of the brother duos, is that they peaked at a time when the form was almost dead. Their vocal sound was as old as the Alabama hills, and they kept alive such archaic tunes as "Knoxville Girl" and "In the Pines." Yet their studio bands were up to date, if not exactly Nashville Sound knockoffs, and much of their material, including "You're Running Wild," was fairly contemporary. Traditionalists or modernists? When it's this good, who cares? And besides, who's going to argue with guys who knew Sin the way Charlie and Ira Louvin knew Sin? --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars When I Stop Dreaming, Best of the Louvin Brothers.......2007-07-09

I saw Charlie Louvin in concert recently in San Diego. Very few in the crowd had heard him live before but all knew his reputation. He did not disapoint and made a room full of new hardcore fans. He and his late brother recorded some wonderful songs that will be evergreen much like the work of Hank Williams. When you look back at the great Brothers acts like the Stanleys, Jim and Jesse and the Delmore Brothers you know the Louvin Brothers belong on top of that elite group. Their harmony work was the best. You won't hear this great stuff on the radio anymore as Nashville has long ago turned it's back on it's roots. You gotta go dig up the really good stuff by yourself. This record is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE LOUVIN BROTHERS: A Review.......2007-07-03

This is a must own CD for lovers of traditional and blue grass influenced country music. The tight harmonies, beautiful melodies, and poignant stories are a real treat to listen to and enjoy.

You won't hear better country than "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", "You're Running Wild", "My Baby's Gone", and the title song, "When I Stop Dreaming".

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for Serious C & W Collectors.......2007-03-04

Like all great musicians--whatever the music--the Louvin Brothers had a sound all their own: often imitated, never equalled. A basic album for listeners who love country and want a fuller sense of where it all began.

5 out of 5 stars A good starter album from the Louvin Brothers.......2006-06-30

I read the book, "Country Conversations" by Timothy Edward Jones initially for his interview with John McCrea of Cake, who happens to be a big fan of the the Louvin Brothers since childhood. Indeed, he got Charlie Louvin to play all 16 dates on Cake's 2003 Unlimited Sunshine Tour along with Cheap Trick, the Detroit Cobras, and the Hackensaw Boys who was the backing band for Charlie Louvin.
In the 2 pg. interview with McCrea, he stated his favorite Louvin songs were "You're Learning" (an Every Brothers sound-alike) and "the Great Atomic Power", the better of the two and both on this album. Definitely a good primer of the Louvin's music!
ps--As much McCrea in that interview stated that "Louvin Brothers' covers make me nauseous," "The Great Atomic Power" deserves a makeover (a faster tempo & a fuller musical accompaniment sung by a female duo; myself as one of that duo)--
John McCrea, you have been warned!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant harmonizing.......2005-12-14

The best of the best of The Louvins, but ignore Amazon's track listing - see P.D.Harris' review for all the tracks included.
A must-have collection unless you want to invest in the multi-disc box.

Released three months after her murder in 1995, Dreaming of You introduced the Tejano queen to the mainstream pop audience. Four new tunes recorded with producers Keith Thomas and Guy Roche envisioned Selena as a dance-pop diva similar to Janet Jackson or Mariah Carey, but with a Latin twist. Far more arresting are the two classic mariachi numbers and a bilingual duet with David Byrne recorded for the movie Don Juan DeMarco, in which Selena had a bit part. The contrast between her passionate invitation to "come dance with me" and Byrne's nerdy white-guy delivery indicated her wide-open creative potential. The rest of the album consists of remixes of Selena's Latin-pop hits, including a masterful version of "Techno Cumbia" that bring out the hip-hop and reggae flavors in the groove. The tragedy was that such a promising introduction also served as a sad farewell. --Rick Mitchell

I loved Selena the first time I heard her music.I feel that Selena is still alive but she isn't.I feel the same way about my sister,my mom,and my brother.I feel that they are still here.Me and my sister were very huge fans of selena even though I didn't know her until I was about [...].I will be her biggest fan forever.

5 out of 5 stars Selena Was On Her Way .......2006-03-30

Selena was in fact on her way to being a huge star in the English market.I Could Fall In Love and Dreaming Of You still remain 2 of my favorite songs of all time.Other highlights to the album include Missing My Baby,Captive Heart, and I'm Getting Used To You.....Also with album being released a few months after her death....She was the first latin artist to have an album debut #1 on the American charts and also selling over 4 million copies....Her dream had finally come true....I Could Fall In Love was the first single and it made the Top 10.....Make sure you pick up a copy of this album

5 out of 5 stars Selena - Always Remembered.......2005-12-15

I did not become a Selena fan untill I saw the movie with Jennifer Lopez in it. I heard the song "Dreaming Of You" and IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG EVER MADE !!!
I won't say much but buy this album, or "Selena-Greatest Hits" or "Selena-The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack".
You will not be sorry. I also heard Jennifer Lopez sing "I Could Fall In Love" in her Puerto Rican concert and that song is also beautiful. There has never been songs like these before Selena, and nobody could or can do it better then Selena.
She truly was a beautiful and pure person, and listening to her beautiful songs will surely comfort you. She also does GREAT Cumbia Melodies. Anyone who picks up a Selena album will be glad they did, and I feel blessed I have been lucky enough to hear some of this late singers work. I know that once you hear these songs you will become a huge Selena fan, and Treasure her Music and carry it with you in your life ALWAYS. I know I certainly will.

4 out of 5 stars Silky and Soulful.......2007-06-12

great sound...great voice...smooth and mellow...but not TOOO mellow. daryl hall knows how to deliver. a simple but sophisticated collection. heard "cab driver" on the radio and thought it was a new song....then found this cd and Soul Alone...don't know how i missed them..but glad i found em...they are already "regulars" on my play list.

5 out of 5 stars Darrly Hall at his best!!!!.......2007-05-13

I was a freshman in college when Hall & Oates began to make an impression on the music scene back in the '70s. So, for the next fifteen years I was a big fan of their "blue-eyed soul" music. Unfortunately for them the '90s didn't bode well for that particular genre of music. But guess what? What's old is new in the new millenium, and Darryl Hall (minus John Oates) kicks mega-a** on this CD. This is without a doubt the "best" effort Darryl Hall has put forth in twenty years!!! Do yourself a favor and purchase Can't Stop Dreaming immediately. And for all of us who remember AWB, Alan Gorrie collaborated on this CD and his influence really works for Darryl Hall,

5 out of 5 stars Great solo album.......2007-04-10

This is an excellent solo album done by darryl hall. I am only familiar with the songs that were hits in the 80's so this is so refreshing to hear. Very easy listening.

5 out of 5 stars Getting better all the time.........2007-01-26

Daryl Hall's music and ever evolving kind of soul is like those gool ol' wines: they get better as they age. Like many children of the 80's my first memory of Hall & Oates goes straight back to their 1982 album "H20" (Maneater, Family Man...). From then on, Hall & Oates was simply an inherent part of the decade. But when I found out that one of my favorite songs ever ("Everytime you go away" performed by Paul Young) had been indeed composed by Daryl Hall, I began to explore his music in deep beyond the no. 1 hits. With pleasant results. I became a Hall & Oates fan and more specifically, a Daryl Hall fan. "Big Bam Boom" released in 1984 included one of the greatest songs ever written and one of my all time favorites "Some things are better left unsaid". Although the song did not caught much attention at the moment (in fact it only reached no. 18 on the Domestic U.S. charts) boy how it introduced the unique harmonics and true soulful mood that define the true richness of Daryl Hall's unparalelled type of music. It is so very pleasant to find out that 20 years later Daryl Hall is still faithful to his roots and can undoubtedly deliver superb music. With "Can't stop dreaming" Daryl's definitely showcases his very own "Philly Mood" in a mature, relaxed and at-ease sort of way. What a great musician and singer. "Can't stop dreaming" was originally released in JAPAN (!) in 1997 and 6 years later (2003) in the U.S. I bought the imported japanese CD back in 1998 and since then it is one of my all time favorites. All the songs are great (all of them, really)and they are all bound to be favorites though perhaps the moving ballad "Holding out for love" has a special place in my heart and of course, the new version of the all-time hit "She's gone" stands out for good. Daryl explores different styles with his everpresent underlying strong soul & R&B foundation and the whole product is incredibly easy to listen and enjoy. To all Daryl Hall fans out there, this CD is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised.......2006-09-24

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Hard to believe the album is as good as it is without the harmonies of John Oates....but I really enjoyed it. More smooth jazz than pop or rock, this is the best cd I've heard straight through in awhile.

i think this album came on a direct pipeline from god. it's that good and interesting. Kate goes crazy with the fairlight.

5 out of 5 stars Creatively Brilliant and Off the Chart.......2007-02-28

This album blew me away when I first purchased it back in the mid eighties. Being a Kate fan, I've watched her career mature, excel and take a long vacation which recently culminated in yet another masterpiece, 'Aerial'. Still, as excellent as her follow up, 'The Hounds of Love' and the later 'Sensual World' were, it is this album, 'The Dreaming' where Kate's unbridled creativity is on display in its awesome splendor. The amazing thing about Kate Bush is that she is totally original. Each track on here is in a world of its own. So many divergent musical styles and vibes... Creative musical ideas and never been heard before sounds, rythmns and stylings. The woman is a formidable artist, and I think this collection shows it as well or better than anything she has done. So the album was a commercial failure???? Kate, take that as a complement. Its SO GOOD its beyond the ability of the average 'joe' or 'jane' to appreciate I suppose. Appreciate it, I do. It never fails to leave me suspended in gaffa.

5 out of 5 stars pull out the pin..........2007-01-20

i grew up in the 70s and 80s listening to the likes of Kate, Lori Anderson, Missing Persons, The Motels, Cyndi Lauper and other great lady singers, my Dad to thank for that. Kate is by far my fave. and The Dreaming...my fave record. i can't believe it disappointed so many upon its release. anyhoo, the lyrics, the stories she tells, the instruments and sounds, combined with the raw emotion just kill, really get you at your core. whether its her giddy excitement at rescuing/freeing her lover or her violent inner struggle with survival vs. guilt, you can feel it. the background vocals are fantastic as well, emphasizing her point but not overwhelmingly. i especially love the chant in the title song. dreeeeeaaaaammmmmtttttaaaaammmmm (get it, dreamtime?). great stuff, if you like adventurous, imaginative music (that is so fun to sing along with), check this one out. you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, without compare.......2006-07-15

I loved Kate's earlier albums and I was primed for the release of THE DREAMING, or so I thought. It blew me away! What could be greater than one of your favorite artists producing a massively great album, even better than their previous efforts..? I used to listen to this one each and every morning, it was a great start to the day!

As Jennings introduces the live take of "Bob Wills is Still the King" that closes this otherwise studio-bound album, one rowdy audience member yells a drunken affirmation. Or maybe something else, given that Jennings breaks off mid-sentence, seemingly ready to leap into the crowd and open a Texas-size can of whup-ass on the guy. That he doesn't--and gives a smoking read of the song instead--is emblematic of the success of 1975's Dreaming My Dreams. Not yet having succumbed to the overblown boasts of "I've Always Been Crazy" that sold millions of records later in the decade, he's content here to wryly look askance at the Nashville establishment and his reputation as an "outlaw" and sing a couple of sweet love songs, all while playing plenty of tasty rhythm guitar. A keeper, and one of the most welcome CD reissues in years. (The 2001 reissue adds two bonus tracks from the film Mackintosh & T.J..) --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WAYLON'S BEST ! (according to the man himself).......2007-04-15

Dreaming My Dreams was released in 1975, a couple of years after Waylon Jennings, country outlaw, had wrestled away artistic control of his music from the Nashville establishment. It was recorded in long time friend Neil Diamond's "very cozy" upstairs recording studio. The first song is the electric guitar rocking, autobiographical Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way.

Somebody told me when I came to Nashville,
"Son, you've finally got it made.
Ol' Hank made it here and we're all sure that you will",
But I don't think Hank done it this way.

Waylon then gets reflective with Don Williams' Gypsy Woman. This is one of Waylon's best songs. Waylon's raspy baritone gives the impression of a big man who has lived life the hard way, but still stands tall and is ready for more (all were true). His voice also had a persuasive vulnerability that has won listeners over for decades. It's easy to identify with his struggles, and easy to want to stand in his corner. There's a excellant version of Roger Miller's I've Been A Long Time Leaving (But I'll Be A Long Time Gone) included here, too. The Door Is Always Open was a hit for the two girl, one guy trio, Dave and Sugar, but the song seems like it was written for Waylon.

When night falls on that mansion and you're lying in his bed
When he begs you for attention, will you think of me instead
When he reaches out to touch you, is your face turned to the wall
Well, the door is always open, and the lights on in the hall.

The title track is Waylon at his most tender, but this guy never gets mushy. Not Waylon, not ever. He gets back into rowdy form, with a live version of Bob Wills Is Still The King. Waylon's dominating vocal performance sounds great, and even though it's the only live song on the album, it fits right in. He had said Dreaming My Dreams was his favorite of all his albums, and it's easy to see why. This was Waylon Jennings at the top of his game.

5 out of 5 stars Simple truth.......2006-10-15

The title track, Dreaming my dreams with you, is as fine as a sad country song gets.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for Waylon? Here it is........2006-05-11

This is indeed, Waylon at his best. Buy it now, go ahead! Do it with 1 click! You will not be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Dreaming my Dreams Title Track is divine longing.......2005-09-01

I grew up listening to Waylon and his buddies and all the crazy eclectic things my parents liked (Peter Paul & Mary, John Denver, Willie, Merle, Glen Campbell). This album is essential Waylon, IMHO; if you want to understand him in basics, this is it. It speaks to his roots, musical background, his influence on Nashville and Country Music [back when it was still Country and Western Music] and should be required listening.

The title track is one my favorite all time songs; Waylon's black hole deep baritone is hauntingly gorgous and painfully longing.

5 out of 5 stars What does it say on your shirt?.......2005-07-08

Some records are so perfect there's not a second you'd want to fade or edit out. This was my introduction to Waymore, many years ago. I had the good fortune to discover him via someone who had a number of his records so it was a real eye-opener to find a singer I'd never heard of with a back catalogue of such high quality. I love the record for a number of reasons: the voice; the musicians; the songs, but more than anything else it was memorable for showing me a country band could SWING. It's not rock or blues or jazz but it has it's own feel and, of course, caused me to check out the likes of Bob Wills - not exactly a household name in the United Kingdom. Waylon was making good records til he died, but he never improved on this. Wonderful.
