The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

EASTWOOD IS ALSO A GREAT SONGWRITER.......2007-06-11
The disc does contain his wonderful A PERFECT WORLD and THE UNFORGIVEN. Why Eastwood never won an Oscar for some of his original scores is a mystery to me. He is more celebrated as a director than as an actor only because he won more awards in that category and his acting style was known for it's low-keyed and reactionary style. But the Clint Eastwood the musician cannot be dismissed and here is that more than proves his versatility. A known jazz lover, for fans of that genre, give a listen to WHY SHOULD I CARE from "True Crime", another great Eastwood composition.
The remainder of the disc is a salute to Eastwood and his work with a heavy emphasis on the jazz.
First rate. I've been a fan since his directoral debut in PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Little did I realize what a great composer he would turn out to be.
A must for any fans as there are no single soundtacks available from his movies featuring his work.
Play Misty For Me.......2005-12-20
The first half of the album features both Clint's own works and the fabulous talented composers he has worked with. Ennio Moricone's oh so recognizable style("The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"), the moving music of Lennie Niehaus("Pale Rider"), the haunting sounds from Lalo Schfrin("Dirty Harry Theme", where you will relive Clint doing the, "Do you feel lucky punk?" speech), and some other wonderful musicians including the great Civil War and Western sounding "Theme from Outlaw Josey Wales", by Jerry Fielding, and Erroll Garner's"Play Misty For Me", a gorgeous piano rendition. Some of Clint's own works, included are "Claudia's Theme" from "Unforgiven" "Kate's Theme" from "Absolute Power", "Big Fran's Baby" from "A Perfect World", and of course the mesmerizing and above mentioned "Doe Eyes".
Second half is a 10 part instrumental suite, "Clint Eastwood, An American Filmmaker Suite". This is music composed and conducted by Lennie Niehaus for the PBS "American Masters" documentary " Eastwood: Out of the Shadows" The music tells Clint's story musically, and it flows beautifully and emotionally.It has a little of everyting, including some great jazzy numbers. The orchestration and the musicians capture the journey wonderfully. For list of all 23 track titles, see buying info. You can also listen to samples from there.
The quality of the CD is excellent. A pamphlet with some production notes, and the tracks is included. There are some great pix of Clint as well. It doesn't have ALL his films included. Hopefully the music form "Kelly's Heroes"("Burning Bridges) and "The Beguiled"(more from Lalo Schifrin) will make the sequel album!
Take it in your car and listen to it when you are stuck in traffic, and it will take you somewhere else for a while.Just say "Play Misty For Me" and hit track 8. Highly recommended for the Eastwood fan. And for those that can't get enough, I would also recommend the soundtrack to "Bridges of Madison County". One of the most romantic albums I ever heard.

FIGHTING THE WORLD INDEED.......2007-05-13

Basically, this was supposed to be Manowar's great breakthrough album, as the boys were carried by a major record company for the first time. All the macho theatrics about "true metal" aside, this was also clearly the most commercially sounding album by Manowar up to that point. It succeeded in reaching a larger audience but failed to make a really big impact in the US market. And so began the decline of Manowar as power metal's number one act, and in fact the decline of power metal as a serious genre (see also the later albums of Helloween, Virgin Steele), before bands like Blind Guardian, Hammerfall and Therion somewhat restored its reputation.
Let's now turn to the music. There are some great melodies on this album, but these are often spoiled by an "MTV-friendly" sound and a very simplistic approach (which became the main characteristics of Manowar from this album onwards). The opening singalong-chant of Carry On already foreshadows the kind of ridicule that would culminate in later Manowar "hits" such as "Hail and Kill" and "The Sons of Odin".
If only they had recorded the title track, "Carry On", and "Holy War" in a less commercial fashion, and combined them with one or two more songs of the calibre of "Black Wind, Fire and Steel" (the only truly classic song on the album), instead of making idiotic attempts at hit-writing like "Blow Your Speakers". Then they would have had an album equally good as those that Manowar will be rightly remembered for ("Hail to England" and "Battle Hymns"). Alas, this was not to be, and so my advice regarding this album is to download "Black Wind, Fire and Steel" on your mp3 player, and to stay away from the album as a whole.

THIS ALBUM IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING........2007-06-15

Their singer, Hansi Kursch, is a big part of that diversity. He's got that thrash vocal presence (menacing & ominous verbal presentation, high-pitched screams, etc.), but can also share his lyrics in a sometimes tranquil or soothing manner. However, while his forte might be that thrash or a "power metal" type voice, his talent can easily spread to several different genres. What I'm trying to say is that he's completely unique, varied, and has loads of genuine personality (which means he doesn't rip-off any other singer); the man is truly a remarkable singer. The guitarists also have tons of variety. They can distribute thrash-like riffs and blazing solos (such as on "Welcome to Dying"), but they have melodic tendencies too, which can be seen on "Lord Of The Rings". The drummer has to be insane or have A.D.D or something, because his job is to keep up with those blistering guitar pieces, doing blast beats, double-bass techniques, plenty of tom-rolls, and he never skips a beat. In short, the musicianship is phenomenal, very diverse and unique, that WILL amaze you and leave you awestruck.
The songs on "Tales" are well-ranged and diverse as well. The album was very well-produced (or very well-remastered), but it still retains that raw feel (evocative of mid-eighties thrash). "Weird Dreams", for example, is a short instrumental full of sweet riffs, various time-changes, and classic solos. "Traveler in Time", "Welcome to Dying", "Lost in the Twilight Hall", and "Goodbye My Friend" are certified rockers that have no short supply of bittersweet metal. All four contain anthem-like chorus', insane guitar work, and incredible drumming. One of my personal favorites, "Lord of the Rings", is a shorter, three-minute piece that is very emotional and powerful. The vocals are so heartfelt and very talented, and the acoustic guitars weave among themselves ever so intricately. The lyrics are also special, and if you're a LOTR fan, you should be able to relate. "Altair 4" and "Tommyknockers" are the weakest off the album, but still add a lot to the C.D. "Altair 4" is short, but it's pretty diverse. The intro is unusual, but when it gets going, there's some well-done vocals and great guitar slices. "Tommyknockers" is another rocker that isn't bad at all, but it's not the best. While the lyrics may seem over-done, the song's actually about a Stephen King book, which is sweet. The closing song "The Last Candle" is thrash metal personified, complete with double-bass setting the tempo and crunchy riffage. That chorus is just so catchy and Hansi really hits those high notes perfectly. Quite an amazing closure to this '90's classic!
I strongly urge all of you to get into this band. I've heard that Hansi's voice is an acquired taste, but I can't picture any fan of fast-paced metal tunes, that contain soaring vocals full of passion and power, hating this band. If you like 80's thrash, epic power metal, or all-around medieval-esque themes, then you'll be in heaven with these guys, believe me. Also, I haven't heard much of BG's other stuff, but to my knowledge "Tales from the Twilight World" seems like a great starting point, because it's their third studio album, therefore they've "been around the block" so to speak, but it's also classic enough to be enjoyed by purists. Just think of Metallica's "Master of Puppets" or Slayer's "Reign in Blood", (no it's not as good, but like those two, it's BG's 3rd studio album). In conclusion, "Tales from the Twilight World" flat-out rules, and if you like power metal, thrash, and innovative metal genius', then really you must buy this album!

Blind Guardian embraces the power metal sound.......2006-07-26
Tales from the Twilight World is still undeniably fast, but it is a power metal album from start to finish. The lyrical content is still very much in the sci-fi/fantasy realm. The overall songwriting has improved to become more melodic and incorporate more intricate song structures (and some amazing guitar solos). Basically, the Blind Guardian sound we're all familiar with was born here. Songs like Welcome to Dying and Lord of the Rings are fantastic power metal tracks, and are still considered among the band's best material.
Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen makes another guest appearance on this album, further establishing Blind Guardian's credentials as a major German power metal band.
Overall, the album is not as memorable as Imaginations from the Other Side or Nightfall in Middle Earth (then again, what is?), but it is an important milestone in Blind Guardian's career, and is worth checking out if you're a Blind Guardian fan.

A great CD with a lot of variety.......2006-08-05
My favorite track on this CD is "Call to Arms". It's a rallying song that would be great either playing games (where I first heard it), or say, starting a sporting event. "Warriors of the World" also has this feel of getting everyone all riled up for something exciting to happen.
However there are also some calmer tracks on the CD, some of which are instrumental. One song, "Nessun Dorma" is done entirely in Italian with an operatic feel, and is a tribute to the mother of one of the band members. Needless to say, it is not metal at all.
If you were unfamiliar with the group, a first listen of this CD would probably make you think that not all these songs were performed by the same band. This CD is a showcase of the many talents of this group, because they can make both awesome and beautiful music at will.
Not only are they talented musicians, but contrary to a lot of metal groups, they can also sing as well as scream.
I would encourage a first time listener to preview "Call to Arms". If you don't feel awesome after hearing it, this CD may not be for you.

El tema del nombre del album, es muy Manowar, con lo cual me gusta mucho. Los otros tres temas finales no me merecen mayor comentario, y le bajan una estrella a mi calificacion. Creo que estan poco inspirados, un tanto reiterativos. me imagino que intentan seguir la linea de Outlaw y The Power, pero en esots dos temas del album anterior, hay poder y alta velocidad, con melodia.
Conclusion, el album es una experiencia innovadora y refrescante, recomendado si queres disfrutar de musica heavy con pausa.

Sung in her native Iroquois tongue, Joanne Shenandoah's music is like a lullaby with a touch of pain and longing lingering beneath the surface. Sometimes called the Native American Enya, Shenandoah actually has a deeper, more powerful voice than the Irish thrush. Her songs are like Native haiku, short fragments that build in their own poetic arc, sharing an innate musicality not unlike Irish Gaelic. Although Shenandoah has several recordings in a more conventional folk-singer vein, Peace & Power draws from her four most evocative, atmospheric albums: Matriarch, Orenda, Peacemaker's Journey and Lifeblood. Both pianist Peter Kater, who produced Lifeblood, and Tom Wasinger, producer of the other three, successfully frame Shenandoah's simple songs in detailed arrangements. Wasinger, in particular, creates an ethereal chamber music ensemble, with guitars, Middle Eastern zithers, Armenian duduks, citterns, and African kalimbas. The CD comes with an extensive autobiographical booklet detailing Shenandoah's life journey and her pride in her Native heritage, though there's not much information about the music itself. And it would be interesting, in this retrospective context, to hear how she has taken her tradition and extended it into new musical terrain. A Blueprint of Dance Music.......2005-04-25
The style Snap presented on this album, a style that is very similar to C+C Music Factory, was very much accepted by the artists like BG The Prince Of Rap and Black Man's Wagon - it was Euro-Dance but based on hip-hop beats (breakbeats), had longer rap verses and strong female vocals in hooks, and powerful melodies. The style became massive in early 90's with Hip-House and Piano-House until around 1992 when it all became Euro-Dance, with influences from Trance and Techno/rave music.

Brilliant Music in a Dead World.......2006-04-23
With so many bands vying for attention, there's a lot of unoriginality in music. It's rare for bands to draw from so many influences that their music defies logical classification. Yet Nevermore does just that (Iced Earth is also one of the few to do so.) They brilliantly combine the best of progressive metal, power metal, traditional metal, gothic metal as well as other subgenres. Dead Heart in a Dead World (a.k.a. DHDW) is not only the result of Nevermore 's unique style, but their varied songs as well.
This is the best feature of DHDW. Each song has its own combination of levity, seriousness, darkness, mellowness, heaviness, etc. For instance, the songs 'Evolution 169,' 'Inside Four Walls,' and 'Sound of Silence' all have some degree of levity in their lyrics (if only because one has lyrics from a Simon and Garfunkle song), yet 'Inside Four Walls' also has a degree of political seriousness about it that neither of the other two has.
Likewise, 'Dead Heart in a Dead World,' 'The Heart Collector,' and 'Believe in Nothing' all have a degree of darkness in them, yet 'Dead Heart in a Dead World' has a musical heaviness in it that neither of the other two (which are more ballad-esque) have.
It is hard to overstate the uniqueness of each song. Some songs will make you smile, some will make you think, and others will make you despair. And there is never any point where one has to skip tracks because every song is excellent. All of this while Nevermore performs interestingly original music that, while not always the most technical in metal, is so beautiful that it doesn't even matter.
Unfortunately, Nevermore's followup albums aren't as good because they lack the emotional variance that DHDW has. They are increasingly misanthropic, and while there are traces of that on this album, it is not overdone as it is on the followups. That's not to say they are bad because they're still very good, but it lacks the depth that DHDW and Dreaming Neon Black have.
If you have any appreciation of metal music, you will buy this CD. Then you'll buy Dreaming Neon Black.
